PS3 controller problems

So my girlfriend's son is having another issue with his ps3. He keeps losing the connection with the controller and the ps3. It has happened to me 2 or 3 times since I've owned my ps3 , but seems to happen to him several times a day. I thought maybe too much wireless stuff interfering. The problem is I have a router and a phone and often cell phone, closer to my ps3 than they do.

So any other ideas what it might be?

How far away is the controller from the PS3 during his normal usage?
If you suspect it's interference, it could be that you normally sit close enough that the controller signal is still strong enough to get through.

The next thing to check would be the battery, but I'm not sure how to do that on Dual Shock 2 controller.
