Niala draws her cloak closer around her, cursing her lack of foresight to bring something thicker. It seemed to her that the days and nights were becoming colder, the winds more turbulent and the darkness more foreboding, more so than is to be expected of a cursed land like Ustalav. From within her heart she felt a sense of dread, foreign and oppressive, unlike any she could recall.

Or perhaps she was being paranoid. Ustalav did that to you. She recollected her thoughts long enough to catch wind of three humanoids walking in her direction from branching trails that connected to her own. She slowed her pace, carefully drawing her crossbow so that it slightly peeked out of her cloak. The travelers did not seem hostile but one could never be too careful.

Continuing her pace, she takes a glance at each, taking their full appearance.

I choose Harrowed card #17.

#17 "The Bear"

Hammers (Str): If used before a roll is made, a
hammers card grants you a +8 luck bonus on any one
d20 roll. If used after a roll is made, this bonus is reduced
to +4. You can also use this card to grant a bonus to
another character, as long as you are in the same location
and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of
the roll (such as by distracting a monster, shouting words
of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the
check). Cards of the suit of hammers spent to aid another
character grant only half the listed bonus (+4 before the
roll, +2 after the roll).

or

True Neutral: You may gain a one-time
insight into the future as the spell
augury, using your character level as
your caster level. Meditating on the
particular action in question requires
10 minutes and does not expend
material components.

As Dragomir approaches the strangers walking the road to Ravengro his hand instinctivly finds itself upon the pommel of his heavy mace. He eyes the strangers warily as he approches, noticing at least a few are clearly not natives of his rugged land. Still, he beams them an apprehensive smile taking their measure one at a time until his eyes fall upon the Half-Elf woman brandishing the crossbow.

"No need for that miss. I cannot speak for the others but I'm not looking for any trouble. This land has soaked up enough blood over the years without a need to add ours to the mix."

Dragomir is tall for a Varisian with a strong build, a rugged handsomeness and an air of authority to him. He is garbed in a wolf hide tunic and carries a battle scarred wooden shield strapped against his left arm which he is holding higher than usual as if expecting an attack.

"I am Dragomir Bathory, battle priest of Pharasma and Ustalav and a defender of its peoples. I am headed to Ravengro for the funeral of a dear friend. I have no quarrel with you or any other this day."

I guess I'll take number 12. May I also suggest that you create an OOC thread, Xeno55. So that this one doesn't get cluttered up with not in character posts.

#12 "The Dance"

Keys (Dex): You can spend a keys card to take your turn
immediately. Treat this as a readied action, moving your
initiative to just before the currently acting creature. You
may only take a move or a standard action on this turn.

or

Lawful Good: You may smite evil, as the paladin
ability, gaining the benefits until the start of your
next turn. If you have levels in paladin greater than
half your total Hit Dice, use your paladin level
to determine bonus damage; otherwise, your
bonus damage equals half your character level,
rounded down (minimum 1).

Niala turns to the cleric, recognizing his holy symbol to be that of Pharasma. She would often pass by her temples while traveling through these regions. There was something about his demeanor that put here, though not completely, at ease. Not that she trusted him. She simply deemed that he was not a threat.

She nodded, stowing away her weapon, and said to him: "I am Niala Strombar." Then she was silent once again.

It felt odd, responding with her name in a conversation. Polite conversation, no less. She turned away from him and once again looked upon the two others.

Niala thought it strange that he was headed towards the same town and for the same reason no less...

Gil strolls along his path towards the meeting, sporting a black mourning cloak over his usual armor, but still giving a clear view of the large flail, usually enough to ensure an eventless trip.

Seeing the situation, the small giant throttles toward the encounter point. "Well there, take it easy, you two. No need to hasty here." He takes a glance at Dragomir, his Holy symbol enough to make some assumptions. He definately takes more time eyeing Niala. "Miss, carrying around a weapon at hand is a bad sign on these roads, it invites some... reputation from the locals. Not a nice lass like you would like to attract, i pressume" He mutters, with a slight patronizing tone and quite some leering towards Niala's...figure.

PCs are encouraged to continue introductions with each other even as the GM moves plot elements forward.

You are greeted by Kendra Lorrimor.

Although he was getting on in years, Petros’s death was
rather sudden. His daughter Kendra, a 25- year-old
woman, is deep in mourning. Her eyes are red and puffy
and she dresses in dark, conservative clothes. Trim
and attractive, Kendra greets the PCs with a mixture
of curiosity, sadness, and relief—no one else has
come to pay their respects to her father, and “with
things the way they are in town these days,” very
few folks from Ravengro have come out for the
funeral as well. Kendra waves off questions for
now, promising the PCs that after her father
is buried and they return to her house, she’ll
answer any questions they have—both about
her father’s death and about his will.

She leads the party to the Restlands, the local graveyard where the professor will be buried. You are of course still in your traveling cloths, fully armed. She asks four of you to act as pall bearers. You have a choice of right front, left front, right rear or left rear - servants are prepared for the remaining positions.

WizardSoul
2012-01-18, 10:47 PM
Niala spent the rest of the trip in contemplation. She wanted to ask about the Professor and the going ons in Ravengro but she knew that right now was certainly not the time.

After giving Kendra her brief condolences she takes her place on the right rear of the coffin. As she placed her hand on the casket, she wonders about why she was there. She didn't think often of the professor but now she contemplates her few encounters with the man. She would often run errands for him, delivering tomes and packages the contents of which she could only guess at. What she knew for sure was without him supplying jobs for her those first few months that she wouldn't have lasted in Ustalav. She could't believe that only now, at his funeral, did he realize just how kind he was.

Niala leans closer to the casket, whispering "Thank you, Professor Lorrimor."

All four heroes take up position as pallbearers. Kendra, as the
deceased’s closest living relative, has the job of leading
the somber procession along the Dreamwake—a gravel
pathway that winds through the cemetery. Characters
serving as pallbearers are considered to have both hands
full as they carry the heavy coffin up the road.
As the procession reaches the halfway point along the
Dreamwake, rounding a corner onto a path called the
Eversleep, they’ll see that the way ahead is blocked by a
group of a dozen surly looking locals. They are unarmored,
but some carry ax handles or other improvised weapons.
The tallest of these toughs is an elderly but wiry fellow who says:

“That’s far enough. We been talking, and we don’t want Lorrimor
buried in the Restlands. You can take him upriver and bury him
there if you want, but he ain’t goin’ in the ground here!”

Kendra is swift to respond, her sadness swiftly transforming into
anger.

“What are you talking about?” she cries out. “I arranged it
with Father Grimburrow. He’s waiting for us! The grave’s already
been...”

“You don’t get it, woman. We won’t have a necromancer buried
in the same place as our kin. I suggest you move out while you still
can. Folks are pretty upset about this right now.”

Party members may speak, take action, or await events.

Gil's face turns somber the closer the group got to Ravengro, the space of his glances towards Niala's back becoming longer as we progress into the town.

Once the group enters the Lorrimor household, he stays behind at the treshold, waiting for the rest of the group to approach Kendra before him. Once the rest is done, he trades a couple of akward gestures with her and escorting her while she takes a moment to go off to wash her eyes. He murmurs some words to Kendra on the way, making her snort light her face with a smile for a few seconds, but followed by an swift elbow on the stomach. He stays near the casket for a few moments, then shakes his head, and moves to a corner.

Once at the restlands, he mantains an aloof attitude, taking the left front. He lets out an annoyed sigh at the first sign of the villagers, keeping silent for a while, but not beign able to contain a quiet laugh after Niala's attempt.

He then straightens as possible as he can without unbalancing the casket and says on the firm and audible voice of someone who's used to commoner tomfoolery. "The good Professor was not a necromancer. Period. I know some about those things. You better get some proof right here, right now, or run off." He shifts his weight a bit to pull a necklace with the symbols of Pharasma and Erastil. "The arrangement is made. The dead must rest on the right ground. The Lady can't watch everywhere, and Ole' Deadeye would surely give me a good smack onna head if i were to let you draw more tears from miss Kendra."

Father Grimburrow and a pair of gravediggers are

as part of local tradition, they do not accompany the
pallbearers from the gate to the grave. Besides the PCs,
only a small handful of villagers are attending the
funeral procession. Old friends of Lorrimar, they too
have come to pay their respects. These NPCs consist of
Councilman Vashian Hearthmount, Councilman Gharen
Muricar, tavernkeeper Zokar Elkarid and his 13-yearold
son Pevrin, and Jominda Fallenbridge.

No further
complications prevent the lowering of his coffin into the
open grave by the gravediggers. Father Grimburrow gives
a short sermon, then invites Kendra to say a few words
about her father. Kendra fights back tears and briefly

After the funeral is over and Kendra has said
her goodbyes to the other guests, she invites
the PCs back to her home (so recently
her father’s) for a drink and to hear
his last will and testament. The
Lorrimor residence is a modest
home with crowded bookshelves in every
room. The reading of the professor’s
will requires the presence of Councilman
Vashian Hearthmount (the closest thing Ravengro
has to a solicitor), and he has some other matters to
attend to after the funeral, so he doesn’t arrive for about
an hour.

Vashian arrives precisely on time, in any event. No
Sense Motive check is necessary to note that he doesn’t
completely approve of strangers being involved in local
matters, but he keeps his comments to himself, focusing
his involvement entirely on the reading of Petros’s will.
Kendra isn’t sure what’s contained in the will, since part of
its stipulation was that all of the PCs must be present for
its reading. Councilman Vashian produces a scroll case,
shows that the professor’s personal seal is unbroken, then
breaks the wax and opens the case. As he does, a small iron
key falls out of the tube, clattering noisily onto the table.
Undaunted by the key, the councilman begins to read,
eager to be done with the business and to get back home.

“I, Petros Lorrimor, being of sound mind, do hereby commit to this
parchment my last will and testament. Let it be known that, with
the exception of the specific details below, I leave my home and
personal belongings entire to my daughter Kendra. Use them or
sell them as you see fit, my child.

“Yet beyond the bequeathing of my personal effects, this
document must serve other needs. I have arranged for the reading
of this document to be delayed until all principals can be in
attendance, for I have more than mere inheritance to apportion. I
have two final favors to ask.

“To my old friends, I hate to impose upon you all, but there are
few others who are capable of appreciating the true significance of
what it is I have to ask. As some of you know, I have devoted many
of my studies to all manner of evil, that I might know the enemy and
inform those better positioned to stand against it. For knowledge
of one’s enemy is the surest path to victory over its plans.

“And so, over the course of my lifetime, I have seen fit to acquire
a significant collection of valuable but dangerous tomes, any one
of which in the wrong circumstances could have led to an awkward
legal situation. While the majority of these tomes remain safe under
lock and key at the Lepidstadt University, I fear that a few I have
borrowed remain in a trunk in my Ravengro home. While invaluable
for my work in life, in death, I would prefer not to burden my
daughter with the darker side of my profession, or worse still, the
danger of possessing these tomes herself. As such, I am entrusting
my chest of tomes to you, posthumously. I ask that you please deliver
the collection to my colleagues at the University of Lepidstadt, who
will put them to good use for the betterment of the cause.

“Yet before you leave for Lepidstadt, there is the matter of
another favor—please delay your journey one month and spend
that period of time here in Ravengro to ensure that my daughter is
safe and sound. She has no one to count on now that I am gone,
and if you would aid her in setting things in order for whatever she
desires over the course of this month, you would have my eternal
gratitude. From my savings, I have also willed to each of you a sum
of one hundred platinum coins. For safekeeping, I have left these
funds with Embreth Daramid, one of my most trusted friends in
Lepidstadt—she has been instructed to issue this payment upon
the safe delivery of the borrowed tomes no sooner than one month
after the date of the reading of this will.

“I, Petros Lorrimor, hereby sign this will in Ravengro on this
first day of Calistril, in the year 4711.”

Xeno55
2012-01-22, 10:24 PM
Once the will is read, Councilman Vashian looks to
Kendra, who thanks him and dismisses him. Putting on
a brave face, Kendra thanks the PCs again for coming,
and informs them that she’ll need at least a few weeks
to decide if she wants to sell her family home or remain
here in Ravengro—in the meantime, as stipulated by the
will, she asks the PCs to remain as well. She offers rooms
in her spacious house for the PCs, promising them free

The chest itself is a relatively small object of oak and
iron. Kendra, nervous about the contents, offers the key
to the PCs to give them the honor of opening the chest.
The key fits the lock perfectly, and within are several
old tomes and one relatively new one. The newest tome
sits on the top and bears the phrase “Read me now!”
scratched into the leather cover.

The other tomes comprise the books of dangerous lore
mentioned in his will—three of these have notes tucked
into them indicating that they should be delivered
to one Montagnie Crowl, a professor of antiquities at
Lepidstadt University. The fourth, Manual of the Order
of the Palatine Eye, has a note indicating it should be
delivered to Embreth Daramid, a judge at the Lepidstadt
Courthouse (although the note asks for this delivery in
particular to be handled discreetly, and includes the
address of Embreth’s home so that the PCs can deliver it
there).

You are now free to ask questions, examine the books, or take whatever steps you think right. It is the late afternoon, and Kendra has a cook who is fixing you all dinner.

Many pardons to all, I came as quickly as I could. I came hoping to help the professor but I have come too late, the path from yonder is not straight. I am surprised to hear that I am part of the will, but I have heard Ravengro is being slowly overtaken by the unliving and that is something against which we druids will take a side.

I'm not much of a talker, more of a doer. With Kendra's permission and a nod from those here, i'd like to see if any magic is here within the house, starting with the those books and that chest...

And if anyone has any nasty wounds or ailments, I would be happy to take a look.

If consent is giving, I cast Detect Magic and start scanning the books, the room, and then any other rooms Kendra offers.

"'Read Me Now?' Not exactly subtle, is it?" mutters Vallen at the leather tome. "Bizarre."

After Thalo introduces himself, Vallen shivers instinctively at the thought of the sleepy town being overrun by shambling corpses. His mood blackens further as he remembers the mob, as hostile as it was inept; Vallen hoped the town had better defenders than that.

Gil shakes the hand of Thalo, a bit forcefully perhaps. "Slowly is not the right word. More like "way too slow for these folks to appreciate the work of those who stay around the fringes, making sure no zombie decides to go rot on their crops". Gilbert. I'm from around these parts."

Once Kendra takes him to tour the house. Gil turns to Vallen in a quiet tone. "You, er, whipguy. Valen, right? You seem like s'meone who pays more attention than me. Was there any word about the old man's death at the ceremony? He was wrinkled, sure, but he sure ate healthy, and i saw him once bashing an skeleton with a heavy book. I bet a flask of ale that Lady Pharasma would not had him on his list for at least 5-8 years more. I smell rotten fish around here."

As Thalo attempts to return Gil's handshake with the same amount of force to gauge how strong the man might be. He also tries to get sense of Gil's calling as well as that of the other party members and what their particular calling might be. He notices Vallen's whip and finds it an interesting choice of weapon considering there are no other animals with the group.

Knowing what these guys can do will help me know what I can do to help them.

After Thalo returns from his tour of the rooms he thanks Kendra and says to no on in particular.

I sensed no other magic in the household, which is both good and bad.

Thalo looks down at the chest and the books. With something that sounds like a snort he says...

I have never had much use for books. We druids seldom if ever use them. But every druid knows they are a great source of power to the civilized world. Do the others in the chest contain anything that might be useful?

Switching to Olive as DarkGreen is still too close to Gil...though Olive looks pretty close to Vallen...oh well.

The newest of the books, with the scratched indication "read me," is a journal. The professor's journal is mostly a dense and boring account of his days, what he ate, observations of the weather, etc. However you discover some entries that are circled in red ink.

Circled Entries in the Professor’s Journal

Ten Years Ago:

The Whispering Way is more than just a cabal of necromancers. I see that now. Undeath is their fountain of youth. Uncovering their motivation does not place me at ease as I thought it might. Their desire to be eternal simply makes them more dangerous.

Two Months Ago:

It is as I had feared. The Way is interested in something here in Ravengro. But what could it be?

One Month Ago:

Whatever the Way seeks, I am now convinced their goal is connected to Harrowstone. In retrospect, I suppose it all makes sense—the stories they tell about the ruins in town are certainly chilling enough. It may be time to investigate the ruins, but with everyone in town already being so worked up about them, I’d rather not let the others know about my curiosity—there’s plenty of folks hereabouts who already think I’m a demonologist or a witch or something. Ignorant fools.

Twenty Days Ago:

It is confirmed. The Way seems quite interested in something—no, strike that—someone who was held in Harrowstone. But who, specifically, is the Way after? I need a list of everyone who died the night of the fire. Everyone. The Temple of Pharasma must have such a list.

Eighteen Days Ago:

I see now just how ill prepared I was when I last set out for the Harrowstone. I am lucky to have returned at all. The ghosts, if indeed they were ghosts (for I did not find it prudent to investigate further) prevented me from transcribing the strange symbols I found etched along the foundation—hopefully on my next visit I will be more prepared. Thankfully, the necessary tools to defend against spirits are already here in Ravengro. I know that the church of Pharasma used to store them in a false crypt in the Restlands at the intersection between Eversleep and the Black Path. I am not certain if the current clergy even know of what their predecessors have hidden down below. If my luck holds, I should be able to slip in and out with a few borrowed items.

Seventeen Days Ago:

Tomorrow evening I return to the prison. It is imperative the Way does not finish. My caution has already cost me too much time. I am not sure what will happen if I am too late, but if my theory is right, the entire town could be at risk. I don’t have time to update my will, so I’ll leave this in the chest where it’ll be sure to be found, should the worst come to pass.

According to the journal...the professor was killed a couple of days after seeking the list of the victims in the Harrowstone fire from the Pharasmins. Is there a connection?

And what of the tools the professor mentions? If the Pharasmins are knowledgeable about how to fight undead might we go and see if those tools are still there? We were just near the Restlands this afternoon might we head up there now and take a look under the cover of darkness? Or would it be safer during the day?

The party visits the Temple.

If Gil or Vallen wish to do otherwise they may, for now I am assuming they stay with the party so as to keep the game moving.

This temple is devoted to Pharasma, the Lady of Graves.
Ravengro’s only religious structure, the temple is also the
town’s most elaborate building. Its eastern facade displays
an intricate stained-glass mural depicting a stern Pharasma
judging Count Andachi, one of Tamrivena’s most infamous
previous rulers. Vauran Grimburrow is officially in charge
of the temple, but the day-to-day tending of the flock and
maintenance of the temple and the Restlands are handled by lower
level acolytes.

One young acolyte, barely older than a boy, greets you with the officiousness of a seasoned bureaucrat:

Greetings Strangers. What brings you to Ravengro's
most holy temple of Pharasma?

Vallen decides that, given recent events, he'd better just go along with the party and let someone else do the talking. He didn't think the Pharasmans had a hand in the Professor's murder; more likely he was detected by the cultists at Harrowstone and killed on the spot. The link was tenuous, but it always helped to be vigilant.

She is said to be the one to give the final judgement of an ended life, and your final fate, whatever that is. The best advice i can say is: Don't tie any undead you find with them, they do know to work against them where weapons are just the easy way out, they hate undead, at least the onces i've worked with."

He picks his flail and his bow (with some arrows) with a slight groan, leaving most of his equipment behind, stretching a bit before following them to the temple, picking the Professor's journal if no-one haven't. "Boy, you people sure like to jump to places. It's already getting late around here, and this is not a city full of night walkers, i'm guessing you just had to walk less than i did to come to this place..."

(ooc: Judging from some posts, i'm going to assume that taking account of time and fatigue are of some importance on this adventure)

Or players could try a different approach, or leave the Temple and take different actions. The professor has a huge library at his house, it is possible to research there. Or you could go to town. Or whatever - it doesn't make sense to let yourselves get bogged down here in front of the temple.

I can't imagine how a list of those who died at Harrowstone fifty years ago would be of any value. She turns and leaves the temple where she meets Thalo. Shall we head for that crypt, now? It will get rather dark out here soon.

For the sake of convenience, could we say that someone in the party had the journal and just now gave it to Grimburrow?

Gil brought the journal with him so you can give him the journal without a ret con.
After Niala explains the situation, Thalo responds with a concerned look...
”If Grim reads the journal, he'll know about the tools in the crypt. So yes, let us grab them now. If he asks us about them, we'll deal with it then.”

Gil gives Lorrimor's journal to Grimburrow.

The party advances into the Restlands.

The false crypt mentioned in the professor’s journal is
located in the northeast corner of the Restlands, near
the junction of the paths known as the Eversleep and
the Black Path. The crypt itself is a freestanding granite
mausoleum, the roof of which is decorated with a pair of
leering gargoyle statues. A single stone door with a rustylooking
lock sits in the mausoleum’s south facade.

Once Thalo is convinced the party is alone he gathers them in a huddle and whispers...

"Let's try to force the lock unless someone here can pick it. However, before we do that, let me prepare some magic stones and provide you all with some guidance."

Thalo commands Paris to Defend him he then gathers three sling-sized stones from the ground and casts a spell on them. After that, he turns to the party and casts a spell on them.

Thalo casts Magic Stone on the pebbles and then casts guidance on all three, including himself if possible. Thalo will ready a stone in his sling.

"Niala, if you cannot pick the lock then perhaps you can stand in the back with me. If there is something inside, we don't want to get in the way of Vallen's whip. Okay, let's do this."

Niala discovers that the lock is broken, its clasp melted by acid and then
put back into place so that to casual observation the lock appears intact.

She opens the door.

Within, a flight of stone steps leads down into the
cold earth to a crypt lined with empty niches—no
dead are interred here, though Church records report
that the crypt was one of the first filled in Ravengro’s

So let me see if I undestand.

1) We opened the door and it's only 5' wide

2) The door opens to a small "outer" room, which has a flight of stairs that go down to an inner room.

3) The inner room (what size?) has empty niches. The niches are vertical?

3) The center of the inner room has a 2' dais on which sits a stone sarcophagus.

4) The dust and dirt and tracks are at the top of the stairs in the outer room.

If this is correct....

Thalo takes another look around to see if anyone is watching...

[roll0]

He then looks to Gil and motions towards the dust tracks...

"Gil, can you tell us anything about those tracks, like how long ago they were made and whether they might have been made by the professor? If the tracks aren't talking, then it'd be great if you could lead the way. I can put a light spell on the tip of one of your weapons if you like."

If Gil declines, then Thalo will wait until is clearly dark enough that light is needed and cast light on his spear tip.

The sheriff, Thalo, and any who wish to accompany them head down to the statue:

Other than the looming ruins of Harrowstone on
a nearby hill, Ravengro’s most distinctive
landmark is a 25-foot-tall, moss-covered
stone statue that overlooks the river. The
statue depicts a proud, muscular human
man dressed in leathers and wielding
a truncheon—a depiction of Warden
Hawkran. A total of 25 names—the
guards who died in the fire of 4661, as
well as the warden’s wife, Vesorianna—
are chiseled into the statue’s stone base.
The memorial is a popular meeting spot
for late-night trysts among Ravengro’s young
lovers, for it has just the right mix of tragic
romance and spooky ambience without
actually being on Harrowstone’s supposedly
haunted grounds.

The blood has been cleaned off of the statue, although careful inspection reveals a tiny amount remains in some crevices here and there.

Now just who was this man, Sheriff?

Warden Hawkrun was a great man, who sacrificed himself many years ago to save this village. There was a riot in the Harrowstone Prison, and a terrible fire. The warden sealed the prison trapping all inside, even though it caused the death of himself and many guards. Had he not done so the rioting prisoners, some of them very powerful and dangerous, would have overrun the town and annihilated it.

This is what makes the desecration so mysterious. No one in town would do anything like this, splashing blood on his memorial. So you outsiders become suspects - although it makes no sense that a stranger to the town would do such a thing either.

Sheriff, what happened at the prison? And what kind of prisoners could be dangerous enough to destroy an entire town?

Thalo tries to pick out any tracks that might not lead back to town or might have been made earlier than the mass of new ones. If Gil is available, he casts Guidance on him for assistance.

Survival [roll0]...it kills me that PF Druids are often better trackers than Rangers. I so much prefer 3.5 in requiring the Track feat.

Thalo also inspects the surroundings for any clues.

Perception [roll1]

Thalo's ears perk up at the mention of the riots and the fate of the prisoners. He thinks Niala's questions about the background of the prisoners are right on point. He then has an inspired question...

"Sheriff, apologies, but I did not catch your name in all this. In any event, you mentioned the wife of the warden's name was Vesorianna. Could the 'v' be referring to her? Is there anything you can tell us about her?"

In the old days Harrowstone prison received criminals from all over Ustalev, including those due to be executed, and some for whom execution was too good. Many were very dangerous characters. Some were powerful mages, or so it is said. It was all way before my time, all I know are some stories. I don't think anyone living in town now knows the truth of it all.

My name is Benjan Caeller. Vesorianna had no business in the prison, but for some reason she was there on the day of the disaster. No one knows why. She is also said to have died in the fire, hence her name is here listed with the others. The V symbol makes no sense to me, I suppose it could refer to her but I cannot imagine why.

A ways out from the statue Thalos finds a set of tracks approaching and then leaving the statue. What is unusual about this set is the tracks leaving the statute carry a faint imprint of blood on the heel of one foot - as if the person had stepped in some blood.

Blackjoy

Thalo tries to determine what type of shoes made the tracks and whether they might belong to a man or woman and how much they might weigh. After his assessment, Thalo addresses the sheriff along with his companions.

"Well, it looks like we've got some suspicious tracks over here, blood on a heel. Probably means they killed whatever it was they used to get the blood. Mr. Caeller, if you might allow me a chance to talk things over with my companions..."

Thalo waits until the sheriff is just out of earshot...

"Niala, can you convince the sheriff to deputize us so we can follow the tracks on his authority? Either way, I'd like to follow the tracks, but might be better if we have his backing. If he says yes, I'm wondering if one of us should go back to the house and bring the supplies from the chest. I'm out of healing spells and I'd hate for us to be caught in an ambush. I can wait here with Paris and the two of you can check in on Kendra and grab the 'tools' in case we need them. Peharps Gil will show up as well."

If possible, Thalo casts Guidance on Niala without the sheriff seeing. If the sheriff will see the spell, then Thalo will not cast it.

I think there is some confusion on the "new day"? Xeno, aren't you just saying it was a new day from this morning for spells, not that it is suddenly now a new day? My understanding is that at least three of us are still near the memorial with the sheriff.

Thalo is hoping Naila will just talk to the sheriff right here and then waiting to see if people want to follow the tracks. If so, he has suggested that maybe Vallen and Niala can run back and grab the tools from the crypt.

I think, tomorrow, Grimburrow should be done with the journal. If I'm the one who is confused, let me know.

"Vallen and I should probably take two potions each and Niala, if you stay behind us, you should be safe, but at least carry one potion. Let's divide up the holy water evenly. Vallen and I can each carry a restoration potion? Naila, you might as well carry the arrows since none of us here seems to have a bow, and the scarab case.

Can anyone read these scrolls? They are beyond me.

If that is all good, then let us follow the tracks after both of you have had a look at the scrolls. Any help tracking won't be turned away."

Thalo casts Guidance on Naila and Vallen in case it will help with the tracking or scroll deciphering.

Kaylin had noticed these outsiders to the town as much as any other member, but being more than half an outsider herself, had remained as aloof as one could. But the events of this morning... No one should have desecrated that memorial. The group seemed moderately competent, and the far larger cat than her own beloved Isis was somewhat reassuring. She wouldn't stand out among that group. The villagers had been suspicious more than once about the accuracy of her fortune telling, let alone where her "insight" came from.

Kaylin followed the group away from town, attempting to be somewhat stealthy. [roll1] (actually add 3, forgot my familiar bonus)When they finally stopped, she decided to make herself known, but since the whole group seemed to be investigating the shack nearby, simply walked up slowly, and said somewhere below normal speaking range: "Greetings."

"Hello, I am Thalo the Druid. Vallen a magus, and Niala our bard, and I have tracked a bloody boot heal to this shack. The sheriff has given us leeway to check things out. How can we be of service?

Thalo smiles at the cat, but gets the sense this is no normal animal.
