Just as the title says, does greater dispel magic affect things like a Marilith's Summon Tanarri?

if it's (Sp) or a spell, yes. if it's (Su), or (Ex) or natural (but the latter two would be ridiculous), no.

Well yes, but to clarify another point, it has to be a 'summon', rather than a 'calling' effect.

In this case, a Demon's 'summon' ability is not only described as a such, but is explicitly derived from the summon monster spell and said to work as such. Hence, all told, it is definitely affected by dispel magic spells, according to relevant CL.

Thankfully all the Demon's summon abilities are of a pitifully low caster level.

SRD Quote: If no caster level is specified, the caster level is equal to the creature’s Hit Dice.

I wouldn't categorize CL=HD~=CR as being pitifully low. That's what a NPC caster would have anyway.

Most Devils/Demons have a CR that is -3 to +3 of their hit die, so a Dispel from a spellcaster that would meet that CR challenge has a ~50% chance of working. Of course a lot of spellcasters have Caster Level and/or dispel boosts (outside of core)

1.To nitpick, in core, only the pit fiend has HD that's 2 less than CR. Everyone else, both demon or devil, is -1 or above.

2.Demons/Devils are not your standard CR=ECL type encounters. They're top-ranking 'boss' encounters(like top 3, up there with undead and dragons, beating out aberrations simply cause they're proprietary)d, which means as high as ECL +4 for their CR. That's more like a 30 percent chance of working, and on an ability that the devil/demon quite likely used before the combat even started.

3.What's good for the goose is good for the gander. An outsider can raise his caster level as well, and demons/devils are *VERY* capable of making use of options that a PC often wouldn't touch, such as sacrificing rules.
