Our theme this month is...
Pow! Bam! KAZAM!
Comics! Comics, superhero comics, sunday newspaper comics, graphic novels, webcomics, manga! OOTS characters in a comic world, comic book characters in the OOTS world!

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best character (Any creation 120x120. Please do not submit "large versions". The avatar must be able to stand on its own.)
Best OOTS Comic (Any OOTS-based creation, even if it's not avatar-sized.)
Best Panel (Anything non-OOTS based larger than the above.)
Best Scene (Anything full scene, generally larger than the above.
Best Rookie (only applicable to those who have never won a prize in any of these competitions before)

And, of course, the Best Overall award.

And as an extra, The Ruki's Choice Award, which I will give to whatever entry I personally like the most from any category. My opinion matters, dammit.

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by April 1st, 2012. at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you're entering in. Additionally, if you've never won anything in a previous contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry".

3. Every entry must include an italic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Panel
The gods-blessed Ruk-man

4. All entries may be submitted ONCE and for ONE single category. Exceptions to this include: Best Rookie Entries will be submitted for both categories, and all entries are contestants for the Best Overall and Ruki's Choice awards by default.
4.b. Another exception, when submitting a large scene, it is allowed to submit one single character from the scene as an Avatar. For example: If you submit a large comic, you may submit the character used for that comic separately.

5. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

6. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

7. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

8. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

9. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.

10. You are allowed to enter any artwork created before the contest, but you are limited to two pre-made entries per category. There is no limit for entries made for the contest. This rule still requires you to adhere to rule 5.

11. You may not submit entries made by character creators or similar automated artwork-maker thingies.

Good luck!

That's just it; are all of those legible? Is it anything that's been in that form before? It just seems very open ended that's all.

Pretty much, yeah. All of those, any crossover of those... ideally stuff that was originally in comic format, not adapted to comic format later.

For instance,

Allowed|Not Allowed
Watchmen (Originally Graphic Novel)|Star Wars (Originally Movie, later adapted to comics and graphic novels)
Peanuts (Originally Comic)|Discworld (Originally book, later adapted to graphic novel)
Yotsuba (Only Manga)|Madoka (Originally anime, later had Manga adaptation)
Calvin and Hobbes (Only Comic)|Rugrats (Originally Nickelodeon cartoon, later adapted to comics)
X-Men (Originally Comic)|

What does the "Best Scene" category mean? Does it mean anything that consists of more than one panel?

A scene consists of multiple panels, so yeah, most likely. :smallwink:

That being said... fufufufu~ :smallamused:

I would like to enter this one, please

Rules clarification: I'm intending to do a big series of things. I was thinking I'd enter them as Best Scene, but each section would probably fit under Panel - distinctly, not just like if I made a big comic and then broke it apart and entered each part separately; they'd each be stand-alone. Can I enter it under both?
Might be easier just to wait 'til it's all done to answer that, actually...

Out of curiosity, not being a major graphic novel reader, would a webcomic like the "Adventures of Dr. McNinja" make a suitable frame of reference for an entry? What about more esoteric, less well-known comics like Steve Purcell's "Sam & Max: Freelance Police" (considering the comic existed well before the video game, TV show, etc.)?

I.... really don't know. I mean... if you do a couple panels that form part of a bigger story or sequence you could submit them as individual works, but if you do like ten of them that clearly don't work alone, then no, they're a single scene.

.....so yeah, it might be best to make them and we can decide afterwards. They're bound to fit into one of the categories anyway, so none of them would be wasted.

Wouldn't do any good. You can usually tell how much participation a contest will have based on the first few days. If this contest went on for another month, it would still have very low participation.

Does anyone know why are there so few entries lately?

Beats me. I've tried making more specific themes, I've tried broader themes, more categories, less categories, categories based on content, categories based on size or type, remaking older successful contests... If you can figure it out, I'm all ears.

Serpentine
2012-03-28, 10:57 AM
Well... I'd quite like an extension on this one <.< But that's entirely selfish, and if it was extended anyone could be pretty justified in accusing me of having an unfair advantage or somesuch.
I don't understand why the contests have been so flat, either. Maybe it's just that interest in oots-style art has waned?

No. there are plenty of artists. most of them are either makeing fancomics or avatars and are too busy to draw somthing real.

Also Vorpal, since hes gone less people are particapating.

I have another idea or two I might be able to make if there was more time. No idea why more people aren't participating. I only started doing so recently, so wasn't around for the massive threads of the past.

Probably related: Interest in Avatar Theme Weeks is way down too.

Domochevsky
2012-03-28, 11:44 AM
Isn't this month finals for university and school and such too? (Judging by how busy AJ is.) For myself, i'm somewhat busy as well with drawing other things, which is kind of a bummer as this topic is relevant to my interests. (Also, i'm still somewhat confused as to what exactly i can enter here.)

So i'd kinda say this is a combination of multiple factors all coming down this month all over the forum. :/

Serpentine

No. there are plenty of artists. most of them are either makeing fancomics or avatars and are too busy to draw somthing real.Fancomics are another, very distracting, beast - doesn't negate my point. Avatars are quick and easy, and particularly in the case of the Request an Avatar thread are accompanied by detailed information (i.e. you don't have to go to the effort of coming up with your own ideas). Also doesn't negate my point - being, I think maybe interest in this sort of art has bottomed out and/or moved on to other things. I don't know how to fix it, it may just be that it'll eventually start to pick up again. Fluctuation and all that jazz.

Hmmm... I could consider trying to synchronize with avatar theme weeks a little, but I'm reluctant to do so, for several reasons. The first one being that avatar theme weeks don't work on a monthly basis.

Sorry I haven't done anything for this one yet. I've been pre-occupied with mini-meets, visiting my gf in Denmark, SWTOR comic strips, reworking my avvie for Infernal Week and a TOP SECRET SPECIAL PROJECT I'm engaged in with another avatarist.

I promise I'll have a look at doing something this weekend, even if it's only a basic superhero avatar. I'm also trying to get used to Adobe Illustrator in place of Inkscape.

It's probably not the change of reins. The fact that interest has waned during/after Haruki started running these does not imply causation. The change of who ran these has happened before.

It could be argued that many of the avatars in past contests were premade, but just as many weren't.

I know for me I usually make only one or two entries these days if an idea strikes my fancy, so maybe others are doing that? Only doing themes that give them ideas? But as it's been stated: specific, broad, and repeats of themes have all been done.

If anyone had the time, it'd be nice to plot how many entries and/or contestants have been in each contest plotted against time. Then we could see if it has anything to do with the month. Or it could be plotted by specific vs. broad themes.
