I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet

sadly, he won't enrich the world of printed paper with his art any longer (http://news.yahoo.com/comic-book-artist-moebius-dies-182107216.html)

Never heard of him before but he sounds like he did some pretty good stuff. I mean it says he was 73 so it's not like he tragically died young. Still it's a pity when any talented person dies (or an untalented one for that matter I guess).

Can you reccomend any particular works that really show off what he could do?

I liked the Lt. Blueberry character..your Pale Rider kind of Western hero, with a few major twists to it.
if you're into Marvel comics I'm told he did some remarkable work on Silver Surfer together with Stan Lee
also, Airtight Garage..pretty surreal sci fi.

he was also heavily involved in designing sets and costumes for the movies Tron and Willow and did some work on Alien too.

He did tons of stuff for Heavy Metal. I'll miss him, his art was kind of a staple of my childhood.

I have a comic about him (The one about half native american soldier, racist colonel, and mexican indians scapegoating Apache tribes part). Unfortunately, my book was ripped and I wanted to know what happened after the attack on the fort when the racist commander try to ambush the apaches during the parley.

Here's a decent article from io9 (http://io9.com/5892148/legendary-french-artist-moebius-the-man-who-made-the-abyss-alien-and-tron-even-weirder-is-dead-at-73). Pretty pictures included (in the comments, too).

If you appreciate comics as an art form and/or you're into science fiction, I assure you this is a HUGE loss, even if you've never heard his name.

Apart from the obvious impact of his comics (Blueberry, Arzach, Incal) and the films he worked on (Alien, Tron, The Fifth Element), a very large number of artists worshiped him and have been influenced by him one way or another. Artists from America, Europe, Japan (his friendship with Hayao Miyazaki was legendary).

He was one of the iconic artists of Métal Hurlant, a French sci-fi magazine which in turn spawned the American Heavy Metal magazine, which in turn pretty much defined the aesthetics of modern science fiction. Both with European artists like Moebius himself, and with American artists like Richard Corben.

Really, it's a huge loss.

OK that image is simply beautiful, no other way to describe it.

Reading that article and some on other sites I get a better idea of who he was and why he was important. I just ordered a copy of Incal to check out his work better.

Thanks for making this thread, it's bad news and all but you've helped at least one person discover his works.

I suppose that's the best thing to take away from the occasion.
very interesting documentary, headlessmermaid.. I don't know how I could have missed the obvious connection between blade runner and moebius
