I'm thinking of making a country. Let's call it "Tende" meaning "Ten Days". It takes Ten days to make it to the capital from the East, North, West and South, on paved roads on a horse.

Assuming the capital is in the center of the country, I'd say the north, west, east and south are all about 300 kilometers away (a caravan can move about 30 km a day on a decent road).

Assuming the place is perfectly round (probably not but anyway), you get a surface area of about 282600 square kilometers, which is somewhat larger than Great Britain.

The system you're using is going to have an affect on this as well.

Take Pathfinder for example:

Horses can travel 32 miles in a day, provided a pathway of some kind.
That's 320 miles in 10 days, so your country would be 640 miles across.
Assuming it's roughly the shape of a parallelogram (because squares are boring :smalltongue:), then you're looking at 409,600 square miles.

That's a little larger than Mauritania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauritania) and a little smaller than Bolivia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolivia).

I'm doing the same sort of area calculations for a world I'm building right now, and this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_outlying_territories_by_tota l_area)has been incredibly helpful when it comes to working out the size I'd like to use.
