Our theme this month is...
Ponies! Ponies everywhere!
With the rising popularity of Ponies on the Internet, I figured it might be interesting to shake things up a bit and have an Iron Avatarist based on Ponies. Do your best, everypony!

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best Ponytar (Any creation of 120x120 or smaller. Please do not include "large versions". The avatar must stand alone.)
Best OOTS Ponytar (Any OOTS-based crossover.)
Most Magical Equestrian (Any character (or small group) larger than the above.)
Strongest Friendship (Any full scene larger than the above.)
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never won a prize in any of these competitions before)

And, of course, the Best Overall award.

And as an extra, The Ruki's Choice Award, which I will give to whatever entry I personally like the most from any category.

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by February 1st, 2012. at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you're entering in. Additionally, if you've never won anything in a previous contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry".

3. Every entry must include an italic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Ponytar
RainbowDash's Wings got nothing on Ruki's

4. All entries may be submitted ONCE and for ONE single category. Exceptions to this include: Best Rookie Entries will be submitted for both categories, and all entries are contestants for the Best Overall and Ruki's Choice awards.
4.b. Another exception, when submitting a large scene, it is allowed to submit one single character from the scene as an Avatar. For example: If you submit a large comic, you may submit the character used for that comic separately.

5. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

6. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

7. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

8. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

9. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.

10. You are allowed to enter any artwork created before the contest, but you are limited to two pre-made entries per category. There is no limit for entries made for the contest. This rule still requires you to adhere to rule 5.

11. You may not submit entries made by character creators.

Good luck!

However, I'm stumped on finding a way to produce digital art... I have a paper sketch drawn but no working scanner, as well as no experience in any drawing program other than Windows XP MS Paint. The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) and Inkscape (http://inkscape.org/) are your two best bets if you don't want to spend cash on software.

The GIMP is a sort of free Photoshop, as it uses Raster Graphics, and is quite close to the way Photoshop works, with layers, filters, masks, and so on. Inkscape is closer to Adobe Illustrator in that it's Vector Graphics (and seems to be preferred by most people on this site.

That aside, if you already have access to Photoshop, it might be your best bet. Inkscape takes some practice if you've never used Vector Graphics before, and the GIMP, while an excellent application, falls a little short when compared to Photoshop.

You can get a digital copy of your drawings with a digital camera or smartphone. And in additional to GIMP and Inkscape, you could try MyPaint (http://mypaint.intilinux.com/). It's free and available on all the major OSes. It emulates the traditional tools of the artist: oil, watercolours, pastels, charcoal, chalk; so you might find it easier to work with.

I have certainly heard of these programs before, but I don't have Photoshop or AI. I think I'm more comfortable with raster based programs rather than vectors, which is one reason I've avoided Inkscape all these years. Also, I don't think my old computer could handle Inkscape.

Do you perhaps have a working digital camera? I take photographs of my sketches and put into the program since I'm to cheap to buy a scanner.

I have a digital camera, but always assumed cameras do not work well to capture something on paper, because of ... aspect distortion? Is that the right term? Also, I realized I can use the scanners available at our school and save them on a flash drive.

I'm most familiar with tools like the pencil that simply replace the pixels the cursor moves over without any fancy blending or transparency... MyPaint sounds confusingly complicated by simulating real life media. If I remember, I'll take a look at it later.

They're certainly encouraging results. By any chance do you use a simple mouse or a graphic tablet to draw digitally?

There is some skew distortion if you don't get the camera exactly over the centre of the image.

If you want to get serious about drawing on a computer, get a graphics tablet or a graphics tablet-screen hybrid. I use a track ball, an older version of this (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs/devices/4680). But then I don't do much drawing, so it and Inkscape fulfills my needs.

A Wacom Bamboo One tablet. Always been better at pen-like tools than mouses, but I presume it could be a matter of what I am used to.

Then you could just use good ol' Paint (or whatever your OS supports). I once saw a video of someone creating a really good replica of Mona Lisa using Paint. It all depends on talent. For example, I couldn't create anything useful even with the most sophisticated software. I like Inkscape because with vector graphics, it's pretty easy to replicate OOTS style. It's mostly simple geometric shapes.

So I have this kinda great idea, but I'm not sure I got the skill in pony style to pull it off. So I'll just tell the rest of you in case you find it cool enough to use it.

The four horsemen of the apocalypse: as ponies.

Interesting note, apparently the lineup changes based on who you ask. There always seems to be War, Famine and Death, but the fourth is either Pestilence or Conquest (I went with Conquest :smalltongue:).

War and Conquest are pretty much two sides of the same coin, though.

Not necessarily. War is the fighting part. Conquest is being subjugated by another tribe / nation / culture. That part can go on for a very long time after the fighting is over.

Never heard about Conquest. Was always pestilence, I thought. (and then there's Mr Soak... :smalltongue:)

I'd actually always heard Pestilence too, then I looked up some stuff and found this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Horsemen_of_the_Apocalypse#Pestilence.2C_War. 2C_Famine.2C_and_Death). I'm still not sure if it's 100% right (I always hold some doubt in reserve for wikipedia) but I went with it 'cause it was different.

Yeah, if you look at where they're introduced in the Bible the first one "went forth conquering, and to conquer." And then the second one had power "to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another." I'm not actually sure where Pestilence comes from, unless it's the mention of "beasts of the earth" in the final lineup.

(All biblical quotations in this post are taken from the King James Version.)

Also, sorry, IO, but I know somewhat less about Care Bears than I do about G3 Pony (probably my least-familiar generation), so I'm not the one to make that image. Thanks for the compliment, though.

I believe the appropriate category for this is Best OOTS Ponytar. Best Ponytar is for creations 120x120 or smaller.

Right, it's over, everypony.

No more entries please!

New contest will be up tomorrow morning. Results for Vale Tudo will be up within 10 days, I hope. Results for this contest will be complicated as I've never made pony art before.... Gonna have to try my hand at it.
