View Full Version : Creepy "Hillbilly" Music

Soon, my players will know the horror that is the Pathfinder Ogre (http://paizo.com/store/v5748btpy7xpt). However, two of them recently let it slip that what really scares them is sounds. To get them in the mood for cannibal, inbred, monstrous ogrekin, I want some appropriately creepy music. I'm basically looking for the bluegrass equivalent of Tom Waits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8reJvRWXKI). This Devil's Workday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcZNxfz4yaM) (warning: profanity) might be another reference, though more bluegrass-y than New Orleans.

Any ideas?

You will not find a better piece of music to set the scene for creepy hillbillies. Especially if you watch the movie first.

I should probably point out that I (and all my players) were raised in West Virginia, and have heard dueling banjos a thousand times - occasionally live. While I probably will use it, I was hoping for some other ideas, too

I second Dueling Banjos, but also know that, if your playing that little game in particular, than there will be more than just Hillbilly ogres (and kin). There will be undead, and plenty of it. As such, something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNvxjCDOc34) could hammer in that there are bad, bad things ahead. Ambience tracks are nice, to, and if you must fall back on Banjo music, Deliverance and such are your best bet.

Do the players actually fight one? I thought they were included "Just in case."

You could try Those Poor Bastards, they really have the evil country folks vibe nailed down. But it's with lyrics, so it's probably less atmospheric.

Hmm, I thought so, but perhapes not. :smallconfused: I dont actualy have the thing with me, but I could have sworn they had to at least avoid it for some time or another.

Second, I couldn't found the songs I was looking for, but the Hackensaw Boys might be something.
Blue Run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TJuCm_qhcY&feature=related)
Other songs from them, which I couldn't find non-live versions of, but are worth mentioning; Cannon Ball/ Whiskey, Momma/ (or when 1 of the pc's bites the dust: Box of Pine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zahax_ssJls&feature=related)).

Or maybe some 16 Horsepower? Straw Foot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsCGK4b4hDM&feature=related) is pretty great / Clogger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxB58qgcqiA&feature=related) is also something worth a listen. Other songs: Black Soul Choir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-vpAn15-vE) / Haw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DMCzSmkeHE&feature=relmfu).
Personal note: 16 Horsepower was the first concert I've ever went to.

Maybe some Drive-By Truckers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLwrPDRRnf8&feature=related)?

Your players have probably heard it, but the Left 4 Dead 2 theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7-Cu8UA8rM) probably belongs here.

Also, I guess there's a genre (http://www.last.fm/tag/gothabilly)devoted to this sort of thing...

In addition to "gothabilly", there's also "death country".

I like this one, although it's probably more thematically fit for inbreed swamprats instead of inbreed hillbillies.

I quite like Black River Killer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7zyfArxibk&ob=av3n) by Blitzen Trapper. It's not exactly "Hillbilly," but it has that wonderful twang. Satin in a Coffin might be a good alternate Modest Mouse song to go with.

I'll second 16 Horsepower. You've got the dark banjo music, and his singing is really creepy too. Hutterite Mile, Alone & Forsaken, Wayfaring Stranger, Horse Head Fiddle... they did some very haunting stuff.

The second to last time I saw him in concert, his drummer was using a circular saw blade instead of a cymbal. Drumsticks were broken, blood was drawn. And the police came in and interrupted the show. Y'know. The usual sort of thing. :smalleek:

Oh wow. That sounds amazing. Maybe inspiration for the OP? Ogrekin playing music on stupidly dangerous instruments and just not caring?

I can fudge the -2 CHA penalty to make an Ogrekin bard, I think

Perform: Razorwire Banjo.

Edit: I'm saving Ghost Opera (http://youtu.be/S9hGHnXPEi4) for my BBEG Necromancer Bard in another campaign.

The Dead Brothers would be great for this, but they are rather obscure.
The Drunkard's Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln6w5101xiA) (the album version would be better, if you can find it.)
Bela Lugosi's Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bstkuychBzQ) (heh)
I couldn't find on YouTube Ramblin' Man (for more banjo), and Farmer Boy (for more stomp).

Reverend Glasseye are highly recommended.
3 ton chain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnAu3kx5SVU) (would also benefit from the album version)
Seventeen Lashes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ALRdsTIh6E)

16 Horsepower have done some interesting covers, too.
Wayfaring Stranger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_vdlo2X2ug)
Sinnerman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4mR1gKKSQ4)

William Elliott Whitmore isn't creepy, but this is spooky.
Diggin' my grave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nECtWsah2po)

As for Murder by Death, I find You don't miss twice (when you're shaving with a knife) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zef9w8tDUo) very appropriate.

Final note. It's not what you asked for, but have you considered psychobillly? Here's Red Riding Hood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-pBx20OCQU) and Southern Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq9q-rmV8tk).

Both the Deadwood and Carnivale tv show soundtracks would be very apropos, especially the incidental music.

Specific example: the track Iguazu from Deadwood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfusxHokCDg

We spent two WoD sessions being captured by cannibal breeder-rapist mutant hillbillies in tunnels under the Rockies. The soundtrack periodically came back to "Insect Eyes" from "The Hills have Eyes": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3Fr5dxLKY8 All us players spontaneously begin shuddering just by hearing the first tunes of the damn thing... :smalleek:

Rob Zombie has a few songs that would work for this sort of setting. Okay, he's not the greatest musician in the world, but some of the tracks he recorded for his movies are genuinely creepy.

The Devil's Rejects (Main Theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0akUcdpVM8E)
House of 1,000 Corpses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16CMZW0d9hc)

Well, the players should be reaching these enemies tonight >:D

I now have several hours of music (and a pretty badass Pandora channel if that runs out) thanks to the good people of this forum.

The two biggest surprises were finding an entire genre of music that I liked and House of 1000 Corpses being absolutely perfect for the final boss fight.

She had a corpse
Under her bed
She had her fun
But now he's dead
Her momma said
Come feed desire
Her brother said
Hey, throw her on the fire

This is the house
Come on in
This is the house
Built on sin

This is not completely "redneck", but it's that wonderful nasal. Satin coffin might be a good alternative to the Modest Mouse song to go with.

The Hackensaw Boys are from my hometown of Charlottesville, would definitely recommend. Also, the Bad Livers might have some appropriate music, perhaps off the "Blood and Mood" album?

Good luck
