Reading over a dread necromancer and I realised that it can be a very good focused class, but still a good variety class. It's pinnacle ability is at 8th (Undead mastery for those that haven't read it in heroes of horror), so we shall talk about it to the 8th level.

With it's DR 2, becoming a necropolitan at 3rd and access to 1 martial weapon. It can be a good melee class, to a certain extent.

It's spell list is reasonable, Can be easily outfitted with a few items and can be accessed spontaneously. This makes it a moderate caster.

But having the best of both worlds is a starve of feats...

But what would you go for in your build up to a dread necro's 8th level ability? Focus or be diverse? Just pick up corpsecrafter feats?

I've been reading everything I can scrounge up and no one has any direction pointers except

"Take tomb tainted soul"

which is a given. Playgrounds! WHERE DO I TURN MY ATTENTION!

I am actually playing a melee dread necromancer right now. Try this build (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Melee_Specialized_Dread_Necromancer_(3.5e_Optimize d_Character_Build)) I made.

One of the good prestiges is pale master from Tome and Blood!

At 6th level of the prestige, you remove your arm and replace with an undead graft for a small bonus and some attacks.

My plan is to kill some bad ass mother *£^$er and take his arm.
because that's how I roll.

Any ideas for a evil, medium, nasty and strong thing's arm I can take?

Like a lich?

Get Versatile Spellcaster from Races of the Dragon, and any one of Heighten Spell, Sanctum Spell, or a Bloodline feat in Dragon Compendium. This gives you early access to the next higher level of spells on the DN spell list. Magical Training (PGtF) gives you a spellbook which you've already put several spells into, so as long as you can make the Spellcraft check you could add more spells to it. Versatile Spellcaster says when using it you can cast any spell you know of a particular level, so you could learn and spontaneously cast Wizard spells for a cost of two feats. Someone is sure to show up arguing RAW about not being able to add more spells to that spellbook, but it's ultimately up to your DM to decide.

Start with a race that can take the feat Magic in the Blood (PGtF), go Necropolitan, and obtain the Spellstitched template from Complete Arcane. You'll have a pool of 4 daily uses to assign two spells of a given level, so make one usable 3/day and the other 1/day. Magic in the Blood will convert that 1/day into 3/day for you. Two of your Spellstitched spell-like abilities should definitely be Desecrate and Animate Dead, so you can use them without a costly material component.

There's a newer Dread Necro handbook on these boards, that takes some issue with some of K's points. YMMV as to which is more accurate.
