In the days of ancient Greece, there were nine muses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muses). These were the patron goddesses of the nine arts and sciences that the greeks held in highest esteem. They were seen as fountains of inspiration, and the blessing of a muse would allow a creator to produce breathtaking works of art and groundbreaking discoveries.

There was Calliope, the muse of epic poetry, whose emblem was a writing tablet. Clio, the muse of history, who bore scrolls with her. Erato, the muse of love poetry, who carried a lyre. Euterpe, the muse of song and elegiac poetry, whose symbol was a flute. Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, carried the symbolic mask of tragedy. Polyhymna, the muse of hymns, who hid her face with a veil. Terpsichore, the muse of dance, who also carried a lyre with her. Thalia, the muse of comedy, who wore the mask of comedy. And then there was Urania, the muse of astronomy, whose symbol was a globe and compass.

Nowadays, however, things are very, very different. The modern american would likely not even be able to tell you the difference between epic and elegiac poetry. The muses are out of date. The question is, what arts and sciences of today take that central place in our lives that these nine did for the ancient greeks? So, I'm interested in hearing opinions.

Would we be looking at muses of fine cooking? A muse of rap? A muse of cinema? Computer science? Physics? Would astronomy still be in there, or would it have faded out? Maybe even a youtube muse? How would you depict them? What would they go by? What would be their sacred emblems?

Corollary: If not for the country as a whole, then what about you personally? What muses inspire you? What arts and sciences capture your imagination?

For today's culture, I suspect the Nine Muses would be:
Memes
Remixes (Especially Dubstep)
Vlogs
Sexting
Movie Adaptions, Remakes, Sequels, and Prequels
Snarky T-Shirts
Epic Gaming
Casual Gaming
and "That's What She Said" Jokes.

Oh how the times have changed.

I've always wanted a muse of programming so that I could invoke her in a comment at the beginning of any code I write.

/* Sing now, Muse, of API, user-data, and of the regular expressions to parse it. */

Bonus points if I could figure out how to get it into dactylic hexameter.

Does the Muse of Teignmouth, England, count?

We can recycle some of the Greeks (though some of them will have to move around a little). But some others will need some new representation.

Euterpe still stays on as muse of song; acquiring video and remixes as well.

Melpomene stays as muse of tragedy, but her name gets slightly mangled to Emopemene. Often pictured with a llama.

Terpsichore (dance) and Thalia (comedy) switch names. Comedy undergoes a high German consonant shift, resulting in Thalia (dance) and Derpsichore (comedy).

Calliope stays, but acquires all written works, as well as coffee and other sources of caffeine.

Urania stays on as muse of science, and also acquires online research. She's renamed to Majelia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majel_Barrett).

Erato stays on as well. She's now pictured carrying two separate scrolls, one with a heart, and another bearing the inscription "N S F W."

Unfortunately that's it for the original muses. For the rest, we turn elsewhere.

Nike is renamed to ... hmm ... Nicki? Gotta work on that one. Anyway, she becomes muse of gaming of all kinds.

Bastet is borrowed from the Egyptians and becomes muse of digital art. Pictured with one arm around Derpsichore.

Eris is added as muse of social media, blogs, and message boards. Usually shown grinning at Emopemene.
