Just wondering if there is any sort of a way to build a classic FF styled blue mage character, the closest class I can think of is a spellthief and thats well.... just not right.

Any ideas on how I could build this kind of character without it seeming to powerful and cheap?

I played a Blue Mage in eaaaarly 3.0. Don't have the workout and it was mostly an ask your dm class. Basically I could copy any enemy ability with in reason.

At first level I could use Filth Fever as a 0 level touch attack, for example.

My advice: Get a DM that will work with you on this or play a Spell Thief. (preferably a Trickster Spell Thief). There are too many abilities and variables to steal from monsters that have to be judged for equilalent spell level...

Not without homebrew (there is a pretty good Blue Mage homebrew I don't have on me. Basics is that it is a sorcerer with a unique mechanic for learning spells, though it's a lot different in practice)

Hellbreaker in Fiendish Codex II can eventually steal spell-likes and supernaturals, along with some other neat but not quite blue mage-ish abilities.

Check out the most recent Zinc Saucier competition. It's got a parody of Stephanie Meyer who's one of the most sophisticated "copy opponent's stuff" characters I've seen.

Gorfnab has been walking around with this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160606) in his signature for a while.

On the old 339 Wizard of the Coast boards there was an excellent Blue Mage homebrew. I wish I had a link for it but I think the thread got deleted. If you can find it though then it will d pretty much everything you want.

A bit late to this, but I also recently homebrewed a blue mage (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=228552). If anything it would give aother idea that you could use to combine into a homebrew for your situation.

Illithid Savant!

Or Erudite, in a psionics-heavy campaign.
Or Spells-to-Power Erudite, if you want to open that can of worms.

Alternatively, you could use the Spelltouched feats in unearthed arcana, but they're kind of terrible.

Ur-Priests can steal spell-like abilities for 24 hours.

Ur-Priests can steal spell-like abilities for 24 hours.

Indeed they can. It seems like people dip Ur-Priest and then theurge into other stuff (for good reason, really). But Ur-Priest has great class features in addition to spellcasting boons.

There's also Totemist, which does a marvelous job of imitating monster skills

Erudite is the closest thing in canon (they instantly learn any psionic power they see, I believe, though they can only have a certain number on-hand each day.)

It wouldn't be too hard to make a Sorcerer / Wizard cross using the Erudite's basic design, though be careful -- it'll be awfully powerful.

Erudites have to learn their powers from a willing Psionic creature/character. But if they knock something out, they can learn all its stuff.

And the Spells to Power alternate class feature lets that apply to magic spells as well.
