FAQ

Q. Where did you get the idea to do this?

A. This started as a game (Guess which character had the most appearances, then second most, etc.), but once all characters with three or more appearances were guessed, someone had the idea of keeping a running total, just for curiosity's sake. Then someone thought it might belong here instead of silly games, so n11 moved the list here instead of there. When n11's thread got 'ported over to the new forum, the formatting changes made it difficult to read. Plus, n11 hasn't shown up for quite a few comics, so the list was falling hopelessly out of date. So I have reformatted the list for the new forums and updated it. n11 hasn't shown up in the new incarnation of the forums, so now I'm doing it. You can see the second iteration of the thread at Number of Character Appearances (Improved!), and the third iteration of the thread at Number of Character Appearances III. The first iteration of the thread was purged when the boards were purged in February 2009.

Q. Hey in comic 370...

A. Stop right there. Because we have lost all record of conversations of comic strips before strip 371, we cannot go back and determine if your concern has been addressed. Rather than try to rehash old arguments, we're imposing a "statute of limitations" on discussions involving strips 1 through 370. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Q. What counts as an appearance?

A. Any likeness of the character being visible (so Elan's appearance on Nale's blueprint counts, and Belkar's self-portrait in blood counts) and any dialog from a character, even if "off-panel" or invisible (so the strip where the party is in the invisibility sphere counts for each of the main characters). Also, when someone appears as someone else (for instance when Nale impersonates Elan), that counts as an appearance for both the character in disguise and the character being impersonated.

Q. What's with the stuff in red and blue?

A. Red means an appearance in bonus strips from the books (including the coloring books), the Kickstarter extras, and the strips published in Dragon Magazine. Each page of the book or magazine is treated as a separate strip. Blue means an appearance on multiple pages of a multi-page comic.

Thanks to Fawkes (aka Mechafox), Paladin Carver, Porthos, Flame of Anor, SPoD, Gift Jeraff, RMS Oceanic, and all the other members who helped to compile all those bonus appearances!

Q. If two characters have the same number of appearances, in what order do you list them?

A. Characters are listed first by the number of standard appearances (as indicated with black numbers), and then alphabetically.

Q. What happened to the death notices?

A. In prior iterations of this thread, we used superscripted letters to indicate who killed or dismissed certain characters. But we decided that it was really not part of this thread's mission to serve as a running obituary. If you are interested in that, may we suggest The Graveyard?

Q. Why haven't you listed the goblins/hobgoblins/zombies/ghouls/ghasts/Azure City guards?

A. A character only gets listed if it is recognizable as an individual or if it's a recurring distinct group (such as the flumphs or the demon roaches). The indistinct masses do not get listed.

Q. How did you choose the name for :mitd:?

A. Monster in the Darkness is a frequently used name. There are others, but there's nothing that has been definitively established as his name. Until we get a firm name or identity, we will continue to call him "Monster in the Darkness".

Q. What about the ?

A. If a character appears only once and is not named, then it doesn't get listed. Otherwise, the list would be completely unmanageable.

Q. Who is Ted?

A. The appearances of a goblin caster in #90, #93, #105, and #107 could be the same caster, given the limited context, and he could be given the same “Ted” first mentioned in #90, but the Giant has specified no such connection was ever intended. We're listing him anyway because we think it's clever. :smalltongue:

Q. Hey didn't you list Sabine's fiendish form as an alternate form? And wasn't this FAQ question previously about that?

A. Yes. Sabine used to be listed with her red-leathered adventurer form (the one she originally appeared in) as her "natural" form and her fiendish form as a magical alteration. But now she has appeared in her fiendish form more often than her leather-clad form, so I've switched it around. Her fiendish form is now her natural form and the red-leather clad adventurer is one of her alternate magical forms (along with the cop, geisha, schoolgirl, guardsman, and fortune-teller disguises she's assumed).

Q. Why is Banjo listed as a character? Banjo is an inanimate object!

A. Blasphemy!! Seriously, you're probably right. But we like Banjo.

Q. Why isn't O-Chul's first appearance listed in strip 290 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0290.html) (fourth frame)?

A. That is not O-Chul. That is "fellow medium-sized paladin".

Q. Why is Jirix' first appearance listed as strip 459 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0459.html)? That cleric's holy symbol looks different and strip 704 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0704.html) implies that when O-Chul killed him it was the first time he had died.

A. In commentary in Don't Split the Party, the Giant said he felt Jirix was the cleric in the tower.

Q. Why is Shlubbo Noname-zaki from strip 435 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0435.html) listed? That's not his real name.

A. Well, it could be his real name. Either way, it's funny.

Q. What does not count as an "Alternate Magical Forms"?

A. We don't treat views of characters through scrying spells or devices, or characters covered in auras due to spellcasting or having a spell cast upon them, or conditions with no obviously magical cues (such as paralysis) as alternate magical forms.

Q. Why doesn't paralysis (such as from [I]hold person) count as an alternate magical form?

A. We decided that since paralysis does not include any visual cues in the comic (other than absurd posturing), it should not be counted.

Q. What does not count as an "Other Interesting Alteration"?

A. We don't treat corpses, changes in age, or costuming as interesting alterations.

Q. How did you choose the name for :mitd:?

A. Monster in the Darkness is his most frequently used name. The cast page in War and XPs and the commentary in Don't Split the Party calls him "Monster in the Darkness". The cast page in Don't Split the Party call's him "Monster in the Dark". The cast page in No Cure for the Paladin Blues lists him as "Creature in the Darkness", and O-Chul call him "Monster-San". Until we get more firm information, we will call him "Monster in the Darkness".

Here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0828.html) Redcloak calls him the "monster in the dark." The only in-canon in-story use of the name that I can think of.

So is the Order of the Stick Coloring Book a bridge too far when it comes to character appearances?

Before anyone answers, I'll point out we included the non-canon SS&DT appearances when it was released in book form. And the OotS Coloring Book is technically a book. :smalltongue:

Personally I will have zero problems listing all of the appearances on this thread when I get it. :smallwink:

The people on the "Rend" float are the characters from the musical "Rent" with D&D equipment: Tom Collins, Roger Davis, Mimi Márquez, and Mark Cohen.

I would guess that the fifth character is Angel Dumott Schunard, but I don't know if she counts as "identifiable".

Edited to add: Perhaps I should guess Joanne Jefferson instead, the only character other than Tom Collins to have a solo during "525,600 Minutes". Maureen Johnson is the other likely fifth character. Summary: probably not identifiable.

Yeah, while I think we can pretty definitively give Girard a +1, since he's clearly the central figure in the family tree. Everyone else, I think, should go unmentioned unless we can clearly identify them. I don't think we need to add every nameless Draketooth under the lump title of "geneology figures."

Also, there's no need to retroactively give Girard a +1 for 841, since he already got credit for the statue.

He's the third from the right in the third row down. That's the rune that looks like a three-legged telephone pole. It is clearly visible under the "p" of Elan's "--help" in #841.

Would pictographs really be counted as appearances or are they symbols of the names? Would we have counted hieroglyphs or Chinese signs? I can't match the corpses in 842 with any of the corpses in 841, so the Draketooths are being deemed indistinct for now and not listed. Girard gets one for his appearance in the bottom of 842, but I can't specifically identify his pictograph in the shots from 841 or the top of 842, and it may be obscured by speech bubbles. But I can identify the Draketooth Progenitor Dragon, so he gets a retroactive second appearance and a +1. None of the other Draketooths in the genealogical charts get appearances because I can't specifically identify any of them.

Finaly, due to size limitations, Extras have to be moved back to the second post.

On a side note, this is Durkon's 300th appearance, and Blackwing has now equalled the MitD for appearances. Also, oddly, neither Mr. Scruffy nor Yukyuk made an appearance in this strip...

Regarding the family chart, I think we could unambiguously identify a few more Draketooths, such as Girard's Grandmother, Father, Uncle, Aunt, Brother and Sister. I wouldn't try to identify Girard's cousins, nephews, neices or children or grandchildren however, as it would just be a slew of #1, #2, #3 and so on.

I think that the genealogy diagram is meant to be actual pictures, and they only look like runes in the non-close-ups because we see so little detail. This is supported by the fact that the dragon's "rune", the largest one, still identifiably looks like a dragon.

I don't think that we should treat the patriarchal dragon any differently than anyone else on the diagram, and should instead just treat him as one of "Genealogy diagram figures". Yes, his position in the diagram is recognizable, but by that argument, you could call "fourth row, second-from-left genealogy figure" a recognizable character, and that way madness lies.

On the corpses, I'm torn. Precedent is pretty clear that we count recognizable extras from a large group, since we did so for the Sapphire Guard, and the Draketeeth look about as distinct as the Guard did. On the other hand, it's a big headache to keep track of them, and I don't really see the benefit of tracking Draketooth corpses separately, rather than a single listing for "Draketooth Corpses".

Sure they have. The corpse Durkon tried to raise is obviously the guy with a bug on his neck on the near side of the closest table to the door in #841, between left-leaning-ponytailed-guy and flat-on-her-face-long-haired-girl.

This, very much so. If we're counting the banner-squiggles that presumably represent a red dragon that is presumably the same red dragon as the Empress of Blood in her youth, then that is very definitely the same Draketooth that Durkon is seen trying to resurrect that appeared in #841.

Is this what you mean?

Draketooth male with messy hair - appears in 842 (panel 3) and then twice again in 844 and 845. And in the lunchime scene, I believe that's him on the left end of the closest table to the OotS. So 4 appearances, and a +1 for his extra appearance in the double comic.

Draketooth female with braided hair - appears in 842 (panel 12) then again in 845. Also seems to be the one in the lunchtime panel, closest table to the OotS, leaning against a bald man. 3 appearances.

Draketooth male in armour with greying hair - appears in 844 (panel 6) and in the lunchtime scene is at the same table as the above characters, lying down with a woman at his feet. 2 appearances.

'Ass humour' Draketooth male with spiky hair and cyan-blue shirt - appears in 845 panel 6, and (I think) this is him in the lunchtime scene, mid-left, facing away with half of his head off-panel. 2 appearances.

The two Draketooths in 842, panel 15 don't seem to appear in the lunchtime panel. Them and all the other Draketooths in the dining room have only appeared once.

Hi.

I have a complete transcript of the Online-Comics 0-848 (the collaborative german translation, but still: complete!). There are a few issues and incompletions (like sound-effects), but I'm working to iron them out.
Every speech bubble of a character is handled in a new line with "Charakter: ", as are small one-liners like the demonroaches' comments, so it is easy to filter for the string "Roy: ", which indicates that a new speech bubble begins.

My thoughts now were: Why not make a "Number of Charakter Speech-Bubbles" thread, so that people can compare the number of 2000+ lines of Roy/Elan/Haley with the 800 lines of Durkon, 700 lines of Redcloak, 600 lines of Xykon, 150 lines of Shojo, 16 lines of Yukyuk... you get the idea? The Polearm Merchant has more bubbles than Zz'dtri, by the way, so it is interesting to compare with the Number of Charakter Appearances.

Could this thing be included in this thread, maybe in the reserved post, or should I open a new thread for the matter?

I see two occurences of "Suggestible Enor" in the magical alterations, which seems about right; however there's no entry for "Confused Enor" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0721.html), which is about the same look.

Images of a character have been counted ever since Xykon's image (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0013.html) showed up in Elan's summoned exposition. And someone impersonating another character is an image of one character superimposed on another.

While I understand that the image of a character be counted in the calculations, I do not think Tarquin's impersonation of Thog should count based on the grounds that Thog has never looked like that. After all, this is the number of character APPEARANCES thread. When Nale impersonated Elan, he looked extremely similar (just different from the slightest hint of the goatee). The Xykon "brothers" :mitd: were also extremely similar in appearance. Tarquin looked nothing like any of Thog's appearances except matching in color. Therefore, it should not count.

I disagree. We count even abstract representations of a character as appearances of a character. We've counted it when characters appeared as nothing more than little dots in the background. Other characters accepted Tarquin as Thog and that's enough for me.

Cizak
2012-05-19, 08:36 AM
But the point still stands: Thog has never looked even rometely close to how Tarquin looks now. It's not an appearance for Thog if nothing close to Thog is in the comic. Just because Tarquin says he's Thog it doesn't mean Thog is in the comic. The little dots you speak of were still very clearly meant to represent the actual characters, but this guy in a purple armor does not look anything like Thog has ever done.

If we count everything people misconceive as appearances, why not count Roy as King of Nowhere, Roy as Ray, Blackwing as a Mexican Guy, Belkar as Belkon, Durkon as Catatonic Gay Dwarf, Xykon as Skulls in Pile Underneath Elan as Nale and Yokyok as Kobold Menace?

We don't. Tarquin used an illusion and acting skill to convince people he was Thog. That's commonly known as a "disguise". You didn't think he looked remotely like Thog, but Belkar, Roy, Haley, Durkon, and Elan did, at least for a few rounds. If we accept disguises -- and we do -- I'm not discounting a disguise that actually convinces characters simply because you think it was a bad disguise.

None of those involve people trying to appear as that other person. Mistaken identity alone is insufficient. It must be coupled with an attempt by the misperceived subject to appear as that person. (Also, most of those aren't actual independent characters.)

We'll worry about hypotheticals when they become actualities. As far as I can tell, we have two choices. Disguises don't count as the character being impersonated, or we continue to count disguises as the person being impersonated. Once we decide to only count the disguises that we as a community (in a manner to be determined... how?) think are sufficiently believable, the whole thread is in the crapper.

This standard would also apply to illusions. Does the prison illusion of Belkar count as an appearance for Belkar, even though it uses dialogue Belkar would never say? (We did count it, by the way.) What if the illusion were slightly less believable (yet still believed by the guards)? What if the illusory Belkar had a Hannibal Lecter like mask so you couldn't see his face, but was still Small size, and still used stilted dialogue Belkar wouldn't say?

Once we open this up to subjective interpretation, it's a nightmare.

The most important question for me is: do these disguise/illusion appearances count towards the main total of appearances? For example, Shojo is at 35+16+12. Does Belkar's disguise as Shojo in order to trick Thanh count towards that 35? If so, I think we may want to rethink this.

I have nothing against tallying the appearances of characters that aren't actually them, but I don't think we should lump them in with appearances that are actually them.

Yeah, I'm with Flame of Anor. I feel like it doesn't make much sense to consider characters to have 'appeared' when they aren't actually in the comic, even if somebody is pretending that they have. In-comic reality should be prioritized over in-comic pretense and art, IMO.

What about...

Xykon in Elan's summoned exposition (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0013.html)
Xykon as a statue (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0029.html)
Redcloak on a banner (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0512.html)

We count all of these representations of the character as a character appearance (and not just as an alteration), even though it's not the physical body of the character making an appearance. We always have, since well before I was the one doing the tracking.

And yes, we counted Belkar's poorly made disguise as Shojo (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3829319&postcount=836).

And for the record, even if we were to change the rule, I have no desire to go back through the last 800-something comics and separate out "actual" appearances from non-actual appearances. It's not going to happen.

Now we have the winning argument. If you want the 'correct' numbers, go through the 853 strips + extras yourself.

I'd actually be willing to go through every strip to track down every single "fake" appearance (with people pointing out anything I missed and any errors, natch). Though some questions for the people against counting representations:

-Do corpses and soulless undead count? For example, if Roy's corpse is in a strip but his spirit isn't, is that still an "actual" appearance?

-What about petrified characters? They're technically objects and not living creatures.

-Do illusions that double as recordings count? (Giant illusory head of Shojo and Girard's fake location illusion.)

-It wasn't clear as to whether Shojo actually appeared to Belkar or not. (I'm inclined to think that it was Belkar's subconscious projecting itself as Shojo.) Should that count as an actual appearance?

-What about hypothetical scenarios like the archfiends' alternate plan for V or imagined scenarios like when Elan imagines Tarquin adopting Roy?

We should have competing 'Number of Character Appearances' threads, with the winner being whomever gets the most votes and replies in a pre-determined period of time. The winner will then be able to post a long, vituperative rant in their opponent's thread about how stupid their method is and how only a character's physical appearance should count/how a visual representation of a person counts as that person being shown in-comic. And also the loser's spouse and/or first-born child.

Well, I'm fine with counting illusions, statues, images.

But in my opinion, every person should be counted once in a comic. With that rule it would be very easy to count out impersonations.

Still, the impersonations are rare.
So far, we had only three impersonations (one character posing as another) I can remember: Belkar as Shojo, Tarquin as Thog (4x) and Elan as Cliffport Prison Warden.
Anything else?

Alternate selfs and non-specific disguises are more common: Elan as Ogre, Blackwing as Mexican merchant, Celia as Darkblood Gloomgloom, V as lizard/dragon/badger...

Me? No.
I will maintain the Speech Bubbles thread and the german translation thread. That's totally enough. We certainly don't need 2 threads devoted to the exact same topic just with different rules. And as mentioned, the doubled counts of "character X impersonates charakter Y" are so rare, that you can count them using one hand.

Okay, I've decided not to try to parse out the various family members on the genealogical chart. Instead I'm just giving "Draketooth Genealogy" an appearance everytime the chart appears. The only exceptions, for now, are Girard and the Draketooth Progenitor Dragon. If we learn, for example, which pictograph represents Orrin, we'll amend the list accordingly.

I think that's Draketooth Comedian on the ground. He isn't a mummy.

This was probably discussed before, but I did not find it, so I'm asking. Why is Jirix's first appearence stated as in strip #459? Is there any reason why the hobgoblin cleric who was later killed by Miko should be him? His unholy symbol has a different color and Redcloak would have a hard time raising him from under the rubble from the falling castle.

As for the first character who gets 100th, I vote for Xykon+Redcloak in the same strip. They deserve the honor.

I believe we have Word of Giant that it was Jirix (in one of the books or something). Also, resurrection doesn't need the whole body to bring someone back; even a single fingerbone would do. :smallwink:

Also, on the Jirix thing, I've been thinking about and I think we were wrong. Jirix is not the cleric who was destroyed in the tower. In strip 704 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0704.html), Jirix gives a (as far as we know, truthful) speech about what happened to him after he was killed by O-Chul. The way he speaks strongly indicates this is the first time he died. He "realized" this was his eternal reward. He saw a guy he owed money to.

Now, he could have been embellishing, but why? It seems to me the cleric who Miko decapitated probably left behind no identifiable remains to resurrect. So Redcloak promoted Jirix to chief cleric, and then, after he sacrificed himsel fto O-Chul, to Prime Minister.

So Jirix's first appearance is Strip 480 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0480.html), and he loses two appearances attributed to that poor exploded hobgoblin cleric.
