Our timelines differ somewhere in the early '90s. With the collapse of the Ruble, the Russian economy melted and chaos closed in. The democratically elected government, paralysed by a communist-dominated Duma, crumbled. The Military stepped in, and assumed power. The US, beliving the coup was a smokescreen for soviet expansionism, refused to give and aid. As the West looked on in terror, the conservatives of Russia started a swift and ambitious rearmnament program.
Encouraged by China, Russia started to rattling its saber in the direction of Japan. The two nations had always had the Kuril Islands to squabble over, but now Russia moved more and more forces to Siberia.
Meanwhile, China, enraged by border violations by Burmese troops, swiftly invaded Burma and occupied Rangoon. They then started "military excercises" closer and closer to Taiwan.
India, a growing superpower, took the chance to intervene in the Sri Lankan conflict. With threats of invasion looming, the US President took an unpresidented desicion. While large portions of the fleet was tied up elsewhere, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and itīs battle group would from the Indian Ocean, onward through the straights of Malacca and up to the Kuril Islands.
