i've just been asked by one of my mates to recover assorted photos from her hard disk drive. can anyone suggest a free undelete program?

I had to do that last month. The program I found only worked on images, it was free, and it worked pretty well.
I think it was Pandora Recovery.
I got it from CNET, as they usually do a pretty good job at checking for maleware.

I recommend Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva). It's been good for me, but I've only used it a few times.

If you still need something PhotoRec (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec). .A friend of mine used to work at a data recovery lab, they used this fairly reliable as a level 1 recovery.
