Draw your Friends! XIV

For various reasons, it's been a while since we had a DYF competition/ round robin game/ challenge. I've talked to Pink-Haired August and he says he'd be up for another round if there are willing participants, at least one other forumite mentioned has mentioned that they miss the game, so I thought an attempt at a revival was in order.

This round's theme is:

COMEDY[Have pfun]

That's nice but...
What on Earth is "DYF"?

DYF stands for "Draw Your Friends"; it's a GitP forum art exchange in which each participant is given a randomly selected fellow-participant to draw for, everybody does their artwork in secret and then PMs it to the host (not to their recipient) and then after the deadline has passed (about a week, though there's space between the sign-ups and the actual challenge begining as well) the art is released and everyone has a chance to guess who made what for whom. The guessing stage is not mandatory but can be quite interesting. After the guessing stage there is a final reveal where the hosts announce who really did make what for whom.

General Guidelines and Previous Incarnations of DYF:

Each round usually has a loose theme, which is not mandatory, looking at the archive at the bottom will probably provide a good idea of how they go.

You don't, strictly speaking, have to 'draw' your friends, in fact, wacky formats are pretty much encouraged, so photographs of sculptures (do macaroni pictures count as sculptures? they're definately allowed either way) are also allowed and the art style is not set in anyway so digital and traditional media are both fine.
Probably the most typical gift in DYF is an avatar based on the a pre-existing avatar, but work does not need to be avatar sized and it doesn't need to include features of your recipient's existing avatar either. It still can, it just doesn't have to.
Since it's an online challenge, you do of course need to have a way to get your gift online for your recipient but that doesn't mean it has to be digital art.

If it's Called "Draw Your Friends" Does that Mean I Can't Play if I Don't Know the Other Players?

It most certainly does not.
We call it Draw Your Friends in the hopes that the people who draw for each other become friends, as opposed to the pre-supposition that everyone playing will already be buddies. A lot of people sign up for multiple rounds and often people do know each other, or consider each other friends already, but that's not how it has to be. Besides - someone could sign up for a challenge that has eight of their friends and one stranger on the participants list and end up being randomly assigned the stranger - and that wouldn't be a Bad Thing.
Even if you are quite (or very) new in these parts you can still sign up, DYF participants can be surprisingly resourceful, so you needn't worry too much on that account either.
(I guess I should also say at this point that there are rules about the discussion of how long members have been on the forums so this is a subject that shouldn't be talked about a whole lot)

On the Origin of the DYF Challenge:

The challenge was originally started and revived by previous The Grandmaster of Friendly Administration, Fin and araveugnitsuga then came on board as a co-host and eventually took over hosting the challenge entirely. This time round I'm planning on helping him with the hosting stuff to reduce his workload, seeing as it was a two-man job for quite a while.

About the Workload and What to Do if you Miss the Boat:

Please don't sign up unless you think you can commit to the challenge, although one should also bearing mind that in DYF it really is the thought that counts - you don't need to pull your hair out for a whole week fretting over whether it's something your recipient will like. If you put thought into it, chances are they'll like it!

Themes are announced after sign-ups and after people are assigned their recipients and are completely optional. The first eight to volunteers get the places, barring any sudden disappearances. If there's demand for it, there will probably be a 'wishlist' that people who miss out this time can sign up for. Guidelines for that will be posted if it comes up.

Provisional starting date is a week after sign-ups finish.

I suppose it's safe to say that me and that other anonymous forum member weren't the only ones who missed DYF.

I should probably point out: since this is a revival and I'm new (to co-hosting) things in this round might be a little different to things in the most recent rounds, but any changes will be minor and will be made to try and make DYF more like the core concept (or just easier to manage).

One thing that Pinky and I have been discussing is whether or not it would be worthwhile to re-instate the temporary host account for the guessing stage. It's fairly easy not to cheat and DYF basically relies on an honour system so Pinky's questioned whether it's worth the extra admin, but I'm kind of interested in giving it a go just because it heightens the mystery somewhat - particularly if the hosts alter the file names when they upload the gifts. If I'm not guessing then I'd be happy to handle re-uploading and renaming the gifts so long as the account/folder was only temporary and could be wiped clean after the final reveal.
If anybody has thoughts on that it might help us/me decide.

I though about doing something like that for christmas but didn't go through with it. Thanks for doing it, Eleanor_Rigbyl. it would ahve been sad if this had died just yet. that said if this thing relives again, maybe we could go with that idea of making a gellery for ti (Pinky still has all the images in a gallery ?)

Anyway. In.

I thought of doing it in the Christmas Break too
I had way too much stuff going on to justify it though. Don't think I could have participated. The benefit of our procrastination is that now Pinky's around to help us out.

I still think DYF gallery would be swell, although I can't help out with that much right now. I can ask araveugnitsuga about it though.

Sign ups nearly done now, eh?

You're just in time: last place is yours, Akrim

I think it's full, but stick me on wishlist. :)

I haven't finalised how the wishlist works (I need to brush up on the rules for previous rounds) but you're on the wishlist. For one thing, I think you're the first person to have posted in this thread who's not been in a round yet (although I don't remember having been in one with Alarra - so she might be new to it too - I seem to remember she'd been in at least one before I started playing though :smallconfused:)

Potential Wishlist-ees: expressing interest in the wish list is fine (and probably encouraged, really) but please understand that since this is a revival we don't know how many places the next round will have, when it will take place etc, etc. Also, people probably ought to re-affirm their interest closer to the time of the next round just to be sure they're still free to play.
Otherwise I think 'first come first served' still stands, although - for fairly obvious reasons - people who got into this round can't sign up for the advanced wish list for the next round because that might deprive folk. I think people who've browsed the DYF archives probably already appreciate that though, so ... pointless reminder is pointless.

Now that we have our contestants, the sorting shall begin and participants ought to be receiving their PMs shortly. (Probably not 'til Monday UK time at least though: I've got travel plans for this weekend)

I am also new to this. I was on a wishlist on the last thread.

I felt sure I'd seen your name in a DYF thread somewhere.

I had wondered whether the wishlist from the last challenge should roll over into this one, but I figured since the gap between that round and this one was so big that might be difficult, logistically speaking. However, if there are people on that last wishlist who didn't make it into this round they will retrospectively be added to this round's wishlist, unless they say they're no longer interested/able to participate or they've left the forums or whatever closer to the time.

ETA [having peeked at old thread]: So that means the current wishlisht would currently include Teutonic Knight and Mazeburn, although TK will need to reaffirm interest closer to the time of the next round (assuming there is a next round).

That's A.OK, smuchmuch. I decided not to mention extensions but they haven't been culled, don't worry. Also: the dates haven't been set yet so I don't know when we'll start for sure, let alone when we'll finish (they'll be set early this week). I was going to wait for extra confirmation from you smuchmuch, but since araveugnitsuga and I are planning to send the PMs out in about an hour I've decided to just go ahead and assume you'd rather be in the next round than this one (that did seem to be what you were saying, after all) and since you'd have less than a week really I've decided to give the slot to Mazeburn since I've not allowed time to contact and hear back from TK.
Hope that's ok.

A SPEECH

Eleanor_Rigby:
I thought it would be nice to include a THE SPEECH element here, but my speechification skills aren't known far and wide for their quality (which is poor, like... dirt poor, so that's probably for the best). I enjoyed this round and I enjoyed playing co-host but I'm not quite sure what to say about it... So I guess I'd like to thank the production team all our lovely participants!
For some reason stand-up comedy performed by somebody's character wasn't something I expected to see, so that was a nice surprise: I've no idea why I didn't expect to see it because I watch a fair bit of stand-up comedy (pretty much just on TV though so it's all been cleaned up) but I was surprised to see it all the same, and the lighting in there is lovely. I also found Dogmantra's piece a lovely blend between the charming and the terrifying and the multimedia nature of is just... well, very fun, basically! Which is a descriptor that fits with all of the entries pretty nicely, actually.
I don't know about you guys but I feel like we've met our objective pretty well.
As for my own gift; a comedy mask Rigby is a pretty sweet companion piece to the Shakespearean Tragedy Lilla Rigby that araveugnitsuga gave me in the Literature round, it's very nicely done and I really like the colours. That last bit sounds a bit obvious, but thanks to all the shading and the style and what not, she's got lots of extra colour to her, so it's worth pointing out, in my opinion. Plus, in typical DYF tradition, even though she's been drawn in a completely new style, Lilla Rigby is still looking down - her head's upright, but her eyes are still slightly downcast, which is rather nifty. :smallcool:
All in all, this round made me smile a lot: which is basically what comedy's for, right?
Eleanor_Rigby would like to acknowledge that seeing Qaera about to suffer injury due to a unseen fruit peel underfoot or seeing araveugnitsuga suffer the shock of being assailed by colourful snake-like paraphenalia when his only crime was a hankering for some sort of canned treat is NO LAUGHING MATTER and should not make people smile, as that would be cruel... but would also like to acknowledge, in the interest of disclosure, that she miiight have smirked anyway.

This looks like fun - when do new people get to sign up?

Since no new thread is open you could ask for beeing on the wishlist. This would guarantee you to be in in the next DYF. Otherwise, when a new thread is open just sign up by leaving a post.

That's it.

I think Zefir's got it about right. I could pencil you into the wishlist here, I suppose... my memory of the rules of DYF is surprisingly bad at times so I'm not 100% on the ins and outs of the wishlist workings. Seems reasonable to put you on the wishlist though.

On the other hand, I'm not sure when the next round will be - I'll need to browse through the archives then confer with araveugnitsuga and I'll also need to look at my own schedule and have a think.

I felt slightly silly for not recognising the character in Zefir's gift for you straight away, since I'd read the comic he's from and commented on it - especially since it's such a good likeness! Doy. Got there in the end though, and I laughed too.

I'm glad you enjoyed playing - I always have lots of fun with DYF too though t'was pretty weird being one of the hosts this time. So glad araveugnitsuga was there to co-host with me though, because otherwise you guys, honestly... :smalleek:

Speaking of which... I am so lazy about switching out my avatars. Will have to see how this latest gift looks when it's avatar sized, otherwise I'll try and find a way to put it in an extended signature... Where there's a will there's a way.

Squee! Looks awesome. :3 About time I got an OOTS-style avatar, I guess. Will rehost it later (when I'm not at work!) but just used it from the link you gave for now.

Mazeburn, are you perchance familiar with the source material from whence my avatar comes? I ask only because the facial expression is very very Kendall Flowers.

Somehow this drifted out of my mind... well, now I guess it's time for a new avatar. :smalltongue:

[Flexes fingers] so, I made myself a banner out of the DYF gifts I got so far and I have an extended signature... I just have to decide if the banner's acceptable or an abberation (I had to do a lot of scaling down and overlapping to fit them all in - I was aiming for something like Oblivion's but since I decided to include all the pieces and not just the avatar sized ones it wasn't as easy a job.)

Relatively pleased with my latest avatar though - I hope you don't mind that I cut her up, Alarra: I wanted to show off the detailing...

Also, I don't think I've edited the first post yet to reflect the comments on the wishlist. I'll check back here before the next round begins though so that it matches up with people's requests though, no worries...

You might want to increase the size of slots available, otherwise half the slots will be filled with wishlist people. For next time of course.

I wasn't as easy to make as it looks! :smallwink: And you reminded me that I haven't updated it in a while and that it is going to be quite the challenge to fit everything in the allowed space... :smallsigh:

Sign me up for the next round as well. And could someone make me a banner, too? unfortunately one of mine was forever lost to the annals of time, but smuchmuch did double up in another round, so it evens out.

Sign me up for the next round as well.
Since you participated in this round, you need to sign up by posting in the next thread because the wishlist is for those not participating in that round.

This is sadly true, though I wasn't very explicit in my mention of it in the first post.
No rules prevent you from signing up when the new thread pops up though.
