The fundraiser brought in $29 a minute, averaged out over the course of the 30 days.

Anyone else who was watching the last hour saw that it was bringing in several hundred, sometimes a thousand, dollars a minute. Amazing.

Well that new $4000 pledge explains what I was wondering about. I had 3 tabs refreshing to keep track of the total, all three came up with almost $5000 difference at 6 minutes to go. I am saving the screenshots but I can't remember how to access the site I use to load images right now. Sad we still missed out on that last goal, but happy that we made it this far. #2 spot on Kickstarter till Double-Fine ends, only the third project ever to break $1,000,000. The highest non-tech project by an unheard of amount. O-Chul should be proud.

Well I expect zero sympathy, but....

...after several days offline organising a wargaming event, I logged on to make a modest pledge, only for the kick starter site to freeze, and 10 minutes later say I am too late (by 5 minutes).

I guess I won't be the only last minute person to have missed out.

So I guess the questions are:
(1) Can late comers such as I, add to the pledge ?
(2) If not, can we/will we, be able to pay through the nose for the extras ?

In desperate hope...

I've lurked on here for a long time, posting very infrequently - in fact I've doubled my postcount simply by asking questions in this thread.

And I just want to say, Giant

Thank You.

Thank you for every time I've come home to find a new comic to cheer me up. Thank you for all those enjoyable hours I've spent reading the archives instead of doing work. Thank you for every silly moment, every fantastic joke, every bit of clever wordplay, every pun that made me cringe.

Thank you for every bit of deadpan snark from Roy, every bit of unadulterated greed from Haley, every bit of boundless optimism from Elan, every bit of magical arrogance from Vaarsuvius, every bit of dour Dwarfishness from Durkon, every bit of amusing psychopathy from Belkar and every bit of incredible, mad, hilarious evil from Xykon.

And thank you for those rare moments when the group gets over their collective squabbles, or a character gets over their personal issues, and they prove that, despite the character flaws, the difficulties with alignment and their utter unsuitability for the job, the Order is a group of true heroes. Thank you for those awesome moments.

Thank you for every minute of time you have put into this labour of love of yours. Many times I have asked myself how one manages to do what you do, and I have never come up with a satisfactory answer. I simply can't understand how you do it - but I don't mind, because I know you will still do it, and in a few days I'll have another strip to read, and laugh at, and be amazed by.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Giant, if you're reading this, I just want to join the crowd and thank you for making such a wonderful, funny, and brilliantly written comic that we all enjoy and love. It was my absolute pleasure to contribute to the fundraiser. Incidentally, it is also why I finally decided the join the forum.

Also, thank you for being a kind and merciful Giant god and rewriting reality so that final line on the chart was always there at 1 million, 250 grand.

Because if we had never gotten to know what Mystery Prize #9 was, I honestly think it would've driven me mad.

He said over on the Kickstarter page that:

Confirmed, there were at least 4 seperate "final" totals
$1,253,509 (that appeared as soon as the time was up, and Rich used for the first chart)
$1,253,757 (that I captured but can't post without a host site)
$1,253,841 (that Crisis21 posted)
$1,254,120 (current total that has stayed steady for over an hour now)

I hope one of the updates tells us exactly how many books Rich had to print to give us all of our stuff and still have some left for the stores.

It is not exactly that, but let's go with what is on the final chart:

Second most funds pledged to a completed Kickstarter drive ever.
The third Kickstarter project in history to reach one million dollars in pledges.
The most funded creative work in Kickstarter history in any medium, ever.
The most funded project by a single person (rather than a company), ever.
2127% funded from my initial goal of $57,750.
35 goals reached
28 updates made (including this one)
63 increasingly-byzantine reward packages
14,952 backers
Over 25,000 books sold
Over 16,000 comments made
Uncounted broken F5 keys
And I think we kinda broke a Kickstarter server at the end there

Have to say that this pledge drive brought out the inner fanboy in me.
I mean I liked the series enough to have bought the books, but I never thought I would end up signing up for new credit cards, cursing when missing the goodies by a second or two, and the final cycle of refreshing and counting the last minutes.

If Rich had actually expected this, and planned it the way he plans his stories, we'd definitely have got to No1.

Congratulations Rich (Well named) on the one and a quarter million. Now I think you better make a few calls to other artists; I forsee another bout of Sprained Wrist Theatre after all that signing :D

Does this mean Wikipedia can no longer delete the Order of the Stick (webcomic) page for "not being notable enough"? :smallwink:

My print only special went through. Now I just have to wait for the survey.

You know what was a missed opportunity for publicity? There was an article in the business section of the New York Times on Kickstarter. Two or three days after this project went up, too early for anybody in the media to really take notice.

I SERIOUSLY can NOT believe that some people (thankfully only a couple so far) are griping that Rich is giving us the last Mystery Prize anyway. :smallannoyed: :smallannoyed: :smallannoyed:

I, mean, really now. :smallannoyed:

I've already said my peace over on the comment thread on this about why Rich letting us get it despite coming up "" short is reflects very highly on him, so I won't repeat it here (unless I have to :smalltongue:).

I'm just gonna vent and shake my head at the priorities of some people in the corner over here. :smallwink:

The fact that we came within 6k of the 1,260,000, the goal we'd supposedly miss by a mile is what shocks me. Another hour and I don't doubt we would have reached it.

The surplus income/willingness to part with non-surplus income of the Playground is astounding.

I nearly made the same mistake. Not having much cash at the moment, I had to choose.

(I chose the patch)

----

About the whole re-jigging the Mystery Prize #9: the rate that money was rolling in at the end, that line would have been crossed in another half an hour (or less, probably). I know it doesn't equate exactly but I'm firmly of the belief that if the drive had been extended another day it would certainly have been attained (but I don't think you can extend pledge periods)

I mean, the logical alternative would have been to stage a "finishing off" drive based on the massive popularity at close. Donations hadn't slowed down. $6k would have gone by first thing the morning it was posted up, and we'd be back to rescaling graphs in no time.

But why would Rich do that? He's got what he wanted; he's got more than what he wanted. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that he has more than he knows exactly what to do with right now, and is hanging on to it in case something comes up. He's invented rewards many times over because we just kept pushing. By the end, the pledge drive was more for us than for him. I know that I felt I was getting more out of it than I expect Rich was with another $1000 he doesn't know how to invest in OotS yet.

So he's made a very nice gesture, and given yet more to us. He didn't have to, but we didn't (as fans) have to go the extra mile either and get to over 2000% of what he required. And if you're worrying about those who gave only because they were worried that we wouldn't reach the prize total, riddle me this: they gave so that they would get to see the prize. They got the prize. Who exactly has lost?

What's wrong with us all being winners?

So Amazon didn't take my Visa. Now I got to find someone with a credit card. I am not sure I actually know anyone with a credit card. I've always considered a credit card "that card I use to pay directly from my bank account", apparently that is a debit card...

What is the idea of a card where you borrow the money from a third party and then pay it back?

Hmm... but I thought I had ordered from amazon before, I had an account... got check that.

MC: Your Kickstarter page (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/599092525/the-order-of-the-stick-reprint-drive) says the $1.2-mill will allow you to publish more copies of “OoTS,” and that you’re weighing other ways to spend the money. Can you shed some more light on what you’re thinking now about your spending — post-taxes — and was it challenging to keep gearing up the donor rewards?

RB: I really haven’t had time to think beyond what I wrote then, though I think the new computer is near the top of the list. Mine keeps crashing during important stuff.

Since he's an Mac user, think we can convince Rich to slurge a little and go for one of these bad boys, all tricked out (http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/mac_pro)?

I mean, after all, it's still a business expense. :smalltongue:

Er, no, the patches had to be added extra, for $4/piece. The only difference was which packages the patches could be added to.

Anyway. Now we have to be patient while Rich sorts out who gets what where when, and has to draw the PDF stories. Please be patient, people.

I have a feeling the "Final Prize" will be hand-waved with an "Eh, close enough."

No idea what it is, but if it is close, it will be done.

One "Bonus" prize I'd like to see is all the Giantitp Avatars being part of the Four Seasons of Stick Figure Minis. The Giant already has the files, use a mirror image of the image, set the color to gray, and you have a mini! 90% of the work has already been done by the Giant years ago.

Called it!

Wow. We hit the final minutes hard enough that my internet was completely wrecked. I couldn't even touch my email.

I think we were pretty far reaching with our damage.

Go us! We have the power to completely destroy the internet. No wonder our forum needs hardware upgrades.

... I don't think that's how that works. You probably just had a local network hiccup.

So awesome how well this thing ended. Got a laugh out of the remark about destroying F5 keys everywhere. :D

I put in $658.26 myself to get the ornaments, every book, the game with expansion, the sticky cards, and the patch, on top of all the other free stuff coming with this. Plus 6% tax since I'm in PA.

No idea how long it'll take to come in, but it'll be awesome once it does. :D

There's an element of joking to it. Mostly, I'm taken with the timing and willing to attribute more to our powers over the internet because it makes our legend even greater.

I'm willing to sacrifice reality for the sake of awesome, in other words.

By the way, pledges #2 and #3 went through just fine, albeit very belated. Whew.
(I wanted to report back earlier, but now that the Kickstarter is over, I have time to watch other things than the numbers. I got distracted by Green Mile on TV :smalltongue:)

And now begins the waiting. Let's see: #2 and #3 are slated for April, but both of them have the Sticky Shticks mini-expansion (one for a friend), so they might take until May (or June, I guess, but I think it'll be May). #1 is a Patience pledge, so I'll expect it as a Christmas present from my awesome (and broke) past self.
Ooh, that'll be tough. But the digital rewards will be well distributed during the wait for the parcels to arrive, I guess, so I'll manage :smallcool:

My thanks to:

Rich Burlew, for your amazing vision that has allowed us to see into your world of imagination for these brief glimpses. For your hard work in drawing these comics for the last 9 years. (and don't pay any attention to the whiners that claim what you do is just stick figures, any real artist will say the hardest part is getting the idea from your head out into the world) The method you use is wonderful and we here on these forums appreciate every bit of it.

The Mods, current and former, for keeping these forums running and stopping trolls/spammers/flamethrowers and just plain jerks from ruining it for the rest of us. And WampaX, thanks for your recent postings in this thread, been wonderful to read.

Everyone who has participated in this KickStarter, from the people who could only donate a dollar all the way up to whoever grabbed the cameo for $5000 (lucky dog):smalltongue: You have provided as much entertainment watching the lines go up as the comic itself.

Everyone who has been posting here on this thread, (which will probably be shut down soon for exceeding size limits by an ungodly factor) Again reading all the comments has been a riot.

Every fan of OotS past and present, for supporting The Giant in this for so long so he never gave up. I think I first heard about OotS back in 2004 but never started to read it myself until 2006, and did not really start to get into it until late in 2007. If not for you guys this would have simply been one more webcomic where I saw that (gee, no updates in months/years, I'll skip this one).

Ookoodook for bringing us the wonderful (dead tree) versions of this.

And I guess KickStarter can get some thanks as well for allowing Rich to find the means to (reprint one book) yeah right!:smallwink:

Last of all, anyone I missed give yourselves a pat on the back cause I'm going to sleep in the hope that by the time I wake up in the morning my other account will have the money taken out.

I feel like doing a happy dance through the house that it worked out for almost everyone, and I'm sure any problems will be resolved or worked around  if there's ever the need to do another OotS Kickstarter, I guess our positive experiences might convince even more people to participate. From the Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArQXJtruni7EdFZTRFY4V1kyZHJtTFF4MElKQ1ptR 2c#gid=0)
Pledged on Final "Day" (9am-9am period): $182,288.00

NOT A TYPO! :smalleek: :smalleek: :smalleek: :smalleek:

Go Us!

o_O

The mind boggles, truly... that's as much as the first 5 days, right?

So another side analysis: assuming everything from $850,000 onwards is surplus to requirements, that leaves Rich with $400,000. Subtract 15% for misc transaction costs (kickstarter, amazon, sales taxes), that's still $340,000. Let's say half of that will be used to cover the costs of the rewards for that final $400,000, Rich gets somewhere in the neighbourhood of $170,000.

At 30% tax that leaves around $120,000 in income for Rich from this drive, above and beyond everything else getting produced.

Now: anyone around here know yacht prices? after all this stuff is sorted, I hope he takes a very long holiday to enjoy himself for once!

I followed the Kickstarter from day one and got dragged in more and more the higher the line went. It was good to be part of this!

Thanks for the Kickstarter and for the comic which has been on my morning list of sites to visit for a long time (should really get my old emails from around 2003-2004 to see when a friend pointed me to the comic).

Money is taken out of the account and I am happily waiting for the goodies to come in their own time.

iirc the earliest expected delivery time on the pledges was April... so probably not until then. A month at least - for the amount of goodies we're getting, that's hardly anything!

At the end of the campaign, Burlew received pledges from 14,952 people. That’s a larger circulation than many DC or Marvel comics. He’s sold over 25,000 books reprinting his webcomic as part of the pledge packages. He plans to print at least 14,000 more books to replenish his inventory, the original goal of the project. That’s not counting the stickers, patches or coloring books thrown in as the overall total grew.

Woot, friend came through. Stupid pre-paid credit card was charging me 2.5% service charge to my pledge because I'm in Canada and kickstarters is in the US. So even though our dollar is higher today it still put my pledge $0.77 over the limit of the card.

She lent me her credit card and I gave her the pre-paid one. I was so excited I didn't even notice agreeing to babysit her sick son in his terrible twos for the whole day...But hey Getting my OOtS swag so it's all good.

Sorry I'm so late to the party guys! I had Forklift training to go through, otherwise I'd have probably camped out all day and finally broke and used my credit card for a Stick it to ME pledge (I DIDN'T BREAK MOONCAT, YOU HEAR ME?! :smalltongue:) That said, the final response has blown me away, the drive has blown me away, heck you guys in the forum blow me away (WamapX, Porthos, Mooncat, and so many others). I'm so proud to have participated in this Drive, from when I was merely lurking and reading the updates on Day 1, to when I finally convinced myself to pledge and become a full time backer. I feel like I got to participate in the Super Bowl, an Orchestra, and a New Years Eve party all in one. Such an amazing, warm, fuzzy feeling...

Ah, heck, I love you guys. Every last one of you, yeah even the Kobold Bard strumming the lute in the corner! God bless all of you beautiful, wonderful, amazingly crazy people (you too, Rich!) I pray that I get to see and interact with all of you in the future, because I don't think I can ignore this community now that I've become a part of it.
