View Full Version : (RE: d20 Modern) The Food Here Is Terrible, And So Is the Service!!(IC, Private)

Winter in the mountainous region of northern united states. The jukebox in the corner of this 70's themed diner continues to play songs from another age. The triple ceiling fans dotting the room hummed lowly, the sound adding to the drone of yet another Elvis tune. The food here is tasteful but due to the outclassed theme and far better bars and chefs in supply here in your home town of Racoon City, this place is usually abandoned. It's location of at the surrounding of the mountains edge of town doesn't help either since its a insurmountable cliff wall surrounding it and the only people who pass by are hikers seeking to climb the mountain. Currently, Janet(The only waitress) and the Chef Ralph are in the kitchen. Despite being a diner cook now he used to be a chef in the army, so despite the low budget of his diner, his food is cost effective AND tasteful. His old and busted m16 from his days in Desert Storm sit above the bar and at the entrance there is a steel long-sword that Ralph sharpens every day. It has been in his family for generations as well as the shield marking the crest of the Meldwin family line from the family's prosperity in the medieval era. As the last of the food is dished out, Janet moves over to the Jukebox and turns it off, so the service window radio can be heard. Though as it clicked on, the RCN (Raccoon News Station) is it's standard channel, but all that comes out is static. In frustration, Ralph slams his fist on the thing and a small crackling is heard from within the radio that is prone to shorting out.

"Blasted device! Always breaking down. I'll have to buy a new one once business picks up in the summer."

In the corner of the diner sat a lone man who didn't really attract much attention to himself. He was dressed in a blue striped suit and a bowler cap sat nicely on his head. Ferdinando (or Savio as he had been going by for many years now) was quite a sight to see in this diner. The old style diner seemed to go well with the old man in his retro sense of style. His once black hair, now had a silver sheen to it which gave him a more experienced look.

Savio sat in his corner quietly and was quite content to be left alone with his thoughts. One of the main reasons he liked this diner was the fact that it was so quiet and deserted. He puffed casually on the cigar in the corner of his mouth and allowed himself to relax. The familiar weight of the mechanism on his right forearm gave him comfort and a feeling of security, he was always more at ease when he had a firearm close at hand.

He heard Ralph's plight and stood up slowly from his chair. He grabbed his cane from the wall it was leaning on and gripped it tightly in his right hand. He began to stride toward the counter, relying heavily on the cane. A beautiful piece in itself, a serpent baring its fangs was the shape of the handle that he now held on to. "Fitting" he had always thought. Considering that the cane actually concealed a hidden blade that was coated with a devastating poison of his own make.

As he walked toward the counter he began to speak, his thick Italian accent coating his words. "Yo, Ralphy. Why don't you your buddy Salvio take a look at that hunk of junk." Ferdinando was always fond of Ralph since the man knew not to ask questions that would have made him unable to hang around. Having been in desert storm, Ferdinando was quite sure that he knew how to spot a hidden blade. But he never called him on it, and that made him happy to help.

Walking over to him he began to work on the radio with ease. He had always been at ease with technology, both new and old.

Ralph smiles as Savio makes his way to the serving window and takes the radio to begin work. With a satisfied nod he leaves Savio to it, glad he had such a nice regular who was willing to go out of their way for him, and mentally marked to return the favor.

Ferdinando
Radio: As you take apart the radio to look at the guts, you notice the antenna is improperly connected to the receiving portion on the radios circuitry. It wasn't of course made this way, but it looks as if at one point, the antenna had been pulled out of it's socket, most likely by some angry customer. Then it appears it was badly repaired. With just a bit of a twist from a screwdriver you free the hack job and repair it to good and working order. The static clearing.

As Savio put the radio back together and turned the device back on. A radio station relaying the news of a small brawl that broke out downtown. 3 people were injured in the altercation and were on route to the Racoon City General Hospital. While the one who did all the injuring was being rushed to a psych ward for violent behavior. As a lawyer he is believed to have suffered a psychotic lapse. From there the radio went to elevator music as news broadcaster went off air.

Ralph replied in a tone of disgust, "People come here to get away from violence and lawyers, that's why we are so far away from everyone else and on a mountain. Sad to hear the news, but thank you Savio for the work. I owe you one."

"What a piece of junk" Ferdinando thought to himself as he set the radio down and worked on it. He set the cane against the counter as he sat down on a stool to work. He had made it a habit of appearing disabled whenever anyone could see him. He had even gone so far as to even do it in private, so as to avoid a slip up. The truth was that Ferdinando was in better than good physical condition, especially for his age. But ever since he came to Raccoon City he took up the alternate identity of a Savio Porto. A wounded war veteran from Vietnam was a perfect cover for dodging police.

He cracked a smile as the static cleared and the radio rang out crystal clear. He frowned at the news that he was hearing though. He came to Raccoon city for a few reasons: very few cops, low crime rate, and it didn't draw attention to itself. Looking up at Ralph he said with a nod, his accent again dripping over his words "Yeah, sometimes people need to learn to shut their mouths. They get all upset when the guy they disrespect knocks their teeth out."

Ferdinando was many things, good with people was not one of them.

the door opened to reveal what could only be called a human mountain. he stands just over 6 foot and is sweating slightly from his daily run up to the dinner. as he enters he hangs up his tactical vest up on the rack by the door. "if you have something thats uncomfortable to wear but will save your life. get used to it and wear it everyday." has always been one of his mottos. he waves at Janet and Ralph as he makes his way over to his favorite spot at the bar. as he sits waiting for Janet to bring over some water he shifts his, no where near standard issue, Desert Eagle to a more comfortable place at his hip. sitting there in his urban fatigues he looks the picture of a hard ass drill sergeant. which just happens to be what he was in the marines before he got out and took a job with the local police force.

Ralph could only give a solid nod before sighing and clicking off his radio to allow the soft sizzle of the open-top stove to fill the place. He went back to making his own dinner since everyone here so far had already been served. Currently the upstairs to the diner, where Ralph lived, was closed off by his door though it was locked so no patrons could sneak by and upstairs since it would be a great way to get to the general store roof next door. Not to mention it was his home and he didn't want people up there.

As Badryk entered covered in sweat. Ralph rolled his eyes at the man's commitment to fitness, and turned on a small oscilating fan with a car freshener hung in front of the blade to give the place a nicer smell. No matter the knowledge he knew the man wouldn't use the firearm at his hip Ralph still said calmly as he came in. "Ey, the gun. Safety. Show me the safety is on." It wasn't that he didn't trust him, he just didn't want a .50 cal slug embedding itself into something or someone by mistake.

Finally, he gave a smile and started to go back to being a cook again now that he had a fixed radio. Janet of course would bring the impromtu cop his glass of water with her usual smile, a little sass but it was clear she enjoyed serving all of the customers.

Ferdinando turned and looked at the man who just came in. As always he wasn't pleased to see him. It wasn't like they had ever truly talked, but he was just so stupid. At first he had been uncomfortable to have a military man in the same place as him, then he realized just how oblivious he was to everything around him. His voice changed almost completely as he spoke this time, which of course was to be expected since he also changed languages. This time he spoke Japanese, something he knew Ralph could understand "Oh great, our salvation has arrived...and it smells like dead fish."

Standing up from his chair he grabbed his cane and began to walk back to his seat. His cigar bobbed out of his mouth as he puffed smoke like a chimney.

as Ralph said his predictable line about guns and safetys Badryk just shook his head. the holster was designed to click the safety on and off as he drew or holstered the gun. why cant Ralph remember that he though as he sat. when Janet gave him his water he thanked her in his Irish accented voice, and after hearing the old man spout off his line of Japanese he says "if you would please speak in English. spent some time in japan but never could figure out what they was sayin."

At Savio's quite rude comment in Japanese, Ralph rolled his eyes as if he didn't approve, but the small twist of his lip showed he found it humorous. He knew the older gentleman was usually less gentle with his words than most people he met, but he had a beneficial good side, as with the radio. However as Janet came over, the one who taught him japanese, she gave him a light smack up the head and whispered to Ralph. "Don't encourage him."

As Badryk just settles into getting his water, his walkie-talkie beeps at him before automatically playing the message that was being sent. In a semi-urgent voice the police commissioner's voice came over for the short amount of time for those in the diner to hear "Look we need..." Before a small crackle and a pop came from the walkie talkie as the well used device shorted out and died.

The message, though short, didn't sound specific and the beep at the start meant it was a general message so they probably meant for anyone who was free to come down and help. Plus, since the commissioner never got off his backside they would have to go to the police station near the center of town to arrive there. On the plus side, the drive took you past the recently opened zoo.

Grabbing the radio off the clip on his hip he sakes it several times pressing the bottom frustrated. Taking it by the antenna he fallows the first rule of engendering and bangs it against the table to get it to work... lightly. After a wile he drops it cussing about government issue crap never working right and always breaking at the most convenient of times.
He sighs and asks " can anyone fix this, made by the lowest bidder, block of crap? Because I really don't want to run all the way over to the station just because that fat ass sat on the button again." As happens everytime he gets angry about something not working right his accent got even thicker.

As the old man hobbled back to his spot he didn't even make eye contact with the soldier. However at his comment about speaking in English he simply replied in an uncaring tone "Eh, go suck on a lemon skunk pits." Obviously the old man didn't really care about the soldier. He was over 70, what could he do?

As he got to his seat he carefully lowered himself back down into his seat and then lay his cane across his lap. He puffed thoughtfully on his cigar as he listened to the radio. It didn't appear too interesting, in any respect nothing for him to worry about. He cracked a small smile at the soldier's dilemma, but made no move to help him. Even though he probably could.

You hear the rumble of large motorcycle pulling up, before the engine cuts out. An obviously Indian man walks in,wearing a thick leather jacket and motorcycle chaps, his long black hair braided behind him. He walks over to the bar and sits well away from any other customers. He sits facing the rest of the occupants, and watches each one, as if distrusting of everyone.

Before Ralph waved Baryk into the kitchen to use his phone, a Ford 150 pulled in to the diner. By Ralph's expression, this wasnt a regular and he was eager to make a good presentation. He waved to Greg Graffin as he entered. He was not sure if that was his real name.

As the man from the truck came in he was nursing his hand that was wrapped in bloody bandages. Seeing this of course, Ralph offered the first aid kit, which was quickly turned down. The man spoke gruffly as he winced in pain. He seemed a bit pale from bloodloss but otherwise stable.

"Nah thanks, just a bite from some crazy group of ruffians trying to mug me. I tossed em about a bit and left them. This usually such a rough neighborhood?"

This od course made Ralph frown visibly, especially since the rough people were supposed to have been at the center of town, not here near the rim. Ralph already began to think of closing up early.

The phone in the kitchen was well maintained and looked sharp and clean and ready for use.

There it was. Suddenly, it seemed as if everything in the diner all at once grew silent. It wasn't that the sizzle of the grill had ceased or that everyone had at once, held their breath. It wasn't even that the soft whoosh of the fan above had stopped its turning. The air felt dead, as if the world as it was had died. More, a new sound, one that shouldn't have been easy to hear but seemed to echo in the soul. A distant howling from the vents that took the grease and steam from the stove outside, it sounded like souls crying out in anguish. A moan of sadness. The wind is what the mind wanted it to be.

The eyes of everyone in the diner all seemed to stop what they were doing and be drawn towards the large diner windows that made up the wall facing the street, drawn by some unknown force as a chill ran through the body. Taking the view to the city sprawled out under the moonlight this cloudless starry night.

Party

Badryk
As you pick up the phone to call, you feel as if something is off but at first don't pick up on what it is. Only after you dial the number and wait for the response, does it occur to you. There is no dial tone whatsoever. You aren't even greeted by the informative female voice that your call had gone wrong. There was nothing there but silence. Before your mind had time to question why, your eyes suddenly drew to the diner glass window, which you noticed everyone else looking out, but being in the back you couldn't see their expressions, something was wrong...but everything looked fine to you.

Greg
Despite the fact this new patron's story didn't add up in your mind and there was obviously no reason to trust him, you felt your gaze pulled away from him to the windows as if pushed to do so by some unseen force. However, the news that was clear was far worse than there being a possible spy among you in the diner. There was smoke in the sky. It wasn't just on or two lone trails of smoke leading into the sky, there were dozens of them. Most originating from the center of the city, near your home! This was terrible, but there was something else you spotted. All around the street where the streetlights no longer lit, even though it was obviously the hour for them to be on, shadows of figures moved about, obscured by the darkness, but you could make out one figure as it drew closer to the diner. Just another human....though the way they moved was off...like all the other shadows.

Savio/Ferdinando
Even with the rest of the entries into the diner, your night wasn't that bad off. Ralph owed you a favor and he was always one to pay back a favor. Especially since he wasn't the type to be cheap about it either. However, by instinct alone that something, just wasn't right, you took your gaze to the window and to the city. You knew something wasn't right. Smoke lined the sky as it trailed from dozens of different places around the city. The heaviest concentration from the center of the city, but that wasn't the only area. What's more, is the lights seemed to be out on the streets! Of course most of the buildings were still lit up since the city had regular power failures so every building had a generator, but the streetlights ran on the city power and they were all out. The street was shrouded in darkness.

Dimitri
The night was great. Despite the fact the patrons seemed a little off kilter today it was alright. That is, until your body looked at the window and laid bare your Racoon City. The city was burning. Not burning in the way that every single building was ablaze in a fiery inferno, but enough to the point that something HAD to be terribly wrong since there were literally dozens of smokestacks piling into the skies. Something terrible had happened. Something absolutely terrible.

After a brief moment of silence, Ralph's gruff voice cut through the still air, but did nothing to get rid of the sense of the grim. "Wha-what the hell is going on..." His voice didn't exactly sound questioning and in fact more of a statement. However, as an answer to the question a lone man came into view, while he had been obscured by shadow, as he got close enough to be seen by light of the diner. His clothes were lightly tattered and wounds covered most of his right arm, the blood from those wounds blocked out the shape or type of the wounds but they are definitely numerous and his gaze is empty and rimmed as if there hadn't been any sleep for days. Without saying anything despite his mouth hanging open and his unsteady shamble to the diner window. He raised up both arms against the large solid window with a hard thud, but the window held. Instantly angry at this ruffian, Ralph suddenly obviously attempted to be intimidating to this man while shouting at him. "Ey! Get off my windows and go somewhere else!" He meant to be more threatening, but Ralph was also a bit scared. The city was ablaze and it hadn't been barely 15 minutes ago.

The man showed no response whatsoever to Ralph as if he hadn't said anything. He merely turned to Ralph as he tried to look intimidating, raised up both arms and threw himself into the glass in what must have been a painful attempt to break it, and he had some success. Marked by where the blooded arm hit was a crack that spread on impact...now Ralph was pissed and drew down the longsword that he hung over the doorway and started to reach for the door handle to go confront the prick, but he was interrupted as the man gave a cry that could only be compared to that of a banshee.

Party
Roll a fort save.

As the cry of this man echoed out he tried to get back to his feet, at the same time.....a sea of other people, bloodied and slow moving, seeming to barely function on their feet came into view of the diner. There was at least a hundred of them, and by the looks of it, there were more in tow. Despite the fact they were human, they all looked to carry grave wounds on them....and by the fact they started to push and bang on the door as ralph quickly locked it. These "people" had the same intention as the first man, they wanted inside, but the feeling that began to crawl up your body says they didn't come for the atmosphere or for fine dining. This wasn't natural. This wasn't right. It was time to run.

All at once, Ferdinando's world came crashing down at the sight of all of this. His cigar hung loosely in his mouth and a thin line of smoke barely trickled out of it.The old man's eyes were wide, wide with fear. These "people" were displaying a host of symptoms that could be related to rabies, or just plain madness for that matter. A single person going berserk he could understand, but there must have been hundreds of them. "Dear Mary mother of god, what the hell is going on here?"

Ralph for one immediately reached above the door to grab the shield off the rack as well, not that he planned on exactly using it, but the scabbard for the sword was matched to the shield and he inserted it as he made a sprint for the door leading up to his apartment, and more importantly, the roof. While they had probably never even seen the back, it was just an area for trash. There was a tall gate on either side to keep out the undesirable back there and it was rimmed with some sharp barbs. It would be a trap if they went that way so as Ralph dug out the key from his pocket faster than he ever had before and jammed it in the lock and unlocked it, pushing his way up the narrow stairs without a further stalling.

Ralph's aim was the roof since they could use it to hop to the next building over. The building next door was a general store and had very few windows on the bottom floor for people to break in and since he would take the board he kept up there for playing pranks on Al (the owner of the general store) with him. The crazy mob outside would have to jump across the gap and since it was a 2 floor drop of almost 25 feet. He was pretty sure they wouldn't risk it if they made it up there. First though, he made it to his living room hoping that they wouldn't make it up here and began to drag his old bookcase towards the stairs to block the door once everyone was up. Ralph yelled down to them as more of the crazed mob literally threw themselves against the glass in a frenzy. The glass was holding up for the moment, but it wouldn't last much longer.

"Get up here! I'm closing the door as soon as I hear glass hitting the floor! Up, or fend for yourself!"

he didn't sound joking at all, to be honest, this scared him more than anything ever had. He had seen men die in front of him, but never so many people at once, and they just weren't natural. It wasn't that they were just violent, all of them had some sort of disease. he just knew it. Something was wrong and he didn't want to be on the other side.

Having been in a stunned silence as the "people" threw themselves against the glass. The wounded trucker who had come in got up in a panic as he rattled out a very long statement in spanish that would translate to a prayer to God for his safety as he began to rush up the stairs. As he rounded the bend on the stairs he bell and boxed his injured hand on the wall before regaining his balance and standing panting on the opposing end of the room from the stairs

"Now this is an interesting turn of events" Ferdinando thought to himself as he shuffled up the stairs as quickly as he could, while still limping. He wasn't referring to the crazed mob that seemed intent on shattering the diner window. Rather, that the soldier was yelling orders at him and Ferdinando wasn't telling him where exactly he could shove that desert eagle. Well...who was he to break tradition?

The other three people who were in the bar (Greg, Janet, and Dimitri) both rushed up following after the old man into the room. The second floor of the diner was just as big as the first but here Ralph's wealth showed through a bit more. Not only was the wall where the glass showing into the street of the diner downstairs converted into a giant LCD HD TV, but top of the line speakers rimmed the room giving full surround sound. The layout here was a bit different then in the diner, but it obviously accommodated two people, which in this case would be Janet and Ralph. No they weren't married, but they might as well be. Doors led off into the bedrooms and an open door led into the bathroom, and another into the kitchen, right above the diner kitchen in fact.

There it came, barely had Janet closed teh door to the diner downstairs and made it to the top then there was the sound of cracking glass, and further breaking and tinkling of glass as it crashed to the floor. Following this sound was both the crunch of glass under feet, and the thudding sound of Ralph and Badryk's shoulders hitting the wood. ((For the record. It was a Strength check and the total with Josh's assistance of +2 was a total of 21...the DC was 20 so :P)) The extremely well made bookcase tumbled down the stairs to lodge itself up against the door. It wasn't the cleanest fit, but the crazed people downstairs didn't seem to have the power to crack the hand-carved mahogany of the door now that it had a bookcase reinforcing it.

Now that that was taken care of Ralph seemed to relax only a little bit as he went to the T.V. and turned it on to hopefully find some news. However, seeing that the news channels were all blank or showing the emergency evacuation message, comfort was not found there. So Ralph changed the channel to some celtic music. Since the satellites were still bouncing t.v. teh music came on around the room...droning out the thudding from the zombies only thanks to Ralph closing the upstairs door to the stairwell that led downstairs. Letting his shield and blade from his hand he stumbled over to his couch and plopped down, Janet instantly going to comfort him. Ralph only said a few words before once again falling silent*

"What...the hell...is going on...?"

Now that the biggest threat had past... for now... badryk relaxed a little and holstered his gun. Even though they where safe for the moment he knew that it wouldn't last. They had to move. But first "Ralph do you have anything to block this door as well? Don't think they are getting past the first but in case they do I want a little more warning then them charging up here." He looks around and sits down in a chair and says "I know you all are in shock from resent events and just want to sit but this is not the time. We need to figure out what to do from here where we are going to go and how to survive what ever this is. Any one got any suggestions?"

Bursting into a fit of laughter at the has been soldier turned cop, "Greg" mocks him for doing exactly what he said they shouldn't. When he finishes, he turns and asks Ralph if he has a real weapon, like another blade, for example. He walks around the room, looking for weaknesses and good choke points to bottleneck the mob if it came to it. What they needed to do is get away, to the local armoury or the gunstore, not sit on their asses like the little soldier boy was doing.

Ferdinando just gave the soldier a blank stare as he did exactly what he said they couldn't afford to do. the old man literally needed time to absorb the raw stupidity that he had just absorbed from the man. Slowly he mouthed his response, as if chewing his words carefully before spitting them out. "Dear Mary mother of God, how did your brain even learn human speech? For God's sake, this event is stressful enough without Captain kangaroo trying to give us all mental relapses with his extremely useful comments."

Ferdinando limped across the room and made sure to stay away from the door. he shifted the cane in his grip, as if testing to make sure that it was ready to draw should he need it soon.

Dimitri was having a hard time coping, not just with everyone seeming to crazy, but with the soldier's constant rotorical it seemed to be able to stand through it. Until they made it into the room above, the shattering of the glass had wracked his sanity to the point of breaking and Dimitri cast his bag to the side as he started walking to the couch. His one standing of sanity the solider told him he could not sit, but all he wanted to do was sit. His mind began to work, if he got rid of the soldier, he could sit all he wanted! Quickly drawing his knife and stabbing at the soldier. He caught him by surprise (Flatfoot since you have no reason to expect being stabbed.

Badryk sights the crazed man lunging at him to late and leaps up sending the chair flying he blocks the knife but doesn't move it far enough as it snags his left arm cutting a shallow gash just below his shoulder. Not that bad ive survived with worse he thinks as he backs off crouching defensively. "Drop the knife and sit down now!" He bellows at the man loud enough to shake the pictures on the wall I don't know if I can right now but here's an intimidate check [roll0]

Greg seems perfectly content to stand and watch the quiet guy beat the hell out of the loud one. After all, it's the quiet ones that are the most dangerous. And it's not really his fight.

Ralph wasn't going to take this. Outside, they outnumbered him far too much to give him a chance to fight, but he was not about to have there be madness up here. Not in his home. Storming over to Dimitri he did little more than give him a nasty right cross with his bare fist.

Hit: 31 total.

Badryk pulls his baton and (since pulling a weapon is a move action) he attacks with a shot aimed at the arm holding the knife.

((Continuing since Dmitri is out cold from Josh's assist))As the pain from both Ralph's punch and Badryk's baton hit him at the same time his mind couldn't take the further stress and he lost conciousness as he fell to the floor. Immediately Ralph kicked the knife that had fallen from Dmitri's now limp hand under the couch and grabbed him to stop him from falling spitting a string of curses in japanese as he did so. They contained but were not limited to the words; crazy, stress, cuff, leave, and ,the, a, him, bathroom. To emphasize this he started to drag dimitri to the guest bath and set him down inside with a groan and a very, "if one more of you goes nuts I swear I will throw you out the second story window and have a chair follow you on the way down" look.

That nonsense taken care of he gestures to his bedroom that also contained the ladder to the roof for Badryk. "Get yourself patched up. We can rest here since they...they...."*he trailed off here as he was revisited b the sight of the crazed mob downstairs. "since they can't get in here. Rest. We can try figuring out what's going on afterwords." *he had more than enough for one day. Janet was in her chair eyes wide, she couldn't believe what was happenign and her brain even so went as to refuse it. She was off in her happy place. She would stay there until she could accept it.

Ralph sat down on the couch before swinging his legs to settle in. After thinking about it for a moment he looked over to Dmitri's pack "Savio, go through his bag and see if he has anything useful. The knife will stay under the couch for him to find and there is some food in the pantry he can have, but his bag might be useful. CHeck it for me." Turning his head to Greg. "Greg, I don't know what you are good for or if you are good for anything, so can you go to the roof and look around for me, try to guess how dangerous it is out there?" After this, Ralph lay his head back on the arm of the couch and closed his eyes, taking long, deep breaths.

After badryk puts away his baton he turns to Ralph and asks him "you got anything that I could use to tie around my arm so I can stop bleeding on your carpet?"

He sighed and shook his head gesturing again for his bedroom.

"White case. Says 'First Aid' in big red letters on it."
