Another rule that might trip you up is that in D&D, adding a x2 to a x2 modifier actually gets you a x3, not x4. This typically comes up when you start stacking power attack modifiers. It might be more easy to think of x2 as instead +100%, so then your x2 + x2 is instead +100% + +100%, or x3.

Except in the case of real world units, like hours marched x miles per hour.
