View Full Version : How do I get wings?

Actually, I don't want them, a friend does, but he asked me and I didn't know. What ways are there to gain wings? Anything besides a race.

Oh, yeah, and before you sarcastic ****ers go to town on this, I mean wings in D&D.

buffeting wings, a draconic graft from races of the dragon, will give you a fly speed equal to your land speed for 100,000 gp

dragonborn & half-fey are templates that give you wings...
& being a lv17 favored soul gives you wings

Thanks for the insult, we obviously thought of that. This is exactly the same as someone spelling rogue rouge.

Dragonborn. There's a fiendish graft that also grants wings, but I don't have whatever book it's in.

Grafts, for one. I think many types of grafts offer wings, such as the buffetting wings draconic graft in races of the dragon. They are very pricey though.

If you have any type of dragonblood subtype, you can take the dragon wings feat at level 1. A human sorcerer can get it via draconic heritage, which will give them the dragonblood subtype and they can nab the wings.

A favored soul gets wings at 17th level

The Feathered Wings graft (Fiend Folio) gets you wings for 10k, at the meager cost of your alignment.

There are a few more item solutions in the "Lists of Necessary Magic Items" link in my signature.

That is a *much* more economical graft than the buffeting wings.

Level 5 druid? Geomancer? Dragon Disciple?

level 6 warlock with the fel flight invocation gives wings.

fire wings, a level 3 druid spell, gives the caster wings. options are limited with this route though.

Grafts seem like the best route now that I actually look at them. All they require is gold, and my friend's character should be able to get pleanty of gold if he tries hard enough. Thank you guys for your ideas.

Remember, there are several grafts that give wings, including:

Feathered Wings (Fiend Folio)
Membranous Wings (Fiend Folio)
Zelekhut Wings (Dragon Magazine 315) << These are my favorite
Buffeting Wings (Races of the Dragon)

Make a deal with a fragmented dark god. Caution: May cause insanity.

Raptoran and Dragonborn as racial choices work, being a Summoner (PF APG) and you can give them to yourself for two evolution points not going to your companion (1 at higher levels).

the rainbow servant prestige class gives you wings (rainbow colored)
red bull gives you wings too but you must somehow be able to loot the can

Raptoran is the cheapest method (price-wise), then Dragonborn, then spellcasting abilities, then Grafts, then Magic Items.

The most expensive method, by far, is to spend feats on it. Animal Devotion provides Overland Flight for 1 minute, 1/day (spending more feats or Turn Undead to get extra uses/day), and a Greater Dragonmark (or was it Siberys?) can give you Overland Flight 1/day at a respectable caster level. The latter method is a steep price to pay though. Having the Dragonblood Subtype and taking the Dragonic Wings feat (RotD) at 1st level also gets the job done, but you'd need a second feat at 6th level to get true flight.

Word to the wise: Don't spend your levels trying to obtain a class feature that gives flight unless said class can also obtain 9th level spells.

Edit: Forgot one: Shape Soulmeld can obtain the Airstep Sandals, giving you psuedo-Flight as early as 1st level. The Pegasus Cloak can also give Flight, but it takes a lot more effort to obtain the relevant Chakra Bind (which the Sandals don't need).

The Winged Creature template (SS) isn't bad, though I think it's a +2LA, which is rough for a template that does little more than give you wings. You could consider adding (or talking to the DM about adding) some monster feats associated with flight (fly-by attack, etc). What I like about it is that it's incredibly easy to get perfect flight maneuverability (you just need 17+ Dex, and it gives you +4 to Dex, anyway).

Would using 'alter self' to change into a winged race still count as 'not a race'?

You acquire the physical qualities of the new form while retaining your own mind. Physical qualities include natural size, mundane movement capabilities (such as burrowing, climbing, walking, swimming, and flight with wings, to a maximum speed of 120 feet for flying or 60 feet for nonflying movement), natural armor bonus, natural weapons (such as claws, bite, and so on), racial skill bonuses, racial bonus feats, and any gross physical qualities (presence or absence of wings, number of extremities, and so forth).

Normal Summoners can do it at 10 via Aspect class feature (as I mentioned above)

I just happened to read the Adamantine Wings spell (CM), which can very well last all day. It's not as optimized as some of the other posts, but it effectively turns you into Archangel. Which, if you've been reading the X-Force comics lately, is as optimized as you can get - in bad-assery.

For the really high levels, in the Book of Exalted Deeds there is the Ring of Solars for 150ft [average-good I think] flight.

Grafts as mentioned is the cheapest way without starting of with them or multiple castings of spells.

Warlocks and Dragonfire Adepts get a flight invocation at 6th level.

Mount up on a flight capable mount? [since no one mentioned this earlier]

Well for 50K GP you can get the Phoenix Cloak(MiC).

It grants a fly speed equal to your base land speed with perfect maneuverability.

There's a feat line in Races of the Dragon that grants wings and improvements too them.

Also, the Unseelie Fey Template form Dragon Compendium has a chance to grant wings.

I suppose it depends if your setting has a Buffalo Wild Wings or not.You can't stop sarcasm. You can only encourage it.

Eugh, buffalo wings. I love 'em, but we buy cheap food where I live and after the super bowl they've been all discounted, and I've eaten so many lately that I'm sick of them.
