Well I just DM'd a game of Osric.

In which a single first level Half-orc assassin managed to

Pickpocketed a 3-rd level assassin of his weapon.
Killed said third level assassin while weaponless.
Fought off his three fighter companions with nought but a battle-axe.
Only almost died.
And then went on to assassinate one of the gang-leaders with a crossbow bolt to the forehead. (A third level fighter by the way.)
Before finally taking refuge in the wilds outside of town, as she was down to one hitpoint.

All due to some very lucky rolls.

Yeah I was a bit surprised by the assassination bit because she was already wounded.

I figured she'd end up dead but she had a horse. And I think a certain amount of, ".... What?" Time, is enough to mount up and get out of there. She was chased... but none of them have bows, or really anything they can throw.

Still she missed out on the guys loot as she had to run from his 8 lackeys.

Ah, adventure, excitement, a player craves exactly these things.
