~ The Village of Ameura ~

MAP OF AMEURA
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3778/ameura.png

A cold and desolate settlement on the outskirts of the frozen north. Ameura heralds as the last remnants of human civilization before the wilds of the Frostfell Region. With a population of only several hundred, the remote town caters primarily to the miners and hunters that work in the surrounding mountains. In the foreboding mountains nearby, the Ameuran hunters capture wild beasts for food and trade to the warmer cities of the south, while the miners work hard in the dangerous caves to mine for rare metal.

For its part, Amerua is encircled with a formidable stone wall, protecting the village and it's people from the dangers of the north. The village is divided into three districts, each separated by an open metal gate. The first and largest, lies to the south and consists of residential homes, and a small bazaar reserved for mining trade. It is here, where the majority of the village live, in relatively quiet lives, despite the hardships outside. The people of this district are simply the hard working, weather beaten men and women who try to make their home in the last outreach of civilization. The second district is more sparse and is home to the marketplace, and the guard's barracks. The Frost Hearth Inn is also located at the edge of this district, bordering the eastern gate. To the north above that, lies the third district, and the smallest. This district's gate is of a much stronger metal, and does not remain open as often. Though touching upon the northern wastes above, it is here where wealthy adventurers and politicians make their home. It is a district where many escape to, bringing politics and schemes with them, as it is here that lies the farthest reach from the law of the Empire to the south.

One of the larger Houses in the Secorre District, is the Devian House. Founded by Curtin Winthrop Devian the Fourth, Esquire, it is a stately manor, with extensive gardens and even a private menagerie. It is no secret that while Curtin Devian holds the greatest wealth in the village, he is by no means a popular man. The history behind his wealth is shrouded in mystery, and he seldom leaves his grounds. The most reclusive of the so called 'Ameuran Elite', Devian has also been the center of several hushed rumors around the village, concerning disappearances of several young woman from Ameura. Though, he was found innocent of any wrong doing, this was around the same time that the guards had received a new watchtower, and many suspected foul play.

It is in this house however, that there now seems to be some sort of distress. For why else, would the reserved Curtin Devian seek help from strangers?

~ The Frost Hearth Tavern ~

As with many tales, this one begins in the safety and warm glow of tavern lights. The mood has become tranquil, as the frequent patrons settle down to the music that overwhelms the tavern during its twilight hours. Many of the faces in the inn remain fixed on the small stage ahead, which bears a beautiful, lone female elf. Her eyes closed, a single melody emanating from her lips. Slow and deep, the exotic song brings a haunting calm to the tavern. The bartender at the front, finishes wiping the last of her glasses clean and sets it aside with the others. Those staying in the rooms upstairs have all retired for the evening, and through the stained windows, the last rays of the setting sun pass by, illuminating the snow covered hills nearby. The mood of the tavern remains warm, yet subtle, in contrast to the frigid environment surrounding it.

You are all unknown to each other. You are neither the frequent patrons, nor the villagers in which the tavern is nestled within. Simply by twist of fate, do you find yourselves somewhere within the Frost Hearth, whether for drink, for rest, or for atmosphere. You are by no means skilled adventurers, though you may have had a battle or two within your history. At the moment, you are simply resting in parts unknown, among the frigid landscape of Ameura.

The tavern door opens with a slow creak, letting in a chilly frost in the otherwise warm tavern. A curious few look to see the newcomer, but the elven singer seems unfazed and continues her mournful song. The tall man, donned in thick chain mail, looks around before turning to the tavern wall. A bulletin board at the back, often full of notices, rewards, and events, held too few announcements these days. This part of the world seemed to have quieted off, for the most part. This was enough to make the man's arrival all the more questionable, as he was a guard of the Empire, whose capital was in the south.

He unfurled a scroll from his belt and easily hammered the parchment into the bulletin. He did so with a bit more force than perhaps was needed. The singer continued without pause. Apparently done, the noise stopped and the man stepped back admiring his less than stellar handiwork. The paper was lopsided but the guard didn't seem to notice as he nodded to himself and left. The door shut loudly after him, once again offering the patrons a glimpse into the chilly weather outside. Behind the counter, the bartender shook her head and sighed, pouring a small ale for a customer who was at the bar.

If anyone was to get up and examine the parchment it would read:

Attention!

Devian House seeking unified group of warriors to reclaim victory for the
Village of Ameura. Report to the esteemed Curtin Devian of named House
upon the stroke of midnight on the eve of Nocturne 11th. All interested may apply. If selected, may be well compensated.

House of Curtin Winthrop Devian IV, Esq.

The calendar located next to the parchment declared that indeed today was the afore mentioned date, and what's more is midnight was only 5 hours away. Either the guard was severely lazy in this notice, or there was something else behind this. A general map outside on the outskirts of town, would place the Devian House in a very small district that catered to those with more cents than sense. Along with several other wealthy elites, they had created this small section of town, to cater to their lavish lifestyle, while simultaneously ignoring the plights of the common clay. A quiet applause begins as the elf finishes her haunting melody. The woman gives a slight bow, as she pauses and casts her to gaze over the audience before her. Slowly, the elven woman turns and silently walks off the stage, leaving the tavern in silence.

Percival had sat in the common room for a few hours now, sitting on several cushions so that he was at the proper elevation for the human-sized table, trying to make progress on his book. His wire-rimmed spectacles were perched on the tip of his nose as he stared down at his book, the tip of his quill tapping idly on the table as he takes in the atmosphere of this northern town.

The chill in the air was held at bay by the fire crackling in the hearth nearby, and by the mug of tea the barmaids graciously kept topped off for the old gnome. The haunting tune played by the elf up on stage washed over him.

He looked up in curiosity as the door opened and a man posted a notice on the board, leaving quickly thereafter. However, he would remain seated and sip at his tea, watching the reactions of the inn's other patrons.

Chiyeni of Anar

A young barbarian girl's eyes follow the elf out of the tavern, returning after a moment to her now-empty plate and mug. She scrapes a final half-empty spoonful of soup into her mouth, wipes her hands on her bulky fur outerwear, then rises and approaches the nearly bare bulletin board.

She pauses before the new posting, painstakingly reading it letter-by-letter, her brow furrowing in concentration and confusion as she slowly reaches the end.

However, where literacy was not her strongest suit, reticence was not either. She looks to the clientele nearby, and asks a question to anyone who will answer. "Reclaim victory? When was Ameura defeated?" After all, her tribe had traded here annually since before her own birth. "And is asking for visitors at midnight a tradition in the South?"

Devith Iceshard

Finally finishing his first ale of the night was certainly proving problematic for Devith, for the elf had never imbibed such a liquid before. Already the room was starting to prove awkwardly off-kilter, and the sudden intrusion of cold air was, while not uncomfortable, rather unbalancing when the world decided to go wonky. After the guard had taken his leave, Devith made his way over to the board to lean over and read the note, rather appreciative of the fact that the note itself was the only rightly-angled object in the whole darn tavern. Scratching his head thoughtfully, the elf straightens and heads back to his simple tavern-supper, talking to himself in low tones.

"This may prove fortuitous...when the world decides being askance is absurd again."

Murak had been sat in the Frost Hearth quiety drinking mug after mug of ale without it seemingly effecting him, though he once got up and headed out into the freezing night to check on his stabled animals, old Sourhoof his bad tempered but loyal pack mule and the reason he came to Ameura in the first place, the wild Branta that was captured and brought in by the village hunters a few days ago.

Checking that they were properly cared for Murak gave Sourhoof a quick rub down and an apple core, which earned him a brief affectionate nuzzle then a swift kick when his back was turned that made him smile "Hahaha you never change do you old friend" he says while rubbing his leg "and what about you my new friend?" he carefully asks the Branta whilst it shies away from his hand, putting a sad smile on Muraks face "Don't worry friend, i'll not treat you the way those hunters did" the sad smile is replaced by one of anger as he once again examines the marks the hunters left in a foolish and wasted attempt to train the proud beast.

After that he returns to the tavern, getting more than a few incredulous looks from other patrons since he went out barefoot and returned none the worse for it. After finding a new seat by the door Murak listens with a dreamlike wonder to the elfs song, a more beautiful sound than any he's heard before that brings tears of joy to his eyes. When she has finished he blinks away the tears to see that she has already gone, looking around he realises that people seem to be gathering around a plank of wood with scraps of parchment nailed to it, approaching it seems everyone is concerned with one scrap in particular "Hmm what is going on?" he asks.

The tavern doors swing open with a gust of snow and wintry air, revealing the small frame of an elf who looks as though he's just trekked across half the tundra to get there. Closing the doors behind him, Sky trudges up to the bar to enquire with the innkeeper if his usual room is available. The druid is clad in Elven whaleskin armor of the type worn by the ice-dwelling tribes, and with a recurve-bladed yataghan and a matching dagger sheathed behind his waist, and his face half-concealed behind a heavy cold-weather scarf, he manages to cultivate a threatening appearance despite his 5'3" of height. But that quickly dissipates as soon as he tugs down the scarf to greet the tall barbarian girl standing next to him with a cheerful smile. "Hi there," he beams to Chiyeni of Anar. "Were you saying something?"

The burly dwarf sat at a table near the door, his gear stowed in the seats next to him to dissuade anyone from sitting at his table, as he drank the bitter ale the Frost Hearth Tavern was known for. He was in the village trying to find some information on either Gunthrink or find a bit of work as his money pouch was a bit light.
<Information isn't cheap> he thought to himself <especially when it's bad>

He saw the tall, armored human enter and make his posting. From where he was sitting, he could make out House Devian.
<Pah, thieves and worse, they do be>
Think about his money situation, he gave himself a bit of a growl.
As long as they don't be asking me to do anything dishonest he mumbled, too low for anyone to hear over the singer.
Coming to stand next to the elf, he looks over at the huge human-thing.
<Hope he doesn't have fleas jumping off of him> he says about the Neanderthal.
It say House Devian be looking for warriors to reclaim victory for Village Ameura, whatever that do mean. he said to his question. Looking again at the size of the massive warrior, he continues I will be going. If you be too, great strength the can count on
With that, he went back to his table to finish his drink and gather his belongings.
If you as he points to the Neanderthal or any of you others be going there, I know the way and will be leaving shortly.

Hearing the younger folk starting with talk of adventure, Percival takes another sip of tea and removes his spectacles, storing them carefully in a small, carved wooden case lined with red velvet which he slips into one of the many pockets on his heavy violet robes. Corking his ink pot and closing his book, he stows his things and clears the table, hopping down off of his piled up cushions and carefully smoothing the wrinkles out of his clothing.

Satisfied with his appearance, the old gnome heads across the tavern, weaving between the tables, hands clasped behind his back as he moves.

"Talk of an excursion, is there?" he queries of the folk at the bar. "Mayhaps it will spawn new ideas in this old skull of mine, provide some inspiration and illumination, yes?"

He twirls idly at his mustache as he looks up at the taller folk, being a mere three and a half feet himself, although his tall hat extends nearly another foot above him.

Chiyeni smiles right back at the Elven newcomer. "Just reading this paper. It seems this town's headman is recruiting warriors at midnight, tonight. Sounds odd to me, but I am a bit curious." And staying up that late wasn't hard for her--she had often stayed up long past dark to watch the skies.

She looks back at the posting, pointing with her finger at single words until she finds the one she was thinking of. After a moment, she finds it. "It says 'unified group'.... that means 'just one', so we should go with these other folks to see what's happening." She smiles, proud of her misinterpretation, and not realizing in the moment that she'd as much as decided to go.

The sun had already set on the village of Ameura. At this late in the evening, there were few people out in the streets, as most were huddled in the safety of their homes, against the cold wind that passed overhead.

Across from the tavern lies the East Gate, fashioned into the stone wall surrounding the village. This was the closest exit to the frozen badlands that was home to many sinister and dark creatures. The guard tower could be seen to the south, but it's lanterns were dark. Perhaps, they had delayed in lighting them, this night. To the north, about half a mile, would be the iron wrought gate of the third district. Adorned with hanging gargoyles made of blue stone, and the only gate with a permanant security.

It seems a quieter night than most, but for your small group of travelers, you would have little comparison otherwise.

Towards the East Gate, a hulking figure seems to be pulling something into a shadowed alley. Towards the North, the streets remain practically empty, only a lone woman seems to be leaning against a building, off to the side. To the West, the door of the Tavern closes behind the last member, as you face the chilly night. And towards the South, the guard tower remains still dark, and a gentle reminder of how far from city law you are.

The time reads 7:24.

Welcome, to the Village of Ameura.

Chiyeni of Anar

The tribal girl walks with her newfound companions, not even sure of most of their names. The stillness and silence didn't trouble her, but the narrow, confining streets left her feeling disquieted. Her eyes leap to each hint of movement through the dark.

Eager to fill the air, she babbles a bit. "It didn't feel nearly this crowded this afternoon. I mean, there were more people, but now it's so small, and well--"

Seeing the motion in the alleyway, she cuts off abruptly and--confidence bouyed by her companions--takes several steps closer, not entirely sure what she sees.

Torches line the corners of the streets, each threatening to blow out, as another chill wind bites the bitter air. You would not envy those whose job it was to light the flames every night, as even now, a few have already gone out. From the entrance of the tavern, you can make out a hulking figure, about seven feet tall, shrouded completely in a thick grey cloak. He seems to be dragging a cart, but the cart looks lopsided and flat, with no handles. You can't quite judge the distance, but to the opposite side of the figure, you think you can make out open doors of some sort. A torch light in the distance flickers again, and goes out.

For those with Low-Light Vision or Darkvision.
Through the flicker of the nearby torches, you can see the cloak looks thinner than it should be for this weather, as it flaps in the wind. If you squint, you can barely make out movement behind the figure itself. You judge the distance between you and this scene to be not more than a brisk five minute walk, across the main road, and down several blocks, past a tannery. The tannery's doors lie halfway between the tavern and this figure, and are oddly wide open. A torchlight in the distance flickers again, and goes out.

The shadow figure looked up quickly, it's face and body still completely in darkness. In a lunging motion it seems to haul the entire cart-like object up and towards him, and in less than an instant they're both gone behind the farthest building down the lane. In the lead, Huval is the first to round the corner, his armor scraping against the edge of the building, as he turns towards the sounds.

What he sees however, is not what he may have expected.

And certainly not what was expecting him.

Frozen in mid-action, a group of five individuals are in various positions beside an open warehouse door. You immediately recognize the huge figure from before; now close enough, to recognize as a brutish neanderthal. Over his shoulder appears to be a dead body, in a stage of decomposition, the broken wheelbarrow overturned beside him. There are two human men, who appear to be thugs, beside the warehouse door. Both in a state of surprise, their hands already on the swords at their belts. From a distance, you can see slowly walking up a female elf, her crossbow already knocked, aimed towards the group as they round the corner. And finally beside the Neanderthal, another figure, completely hooded, stands beside wielding a somewhat dangerous looking dagger.

The assembly seems in a state of some surprise, obviously not expecting anyone to be out this late. The shrouded figure, beside the Neanderthal casually walks towards Huval, and speaks up slowly.

"Oye, Blimey! You lads 'ad best be turnin' around. There's nothin' ter see 'ere, round deese parts. Nuff said, yeah?"

He makes no sudden movements, but exhales deeply and focuses on the task. Somehow, he had let himself believe that this evening would be nothing more than an interesting diversion. He had forgotten the true grisliness of the business he was getting himself involved in.

She was already training the bow on Sky as he circled around them. Both groups seemed tense, especially as the group from the tavern were blocking the only alley entrance to this side of the warehouse. The other group would have to go through the warehouse to get back into Ameura proper.

Or go through the tavern group.

The cloaked figure at front, smiles a bit. Those in front, can see a brownish hue on his teeth, as if he chews tobacco. A rarity in these parts.

"Gawdon Bennet! Woah, woah there. That's none ov yaaahr concern, i' is. We don't wan' any trouble 'ere, an' neither do you. If yew wan' ter be a bleedin' 'eart, why don't yew go find a guard awer something, if yew fnk we're up ter something. OK?"

The man turned to the others and snickered about something, the two brawny men in back joining in a muted chuckle. The Neanderthal had already dropped the object that appeared to be a dead body on the pavement, and had suddenly brandished a massive greatsword. The men in back, were now wielding a sword in each hand, while in their other, the faintest trickle of what appeared to be arcane energy, spilled from their empty fingertips.

Turning back, the stranger tilted his hooded head and grinned.

The sound of metal hits the stone pavement as the neanderthal drops his greatsword, and turns towards the warehouse, speaking in a deep, guttural voice. "We in trouble." With his long strides, the hulking man passes the men easily and runs into the warehouse.

The female elf seems visibly shaken by the sudden movement and possibility of guards, and looks to the hooded figure for a response, but it's two late for the two men by the door, as both have already turned on their heels and ran into the deserted building.

"Blimey! No, yew idiots! Rattle an' Hum back!" It was too late, they had already gone. The man with the hood angrily threw it back, to reveal a relatively handsome gentleman. His appearance was definitely not one from the north. He had none of the hardened features that usually came with the frozen lands.

The female elf took a step back and towards the man, as she lowered the crossbow. The stranger however, deftly sheathed his dagger, and folded his arms, taking a step away from the dead body, now laying there in the cold ground. He gritted his teeth, and narrowed his eyes, waiting to talk his way out of any situation that may arose, as the sounds of the guards grew closer.

Warehouse
The warehouse is huge, from the looks of it. There are boxes practically everywhere, and a lingering smell of flesh. The boxes are clearly labelled in Common, with the names of various cuts of meat, including Branta Flanks and Auroch Thighs. The temperature is none too colder than the air outside, so the warehouse must be a temporary area for meat packing, before transportation, rather than a much chillier slaughterhouse, where meat would be actually cut and stored. A thin debris of sawdust still lines the floor however, fleckered white from the ravages of fallen snow in the previous weeks.

A general reconnaissance would notice nothing much out of the ordinary. A bit of good luck, and you would recognize the footprints of more than a few people taking long strides towards an exit in the rear. This door hangs ajar, and you can detect the faintest of movements if you strain your eyes. To the left of the entrance, is a door with what appears to be stairs leading down. It is propped open with a box. To the right, there are three doors, but all of them are closed.

There is a metal series of catwalks overhead, and various ladders on ground level to get to them. The only thing that seems to be on the upper level however is a windowed office above the three closed doors. From the ground level, you would not be able to see inside however.

The warehouse remains large, and empty. A ladder nearby leads up to the wooden catwalks above. Other than the office, there is not much more on the upper level. There are stacks of boxes everywhere, creating the appearance almost of a maze. A door to downstairs lies on the left hand side, dark.

Peering down from the entrance reveals nothing, but darkness. The temperature seems to get colder the further downstairs you go. Other than three doors to the right, closed at the far end, and a closed, solid door at the back, there is not much else. Sawdust and frost lines the floor.

The elf, remains quiet, though conscouis and slightly groggy. She winces a bit as she is tied to the unconscious stranger. Nearby the dead woman is left laying on the floor. There are no sounds, nothing except the quiet, dark warehouse.

Listen here little girls and boys
stop playing, stop jumping, put down your toys.
Here is a tale of vicious snow camels;
fail to heed my warning and taste the nine hells.

You think you know fright
when dragons fly at night.
You think you know fear
when goblin men draw near.
The real fear comes when you hear warning bells,
warning you to hide from the snow camels.

Dragons fly with their fiery breath,
goblins use sharp steel to bring swift death,
but neither is so vicious as the snow camel's spit.
It's slimy and smelly and makes you throw a fit.

Now you know, the warning is told.
It's been said many times but never gets old,
that the snow camel's wrath shall never be matched
even when the greatest dragon ever finally is hatched.

Across the catwalks, at the far end, there is what appears to be an office door. It is closed, but beside it, is a foreman's window, which overlooks the catwalks. How to approach the office seems a different matter however, as it seems one of the catwalks between your side and the office's side, is missing, with nothing but empty air between the two sides of the building.

If you were to approach the catwalk's edge, you would notice a locked box, cemented into the ground. The other edge of the catwalk is ten feet from you. You could probably make it if you jumped.

Percival examines the spellbook. It is an odd one, rather old, made of a sandy leather hide. Though the spells inside are encrypted, there aren't very many of them. Within the spellbook however, as a sort of bookmark, is a silver necklace with the symbol of a cork, inside of a moon.

I did say they were locked doors in the basement. I *really* hope everyone hasn't been waiting on me, for some re-explanation of this. I'll tell you what's inside of them regardless. Frozen meat. Not every door has treasures untold, especially in some random warehouse. The table is essentially a place where you place meat, to be prepared to flash freeze. In this magical setting, the table itself is doing the freezing. The shackles aren't actually part of the table, and are just resting beside the envelope.

"Well, less there than I expected," opines the girl quietly, secretly a bit unnerved by the thought of the non-animal butchery that must've gone on in the basement. "Shall we drop these two off with the guard? They don't seem inclined to tell us much more, and we've a few minutes before our next meeting." She isn't sure if that engagement is still at Devian's manor, or if they'll try to ambush 'D' here, but the statement would be true either way.

Chiyeni hefts the dead female over her shoulders. The dark bag, keeping her safe and out of the public eye. Murak and Huval attempt to handle the elf and stranger, but they seem overly resistant. Glaring, the would-be adventurers knock the two unconscious, and together manage to carry them slowly but surely after the others.

With Sky leading the way, and Percy and Devith bringing up the procession, it was an odd sight to see all six of them walking slowly through the cold night. There were even fewer people on the streets now, but the snow continued to fall. The lights in the guard tower remained dark, haunting. The only illumination from the street lanterns, and the distant glow from the tavern.

The group may find it odd to not be approached at all during their short expedition, only passing by an old woman mumbling to herself in the dark. Eventually the adventurers approach the steps of a massive temple courtyard. Bright lanterns hanging from every arch, and a massive statue of a handsome human, a beard on his rugged features. He wields a massive greatsword. A plaque below the state shows a symbol of a diamond with a snowflake inside of it and reads, 'Devoted Aengrist, protector of Ameura.'

The group pauses, humbled by the size of the statue before them. Beyond, the gates to the temple are open, and here and there a man or woman in a robe walks in and out, ignoring the cold of the night around them.

The temple courtyard was shaped like a horseshoe. In the middle lies the statue of Aengrist. On either side of the building are small closed doors, wooden in nature. The temple had slowly begun to get a bit more quiet, the general background murmuring in the distance silencing, as people came over to view the body.

"You...erm...you are not from Ameura are you.." the man seemed solemn as he looked over the assorted party. "No, it would seem not." Looking back at the body, the priest Drunthain, moved to the necklace around her neck, slowly withdrawing it. You could see that the girl was wearing the same diamond snowflake necklace that the cleric himself was; the symbol of Aengrist.

"That ring...yes...erm...I know of her. She is in training to be a cleric here, her name is Lanaie Greenhearth." The man pauses and sees whether her name brings up any recollection into the faces of the adventurers. "You all..you..erm...really aren't from here." Coughting politely, he continues in a morose voice. "She is the younger sister of Reisa Greenhearth, the erm..the current challenger for ...Ameuran mayorship.."

The cleric seems stone faced as he continued, to see if anyone recognizes her now. "Erm...this..this may have to wait until the morning. Perhaps...perhaps it is best, if you leave ...those two here with us, and we will guard them until the morning...if Lanaie was..erm...attacked randomly, than this would be a job for the guards...but..erm..if there was...." The cleric ends quietly for a moment.

One of the other higher clerics seemed to speak up and start getting all the gawkers to disperse. It didn't take very long, but in only a few minutes, the adventurers were left alone in the main chapel, with Drunthain, two other priests and the bodies. The chapel seems almost foreboding now.

"Well...erm...yes, I'm sorry. This doesn't seem to be quite your night, is it? But as adventurers, our church is grateful that you have shown diligence in returning this child to our flock." Motioning to the other priests, they move to cart the girl off to an area where her body will be preserved until it can be raised. "Those..erm..they are unconscious. Well, we have...a chapel, as long as they are tied up, we can...erm..perhaps place them in there for the being."

Drunthain coughs politely. Looking around a bit quietly, he continues with a darkened mood. "You..have done well by the town of Ameura this night, but I would say no more about this to anyone. If you see the priest at the front desk by the altar, he shall compensate your party for the good deed you have done tonight. The church thanks you." Sighing the cleric nods to you all, and reverently leaves the main floor.

If anyone ask the cleric questions as he leaves, he will refuse to go in any more detail. His solemn response will simply be "I am sorry. Thank you for returning this child to us, but there is simply nothing more you can do for this situation. Please. This is not of your concern."

After three attempts to garner information, the cleric would become visibly frustrated, and the collective disposition of the church will lower one level.

"I'm sorry ma'am. That information is classified, on a need to know basis. We can't just tell anyone what's going on around here, can we?" The guard stands up straight against the gate and crosses his arms.

The other remains quiet for a moment, before turning to his companion."Not that we could really tell them anything anyway, seeing as we don't know."

"Biggs! We're not supposed to tell them that! Who's in charge here, us or them!"

"...us?"

"Of course. So no more talking to the locals. We're under orders, remember. We don't want another repeat of that White Pearl incident."
Both guards look to each other and frown, before going quiet.

The two guards seem to have said their say and remain silent now, guarding the closed, metallic gate into the northern third district. Meanwhile, snow continues to fall around the town, slowly creeping its way through accumulation.

As the group walks towards the guards, he thinks tries to recall if he had ever heard of 'White Pearl'.

We have business with House Devian. Guards, have many come regarding the posting?

The guard nearby gives your group a quick glance over, before responding.

"Sorry Sir, like we told the others, until the investigation is complete, most of the guards are tied up in the northern district. We are to keep watch and make sure no one gets through. That group what just left, was also asking about the Devian House, and I reckon there are a few groups already inside the gate. But until we get the all clear from the Chief, nobody can see the district, not nobody, not no how."

"Well, another guard of course, or a watch detective from the guild, I suppose."

"Well of course, one of those can go on in! I meant someone other than them, obviously! Like civilians and adventurers and whatnot."

"Oh, well ok, alright then. Sorry folks, the gates may be closed for at least another hour at maximum."

All you might recognize about the White Pearl, is that it was once the fastest ice rigging ship in the Frostfell. Nothing could match it for sheer speed through the frozen waters. Rumor has it that it was lost to pirates years ago.

The small, violet-robed gnome steps forth from amongst his companions, straightening his spectacles and planting his staff firmly before speaking. He has a kindly expression on his face, and smiles amiably at the two guards.

"It's late, and we've already had a long night. We have an engagement which we must pass through these gates to get to, and do not wish to insult our host by being late. So, if you'd be so kind as to let us through, we would humbly be in your debt, fine sirs."

"So you say only those on offical watch business are to be let through good sirs?" Murak says striding over "Then perhaps you could give us directions to this guild you just mentioned?" he asks politly with a soft unthreatening smile.

Chiyeni of Anar

The girl falls silent, listening to the two make their ruse. Or is it a ruse? They are, she realizes after a moment, on an official mission from the priests. Perhaps they aren't deceiving the guards at all. She lets them continue--and relaxes. After all, another hour at worst wasn't that much of a wait.

Devith Iceshard

Tapping his foot impatiently, Devith crosses his arms and looks at the two guards condescendingly, though he remains silent. After all, guards just do what they're told, and one cannot fault another for doing their duty.

"Well..."

"Well, what?"

"These guys aren't like the other ones. They're not mean or anything. Maybe we should just let them go. The Devian House isn't even in the same direc-"

"Oh come on, do you want to be transferred again! I'm tired of moving from city to city, just because we end up encountering every random adventurer party in the world. Let's just follow orders this time."

"That certainly sounds like a plan, if I've ever heard one."

!!

A female guard approaches the gate, and motions for the two others to open it. She is tall, with auburn hair and deep northern skin. She glances over your assembled group, before turning and whispering into Bigg's ear. His face pales a bit, and he takes Wedge by the arm, and they both run off towards the darkened guard tower. I overheard you were heading to the Devian House then? I heard that he was in need of adventurers. I would find it suspicious, due to the recent investigation in the district, but sadly, I'm not paid enough to speculate on such things. At any rate, we have done as much as we can do, and the mayor has authorized the district to be opened again." As the female guard says this, she frowns slightly.

"Just a reminder to all assembled, that this district operates more quietly than others. The noblemen...pay more for increased security, so take care about causing too much attention up there."

And with that the guard looks you all over again and leaves back towards the guard tower. Inside the gates, the district is lit up, more brightly than the one you're in. Going straight will lead to one of the primary roads. To the right, House Devian, to the left, House Greenhearth.

The female guard frowns, and shakes her head. "I'm afraid that all open investigations fall under Secruity Code 0121, and are subject to media and civilian silence. This is to ensure that witnesses and identities remain secret until a full investigation can be conducted to determine the who, what, when and why of the crime at hand. To that end, I hope you will respect the orders of the guards within the district in relation to any outstanding queries."

'Tis my experience that guard do usually have looser lips.
He nods his head towards House Devian as he waits for Murak to finish.

Chiyeni of Anar

Chiyeni nods to the dwarf in acknowledgment, but replies in a bare whisper, too low for the guards or Sky to hear. "Perhaps true, but they've as much as said that it's a Greenhearth thing with their direction comment, haven't they?" She listens carefully for the guard's response, but continues musing. "Though if we go in the Greenhearth direction now, will it throw suspicion on us?" She has faith in the dwarf's (and Murak's) judgment, but her lack of comfort in civilized parts disconcerts her.

The same they probably all do think: not much, I imagine. Townsfolk seem to be content to let others dictate their fate and let corruption run free.
