View Full Version : Last Words

One of the many things I love about The Giant's writing is that when he kills his characters, he usually gives them great last words. So here are my top 10 favourite last words for OOTS characters. What are yours?

10. "I’m getting too old for—" --The Chief, Strip 360
Poor Chief. He was a likeable, no-nonsense, curmudgeonly sort and a beautiful evokation of a familiar archetype. But he had to go and say that. He who lives by the trope dies by the trope. You will be missed.

9. "Be better. Both of you. Be better than this town. Than all of this." --Mia Starshine, Strip 772
This strip was Mia's only appearance to date, but it was a moving one. With her dying words, she provided huge insight into Haley's character and a damning comdemnation of Ian's. You seemed like a nice lady, Mia. Sorry we never got to know you.

8. "...I don’t expect any trouble." --Unnamed Guild Thief, Strip 611
Do I even have to explain this one? A cocky henchman thinks he's going to take out hero down easily, but he's got another thing coming. The image of Belkar looming out of the mist behind him, especially after his period of forced restraint followed by crippling illness, was a gloriously triumphant moment.

7. "You’ll serve me or you’ll die! Hold Person!" --Samantha, Strip 189
Samantha was a really enjoyable minor villain. Seeing a bratty teenager give the Order such a hard time gave me many a mirthful grin. And her death provided the first concrete evidence of how much of a badass Miko was. As this quote shows, even when she was in way over her head, Samantha never lost her demanding, presumptuous attitude. A bitch to the end.

6. "Damn it... I was only 10 XP away... from my second level of Commoner." --Evisceratus, Strip 780
One of the best punchlines in this comic's entire run. Is there anyone who didn't laugh at the man who'd been laboriously set up as Belkar's antagonist getting gutted by a cat? Evisceratus: proving that personal rivals aren't always on the same level.

5. "No thanks, then... I’ll take my chances that the Afterlife... won’t have any punishment worse... than not being with you." --Terkla, Strip 593
Oh, Therkla. Poor, sweet Therkla. An enemy NPC in love with an already-taken PC? She was doomed from the start. She tried as hard as she could to make a solution that was never possible. And in the end, she accepted its inevitability. A moment of silence for a lovestruck ninja.

4. "Okay... Okay, then... I can live with that." --Miko Miyazaki, Strip 464
What can be said about Miko that hasn't been said already? I'm one of the ones who enjoyed her character, but I'd hate to see her resurrected, and her last words have a lot to do with that. For her entire run in OOTS, she has refused to compromise on anything, immediately resorting to anger and violence when she doesn't get her way. But with her death, she finally learned some humility. She didn't get the afterlife she dreamed of, but as long as she could see her beloved horse, it was good enough.

3. "Goodbye... Redcloak." --Right-Eye, Start of Darkness
Right-Eye's last words were absolutely chilling. What may seem like a heartfelt farewell to his brother was in fact a rejection, a verbal spit in the face to the goblin he had once loved. Right-Eye's story is a tragic one. In the end, he lost everyone he cared about. Most died. One just became something else. I like to think that Right-Eye refused to join the Dark One's army in the afterlife, instead wandering off to some unknown extraplanar destination. I hope he found solace there.

2. "It appears... not everyone... agrees with your... analysis." --Lord Shojo, Strip 407
Shojo. An old man with an embarrassing name and zero combat ability who managed to be one of the biggest badasses in the comic. Shojo was clever, snarky, and self-assured right up until his final moments, using his last breath to deliver a devastating taunt to his murderer. You were one cool, cool guy, Shojo.

1. "I love you all! I love you! I love you! Why don’t... you love... me?" --Tsukiko, Strip 830
I hated Tsukiko. And I mean utterly loathed her. From her creepy crush on Xykon to her bullying and browbeating Redcloak to her smarty-pants teacher's pet attitude, I hated this chick. Until strip 830. I expected to feel vindicated when Redcloak killed her. I expected to say "Yes!" and do a triumphant fist-bump. Instead, I stared at the screen, completely floored by what The Giant had done with a few words. Tsukiko was no longer an extremely irritating foil to a sympathetic antagonist. She was a severely damaged woman living in a state of self-delusion. She was a poor, sad example of what happens when the human need for affection goes tragically wrong. I can't say I miss her, but I do feel sorry for her. Goodbye, Tsukiko. You never had a chance at happiness.

Great compilation . I definately agree with your No. 1. Personally I would put Miko's as slightly higher, but that's just me :smalltongue:.

SoD spoilers:

I have no idea if this counts, as both characters were already dead at this point, but Durokon's and Lirien's last (in-comic) words to each other gave me shivers

"... Does a 21 save?"
:redcloak: "No."
"Crap." -High priest of the twelve gods-, Strip 453
What do you mean it wasn't an awesome fight?

"You may have won this round, Order of the Stick, but we swear our revenge on you! When you least expect-!" -Chimera Trigak-
Scoring a recurring villain gig can be hard sometimes.

"Yeah... I wasn't really buying those theories either... worth a shot tho..." -The Oracle-, Strip 567
Not really his final words but he did die after saying them.

"Pffft! No! I'm just screwing with you. C'mon, let's get undead." -Xykon-, SoD
It totally counts. Xykon is dead. Just not, you know, DEAD-dead.

Nice compilation. I think 3 and 4 would be my tops, though, and in that order.

Of course that's a personal list with some bias, and I think #1 made it to #1 because it's still fresh in the mind. I think ultimately Shojo still wins. I don't know how long Rich spent coming up with those exact words, but I can't think of any better way to underscore Miko being told without a doubt that she was wrong, wrong, wrong from a source she couldn't blithely ignore.

"Now come along, bring me before your master so that we may begin the Trial of the Century" --- Kubota, strip 595

Not a great one, but I like how wrong he went.

Or are the rumors true? Was your eye taken by one of my brothers? Perhaps you are afraid that I will take the other? --- Thanh, strip 827
Nice taunt. It should have deserve a try.

My #1 would be Therkla, and then Miko. But not just for the really final words, more for their entire final speech.

Also Xykon's last words rules.

Very nice compilation. I would put Tsukiko and Miko as #1 and #2 (maybe not in that order) simply because, like you said with Tsu, their last words actually redefined their characters to a certain degree.

Everyone else's last words were poignant and appropriate, but T&M's actually made us re-evaluate who they were, and so I consider them the strongest.

3. would be my top-spot. It says so much, I think but it is still debatable how it is meant. And very probably carries both meanings which makes it even better.

I do not agree with your analysis ... Right-Eye should have been #1.

I'm fairly certain that Right-Eye didn't make it higher only because he was a character in a single prequel book that not everyone has read. Perhaps I'm biased because of how much I love the story of RedCloak, but ... come on.

His last words are only two in number, but he says so much with them. With a single word substitution, he rejects his brother, tells him he is wrong, tells him he no longer stands for what he thinks he does ... Right-Eye's last words are more about RedCloak than Right-Eye and in my mind that makes them even more poignant.

I actually cried a little, but you need the preceding line and some context from previous interactions to understand why.

RC: "Goodbye, Little Brother."
R-E: "Goodbye ... Redcloak."

*wipes away tear*

I hope that Right-Eye got to see his family again ... and I hope that when RedCloak's story reaches its ultimate end, it affords him some measure of peace. Since the very beginning of SoD, that much he has deserved.

I totally agree with your #1, though I might re-position Miko's. Hard to say if I'd give her the #2 slot. Shojo's last pot-shot at his killer is a bit hard to top.

Other notable last words I found:

Random Female Azurite Soldier (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0623.html): "Elf, if you're still here... I hope you choke on your goddamned useless magic."
I like this because it was a defining character for someone who lived rather than the one who was dying. Showing what started V's descent to the 'dark side'.

Demon Roach (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0654.html): "Ah, crap."
What can I say? Short, sweet, and totally Demon Roach.

Another Demon Roach (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0833.html): "At last, a chance to really whip this place into shape without all of the... ...distractions."
I love that little pause at the end. I can almost feel the dawning realization. 'Oh, crap. I'm one of those distractions, aren't I?'

Crystal (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0648.html): "You double-crossing whore, when Bozzok raises me-"
Ah, who can deny the pleasure of sticking it to a person who runs and tattles to <insert authority figure here> any time something doesn't go their way? You know, the kind with an over-inflated sense of their own self-importance. I'll admit I normally see this behavior with spoiled-rotten daddy's-girls and not with hardened assassins, but the principle still fits. While she was fun while she lasted, I will not miss Crystal.

Roy Greenhilt (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0443.html): "Huh. That's harder to break than I would have expected. Maybe if I-"
Okay, maybe not true last words since he was later raised. Nor was it particularly humorous or insightful. It was classic PC behavior in a deadly scenario. Try and solve your scenario without realizing that the world hasn't exactly stopped to let you do so.

Judy (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0755.html): "They play a very important role in the curtailing of our personal liberties and maintaining the current fascist- Unnnh!"
Rule 1 - You do not talk about Death Squad. :smallcool:

Yikyik (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0063.html): "Let's do it."
It isn't certain if the line later in the strip was his or Belkar's as it happened off-screen. In any case, it was done.

Yokyok (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0357.html): "Oh shi-"
Sorry Yokyok, playing a noble character won't save you from your racial stereotype.

Sangwaan (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0429.html): "He's coming straight at us!"
First non-verbal indication that anyone could die in the upcoming battle.

Grand Larcenist (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0435.html): "What the- What are you doing??"
Ah, Belkar's quasi-good act.

General Chang (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0440.html): "You'll never take this city while I'm alive, monster!"
:xykon: "Terms accepted."

Hobgoblin Cleric (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0445.html): *sniff* "I think... I think there's something in my eye. AAAH!"
:belkar: "Got it out for you."

Hobgoblin Soldier (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0451.html): "I regret to inform that I am no longer fit for duty... ...Supreme Leader..."
A defining character moment for Redcloak here. Thus beginning his 'redemption' from Xykon's lackey into what we've seen in recent comics.

Azurite Soldier (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0452.html): "Holy-"
Nothing like that moment when you realize that no, that tide of enemies isn't slowing down.

Huecuva (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0453.html): "Huh?"
Ninja (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0453.html): "That doesn't make any-"
Ah, the 'Giant dwarf with a hammer proposal'.

Aged Kidnapper (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0458.html): "It's so much safer up here!"
:tsukiko: "SHOUT!"
:nale: "Well, now, really, what did you expect after a line like that?"

My number one and two are Right-Eye and Miko, respectively. Right-Eye for pretty much the reasons suzaliscious gave. Miko is tragic too. Her words convey that she is utterly defeated. That she has lost everything that defined her and gave her purpose, except for what was arguably her only friend, her horse. It really made me feel sorry for the character.

This thread finally got me to buy SoD. (I would have bought OtOoPCs along with it, but the site said it was temporarily out of print. Meh.)

I think the Random Hobgoblin Soldier who saved Redcloak and triggered his epiphany deserves to be on this list more than the Unnamed Guild Thief that Belkar killed AFTER having an epiphany.

"You may have won this round, Order of the Stick, but we swear our revenge on you! When you least expect-!" -Chimera Trigak-

Close, but the actual dying words of the Trigak Chimera were - of course -"Gak", "Gak" and "Gak" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0021.html), which only makes its death even more awesome.

You do realize we're working to fix that (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/599092525/the-order-of-the-stick-reprint-drive/) and you can get any book you want by contributing to it, right?

It was a heartfelt goodbye to his best friend and brother.

I don't think so...

Right-Eye always hated the idea of the goblins calling his brother Redcloak - he always referred to him as 'Big Brother', an affectionate nickname.

In farewelling Redcloak by the name he always despised, however, Right-Eye rejects him as a brother and friend. He is suggesting that all Redcloak is now is a servant of Xykon (and maybe, he is not worthy of the goblin name that his parents bestowed on him). In my opinion, it was a tragically ironic last statement.

I dunno if I'd agree with Therkla's last words being on the list.

her infatuation with Elan was childish based entirely on his physical appearance. And she died being a little drama queen when her life could have been saved, because the guy she doesn't really know at all won't dump his GF for her.

Her final words were tragic, but more in a stupid waste she hasn't learned anything sort of way. But I guess the same could be said of Tsukiko, who I do like on the list, so Dunno. Mixed feelings on that one either way.

I'd also agree with Righteye being #1.

I'd also like to nominate Trigak (the chimera) for his final words being Gak x 3.

Hey, Elan did treat Therkla very nicely. I doubt she would like Nale if she had met him. So it's not just about the looks.

What, no love for Thanh?

I admit it's less "last words" and more "dying moments", but if we include Miko's acceptance of her fate, then he deserves to be right up there with her. Ordering Niu to take the scroll and run, leave them all behind and contact the remaining Paladins at all costs, before charging suicidally back into Redcloak's forces. His last words before being crushed by the Osmiun Elemental to call Redcloak a coward for not having the stones to fight him.
Not that I condemn Redcloak for ignoring the taunt - it was a genuinely badass moment for our favourite green dude - but as deaths go it was a very epic one. The "Last Stand" category of death was always one of my favourites, especially when it's combined with "Hold The Line".

"Nothing else matters! My life is the price I gladly pay to get that message to our king. Haley told me to let you handle anything requiring stealth, Niu, and this is exactly that. Do you require that it be an order? It is. A direct order. GO!"

"...you're the bravest man I've ever met."

I would have switched 4 with 5 and 1 with 2 out of the original listing.

Therkla knew she was dying, knew that by accepting help she might live, knew that as an evil NPC (at least slightly, and she definatly served an evil lord) she would probably not make it to a higher plane. She still didn't try to make Elan feel worse about his choice.
Miko if you read the strip, she asked Soon if she could be a Paladin again. She was as deliusional as Tsukiko but didn't even realize it at the end, although in fairness many real-life people with fatal wounds have gone on for minutes of sometimes even hours without realizing how bad it was/ or not caring.

For Tsukiko vs Shojo IMO badass taunt beats tragic realization any day.

And if death scene rather than actual last words was the factor Thanh's would be right up there with these.

Reguardless of opinions though, great thread and love the other comments.

Now that you mentioned it, are you sure the chief is dead? He might have got a revive dead after the party left, consider his importance. I don't remember it said anywhere that he can't be revived.

Didn't Nale cut his head off and stick his head on his sword?

I can't believe no one's mentioned the thief in Panel 2 of #612 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0612.html) -

"Well, I guess it wouldn't kill us to let you stay in - "

Didn't Nale cut his head off and stick his head on his sword? So? They recovered his head so they should still be able to raise/resurrect him.

I don't get this one. What is embarrassing about his name?

I'm gonna guess that girly names don't sit well with most guys.

"Shojo" is close enough to the Japanese Romanization of "young woman" to be all sorts of embarrassing.

Ever since I found that out, I've been wondering if it was deliberate on Rich's part. Probably not.

Of course, it's not like anyone from Azure City actually speaks Japanese.

Resurrection has an associated cost with it. I'm not sure that with the modest non-adventurer income of an NPC the CPPD Chief has 10,000 GP of diamonds lying around. And if anyone says that the government could resurrect their employees I'll laugh my head off.

Probably because Japan doesn't exist. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0209.html) :smalltongue:

"The government could resurrect their employees."

I live to spread laughter.

Yes, that was my point.

I know, it just reminded me of that conversation.
