I'm in italy and I'm copying videos (.avi) on dvds. on an italian computer of course.
can those dvds be read in australia on an australian laptop?

The .avi format is the .avi format no matter where you are. It would be a problem if you were doing region encoding on your DVDs, but I see no reason why you would. It should be fine.
