Random Banter! There's banter. It's random. Ta da!! *jazz hands*

Please leave your soul by the door, put up your feet, and enjoy a relaxing conversation with crazy people.

Rules and such:
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Do I really have to leave my soul at the door?
Would it be ok if I left someone else's soul by the door. I don't like the idea of me forgetting mine when I leave, and then not finding it again.

The leaving of souls was a precaution. If you don't have one, then you will most likely be immune to the effects that a Random Banter may cause1.

I'm designing a computer game. (God DAMN am I doing too much AT THE SAME TIME.) It's going to be a Civilization-inspired game about pushing the frontier with a lot more focus on survival than expansion and warfare. I'm not disclosing any details at this stage (not that there is much established at this early point, but still), but I'm aiming to keep up the joy of exploration that I feel in the start of the Civ games while battling what I find the most tedious with them, namely the way (over)expansion slows down the game toward the end.

I'm currently trying to write down all of my ideas and structure them in some way. I'm a lot better at analysing structures than writing them, mind you, so it's taking some time, but time isn't exactly a premium to me, so I'll let it take the time it takes. It's not like I possess the programming skills required to write the code yet. :smallwink:

Aye, I missed Flogging Molly this autumn, which really annoyed me, but luckily they swing by basically every year, so I'll catch them next time, mark my words.

Also slightly annoyed by not being able to buy Dropkick Murphys tickets until I know whether my play that night is going to be the first of the night, or not. If the play isn't first, than I'm not going to be able to make it, but if we ARE first, then I'll be able to zoom over there with a taxi in time.

Was like Apotheosis Clearinghouse. Though there's only a couple that I can still recall, and most of them are either Koorly wearing different masks or the Modgoddess of Pudding.

That's still kind of the case. Proclaiming ourselves to be deities is a common enough occurrence in RB even now. Curly's just special because she has been consistently proclaimed a Goddess by other people as well.

You know. I'm entirely sure any more.
I do know that it was because people couldn't get over how much I knew about literature/English/languages in general, and there was the common misconception that I was around twenty years old.
Five years ago.

There's some as say that in the bowels of SMBG, the Countess can still be found on moonless nights at the crossroads and turnabouts and roundabouts. A brave, foolish, or very cunning person may even be able to consult her for her wisdom.

She's a very lovely person. If I remember correctly she had a sort-of tiff going on with DD. Not like the feud or even the spat I have with Zar Peter, but it was something.
Or was it with caw?

Speak for yourself, I feel nerdy and it's an awesomely wonderful feeling.

And wow, lots of old timers. o.o soooo much nostalgia!!

And Mal! *pounce* haven't seen you around in ages. :O

I KNOW!
It's like we went back in time two years isn't it? Shame superglue doesn't work that well online really . . .

Even discounting people who've been banned, it's not properly the Old Crowd until we see Jibbers (He is the proverbial singing fat lady of Old Crowd returns).

Jibbers is as old as the Playground itself.

Edit @^: They stab each other. That's basically the extent of the thing, but it's gone on long enough to be a significant feud (But not the feud though, that's different).

How long's that thing been going on anyway? It was a well-known feud even when I was a wee little Curly.
I'd say though that the Stabby Thing between Archie and Hippie is more successful because Archie's actually stabbed Hippie twice. For mostly reals.

You know. I'm entirely sure any more.

Five years ago.
Oh Gods.
I'm coming up for my fifth birthday.
Anyway.
I think I was just generally proclaimed a Goddess and people ran with it. But Alarra was a Goddess long before I was.

Thank you! And don't worry, you're only as old a you feel. I'm ALMOST 20 MYSELF, so I do feel kinda old myself some times.

I was sixteen! I took an impromptu poll one time in RB about two or three years ago (I can't remember exactly but it was after Coidzor had joined) and a couple people estimated my age to be mid-twenties to . . .I think the oldest was twenty-nine.
To sum up:
I look about fifteen, but with minor effort can look younger still; my mental (including emotional, intellectual, psychological, social etc. aspects) seems to be mid-twenties, and in actuality I turn twenty-one in March.
Not bad really. Six year leeway either side of my actual age.
I was a bit more miffed when I was sixteen or seventeen and people were thinking I was between five and ten years older than I was.
Okay, I lie. Amused and oddly flattered more than anything.

Indeed I am in a band, and indeed we did just release an album, available for your listening or purchasing pleasure here (http://handshake.bandcamp.com/). However! Although Gwyn is mere months younger than me, he has nearly two thousand more posts to his name, and is far more active in this thread, as Eru so precisely noted. Unless I fail math forever; I'm fairly sure I scraped a C- in calculus but I'd have to check.

And checking anything that has to do with calculus is simply not something I am or ever have been willing to do. Which explains my use of the verb "scrape".

(Apologies for the shakycam video. For those who can't be bothered to watch it or don't read Schlock Mercenary, a chupaqueso is a concoction of melted cheese+fillings served inside a shell of other cheese fried into a crispy cheese-tortilla-pancake-thingy.)

NoScript! is a highly useful addon for Firefox. I would strongly recommend you keep it after it's no longer needed for this. By default, it will block every script as you load a page (you can set it to the reverse behaviour, to only block what you specifically block), you can then selectively allow webpages to run scripts (or even which scripts they can run). It protects you from a lot of malicious websites and other annoying scripts.

That said, you can disable NoScript! entirely or simply uninstall it when finished.

Yeah, that was the same at Newcastle, and I've never understood it. "Here, you can practice on these old exams! But we won't tell you how well you did on them."
The onyl case where it kind of potentially made sense was when one of the questions on my exam was exactly the same as one in a past paper I'd done the day before. But that's really just lazy question-writing.

This is my take on it as well - the exam you'll be getting is probably comprised of recycled questions from previous exams.

Well, kind of, yes. But usually they'd change the numbers. So you still have to work out the answers rather than just copying them down. And since the lecturers would go through similar questions in revision lectures anyway, teaching us the relevant methods...

Let's see, Curly was the Goddess of the Written Word, Alarra was the Goddess of Pudding... OH MAN I USED TO KNOW ALL OF THIS.

Um, I'm remembering something vaguely about Misspelling? No, that was her username, not her goddess-ness...
Amiria was the mistress of 'mispeling' if I recall correctly.

The original gitp pantheon was myself as the goddess of pudding (technically it was joy, merriment, cheesecake and pudding, but the pudding is all that stuck, which makes sense sticky stuff that pudding is), Nim, goddess of chocolate, Scorpina, goddess of sock puppets and action figures, And...gah...why can't I remember anything else?! Gorbash Kazdar was god of something... and there were a couple other gods, of course none of them are board members anymore, which makes sense since this was in 2004.

Course there's only Scorpina and I anymore (is she still here? I haven't seen her in awhile) so we allowed some of these new upstarts (Cassie and her pies, Curly and books) to join in our dietyness. :smalltongue:

and ahhh, i remember the fued...*misses El J* He ought come back again. Though I ought point out that while less well-known and more confined, my 'feud' of sorts started earlier and has been going on much longer. *stabbities caw*

Well, all that I can say that's constructive as to your purpose is to not listen to in-game radio and either make a quick playlist using your computer or mp3 player or do a search for a youtube playlist.

Or is this song playing in some other context other than the radio stations that the pipboy picks up?

Yha, it's coming from the Pipboy. I could totally listen to other stuff, and once I do finally get fed up by Mr New Vegas and his five songs, I'll do that.

At any rate, New Vegas is kinda fun. Still, of the two othr games I bought with it, it was the least good of the bunch. New Super Mario Bros Wii and Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes are much more fun.

While I'd usually be delighted at this, if your workload this term is anything like your workload last term, you might want to reconsider.

Heh. :smallamused:

There's a rather widely used plagiarism detection tool here in Sweden going by the name Urkund. Basically, students mail in their papers to a special Urkund account and they're checked against a rather extensive database which also includes every paper mailed into the system. One of my lecturers last autumn told us a story of a daughter of a teacher who saw that her mother had forgotten to log out from Urkund, and decided to test if her paper got caught for plagiarism. It didn't, so she handed it in. Her teacher also utilised Urkund for plagiarism detection. I think you can figure out the outcome of that yourself. :smallamused:

On the positive side for the girl, however, 100% plagiarism is such a rare occurrence that there has to be a story behind it. Especially when your name gets marked as plagiarism as well. :smallwink:

I feel the need to go join a WW game now. Or Mafia. Or Vampire. So many memories. Anyone else remember Pirates III? God that was epic, and I was only reading it.
Damn I'm old.

 You're welcome.

Honestly, I've tried hopping into a few games, but it always turns out exactly the same. Either you're in the trusted circle that has been scried or you're not.
Nothing you can say or do will put you into that circle if you haven't been scried, and nothing you can say or do will even be entertained unless you're in that circle.
So they all seem to be boring Follow the Proxy snooze fests these days. I've tried a few, and I just can't handle it.

I have been okay. After a very familially difficult autumn (academically easy, which saved my bacon, metaphorically speaking, since I'm a vegetarian :smallwink:) I have just returned to my last semester in school which will hopefully be less trauma and more work. I'm writing a 100-page thesis on the Welsh March 1150-1250, keeping on with Latin, taking two researchful seminars, and working as head curator at a history museum.

So it's 100% for sure on the "more work" part. I leave for Latin class in twenty minutes. My first thesis chapter is due tomorrow and I'm meeting with my adviser to discuss last semester, when I did most of the thesis research. Work work work work all the time. :smallwink:

Oh man! Death and puns! This really does feel like half a decade ago. I don't think I can compete in punnery when Death's around. I still remember a gloriously long pun of Death's (I think perhaps a good 500 words) which ended with "I'm a simple hobo. I've been through many hardships in my life." Thank you for that pun, it's one I use frequently to the groans of others. (Which really is the only point in puns, one's own amusement.)

I have some wicket ribbing set up for their latest performance and I've been going batty not having an outlet. I've already bowled over the only indian at work. I decided I would stroll on in and try to partake in some random banter as well. But honestly, I'm a little intimidated by this gathering of sages :smalleek:. Please don't steal my soul!

We've got some amazing screen names here

Funny, I was just cogitating on the unfortunate screenname I chose for myself as an impressionable fifteen-year-old. :smalltongue: It's not exactly memorable but on the other hand, it certainly could have been worse...it could have had numbers in it...

(No offense to anyone with numbers in their screenname.)

I know where I'm gonna send my demo record to when it's done now. The banjo and mandolin player has played on it and now all we're waiting on is the fiddler, who'll be playing his parts on February the 3rd. Show's the 18th. Man, it's all out of sight. I'm beginning to realize I could really do this.

... A llama told me to come here. I'm not entirely sure why. I'm very confused and wanting to return to blowing up dragon gods. So, hi everybody. :smalleek:

Like me? I'm an old-timer.
And I was told by another old-timer, a personage of questionable odor, to come in and bring Nostalgia back. :smallwink:

De! Why in the bloody hell are you awake right now? Shouldn't you be resting and absorbing the spectacular awesome of being a kept woman (so that you can stay up late and come raiding with us)?
