Hey there. A friend of mine wants a custom spell for an upcoming game I'm going to run. The spell creates a pit with an area of 5 x 10, with a depth of 10 feet, with one of the short edges having a tombstone. What level of spell should that be?

Well, at a glance, it seems to be somewhere in effect between Stone Shape and Move Earth. Depending if it affects hard substances like stone or not, and how long the casting time is, I'd guesstimate it falls somewhere between 3rd and 5th...

I can think of a first level Pathfinder spell with a similar effect:

So I'd say 2nd level at most.

I think that might be a bit much. It's not a particularly flexible spell. Assuming it allowed a reflex save to avoid it, I'd say it'd be 2nd level and if you really wanted to be cautious 3rd level.

How long is the duration? Perm? There's a PF spell that lasts 1 round +1 round per level, but it gets deeper with every other level as well and it's the same length on both sides.

Create Pit (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/c/create-pit)

That's 2nd level... so considering the other PF spell mentioned before, and the effects of Create Pit. I'd put something like that at level 2 if it's a perm effect, level 1 if it has a duration in rounds.

Though if you an get the coffin in before the duration is up, that's an awesomely quick way to bury a body lol.
