[PF] Summoner and summon monster spell-like ability

Can the summon monster spell like ability summon multiple monsters of lower levels? I.e. when I get access to summon monster II as a summoner, can I use the spell-like ability to instead summon 1d3 monsters from the summon monster I list?

The ability says it allows you to cast the Summon spells, those Summon spells have it written right in their descriptions that you can cast them to summon more of smaller creatures. Why wouldn't you be able to use it to get multiple smaller creatures?

A summoner cannot have more than one summon monster or gate spell active in this way at one time.

which I misread; I didn't see the "spell" qualifier. I.e. if I use summon monster II to get 1d3 from the summon monster I list it's still 1 spell. I thought it was based on # of monsters, not instances of spells.
