I will be doing a let's play of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, a totally bitchin' roguelike where the object is to get from floor one to the MacGuffin, The Orb of Zot, while slaughtering sentient creatures, rats, demons, and anything that stands between you and the orb, while trying to avoid being made mincemeat of by said creatures. Crawl also has a pantheon of gods who can range from extremely useful, depending on your class, to mostly useless except for certain niches, and then there's Xom, the god of randomness, who will basically do whatever he damn well pleases to you, and there's nothing you can do to affect his mood. There are 24 species to choose from, each eith their own innate weirdness and abilities, as follows (stolen wholesale from Cogwheel's LP):

Human: They are vanilla. Average at everything. Unless you pick a class that doesn't work particularly well with any other race, this isn't normally as good as picking the appropriate specialist class. Or maybe that's just my playstyle. Anyway, they're boring.

High Elf: The nice elves. I hate them too. They're average at using invocations (god-given abilities) and magic items, as well as summonings and divinations. Shields and armour, too. Meanwhile, they're weak at poison magic, earth magic, necromancy, maces, axes, polearms, and unarmed combat, as well as slings.

The flip side is that, while their XP gain is slow and their strength could use work, they have good MP gain and are good at everything else. I do mean a slow XP gain, though. Never played high elves, but many swear by them, especially for certain classes.

Deep Elf: Drow, essentially. Horribly low strength, but they're fast, and have ridiculously high intelligence. Their aptitudes in non-magical areas include a very slight boost to evocations (using magic items), decent skill with ranged weapons, slightly less of a hit to XP than high elves, and lameness in most other regards, unless it involves dodging or something. The good news is that they have the highest MP of any race, and godlike magical aptitudes, though they may be beaten in specific schools by other races. In short, excellent casters, terrible at most other things.

Sludge Elf: Ugly elves. No one likes them. They lose many of the high elf aptitudes, but are still fairly similar otherwise (fast, intelligent, bit stronger), and are better than high elves at necromancy (enough to be average, anyway). They're also amazing at unarmed combat and transmutation. Since these are the two things transmuters do most, I'd recommend sludge elves as the race of choice there. Incidentally, elven armour counts as light, for better or worse, and also reduces casting penalty. It's reduced further if you're actually an elf, meaning that elf casters can often get away with wearing ring mail at the very least.

Deep Dwarf: Deep Dwarves are good at the same things dwarves are, for the most part, though less so. They're less tanky, but smarter. They are also better casters, and good at necromancy/translocation, and completely amazing at earth magic/evocations. No one can beat their evocation skill, and their invocation skill isn't half bad either. They can also, at the cost of maximum MP, recharge wands. The catch to all this is the lack of any ntural regeneration.

Hill Orc: Strong, mildly good/average dex, only slightly low int, no XP penalty. Skills are somewhat similar to dwarves, though less good, and they're not quite as horrid at casting. Very good with axes, and quite decent with everything else as well, though not ranged weapons. Not made to be agile/stealthy fighters, either. Still, no XP penalty, and one class has a special variant just for them (see classes). I play orcs quite frequently. Orcs can eat rotten meat, and only rarely get sick from it.

Merfolk: Dextrous little bastards who gain an EV boost while in water, and can swim, great with polearms, okay at charms. 20% XP penalty.

Halflings: Very fast, very stealthy, quite good with any ranged weapons (especially slings). Decent with short blades, too. However, they're fragile, bad with armour/shields/most melee weapons, and ok to lame at any form of magic. Never played one, but it could be good. Oh, no XP penalty, too.

Kobolds: Once again, no XP penalty. Kobolds are a bit like halflings - good at what halflings do, but not quite as much. They are, while still somewhat fragile, also stronger, and better at magic (summoning and necromancy most of all, though they're not amazing at anything). They can use short blades very well, and are fairly good at evocations too. Lastly, kobolds are carnivores. They can't eat anything but meat. The flipside is that they can eat meat when not hungry, so it's a very good thing overall. Oh, and they can eat rotten meat with no problem too.

Spriggan: Fun race, this. They're herbivores. This is a problem. A large one. However, they hunger very slowly, and are excellent at all kinds of magic, with the exception of summoning/necromancy/conjuration (that being blowing things up) and elemental magic. They're terrible at those. Spriggans are also too small to fit into most armour, and are very weak. However, they're fast (as if permanently hasted) and can see invisible. Only Spriggans can match a Deep Elf's MP, and they're also great at stealth and evocations.

Make no mistake, Spriggans are powerful and fun. They just have some severe setbacks that need to be worked around. 30% XP penalty.

Naga: Strange race. The stealthiest in the game, but you can't wear boots, and any armour except the rare naga barding fits you poorly, giving reduced AC. You're also very slow. Their stats are average, as are most of their combat and casting skill aptitudes. The good news is that they are immune to poison, gain AC over time, and can spit poison. They also see invisible, and are masters of poison magic. At least the slowness only applies to movement (which still makes it hard to run away). 20% XP penalty.

Centaur: Very good with ranged attacks and kicking things. Reasonably strong and agile, and also fast (just not as much as Spriggans). Gets hungry quickly, gains an AC boost from tough skin, and has as the same armour issues as nagas. Ranged attacks, sadly, are all they do well - that, and they're about average at melee weapons. 40% XP penalty.

Ogre: Odd one, this. You're too large to wear armour, making you somewhat vulnerable in melee. Well, more than you might expect, anyway. Ogres, weapon-wise, are only good at maces/polearms/staves/fists, and absolutely terrible at the rest. While their base spellcasting skill is good, their aptitudes for the actual branches of magic are not, making them an oddball caster at best. Still, for hybrid casters or invocation-based melee characters, their respectable MP and ludicrous strength could make them pretty good. They get hungry fast (not as much as centaurs), but the ability to eat meat when not hungry, including rotten meat, takes care of that. 10% XP penalty.

Troll: Trolls are basically uber-ogres. You can eat anything. Stuff that would give most races food poisoning, or rotten meat, or meat when not hungry? NO problem. This means that despite getting hungry at three times the speed of the second fastest-hungering race in the game, trolls are typically rolling in food. They also have claws, tough skin, fur (AC) and large size. This means you can't wear most armour, but hit very hard in unarmed combat. Also, low int - they, unlike ogres, should never pretend to be casters. No gloves, thanks to the claws. Oh, and they regenerate. Fast. 50% XP penalty.

Minotaur: The last of the big smashy races, minotaurs are very poor at magic, but agile, strong and great with armour shields, dodging, and any melee/ranged weapon you care to name. Whatever it is, if it's not stealthy or magical, a minotaur is probably good at it. They don't get hungry unusually quickly, but don't have any dietary bonuses like trolls and ogres. They're also awful at invocations/evocations, sadly. Still, at least they can wear any armour, barring some headgear (horns get in the way). 40% XP penalty.

KenkuTengu: Bird people. No helmet for you, thanks to the beak. They're frail, but fast and strong - odd combination for a race, really. They're also very good at summoning and air magic, and can't wear boots due to their talons. At later levels, they become able to fly, first temporarily, and later permanently. They're also quite skilled at conjuration, fire and (to a lesser extent) necromantic magic, but are awful at invocations, earth and ice magic. 20% XP penalty.

Draconian: Draconians are average to above average at almost everything, with a few exceptions (the armour and stealth skills come to mind). They're too oddly shaped to wear most armour, and at level 7, become a random colour. This often improves a handful of their aptitudes, and gives them a resistance/breath weapon, though there are exceptions. Never managed to get one to survive, as much as they intrigue me. 30% penalty.

Demigod: Humans but better. Stat-wise, great at everything. Skill-wise, average at everything. The catch? Slow skill gain, sixty percent XP penalty and, perhaps worse yet, the inability to worship and of the gods. Still, it's good in some cases, and almost never a bad choice as such. Just, you know, not what you'd call a no-brainer.

Demonspawn: Average stats across the board, and somewhat poor aptitudes/skill gains. Or skill gains, anyway. I seem to remember aptitudes being average to mildly below average. They are, however, good at invocations. So why do they deserve the 40% XP penalty? Mutations. Mutations can happen in many ways, in the course of the game, but are random and often harmful. Demonspawn randomly get mutations when they level (there's a chance of getting some mutations at every level, though it's far from guaranteed), and these mutations will never go away. They're also, with the exception of horns, purely beneficial. Unfortunately, like undead, they can't worship the game's good gods.

Mummy: Another oddball race, like the rest you'll be seeing here. Mummies have poor aptitudes in everything but fighting (governs accuracy and HP) and necromancy. They're also weak against fire, have a 50% XP penalty, and have below-average stats, with a bias towards strength (strength may be average, not sure). You also can't drink potions. The good news is that they're immune to pain, poison and negative energy, and never need to eat. Ever. If you play one, play carefully, and take advantage of the ability to take all the time you need. Also, play a fighter, death knight or necromancer, ideally.

Ghoul: Zombie that eats people. Reasonably agile and strong, bit stupid. Good at stealth and unarmed combat, bit lame at everything else, or average at best. The exceptions being that, if you insist on a caster, they're mildly above average at ice/earth magic and necromancy. They're also, like all undead, immune to mutations (they rot and lose max HP instead), cold, negative energy and poison, but vulnerable to various undead-slaying things. Oh, and they can't transform into other creatures, either.

Ghouls can eat anything. Rotten or humanoid meat (if it's both, even better) will actually heal them, making up for their very, very slow regen. They can eat any amount of food without ever getting full, and need to eat to combat the periodic rotting they experience. Oh, and they can't eat non-meat. 20% XP penalty.

Vampires: Another very strange race. To get the basics out of the way, they're decent at most forms of combat, if not great. They're stealthy, and can use any sort of magic (most, anyway) with a reasonable degree of competence. They're also good at necromancy, enchantment and a couple other types of magic. Stat-wise, they're average, and do not get freebie ability gains every 3~5 levels like other races. Mummies also don't, so at least vampires aren't alone.

Now, what makes them special? You can drink blood from any non-insect corpse, more or less, as well as from unarmed attacks against the correct enemies. This is how vampires feed (potions of blood also work). A vampire that's very hungry will gain little effect from potions, and acts like undead. They will also not regenerate. A vampire that's reasonably full is somewhere in between, while with enough blood, a vampire acts as though alive, for better or worse, with very fast regeneration. Of course, this doesn't last long. Oh, and a vampire can never truly starve. Starting at level 3, if they're not currently full, they can turn into bats. Starting at level 6, they can bottle blood up for later use. 50% XP penalty.

Felid: Sentient cats, Can't use items other than reading scrolls/quaffing potions, due to not having hands, also can't wear armor. However, they do get AC bonuses from their fur, as well as being generally dodgy enough to not get hit in the first place, they are pretty good casters, and are very stealthy, and also get an extra life every few levels.

Octopode: A new race, sentient cephalopods, can't wear armor, but can wear eight rings, can swim, and can change the color of their skin for a stealth boost, never played one before. Good at poison magic, okay at everything else except armor, and melee is suicide.

Once you pick your species, you get to pick your class, which is your background, and affects your starting skills and stats(This section also stolen wholesale from Cogwheel's LP):

Fighter [combat]: An all-around fighting class. Fairly powerful, with skills and equipment picked according to your race. So a kobold fighter would be fast and somewhat stealth-based, with some scope for using ranged weapons, while a dwarf fighter is a walking tank, complete with heavy armour and shield.

Gladiator [combat]: Seems to be a fighter variant, but I never played more than one or two short-lived gladiators. They've got some skill in throwing and the generally more dexterous side of melee, as well as a bit of unarmed combat on the side. They also have the moderately rare throwing nets as starting equipment. But then, I never used nets, myself.

Monk [combat]: If you were hoping for spectacular martial arts, walk away. Now. Monks wear light armour (robes, animal skins, leather armour, any elven armour) and punch things. If you already have natural weapons, even better. That's the beginning and end of it, however. While skill impacts unarmed combat more than any other weapon type, there's also the disadvantage of not being able to enchant your weapons. That, and fighting oozes becomes ridiculously painful. Still, monks are entirely viable.

Berserker [hybrid-invocations]: The tag is technically incorrect. Berserkers are mildly dexterous tanks who start out worshipping Trog the Wrathful. Trog hates magic, and approves of killing things/sacrificing said kills/killing spellcasters/burning spellbooks. Oh, and he gives invocations/gifts of weapons, but the invocation skill is never used. Instead, your chance of success/the effect of said invocation depends entirely on your piety. Berserkers are pretty good, but if you don't want your skill/stat distribution biased a little towards being agile, you may want to start with a fighter and pick Trog later.

Paladin [hybrid-invocations]: Paladins are fighters that worship the Shining One, the designated paladin god. He does not take kindly to dishonourable tactics - poison, sneak attacks, negative energy, use of evil items, etc. - but sees no reason to protect you from such effects, except for negative energy. Piety increases over time, and for sacrificing evil objects/killing undead and demons. Ergo, it takes a while. Abilities include blowing things up with holy fire, and having a shield to protect you, plus summoning angels. Oh, and you get an aura that lights you up/gives you See Invisible. All this takes a while, though, except for the aura.

Priest [hybrid-invocations]: The focus, for once, is on the invocation side of things. Priests often use staves, and the real difference between them is the god they pick. First, there's Zin. Zin hates mutations, eating or butchering intelligent creatures, use of evil items, and lots of other things. Piety increases with time, and by tithing with vast sums of cash. Oh, and his abilities mostly just protect you from poison/mutations and, later, eneimes. You can also preach to enemies, with a variety of effects. Zin is a bit of a challenge god.

The other common choice is Yredelemnul. Don't be fooled by the silly name - only the use of holy items offend him, and killing enemies gives piety. He lets you animate the dead, drain life and mirror damage while praying, among other things. You can also (much later) command undead and so forth, and he tends to give gifts of undead servants quite frequently. Decent choice, and beats Zin.

Orc priests can choose Beogh too. Beogh gives little in the way of activated abilities, but orcs will frequently join you on sight after a certain point, may be upgraded to more powerful types of orcs, and get buffed by Beogh. Oh, and your damage/armour bonuses from orcish gear increase with piety, up to a ridiculous 227%.

Healer [hybrid-invocations]: I'm overusing that tag. Maybe I should have just made one for invocation-centric classes. Ah well. Healers are essentially priests of Elyvilon, the third of the good gods, after Zin and the Shining One. Elyvilon is a pacifist - if you harm or butcher anything, make sure you're not praying, so she doesn't notice. Elyvilon grants a variety of healing abilities - useful, in a game where most healing eventually becomes pitiful - and boosted HP. And gives you piety for sacrificing weapons you don't need. Interesting, decent class.

Chaos Knight [hybrid-invocation]: This time, the focus is on combat. Chaos knights are fighters of various sorts (depends on the race, really) with a decent starting invocation skill, worshiping one of the three chaos gods. Makhleb the Destroyer may be the best, as nothing offends him, and you gain piety for killing/sacrificing anything at all. Abilities are simplistic, but useful. You can blow things up, and you can summon some very nice demons, though with a low invo skill, they may not be friendly.

Lugonu the Unformed is the goddess of the Abyss, chaos, carnage and corruption, and basically Cthulhu. The code of conduct resembles Makhleb, and the powers are quite odd. You can use a strange blink variant, depart from the abyss instantly, banish things (insta-kill that you don't get any kind of credit or loot for) and banish yourself to the abyss (good for running ). You may also bless your weapon once per game, powering it up, or corrupt a level. Corrupting a level is strange - walls appear where there were none before, while previously existing walls might be broken up in parts, and demons are everywhere, most of them low-grade and friendly. Better than it sounds.

Lastly, there's Xom of Chaos. Xom is the RNG personified. Piety cannot be affected, but is altered randomly, and I'm not entirely clear what effect it has on Xom's actions, though having more is good. Xom also has, unique among the gods, a boredom level. The chaos knight is a plaything, not a worshiper, and had better be entertaining. If you're not? He gets bored. Xom doesn't give invocations, but instead does random things, both good and bad. If he gets bored, he forgets about the good part. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks by a fair bit in the long run - you just need to survive Xom and the game for long enough that the "long run" actually matters.

Death Knight [hybrid-magic][hybrid-invocations]: That's right, two tags. Death knights can be one of two things. One is basically a more martial version of a necromancer (but not too much melee, as you can't wear heavy armour, so it's still risky), while the latter is a more martial version of a priest of Yredelemnul, who can also choose between several weapons. Good class, though I only ever play the Yredelemnul variety (possibly missing out).

CrusaderSkald [hybrid-magic]: CrusadersSkalds are odd. Being casters, they can't afford to use much armour unless it's elven, and rely on their dodging skill to survive combat (elven scale mail or something is, I assume, a godsend for crusadersskalds). Still, they wade right into combat. Your basic spells include berserk rage on demand, regeneration, haste, and some weapon-augmentation. They seem neat, but my crusaders never last long enough for me to find out.

Reaver [hybrid-magic]: Essentially a mix of conjurers and a bit of melee. You pick fire or ice as your starting skill bias/spell book, and go back and forth between melee combat/blowing things up.

Warper [hybrid-magic][magic]: I gave this class two tags because I have no idea. Their spells, barring teleport and blink to an extent, seem to be utterly worthless, and yet they're too weak to survive in melee for that long. I'm at a loss, but people seem to play them and do fine, so I must be missing something.

Wizard [magic]: Highest int and MP, and the lowest strength of all the classes. Wizards start with a book of minor magic, with a bias towards summoning and conjuration. Basically, they're the magical jack of all trades - a bit of every kind of magic available. I've only played one, but intend to try more eventually.

Conjurer [magic]: Conjurers have a few interesting spells that can be used very tactically and carefully - more so if you chose frost over fire as your starting bias. For the most part, however, this is the class to choose if you think spells exist for the express purpose of blowing things up. Quite good fun, and effective too, though like all casters, they struggle in the early game.

Enchanter [magic]: Fonts of neverending subtlety. Enchanters have some buffs, a handful of debuffs (slow and corona, the latter of which makes things easier to hit, come to mind). They can also put things to sleep, turn invisible and so forth, meaning they're a sort of stealth-magic hybrid. Interesting to play, if a tad tricky.

Summoner [magic]: You summon mooks to fight for you. Small mammals, then snakes and imps, followed by ice beasts, occasionally-hostile scorpions, powerful demons, and so forth. Bit hard to play, especially as anything killed by someone else only gives 50% XP, but decent all the same. Summoned creatures improve, both in quality and quantity, with your skill, so that's nice.

Necromancer [magic]: Some oddball blasting, a couple transformations to others and yourself and... who am I kidding? Yes, you can raise legions of the dead to do your bidding. They're frighteningly ineffective and hard to raise at first, though, so grit your teeth and play a subpar blaster for a little while. It gets better.

Transmuter [hybrid-magic]: A very strange class. Transmuters make use of a good deal of unarmed combat, but that's not the odd part. You can distill harmful potions from corpses, and also toss potions to create clouds with various effects (most commonly steam, poison or confusion). These are the basics. You can also transform yourself - you want to be a frost giant, a walking statue, a giant spider, a dragon, or a transmuter with swords for hands? That can be arranged. Unfortunately, they have a slow and bumpy start.

Air Elementalist [magic]: One of the four elementalists, who do not combine to form anyone at all. Like all elementalists, they branch out a bit into conjuration, and have lots of varied spells - blasting, confusion clouds, haste, resistance to ranged attacks, and so forth. While your blasting may be a tad lacking in the midgame, they're solid otherwise.

Earth Elementalist [magic]: As their basic blasting spell requires that you hold a stone to be at all effective, I never survived too long with these. What I have seen suggests that they branch out into lots of other stuff, however, including some damage, self-buffing, a bit of summoning, and blowing up anything that dares to look wall-like. Again, I have never played one that lasted for long.

Ice Elementalist [magic]: These are fun once they get started. You have a melee-range blasting spell, a few for somewhat longer ranges, and a bunch of other things, such as putting people to sleep, armouring yourself reasonably heavily through a spell (another spell gives a shield), a little summoning, and so forth. Interesting class.

Fire Elementalist [magic]: Sorry, did all that subtlety confuse you? Fire elementalists are like fire conjurers with a somewhat different set of spells. Primarily, however, aside from a quick foray into transmutation, you blast things. The conjuration practice you're getting on the side will allow you to learn some other spells too - do this quickly, so you have something against fire-resistant enemies.

Venom Mage [magic]: Poison. So much poison. You have the requisite confusion cloud spell, lots of poison-based blasting, transforming into a spider, summoning scorpions, curing poison, poisoning your weapon, and so forth. Conjuration practice will allow you to get something to combat poison-resistant enemies (some normal enemies, and any undead/demons) with. Until then, a late/midgame poison spell, Poison Arrow, ignores poison resistance. Still, you're basically an unusual blaster, with this class.

Stalker [hybrid-magic]: In this case, once again, it's more of a stealth-magic hybrid. Stalkers, in a nutshell, are this - a watered down assassin and a watered down venom mage mashed together, with a few new spells given to help out in combat. Rather like the buff spells crusaders get, if only in style - these are spells unique to a single spellbook, which Stalkers start with.

Assassin [stealth]: Been wondering when I'd use the stealth tag? Here and one other place. Assassins are very good at stealth (you have to be for the skill to be anything but worthless), short blades, dodging and stabbing - the latter being the art of sneak attacks. Still a tad hard to play, as stealth doesn't seem to work nearly as often as it should. You also get a blowgun, some poisoned needles, some curare needles (super-poison, with a slow effect attached) and a decent amount of skill with them.

Hunter [combat]: Another odd specialist class. Basically, hunters use ranged weapons. Slings, darts, crossbows, bows, whatever. They're not picky, as long as it's a weapon that hits things from a long way off. Often, you have a melee weapon too, and maybe even a bit of skill in it. Skill-wise, however, hunters are very focused: My centaur hunters tend to start with skill in fighting, bows and nothing else. Still, if you want ranged weapons, this is the class to go to.

Artificer [misc]: Yes, the misc tag exists for artificers, and another class that's only meant to make the game more difficult. Artificers can fight, if necessary, but not particularly well. At least, their starting skills don't cover it. In practice, all they're really good at is evocations, and they get to start with a pair of wands. I can't imagine this class working too well with anything but a deep dwarf, but it could be good then.

Thief [stealth]: Nerfed assassins, one of two challenge classes. Your skills and HP are weaker, and you don't get a blowgun. You get a tiny hand crossbow and some skill with it instead or, if you're a spriggan, some evocaton skill and a rod of striking (rods being rechargeable spell-using items) instead.

Wanderer [misc]: Random stat distribution. You also get lots of ranks in skills... but said skills are chosen randomly from all the skills in the game. So you may, for instance, get stabbing without stealth, invocations with no starting god, or conjuration without spellcasting or a spellbook. Pick this class if you hate me. A lot.

I will leave my starting class/species combo up to you guys, because it makes for entertaining (if incredibly awful) characters, and will include you in making major decisions (What god to worship, which runes to get, etc.)
Let the games begin, and don't expect me to be terribly good, I've only been rigorously playing Crawl for a few weeks, and also, have fun.

Lot of the class things are outdated now, sadly. Just thought I'd point that out.

Like how they completely gutted the (noun) knight classes.

Anyway Felid berserker go.

And so begins the saga of KittenMitten, Felid of Trog

Here goes nothing
http://i.imgur.com/bMrTM.jpg
KittenMitten's first enemy. How will our intrepid adventurer fare when faced with a mighty hobgoblin? Well, as it turns out, he hits him so hard his corpse vaporizes, leaving no trace of his existence but a blood-smeared floor. A good omen. What follows is the standard slice and dice, or scratch and bite, as it were, sneaking up on enemies, violently ripping them to shreds, then eating their fresh corpses, like Casualty, the hero of legend.
http://i.imgur.com/0w3vV.jpg
What's this, a crazy old hermit sleeping in a cave, blissfully unaware of KittenMitten's presence? Perhaps I can sneak up on him befo-
http://i.imgur.com/Pd2am.jpg
Oh, bollocks. However will our precocious Felid friend survive this encounter with a chaotic old gnoll?
http://i.imgur.com/dIuUD.jpg
Perhaps a handful of DIVINE RAGE will help?
http://i.imgur.com/gnHbz.jpg
Poor old fellow never stood a chance. And the valorous KittenMitten gains both a fourth level, and an extra life, should he be so unfortunate in the future as to need it. Yiuf is summarily butchered and eaten, in the most heroic of fashions. ONWARD!
http://i.imgur.com/Pc0ja.jpg
What's this? A congregation of gnolls? On only the third level? Preposterous.
http://i.imgur.com/k6axE.jpg
Well, that sorted them out, now to offer their bodies to the great and angry TROGDORTrog, for some extra piety, netting KittenMitten the Trog's Hand ability, to better deal with filthy spellcasters. Onward.

Oh, goddamn it.

And here lies the first episode of User Feedback, Terrence is one of my least favorite uniques, having the tendency to carry nasty wands that will send charred chunks of hero flying everywhere, should he have the forethought to use them.
I have 3 options:
a) Try to sneak up on him and murder his ass before he can disintegrate me
b) Cast Trog's Hand, then berserk him to bits before he can disintegrate me
c) Run like a little bitch, before he can disintegrate me
I leave the decision in your capable(if sadistic) hands

Spoiler: Felid berserkers are actually pretty great for a while.

Anyway, I suggest option b. Barring a really nasty wand or bad luck, Terence ought to be trivial.

I suggest photobucket, batch upload with resizing. But yeah, that'd require a paid account, if you want LP-sized bandwidth.

Sorry if that came across as harsh, I know screenshotting/uploading things properly is quite a pain.

You know, I'm not surprised Xom doesn't have more followers, if this is where he build his altars. A muddy isle surrounded by a ring of lava, with a generous helping of noxious gas.

what the hell? Terrence and Pikel on the same floor? The RNG heard me being optimistic about KittenMitten's chances earlier, didn't it? Well, I guess it's berserking time
http://i.imgur.com/ThtW4.jpg
Berserking quickly became running for my life. That electric whip is nasty. Time to regroup and tackle this from a different angle.

Specifically, a narrow corridor+Trog's Hand+Berserk angle. Defeating Pikel gains me two levels, to 7, and another extra life, bringing my total lives to 3.

Seriously? Another unique? and Sigmund to boot. Just goes to show what optimism will get you.

He quickly falls under the onslaught of a berserk cat, but not before permanently welding my useless ring to my paw. Great. The RNG officially hates me.

Only in Crawl is having stupid-strong enemies chucked at you on the 4th floor a good thing. But yeah, I've never hit level 8 before floor 6 or 7 before. Berserkers make mincemeat of uniques, but large groups of moderately powerful enemies, like Orc raiding parties, will destroy them. Pikel's slaves nearly killed me, I nearly died running away, even with Trog's Hand healing me.

Not terrible, I suppose. It's quaffin' time. Thank Orc Jesus I already have potions of healingcuring ID'd.

It it helps, speaking from experience, most of those artifacts were probably terribad. The best thing you saw was, most likely, the +2/+1 protection hammer.

On a non-helping note, guess what Trog gives you when you get maxed piety? It's not not magical/artifact weapons.

Felids, being cats, get extra lives every few levels, capped at 9. If you die, you respawn somewhere safe on the level. Pretty useful for Zerkers, but if you're a caster you usually respawn, just to be killed by the same thing that just killed you, because Felid wizards are very squishy, because they can't wear any armor.

Maces are mediocre at best, and that artifact dagger was terribad. Don't get fooled by artifacts, most of the time a non-randart weapon of a better type (like Demon Whips or Eveningstars) are much better, unless you are a caster and find a randart with crazy resistances on it (once i bought a 1500 gold artifact bardiche just to have a source of rElec in Zot).

Anyway, eat those mutagenous chunks, it will be fun, you'll see.

Cogwheel

...Yeah, back up and take another staircase. The centaur is bad. The bees? Certain death. Troll regen is a poor man's poison resistance; using Trog's Hand for this is basically suicide.

Here lies the entrance to the lair, suicide for anything without poison resistance, so I'm giving it a wide berth for now.
http://i.imgur.com/kxfis.jpg
And here is our 57th unique of the LP, Dowan, a squishy blaster, and one half of the elf twins. Dowan I can take down with Trog's Hand giving me MR, but as soon as I kill Dowan, his sister Duvessa will fly into a rage when she sees me, and she might actually put up a fight.

So, do I commit geminicide, or go back up to D8 and explore some more, then kill the elf twins? Either way, elven heads will roll.

Cogwheel
2012-02-29, 09:22 AM
Caution outweighs even the wanton slaughter of elves. Try D8 first. Just steer clear of the bees.

Oh, and the Lair isn't too bad, at least initially, without poison resistance. The branches that go from it all require poison resist (snake pits/swamp) or not going there (slime pits/shoals), but the lair is mostly doable without. Just be careful around the big snakes and spiny frogs, pack a couple healing potions and you're set. Not yet, though. Will need more levels, at least; spiny frogs can do some nasty damage.

That said, I'd even recommend (for anyone who isn't an orc priest) doing the first couple of lair floors for XP/loot before attempting the orc mines. Orc mines are deceptively awful.

Alge'n
2012-02-29, 09:29 AM
Lair is nowhere near "suicide without poison resistance", if you wait for rPois to do it you can wait a long time. Poison resistance certainly helps (mostly because it allows you to eat the numerous poisonous corpses) but it's absolutely not required, I actually rarely have rPois in Lair (even Snake Pits and the now disappeared Hive can be done without it if you are a bit careful).

The only real dangers for you there will be spiny frogs and black mambas (maybe fire drakes and blink frogs too), the rest you can easily outrun or just plain massacre. Berserk and Brother in Arms should take care of the more difficult enemies.

Good point, I forgot about those. This goes double for a felid: Blink frogs can hit surprisingly hard, and drakes... yeah, breath weapons are a pain. Though personally, I'd watch out for mottled drakes more. Napalm breath.

I kite them all into a nearby corridor, and survive, albeit minus a heal wounds potion. I go into the room they were guarding, and what do I see but

The most dangerous facet of mummies is their capacity to curse your equipment, which, being a Felid, doesn't worry me overmuch. Sounds ok otherwise but manual mode would probably be more optimal, automatic mode is making you put a lot of xp in dodging which could be better spent in unarmed combat. Also your stealth get a ridiculously low share of xp.

Holy ****, I was wondering how all those Gnolls kept hitting me before I could rip their faces off. This seems incredibly unbalanced. Polearms were already the only endgame weapon worth getting, and now they automatically can hit from 2 tiles away? Jesus. Anyway, Horny the trident-wielding minotaur is in action.

And so we come upon our first major decision of the LP. Do we Worship Nemelex Xobeh for the ability to become essentially, a caster/gladiator hybrid, or do we wait and worship Okawaru/Trog for the Loot/Rage? Keep in mind that I do have the amulet for rage ability, but it's not as good as Trograge, since you don't get rage extensions for kills, and it doesn't work all the time, but that should change as my Evocation skill increases.

No, you can't. Or shouldn't, at least. If you really really want to, see the wiki. (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Cheating)

Do note that end-of-branch levels are MUCH harder that the rest of the branch. You almost always want to visit some other part of the dungeon before tackling the end of the branch you just cleared. If you find yourself resting, using consumables, or kiting a lot every other fight or so, you probably want to go someplace else, gain a few levels and come back later. Discretion, valour, yadda yadda.

I thought copying the whole folder worked, but apparently not? No clue, then.

Anyway, no need for anyone to get too self-righteous and crusade-y. It's a single player game. That means whether or not you learn is irrelevant. If you're having fun, that's good, and the correct way to play. Contrary to popular belief, roguelikes are not, in fact, a religion. No need to take it half as seriously as most people seem to.

Good luck finding the method, anyway. I really have no idea any more.

Unfortunately, the only level 2 spell in my book is sticks to snakes, widely regarded as useless. Didnt realise i should train fighting up for casters for example. Extra HP from fighting will save your squishy mage in lategame from insta deaths like you mentioned earlier for example.

Good news i heard devs wanted to remove victory dance just didnt know they already did it in 0.10.

DoomRL tiles is great. Graphics is now better then in original Doom also they improved background music in tiles version and added mouse support including scrolling mouse look around whole level. Only problems are with minimap which is semitransparent in background and depending on background is sometimes hard to see. Also if you have a Cateye build sensed monsters are off your screen but visible on minimap.

As for game changes think its bit harder then previous version. They made spider mastermind hit harder on melee also shotguns kickback was reduced mostly noticable on longer ranges. Angel of berserk starts without combat knife now but there is one near stairs also i think they lowered number of powerups (berserks, small and large spheres) that spawn in this challenge. Badass has now 2 levels. and they nerfed best advanced assembly gravity boots.

In the new system, incoming XP is automatically diverted to your skills, with each skill having a weight based on how much you use it. There are also two new features in the skill view: You can choose skills to focus on, which doubles their weight, and you can switch to "manual" mode, in which all activated skills have the same weight regardless of how often you use them (focused skills get a double share).

I had max piety at one point, but a trip into the labyrinth took that down a ways. Did net me a nice set of armor and 2 randart rings. One that grants teleport control and fire resist (but cold vulnerability). The other reduces strength and auto-curses, but grants some general resists so I ditched that. The really good find was a Vampiric Demon Whip. Is that a good weapon? It seems to be trouble to unequip and requip since I can't just eat myself to full every time I want to unequip it to butcher a corpse.

Stats don't meaningfully affect melee combat except for transmuters, and demon whips are by acclamation the best one-handed weapons in the game. If you have M&F already (which is unlikely because Ho favor axes) it's a good thing to keep it around, but unless you have animate skeleton (which generates chunks from monster corspes that have skeletons) it's not a good everyday weapon. It really just depends on your character; 2-handed weapons are better in the endgame but if you have shield skill demon whips are probably better until past vault 8.

Anyway, the new ability to strangle people with your snake tail makes nagas surprisingly effective in single combat, and poison resistance is pretty useful. Also I seem to be leveling up surprisingly fast. Did they remove the naga XP penalty or something? But level 2 means evaporate, and with naga poison resistanceimmunity, that means I can blow up poison in my face with no ill effects!

Oh cool, I finally snuck up on someone! And got another level! Wowsers!

On to D2, and infinite possibilities, or possibly horrible death, await.

Ooh, a jaunty feathered cap! I feel resplendent.
http://i.imgur.com/nCMUK.jpg
Well. This sort of puts a damper on my jaunty mood.

Ijyb is sort of annoying early game. I'm fairly certain I can just use the standard Stalker battle strategy, Evaporate a confuse potion and then wade in with my spiffy dagger/tail. But it's up to you lot.

Ijyb should be no trouble. You've got the drop on him, and once confused he should be pretty harmless.

minotaur fighters and naga stalkers by far are the best race/class combinations for me

edit: Nagas get only 20% less exp than humans.

Aww, jesus. Certainly bigger things, but definitely not better.

Grinder is my least favorite unique ever, as he is immune to poison, fast, and above all, he friggin' paralyzes you at a point in the game when that is almost universally fatal. I hate him with the smoldering flame of a thousand burning orphanages. Your choice as to what I do. Evaporate is useless, I have a wand of flame with an uncertain number of charges left, but my best bet is probably to just run(slither) away quickly(or not very quickly, since, you know, nagas). Your choice.

Either avoid Grinder for now or if you got stabing high enough sneak in for an easy kill while hes asleep.

I always strive to be valorous, so I do believe it's time to flee like a small child from my creepy uncle.

Who the hell tried to convince me that Nagas were stealthy?
http://i.imgur.com/QCXpk.jpg
I can't say I didn't see this coming. This is why Grinder is the winner of the annual "Double Barreled **** You" award for most annoying videogame character ever. He beat out Sigmund, because Sigmund isn't poison immune.

Mummy Chaos Knight was it? Why do you hate me so? What should I name the poor undead fellow?

Not sure...I think it means the symbol it will be in the non-tiles version, but I'm not sure.

Lets get this going

http://i.imgur.com/frKCt.png
This is aklhrghk, the deep elf berserker, lets do this

http://i.imgur.com/T9R4L.png
Shortly after starting I find two scrolls and I immediately test them, I hate you RNG

http://i.imgur.com/EFxHk.png
Second room and already four jackals, I know this is going to go well

http://i.imgur.com/XoZ0Q.png
I had to berserk so I wouldn't die so early on

http://i.imgur.com/nlhjK.png
This is getting silly

I had a picture of me finding two rings, but I lost it

http://i.imgur.com/amaWb.png
20 poison needles but no blowgun

http://i.imgur.com/B1M7N.png
two rings and an amulet and still no scroll of identity

http://i.imgur.com/vJXxQ.png
Well I didn't really need that, but thanks anyway RNG

Nothing else really happens so I head down to dlevel two

http://i.imgur.com/DqZt8.png
okay, now I REALLY need a blowgun

http://i.imgur.com/ZOcCm.png
woo level 3

Nothing really happens in dlevel two except for the curare needles and hitting level 3

http://i.imgur.com/myYqv.png
I find a +2 robe and immediately put it on

http://i.imgur.com/2eLsr.png
This is going to suck

http://i.imgur.com/WGk4r.png
Even berserking and I almost died

http://i.imgur.com/fdUvs.png
dlevel 4

http://i.imgur.com/5TGXi.png
OHGOD, should I try to leave before he wakes up and look for a blowgun or try to fight him and most likely die a horrible, but honorable death.

SlyGuyMcFly
2012-03-08, 08:22 PM
Dying is the least heroic and honourable thing.

Oh, and resize the images on your next update, would you kindly.

Ozymandias

I have a question. What do that {=f} on the weapons mean?

It's an inscription that makes it so you don't autoquiver it (which happens with hand axes, spears, and daggers.)

It's automatically put on starting weapons but you can add it to anything.

Last time on "play as an awful class/race combination" I found an ogre and the public said to not fight it

http://i.imgur.com/D4lw2.png
I pick up some darts just in case I need a ranged attack

http://i.imgur.com/XuvKF.png
I decided to try testing the scrolls and potions I have in my inventory, three of them turn out to be mutation potions and I only drank one, the mutations I got were
- half all AC from armor
- +1 AC
because I was wearing a robe (2 AC) nothing has changed

http://i.imgur.com/SWHiO.png
Nothing else on dlevel 4, lets go to 5

http://i.imgur.com/NJzmU.png
I picked up a saber and some poison darts, the RNG must really like me

http://i.imgur.com/csKrG.png
Another ogre in the next room, NEXT

http://i.imgur.com/2KgOC.png
I didn't take a screenshot of how this happened, but pretty much I found a room with a few orcs and an orc priest, I ran away to a narrow hallway and berserked when the first orc showed up

http://i.imgur.com/XbLCV.png
And on the last orc my berserk wears off and I die

Well I survived much longer than I expected

Suprisingly good run with deep elf berserker. Try Tengu air elementalist next.

Checked the morgue file too. you dont have to clear whole branches at once. because branch end (orc 4, swamp 5, lair 8, shoals 5, vault 8, elf 5) are always much harder then the rest come back later when you finished exploring main branch deeper or easier parts of other branches.

Funny how yesterday I played a tengu air elementalist and only died because I tried fighting an air elemental for some reason

Well my first attempt went nowhere and wasn't the least bit interesting except me finding a staff of energy so I'll be trying again later.

Well I got both soul caliber 5 AND persona 4 both in the mail at the same time, so don't expect any updates from me for a while.

Found a +6 Ring of Intelligence on D:3 with an Octopode Wizard.

I expect to die horribly for this outrage. Most likely the same way my last promising Octopode Wizard did; equipping a cursed giant shield and not having any remove curse scrolls.

Yay 99% failure rate Magic Dart >.>

Edit: Yep, death by Sigmund.

I know some horrible luck is coming my way. I am playing a Hill Orc Gladiator and I found a ring of wizardy and the Necronomicon. I have a feeling this is not going to end well. On the useful side, I found randart armor that is +3 scale with +int and dex modifiers.

Are you kidding? This is great news! If the game keeps throwing powerful yet completely useless stuff at you you're in for a real cakewalk!

Ah, it's not a randart. I ran across a -11 with some other negative stat on it in a shop. Needless to say I passed on it.

Also Mara is a jerk. I almost had him dead and then he clones himself and makes a player ghost out of me. I couldn't even run away. Well I'm getting further in the game. Sooner or later I'll get some of the macguffins you need to win the game.

Mara belongs squarely in the "run first" group of uniques. Even if you're totally prepared for him, he can still ruin your day.

As for Big Bird, it would have been helpful to see which gods were available in the temple, but I'll vote for Ashenzari or Vehumet.

Actualy if you are prepared Mara is in piece of cake group. Especialy for melee just equip a bread or other peace of food and remove your armor if you are too resistant against weapon brand you have. Even if mara make clone of you with armor still on it will be just very hard to kill target that does almost no damage. After Mara clones you equip your weapon and kill him. Caster is bit trickier even without weapon or armor your copy still can cast your spells but in older versions your copy casted mostly the first spell on your list. Which is why i often had summon butterflies first in list. Hostile butterflies dont scare me.

I'll vote for Ashenzari never seen her in actrion yet. :)

You left out the part where he creates two clones of himself and then all three of them blink around casting pain and bolt of fire at you. When you do get his health low, he can teleport away and heal up.

If we have any pros taking note of this thread can somebody give me advice on an endgame character? I've been running an OpFE recently that I'd like to clear the endgame with, but I've run out of places that seem safe to tread without an amulet of rMUT or potions of cure mutation (neither has generated in this game). Do you think that I can attempt the Slime Pits without rCorr (also not generated)? Will Firestorm see me through?

Here's my here's a dump of my stuff.

Random advice about the character is also apreciated!

In earlier versions slime pits could be possible with your char what you need is few wands of digging + recharge scrolls for them or dig spell. take off every non art armors, weapons and replace them with non cursed crap versions so your highly enchanted ones they dont get corroded.

Slime pit walls are acidic and will damage you hard unless you have rCorr but if you have wand of digging or dig spell this shouldnt be a problem. Most of jellys/eyes are quite squishy and none of them resist fire most will die instantly by firestorm including all dangerous paralysing, draining, mutating eyes only acid blobs have enough hp to survive a turn or 2. You should be safe if you take it slow. Create 3 tiles wide passages between stairs. Last level is big wide cave full of jellys be carefull not to get surounded by them. you need digging only to get the loot here. beware of Royal jelly he is in middle of level between vaults. Hes very fast high hp and damaging him causes more jellys spawn around him. Chei followers can kill him in 1-2 slouches. Pollymorph him into something else as this not only stops him from spawning jellys but also slows him or try to hit and run with firestorm and blink as he can regenerate only from eating items/ammo.
After his death loot vaults walls become transparent/diggable.

I went through slime pits as a DeFE without much problem... as they say, kill it with fire. And if that don't work, use more fire. Don't think I had an amulet of resist corrosion either, but I had a randart robe so that was OK.
It's pretty hilarious when you cast fire storm on the royal jelly, which summons a bunch of jellies then kills them in the same turn.

So I just went in there and burned em all. I think I only saw one golden eye in the whole place and nothing even tried to polymorph me so everything went very well, although I found nothing in the big loot rooms in Slime:6.

I then decided that pan was my next step and found Lom Lobon and Gloorx Vloq in the first 5ish levels which was awesome except for the fact that I got dumped on top of both pan lords upon entering the levels. That's what my 3(!) wands of teleport are for anyways. Now I'm on the new holy pan level that I hear has a bunch of cure mutation potions that I am itching to get my hands on. Has anyone seen this level before or am I treading new ground?

edit: damn! I accidentally left my only source of SInv on the holy pan level like an idiot and then ran into and died to an invisible foe after being brought low by a random pan lord and a tormenting fiend. The lesson here is never drop something you absolutely can't live without even just for inventory management.

Not me for sure. was in pandemonium only once and it didnt end up well. Also earlier versions had special levels for Lom Lobon, gloorx vloq, cerebov and mnoleg so they were never together. If you are in pandemonium does it mean your going for all runes win?

Since everyone seems to be doing it, I'm doing a playthrough of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. I'll be using a Demonspawn Necromancer, and will probably die 4 floors in. :smallannoyed:
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m638/Supergan3/DCSSDemonspawnNecrmancer1.jpg
And I start out in the center of a square spiral with lots of doors. I love structures like these in this game - they show that this dungeon is far from completely natural.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m638/Supergan3/DCSSDemonspawnNecromancer2.jpg
Pretty uneventful first floor. Moving on.

(Note - in between the 2nd picture and the 3rd, I reached level 2 and gained my first demonspawn mutation (the ColdResistance+ one), but I forgot to take a picture.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m638/Supergan3/DCSSDemonspawnNecromancer3.jpg
And I find an altar to YI'mtoolazytolookthisgod'snameup, the god of necromancy - minus the magic.

Do you think I should go with this god, or would it be redundant?

I was going for an all rune victory. Cerebov and co. have their own separate levels. I was trying to convey the fact that I found them quickly as I have heard stories and seen the reality of searching upwards of 50 levels for all the pan runes.

So, it didn't happen in my demonspawn game, but this was too awesome to not post. Before the below picture was taken, I had to use a scroll to escape from grinder because of that pain spell. A short time later, I run into him again and this happens:

I have a newfound love for Call Imp.

It's definitely a good spell if you get a white imp or an iron imp or a shadow imp (gogo poor man's animate dead!), but do note that the crimson imps are just one step above summoned butterflies. You usually have to spam it to get much use out of the spell.
