New to 40K, any advice on; models, tactics, painting, and everything

My friend has convinced me to play 40K and I could use some advice from experienced players.

So far I've chosen to learn the game using Space Marines. I've got the 40K rule book, SM Codex, and two Tactical Squads. I plan to pick up the models I need to play and grab additional models as time goes on. Also I figure I'll paint them as Ultramarines.
