I made a thief, who had a code of "don't steal from comrades, don't steal things that you don't think you could get away with, don't steal from someone you've been ordered not to steal from by comrades, and try not to kill during a theft if at all possible, as dead guards and etc are likely to cause a greater investigation into the case".
The GM seemed to think I wanted to play a lawful good samurai.
I ended up playing a mildly hyperactive(and cute :3) melee character, with a touch of magic(primarily light themed).

The last one is Terezi Pyrope from Homestuck - a a blind teenaged transtemporal alien internet troll who wants to be a lawyer when she grows up, and who is ASTOUNDINGLY good at manipulating people.

Thank you.

Ok, now I really want to hear the explanation of how that game went down...

So I made a human paladin: a big, beefy guy, a symbol of the fight against evil and injustice. My weapon was a spiked chain, and the only other hero that I knew used one was Gipsy Danger. The DM assumed he would be your stereotypical "charge into the thick of things" Lawful Stupid guy.

I played Liam as a brilliant if crazy tactician who continually demanded that both justice and pancakes be served, as in, when challenged to single combat by a goblin warlord, my exultant cry upon rolling a 20 was "I'll make you into pancaaaaaaaakes!" I used Terezi to portray that because she is, like Liam, a similarly crazy tactician and defender of the law, and we share the love of a good cackle. I did not go so far as to lick everything I encountered, though.

More information upon request.

My current character in a Sabbat VtM LARP:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35120834/MadeSawPlayed%20-%20Adrian.jpg

Started off as an exiled Old Clan Tzimisce, skills and interests relating to both sides of life and death. Staff saw him as a Mad Doctor type, which wasn't entirely accurate, but I ran with it. Due to plot and having a series of Packs die around him after teaching him things and loaning him equipement, staff, backgrounds, etc., he's grown to be an affably evil political force in the region. Currently, he's well on his way to becoming the Voivode of Cascadia. :xykon:

The GM was expecting you to be religious, and you ended up playing a hilariously bigoted burglar?

Kleitor

The hilariously bigoted burglar part is correct but the book is because i wrote a stupidly long backstory for my character and so my dm basically just saw a big walking stupid novel and no actual character. EDIT: I forgot to mention that me purchasing a book almost resulted in a complete tpk as well and did get me along with another player killed and another kidnapped.

Story time!

O_o

Story time!

Well I'll recount the tale as best I can in a reasonable amount of characters. The party had six people but the only ones who really matter for the purposes of this story are myself the racist elf burglar, the worlds worst druid (he had no absolutely idea how to play a druid and on top of that only ever rolled above a four on his d20 once or twice) he was a half orc if memory serves me right, and the elf ranger who had a bad cough and the personality of paper. The basic story was that we all arrived at this port town called sand point by boat for various character specific reasons and ended up forming an adventuring party together in which i, the racist burglar somehow became leader. So after arriving in town and settling in at the local inn a big carnival arrives in town and we of course go because circus and various hygienic's happen and later on we get into a fight with some baby red dragons that had been released by some unknown perpetrator which was basically a distraction while an important business person was murdered at the circus and his business looted with the circus being implicated. Through evidence gathering and the party face coaxing out some info we believe that an underground thieves guild in the town is to blame for all of this. The next day we decide to go back to the circus for more investigation and carnival games. I decide that I want to go check out some shops instead because i felt like buying stuff and the other two stooges decide they want to join me in the shopping, the other three still want to go to the circus and thus the party is split:eek:. So no problem at first until I decide to head into the dreaded book shop. The DM informs that the shop is full of mostly cheap crap books but says there is a volume that sticks out and asks me to roll an appraise check. I roll really well and he informs that after looking through this book I recognize it to be worth 2000 gold which is quite a bit for a second level adventurer. I ask the woman running the shop how much shes selling it for and she says 200 gp and then I go into full greed mode and so do the other stooges completely ignoring that two of us noticed with a successful perception check that we see a tattoo stamped on this woman's neck of a golden hand which we suspect to be the sigil of the thieves guild. I whisper ic to the other players the value of this book and we decide since we were likely to be caught and didn't particularly feel like causing too much mayhem we would simply rip the woman off instead of straight up thieving from her. We combine our gold and buy the extremely undermarked book from the woman who may be apart of the THIEVES GUILD we're investigating without batting an eye. We now decide to go to the alchemy shop which the dm informs us is in the really shady criminally active part of town with a successful knowledge local check. We don't care and continue. As we approach the shop after several failed perception checks we are jumped by a group of thieves who don't want to kill us per say but will unless we give them the book and it finally clicks that the whole thing was a trap. We discuss things for a minute and mr. paper just wants to fight stuff and me and worst druid are greedy ****s so we fight despite being out manned three to one. We get our asses handed to us quickly and me and worlds worst druid decide to run, using the thieves own smoke bomb as a cover to flee, still unrelenting in keeping the book even as the other three players scream at us to just give it up. Mr. Paper for some reason decides not to run immediately wanting to be a badass and takes one more shot:mad:. He gets kidnapped has hand chopped off and is sold to kobolds as a slave. I as party leader decide we need to go save him and so we venture off to the Dm's surprise i might add since he didn't expect us to go save some guy we knew for about 4 days. The Kobolds outnumber us greatly so we decide to negotiate instead of going in guns blazing. They say they'll give back their slave/sacrifice if we go retrieve a holy relic of theirs that was stolen by a troglodyte tribe they're at war with. We head over to the cave and after some piss poor steath rolls and choice of hallway clang like symbols and activate the alarm traps. The several alarm traps. We are descended upon by hoards of enemies which rip the worlds worst druid to shreds because he as a druid was always getting into melee combat. I decide to jump in and help and am summarily ripped to shreds by enemies while the rest of the party flees like cowards. This also led back to some other sub plot we werent yet aware of so our failure to complete the dungeon led to the summoning of a balor demon within the cave and later some sort of EVIL DEITY. And this was all over a single book

Hope that story didnt bore you too much

Well I think it was more so a scam set up for anyone smart enough to realize the value of the book and we just happened to be the ones to fall for it. And they probably had agents in tne area who were told that someone fell for the trap and then they tailed us from there.

I created a doctor for a Fallout-style campaign. He was going to be sarcastic, but skilled and does care deep down.
During the course of the campaign he's had several horrible incidents with the dice, which has led hilariously to him having the highest kill count on the team.
So I now play him as a less-skilled doctor who wants to help do what's right, gets often into trouble, and occasionally succeeds in assisting the good fight.

We were playing Magical Burst, and my character had control over emotions but none herself. When asked what her everyday life was like, the answer was that she was like a machine, going where her father told her to, doing what he asked, but never responding to anything with more than a simple explanation of what she was doing, and why. During her free time she sat in her room, in the dark, on her blanket. Everyone who she went to school with avoided her, and pretended she didn't exist, because she basically didn't, and she had no major impact on their lives. And then she got her powers, and nothing changed too much, except now she spent her free time investigating gruesome murders and killing demons. Later one of her defining physical traits was that she was paraplegic, due to her legs being shattered in a fight. This was really the epitome of her character, as while she had the power to heal her legs, the fact that they were broken was more of a positive than a negative, because she could use her magic to get around, and the broken legs would make me people more inclined to worry and care for her, and thus more easily manipulable to her schemes.

Well her legs were broken after a random section of the city blew up, and the next few sessions were spent trying (and failing) to stop the rest of it from exploding.
Also I chose Hayate because I needed a magical little girl in a wheel chair and she's the first that came to mind. I also don't think googling "little girl in a wheelchair" would have been a smart idea.

When I had my first long running Game I had a guy named Flint

I started in a campaign a long time ago after I had just played assassins creed 2, I wanted to combine Ezio with drow's darkness.
The DM saw my character's alignment CG and thought, oh, a sweet little wanabe drizzt clone, he'll die soon as exposed as he is. (This was a difficult campaign)

So I took swordsage and shadowdancer and went rogue (with anything that offered an easy sneak attack dice). At level 12 I was the only remaining original character. I by default lead the campaign, tearing ass through dragons. At level 12, no gestault.

Flint went from young happy optimistic sneak, into a hardcore badass striking phoes from 20 feat away with chains who was constantly unimpressed with what his teammates (which he considered his followers), he basically became the face of the game until its end and bounced between CG and NG, he was an insanely cruel 'greater good' type.

All this from a character the DM once called the squishiest tank

I was playing as a Lt. Cmdr (Ret.) Richard Dyson, of the Solomani Confederation. Since the Solomanis are essentially the USSR in spaaaace, I decided to play that to the hilt and made him an undercover agent of the Space KGB SolSec who would be secretly reporting to his superiors the antics of our party. Thus Vladimir Putin, in his KGB days.

What They Saw: I somehow drifted to the leadership role of our silly, silly band (which I can only assume was compiled via Space Craigslist) thanks to being the only person who knew how to work the space ship as well as a veteran navy man, thus...Sean Connery as Marko Ramius.

What I Played: Our second mission was to assassinate one (1) diplomat in a dome city on an airless planet. As a direct result of my increasingly ludicrous (lack of a) plan, we managed to kill him...along with half a million other people. Thus, Slim Pickens riding the bomb.

VincentTakeda

This is Sango and Miroku from inu yasha. The running joke is he's a shameless pervert who gropes every girl he meets, and though he has a serious romantic interest in sango, he seems to be unable to stop his impulses. While every other girl reacts in an exclusively introspective or judgemental way, sango is the only one who reacts with what could be described as jealousy.

She gives him hell for it daily, but she also really likes him. This was a long slow developing romance over the course of something to the tune of like 7 seasons... So grabbing his butt is an affectionate way of either saying

'If this is how you show interest, I want you to know that i'm interested'
or
'See how you like it... oh wait... you do.'

Moral of the story... A little trouble with impulse control can be channeled in a good way, when it makes you realize you care.

I had originally built a pathfinder summoner who's eidolon was a fightin girl. He'd be kind of her trainer/mentor.
She likes him because he's able to manipulate the world around him through force of will (full caster)
and he likes her because her very existance is the result of nature responding to will. Will given form. She's biodigital jazz, man.

The gm sees this as creepy pervert harem dude... Making me realize this is a possibility to explore a relationship with the eidolon, with the challenge to be pulling it off without making it creepy or pervy. That sweet congruence of 'I need someone by my side who is special just for me' combined with 'her presence is a manifestation of wanting to be by your side.' reminded me of these anime pairs.

The relationship between sango and miroku and k1 and belldandy are both relationships that were built on an enduring trust and admiration in each other, but not on 'gettin it on as quickly as possible'. A slower, sweeter cultivation.

I didnt know anything about pathfinder when the APG came out, but after playing this class it became my single most enjoyed character i've played in 3 decades, impossible to do with 2e. Afterwards I did discover that being romantically involved with your eidolon was a pretty common practice during its playtest. And commonly regarded as squicky.

in this theme, i have had an issue with one GM who, during character creation, makes new house rules that only apply to me, to nerf my character. he did this in both champions(5e) and rogue trader, and had an extremely railroad style. he resfused to let my superhero have ocv above 7, so i had to scrap my ninja and make a demibrick instead. in rogue trader, he denied me the ability to max out a non-combat skill, and then threw out the subsystem for that part of the game entirely after i devoted as many resources to it as i could (i dont game with him anymore). so, its more what i tried to build, what the control-freak GM allowed me to build, and how he actually let me play it.

I played an articulate and highly practical Warforged Barbarian (Yes, he was articulate but could not read. I found that amusing) with a full 5 levels in Warforged Juggernaut. I wanted a character who was intelligent but found humans and other races strange and difficult to understand, and was more at home in nature, where the rules are simpler and more straightforward. He ended up being a very compassionate fellow in the end.

Shirtlessness and hedonism aren't necessarily related. :smalltongue:

But yes, that is - how do you not know who that is? He's practically the most famous anime character of all time! Well if you say so! :smallcool:

I am playing the depressed and pessimistic leader of a squad of generic soldiers (the dolorous edd part). Don't even name most of them, just picked random names like Alice and Bob if I need to refer to them somehow.

Everyone was expecting that he and his squad are going to be cannon fodder, mooks who die at every opportunity, especially since the enemies wildly overpowered them (like soldiers in Attack on Titan who are just giant's chow, or battledroids from Star Wars Prequels who are, well, battledroids).

Turned out that by combination of various things, they turn out to be more of an elite mook squad who even when wildy overpowered and outgunned, keep surviving and even defeating enemies, with help of the more powerful Player Characters. (The Special Operation Squad from Attack on Titan, or the Commando unit from Star Wars Republic Command. Actually originally I meant to put the 501st in the third panel since it fits more, but the general popular culture feel of any stormtrooper squad is pretty much loser squad, so I put a more unique squad there )

(Also I'm pretty sure the most famous anime character of all time is probably Goku.)

Though that reminds me of a gaming story, so.

Explanation:

I made a Cajun survivalist who was the definition of self-reliant. He was okay with a gun, but was a very Macgyver-ish and more about making traps, tracking, wilderness survival, etc. The DM saw him as more of a stereotypical redneck. Against the supernatural critters we were constantly going up against, he was the tracker and would just make and throw pipe bombs and thermite en-masse.

He's Kamina, the gold standard for shonen protagonists, and he's not even the protagonist!

He's from Gurren Lagann, where the writers decided "everything literally runs off fighting spirit".

Is he from Dragon Ball Z or Cowboy Bebop? Then I probably don't know him. I've read a bit of Gurren Lagann once, but nothing really caught my interest.

He made a character who had, among other things, Play On Words (a power that allows you to take something someone just said and twist reality by turning it into a pun, for example: someone says "come on, give me a shot", and bam, they end up with a gun shot, also yes, it works with every variation on "my right to bear arms") and The Word (you say a one-word command and it happens to the person you're commanding, like "sleep" or "bleed" or "burn"). He also had the attributes and skills needed to use these two powers quite competently. Hence, a reality warper who relies on speech, preferably words spoken by other people.

I saw Satan personified because this guy has a black belt in Pun-Fu. He constantly finds play on words I never would have suspected exist, I swear he operates on a whole other level than us mortals.
I do not know what possessed me to tell him the game includes a power allowing him to straight-up weaponize his natural OOC ability.
And like that wasn't enough, he also found several "loopholes" allowing him to use/abuse several of his advantages in ways that were unintended and unforeseen. Advantages I thought were harmless enough.
He could break reality several ways before running out of Aether (the fuel for those funky powers). Did I say one of our other players had Suborned Infrastructure (something that allows a character to gather regularly some Aether for free), and that he was willing to bully the character in-game to "borrow" his Aether if necessary?
I cried inside when I realized the monster I had allowed to exist.
(Bonus part: we're all playing demons, and the GM essentially play their overwhelming antagonist: the God-Machine. So, Satan.)

He ended up playing as the voice of reason (he GMed our previous game and we made him facepalm a lot, so I guess he sympathizes with GMs trying but failing at making plots foolproof, because whenever PCs are involved, they can never fully be foolproof). He hasn't used any of his powers yet, presumably planning on using them when there's a real emergency.
In addition, his character (well, his Cover, but whatever) is that of a retired old guy whose name is a pun on a wise old man's name in a famous French TV show.
So that makes Gandalf a decent mixed reference. Old wise man with huge powers he won't abuse, looking after his less experienced teammates.

In a homebrew Star Wars game set after the death of Palpatine, but before the Empire was completely destroyed. My plan was to make an Imperial Pilot whose father had died on the 2nd Death Star. Mechanically, however, my character is basically a clone of Han Solo; something I didn't realize until the GM saw my character sheet.
In the end, neither one matters because I normally spend all my time keeping my teammates from bashing in heads, and getting their heads bashed in - usually by lying until I'm blue in the face.

Oxyribo is a Bio-Android from an alternate timeline, and an attempt to recreate Cell.

I originally intended for him to be a character like Yamcha or Piccolo, or Vegeta, start off as an antagonist and then become a Protagonist later.

The other PLayers knew this, but in character, another PC was a Cyborg from another alternate timeline who suffered directly under Gero, and didn't take well to an android praising Dr.Gero and claiming to be perfect.

There was a "fight" and another, more pacifistic PC got involved, and I ended up being heel faced turned more or less instantly.

He's currently engaged in stopping pointless bloodshed and hates people who use others(because his creators treated him like a tool instead of like a person), but he tends to solve problems with his fists and thinks every problem can be solved is he's just strong enough.

Basically a more arrogant Goku.

We're playing a game of Rifts in the Three Galaxies setting, so I went for a smuggler runner (damn you, insistent terminology). GM kind of figured, "Well, it's his ship, so he's the pilot of it, let's throw a bunch of ship-to-ship combat in!

Then it dawned on me that I had employed a cyborg who had stolen a top-of-the-line, top-secret chassis from Naruni Enterprises, a slug monster that had escaped from the Splugorth testing labs, and a psionic mechanic/power armor pilot who had ripped off parts from pretty much everyone else. My character is now on high blood pressure meds thanks to all the power-players in the Galaxies who should probably be after him at any moment.

I basically made two lesbian DBZ Androids who ended up together, are real snarky and make a lot of pop-cultural references.

The other players saw them as a cute couple and since DBZ fusion exists....

but since the team is full of internal problems, conflict and drama between the various PC's, the red-head Android has basically taken it on herself to try and mediate everything and keep everyone on track, essentially becoming a human badass surrounded by crazy aliens, trying to lead everyone to fight a great evil. thus she has now become snarky teenage kung-fu Shepard.

Explanation
My favorite and most useless character I've ever made. Sir Squeeb, Goblin Ka-nig-hit. On these boards in a PBP all goblin game. Where everyone else was trying to make chaotic and raging loonies I thought it would be fun to make a LG goblin. Backstory, as a child the poor goblin was nearly eaten by a bear, but saved by a wandering paladin. So since then Squeeb has dedicated his life to following a knightly code.

I originally meant to play him seriously, with a few mispronunciations or misconceptions on what a knight truly was. The GM saw a cavalier and front-liner for the party. That didn't last long, a mixture of terrible rolls and poor starting stats (hard to make a goblin that focuses on strength). However, he was so optimistic and friendly with everyone. Naive, and making a lot of silly errors his accomplishments were:
being less effective in combat than his pig (named Noble Steed) he never actually rode.
Falling asleep while trying to patrol the entire village.
Fell off the Squeely Nord, a piglet that the goblins were afraid of.
Entirely missed the epic conclusion fight with an evil goblin witch because he had tripped in a swamp and fell in poo.

He was so useless, but so fun. Trying to kneel in front of the goblin king, but not knowing what to do afterwards so he just decided to sit down awkwardly. Always trying to help (and often failing). Saying "Huzzah!" and "Tally the hoes!" Ahh, so fun.

What I played
http://www.theimaginativeconservative.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/the-godfather-508d945641aed.jpg

Explanation
So on proboards a few years ago, I joined a game that was sort of a heavily modified Mutants and Masterminds game, where you could decide at character creation to be a hero, villain, or rogue. So, since I normally pick bruisers I decided to do something different and made a mind-reader with absolutely no combat abilities whatsoever who was non-affiliated with either side.

The GM straight up told me that my character would die if he ever got into a serious situation. The game was supposed to be fairly lethal. I say I'm fine with that (I had a backup character in mind) and start Arnold Roth, mild mannered mind-reader with a small position in local government.

Long story short, my character read the minds of every character he came in contact with, found out their various secrets and secret identities and blackmailed everyone to dancing to his tune, and offered them their greatest desires to do what he said. He eventually became the Comptroller of the city, and for all intents and purposes the secret leader of the villain faction and city government.

So I more or less ran the city for about a year of real time before it became really obvious the GM was having it out for me. There was one player who was controlling a character that could shoot lava or something. He and a rather generic monstrous type were the two strongest fighter types. Anyway, lava guy was getting annoyed by my character micro-managing him and telling where he could and couldn't rob. And all of a sudden, the GM started giving him more experience than everyone else, and the player spent about a month or two buffing up his Will Defense so my character could no longer read his mind. It was all pretty obvious that he was trying to usurp my character's throne. But I wanted to play it by the book, so I couldn't just have him killed without my character having some proof.

Luckily, the player was about as dumb as his character. So, when his revolt was about to go down we had a little confrontation, and he brought along a few of his lackeys in case I was going to try something. And so, when Roth couldn't read the lava guys mind anymore, he just started reading the minions. Found out about the plan, and hired the other brute to beat lava guy up for me. Had to offer him a specific heroes home address and a third of the cities cash criminal cash flow. But I had a few ideas how to get rid of him as well.

And then the day after the revolt failed, the GM and the lava guy's player just stopped showing up. This remains the only time I ever annoyed a GM into leaving their game. I'm really proud of that.

A high-Cha bard/dancer type who's had the entirety of the plot/in-game interaction focus around her chesticles?

I'm not sure I can see the story behind this. I'm not sure if I want to see the story behind this.

I think the story is pretty up front.

...Not seeing it.

The key word is 'scantily'.

I think the joke is how the camera becomes progressively more centered around her heaving chest.

He actually tried at one point, getting help with the dwarf rigger who had Chemistry knowledge. He succeeded. :smallcool:

This. ^
Then again explaining a joke makes it less funny.

7th Sea (flashy swashbuckling game, if anyone doesn't know) - I was trying to make a courtesan who could at least hold her own in combat, success was... mixed.

A classic AD&D campaign. I rolled up a mage/thief. I was planning on playing a supporting type character who stayed away from combat, but it turned out that a high dex + the elf bonus with bows, plus how OP bows are in old AD&D, plus a couple of good rolls, meant that I was the party's most effective combatant by far.

The first RPG I was ever in, Doctor Who Adventures in Time & Space, I made a Silurian (lizardman) entrepreneur / scientist. However I spent most of my points in charisma & hypnotism (because I thought having hypnotic abilities sounded cool), and the character had the poor impulse control trait, which the GM house-ruled as "If you say an idea, the character has to go with it". So I ended up being the party face who could convince/hypnotize into belief anyone of anything, but did things like trying to convince prison guards that we needed our weapons to restrain an evil party member and getting a critical success, which ended up with them hidden in a different cell on the other side of the fortress we were in and the like. Also, had lots of fun with people getting so drawn in by my character's presence and magnetism that they would flirt with him or just admire his voice and not care that he was a humanoid lizard.

Playing Mutant City Blues (which is basically NCIS: X-Men), I rolled up a scientist who wanted to discover the source of superpowers and solve mysteries FOR SCIENCE! Unfortunately, in the first session I quarantined a player with a disease that makes mutants explode and yelled at people like I was House, so got branded the Mad Scientist, not the chill coroner. By the end of the game, my character was making weird infusions to give other people powers and try to grow new ones for himself.
The last image in Mohinder Suresh from Heroes, who did superpowers experimentation on himself to become a body-horror Spider-man.

Are we still doing this? Well, here's an old one

This was an anti-paladin for a group that was supposed to be good and neutral, where he were to conceal that he had fallen. however the party turned out to care only about getting paid and never discovered he had fallen. he on the other hand still did some paladin stuff, even protecting commoners and such

Man I forgot about this thread. Surprised it's still around. Might as well share a recent one from one of the longest running campaigns I've ever participated in. Kingmaker levels 1-17, and it was my first time playing Pathfinder with my group having finally migrated over from 3.5 as our main D&D system.

http://i.imgur.com/CQgVJCU.png

-This is actually the pic I used for my character sheet, as a generic female archer. First time playing the system and we're starting at level 1. I hear Path of War is neat, so I decide to roll up a pretty basic human hawkguard warder planning to just shoot people and figure things out as I went along. Didn't even end up writing the full backstory for her until around halfway through the campaign even, that's how little I expected to be attached to the character. Turns out to be the longest running character I've ever played. Go figure.

-Turns out ranged combat can be pretty effective in pathfinder when optimized. Wings of Flying + Solar Wind + ported over Splitting Enhancement from 3.5 = murdering pretty much every encounter from on high with extreme prejudice. Personally ended the final boss while playing the Final Flash theme, irony be damned. Altogether pretty satisfying, though somewhat at the expense of my GM's ability to challenge the party conventionally. Enemy HP started noticeably ballooning artificially to keep up with the increased DPR to the point that I started having to tone it down a bit.

-Minus the romantic undertones and whole family alchemy secret backstory, Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty close even though Roy Mustang doesn't map onto our King at all. Spymaster and resident party sniper. She was basically the king's right hand woman, willing to do anything and everything to see the ambition of building a strong and stable kingdom to fruition.
