View Full Version : Terra Chao [Kong FFd6]

The year is 680 H.L.E., the kingdoms of Terra Chao have come to a temporary cease of outright conflict; a momentary pause in the endless skirmishing and landwaring the nations have inflicted upon one another since their foundings so many hundreds of years ago.
Many salvage companies in the human empire of Pleros and its surrounding lands have recently been contracted en masse to recover parts for military Gears; the Bronze Arms had recently suffered heavy losses in a conflict with Leosraum, severely crippling the military strength of the budding human empire.
Regardless of one's moral standing on the matter, uncovering these war machines pays very well and the open bounty on parts for the common PX-MGI-II is most salvage companies' bread and butter in the current age. More rare components are like diamonds in the rough, handsome rewards await brave salvage crews in the Wastes.

Garun had recently heard rumor in the local tavern of rare Gears components being found in the Valley of No Winds, a short few days' travel northwest of Heiran and the Pleran fortress Owl's Vigil. Having been muscled out of old territories by larger salvage companies it seemed a fairly safe gamble.
Thus we find our heroes on their way to the Valley of No Winds, a day's travel left ahead of them. The sun beats down over the long days in the Wastes, scorching the rocky desert grounds and sweating all living things dry.
If you pushed yourselves and marched forward without rest you could arrive in the valley by nightfall, the natural walls providing some sense of security rare to find in the Wastes. Doing so may attract the attention of bandits, other salvage companies, and the monstrous inhabitants of the Wastes...is it worth the risk?

Since you're a salvage company you should definitely own something to transport recovered Gears and such and a place to store such wonders and perform work on them. So, I grant the party a building in Heiran, the tools to put Gears together (in the same building), two horses, and a small cart which can carry up to one full small Gear and a small cargo of other items.

Remembering an old tale about a traveler collapsing from a "desert fever" due to overexertion, Marat recommends to the group to pace themselves. "Hurrying ahead wouldn't be good for our health. We should find somewhere to rest."

Marat's text color will be dark green, as you can see. Also, first! :D

P.S. I had to type this twice because GitP bugged when I submitted the first time. Lovely.

"I commend you for your patience, Marat. A respite would be most advisable. The Yorukh were not meant for such nomadic activity, and I can only fight my heritage for so long. Garun, grab the foot elixir, would you? My hooves are worn to the marrow!" Yakkehty normally walked alongside the cart, dragging a toboggan holding his tools. He relieved himself of the leather straps and sat down heavily, inspecting his feet closely. "I think I might have picked up a thistle-bug along the way. Disdainful critters..."

Hope I'm not stepping out of bounds with the sled. A question on Yorukh biology: How do their legs and feet work? Are we talking Minotaur or Sasquatch here? Also, dibs on Dark Orchid.

We're talkin' minotaur here.
Essentially, this but a little more China, a little less Mongolia and just a splash of Europe in there.

Garun squints towards the horizon. "If we are to stop here then we should look for some actual shelter, I'd rather push on, but I have the horses the consider also."

Keeping their eyes distant and on the horizon, Marat and Yakkehty look out for the unsavory element. Marat spots nothing, but off in the distance Yakkehty spots a cloud of dust traveling the horizon, a dark shadow in its heart; clear signs of Gears in the distance. Unless they intend to circle the valley it seems unlikely that they should be an issue.

Making use of a nearby tree and some scraps of metal Garun makes simple work of bodging a decent one-night shelter. It's nothing specacular, but it should certainly do for the night.

Yakkehty trotted back to Garun, signaling to Marat. When he reached the makeshift lean-to, he gave it a once-over. "Not bad, not bad at all. Listen, there's some Gears over yonder. They probably won't give us any trouble, but we should still keep wary. I'll take first watch tonight - I'll nudge whoever is snoring the loudest to take second."

The night passes with little issue. A few creatures can be stalking the night off in the distance, but give your camp a wide berth, causing no issue to you. As the moon fades from view and the sun begins to rise in the East you can feel a rare cool breeze blowing past. A momentary surcease of heat is a wonderful refreshment to all.

Clear skies begin this day, and the only life you can see are the occasional birds enjoying their near boundless freedom in the skies. Off in the distance you can see the cliffs surrounding the valley you seek, the vibrant green of the valley's plant life seems almost radiant; rest there should be much more comfortable than hiding away in a lean-to sleeping on the hard ground of the Waste.

I'll need an awareness check on your way to the valley.

As you approach the valley Marat spots a thin, wispy trail of black smoke rising up from deep in the lush forest hidden away in the valley. It rises from deep in the Eastern half of the forest and quickly fades into nothingness, dispersed into the clear skies.

The mouth of the valley glows softly with a warm light of life, the valley within is fertile and filled with all manner of plant life. The smell of fruits and flowers fills your nostrils as you move deeper into the forest. Rumor has it that the valley has parts of Gears all throughout, but the thick greenery makes it difficult to transport anything larger than yourself. The innkeep at the tavern had made mention of some adventurous salvage company finding a great wealth of components in caves along the eastern wall of the valley. Apparently they had also encountered some strange man-like beasts in the depths.

A fork in the beaten path splits to the east and west. To the east the path dips down and seems rather clear. To the west you can hear running water off in the distance and the path slopes ever so slightly upward.

Yeah, after rests sounds right. Kinda like a day-by-day kind of deal.

Heading up the western path you are greeted by the pleasantries of the local birds as several brightly colored thrushes spring out of a thick bush and take to the sky. The warbling of the myriad avian species a beautiful song played in air around you.

After a short trek through the forest, climbing over a felled tree and overcoming a small cliff face you come to a clearing. A serene display of nature's beauty lies before you; a cascade of water flows softly down from higher ground into a small lake of crystal water, a thin river flowing to the east from there, and several deer drinking from the lake stopping momentarily to observe your approach.

Looking around the surrounding area, Garun finds nothing of real value. A few scraps of metal lying about and some fruit that might make good refreshment but without a cooling unit to carry them in there would be no way to get them back to the city.

The deer watch Garun as he looks about.

Yakkehty slowly waded into the lake, walking until the water came to his, um, 'heel'. He did not step any further - he did not want his armor to get wet. "Excuse me, fellow hoofed ones. My, my, aren't you brave? Your kind are normally so skittish..." He bends down and cups some water in his hands, slowly sipping it. "Anything worth picking up, Garun?"

Bonnero

"Well, if we run out of food there is some fruit lying about, as for anything of value, depends how much we'd get for scrap." Garun approaches the herd of deer slowly. "As for these fellows, I don't know of any tame deer in these parts, they're either incredibly used to we bipeds, or have never seen any of our kind before. The fact that they don't consider a giant shiny yak intimidating, suggests to me the former" He thinks to himself, animals are strange, machines are much simpler.

Necro_EX
2012-03-30, 01:36 AM
As the two of you approach the deer two of the three of them suddenly appear very startled and spring into the air, hopping and running to flee the area as swiftly as they might. The third ducks its head swiftly as Garun comes near looking rather shocked suddenly, its slim antlers gleaming in the sunlight as they dart back and forth in the creature's trembling. Its gaze seems to be beyond Garun, its fear seems to come from another source. Something distant, shrouded by the thick forest.

KRRRRRRRRRDSHHHHHH

BBRRRRAAAAAMMM

A heavy sound resonates from the east, shaking the ground, trees, and even the air around you. Branches are left bare, the water flowing from the lake is forced backward momentarily, and that last deer sprints off into the distance after making its profile as low as it could for an instant. The sky goes black with birds above and you are showered with feathers; a rainbow precipitation of down and flight feathers, all manner of hues fall to the ground around your feet. Looking to the east a column of thick, black smoke rises from somewhere deep in the forest.

Whipping around reflexively to look to the east you just barely see three small humanoid creatures rushing toward the clearing you stand in, their oversized heads bobbing back and forth held onto their bodies by thin necks like the stems of cherries.. Before the three of you can react one of the tiny things opens its mouth, revealing a mouthful of dagger-like jagged yellow teeth and a ribbed, purple tongue, to scream, eschewing forth bright yellow saliva as it does so.

The three of them stop and fire their bows, loosing crooked arrows from their crude weapons.

As Yakkehty slides down the cliff, he trips on a root growing out of the wall and tumbles roughly to the ground. This causes the first goblin to miss his intended face-punch. The second goblin, who happens to be the less honorable of the two, went for where it thought the yak-man would be most tender. Due to Yakkehty's new trajectory, this caused him to get a swift uppercut to his weak chin, his Achilles' heel. With a soft grunt, he collapses on the ground, his shield still pulsating with a holy glow and his sword sheathed impotently in its ornate scabbard.

The first one misses and the second one connects. Can monsters perform critical hits? If so, my HP is now -19. If not, my HP is now -1. Either way, lights out for Yakkehty. Shield of Light would enable me to counterattack the second blow, but I'm not sure if it works when I'm incapacitated or how to calculate it. It says it deals 100% M.ARM Holy damage that ignores M.ARM and Shell, but I'm not sure what that means.

In his dazed state, Yakkehty is greeted by a vision of his late master. "Down and out in the first round, old chum? I would have expected better from you. You could likely grasp one of their scrawny necks in just one of your hands!" Yakkehty's eyes rolled into the back of his head, and his spirit jabbed back at the old ghost. "Am I to be blamed for the position of each and every piece of infernal topiary foundation?" The ghost responded mirthfully, "I guess when you stand so far from the ground, you forget to look at your feet! You must work on your awareness, my son, or you'll forget to look out for the downtrodden." The spirit flickered away, and Yakkehty gratefully embraced the cold slumber of unconsciousness.

Resting for some time in the pool allows you to recover from the earlier confrontation and your travel deep into the forest. All the night the forest remains quiet, hardly a sound to be heard over the brook you camp near.

Morning comes with the intense brightness of the sun, shedding its warm glow upon you and all around you acquires that yellow glow of the sun as it creeps over the valley walls.

Your path continues to the northwest, and the column of smoke can still be seen off in the distance to the east.

However, his armor is still damaged - he'll need to take a look at that when he can find some down-time.Not really a game mechanic or anything. Just ponderings."I'd rather get to the job at hand myself, but the smoke does intrigue me. I'd like to think I'm not such a buffoon that I would be ambushed twice by some idiotic green-skinned fiends, so we should be wary of a trap. Perhaps the smoke is from a campfire. There's a possibility that we could find some battle-capable people there who could assist us in case of another attack - safety in numbers and all that. Or an even more dreadful thought...there could be victims. If that is true, than we cannot simply leave them there, especially if there are survivors."

Over the course of hours the path thins out and completely disappears into the green of the forest; the thick undergrowth consuming it like a voracious beast. The column of smoke grows fainter and eventually disappears into the blue sky as you push forward. It seems the further you get from the black smoke the more calm the forest is.

As the sky begins to shift in color with the sun lowering you come across the mouth of a cave in the side of a small cliff.

The cave entrance hums with the gentle winds blowing through as Marat descends into its depths. The path is fairly straightforward, a gently curving vein of emptiness in the ground. The walls of slick with a softly glowing moss or lichen of some undiscernable hue, hard to tell whether they glow blue or green.

After a minute's travel the tunnel opens up into a chamber wherein a small camp site rests. Scattered bones and scraps of cloth and food lie about on the ground around the crudely fashioned spit and tents as well as some chipped and busted tools and a single tunic. Leather and fur bedrolls lie sprawled out around the spit, all evenly spaced and flatly laid except for one that looks as if it had been tossed against the cave wall in frustration.

On the far end of the room is a crude wooden door fastened to a frame of wood in an opening six feet high and three feet wide. Beside this door rests a canoe leaning against the cave wall. Its underside has much of the same moss as the walls, shedding a soft light. The mechanical sounds are subtly louder this deep in the cavern, but still seem distant.

Marat, traveling up the makeshift stairs for a brief moment takes you around a bend in the tunnel. At the end of this bend you are faced with another simple wooden door in a frame of wood set into the stone walls of the cavern. These walls do not reach to the height of the opening they are set into and you can plainly see that they have been battered from within. Cracks run through many of the planks and the top of these walls are splintered outward. The door is in only very slightly better condition, likely due to the two strips of iron bound across it. It seems the door is slightly ajar.

--

Garun, Yakkehty stepping into the cave only so far leaves you in a tunnel barely wide enough for the latter to fit through. You definitely wouldn't be able to swing your sword about in here with ease.

Marat, peering through the gap between the door and the frame it so loosely sits in you see a mostly empty chamber, roughly the size of the chamber you had just been in. There are a few bones and tatters of cloth about the ground and a puddle of some indiscernible liquid on the far end of the chamber. Mounted to the wall you can see three pairs of shackles from where you are. One has been torn from the wall and lies on the ground, its chain resting in the tiny pool of liquid.

--

Garun, Yakkehty, you come to the aforementioned chamber with the tents, spit, and canoe. Looking at the tools and structures in the room it is hard to place the origin of the objects. They seem far too crude to be anything used by the human empire of Pleros or the Leo's kingom of Leosraum. They look similar to the tools employed by the less wealthy folk of Sylvera, but still too crude. It seems unlikely that the savage goblins would have access to some of the metals used in these tools.

Marat: Upon closer inspection, you recognize the fruit as Red Slumber, a fruit that has become exceedingly rare in the days after the cataclysmic event that created the Great Wastes. The Elhwaiin venerated the fruit in ancient times for its hallucinogenic properties and slumber inducing juice.

Inspecting the door you recognize the ancient goddess depicted on as Elsthaa, a goddess of fertility believed to have birthed all the peoples of the world in ancient times, impregnated by the cosmos itself. Among the creatures depicted below her dress you easily spot a tribe of Elhwaiin in garb not worn outside of ceremonies in millenia, a single yeti, lanky four-armed creatures with bulbous heads carrying some sort of ark, and foul serpent folk slithering off to the side. It's only a moment before you notice what looks like a ravaging horde of Grekk spilling out from just below Elsthaa's dress carrying wicked blades and wearing pure malice on their faces.

The red orb in the center of the door continues to emit it's soft light and being this close to it you feel a warmth flow over your body, making you feel comfortable and at home. Sadly, that 7 wouldn't turn up anything. :/

Also, assuming Garun takes a closer look at the orb:

The orb does not seem to react to Garun nor Yakkehty being closer.

Also, giving everyone an experience point because I feel like it.

"So it's only myself...or, maybe..." Marat pulls off the ring he found earlier. "Maybe it's related to this? One of you, put this on and see if the orb starts reacting to you. Or it could just be that I'm an Elhwaiin, but oh well."

Random idea I cooked up somehow. Just roll with it.

Also, woo! +1 XP!

Yakkehty lets out a deep chuckle. "I doubt that that little charm would fit on any of my fingers. Looks like it's up to you, Garun. Good luck!" In the meantime, Yakkehty will look for any booby traps.

"hmm an interesting idea, but who says we need wear it?" Garun stands back from orb, ties the ring to his gun and holds it at arms length towards the orb.
"I can't say my culture goes much for special chambers either. But then my people's culture is the same as those they live around. We're not too fussy about tradition in the least."

Garun shrugs."Hm well it seems we may need to hold it then.". He removes the ring from his gun and holds it in his hand next to the orb.

Marat - You do recall hearing tale of Elhwaiin women using the Red Slumber during the birthing process to ease the pains of childbirth, and this fruit has had a long history with the worship of the goddess Elsthaa. Looking at the orb, it has the same deep shade of red as the fruit.

Marat begins to have an idea. The orb seems to react to me...and the fruit here...oh dear. Marat ponders eating the fruit in the hopes it triggers the door's opening.

Well, let's put my choice in the hands of the dice.
Stupidity (read: INT) check: [roll0]

If that's 6 or lower, Marat takes a bite out of one of the fruit. If it's snake eyes, Marat downs a fruit whole. If it's higher, he puts his idea on hold and asks the others their opinions.

EDIT: ...>_<

Marat picks up a fruit and examines it. Moments later, he downs the whole thing in a matter of seconds.

Marat - Within moments the fruit's effects become very apparent. The room begins to turn on its own ever so slightly offkilter from your own movements and every color becomes so much brighter. This is all shortly replaced by wondrous dreamscapes and joyous music as you slip into a deep slumber.

After mere moments of consuming the fruit whole Marat falls unconscious. As the lithe bard falls into slumber the orb in the door glows with an intense light and a blinding flash is let loose with the screeching of metal on stone.

Leaping forth from beyond the door come two small creatures not unlike those you had previously encountered. These are smaller, more feral beings with mouths pouring out vibrant yellow saliva between the gaps in their long and jagged teeth. Their black eyes filled with pure malice, one lunges at Yakkehty to bite his calf and the other pounces at Garun to dig its fangs into his chest.

wow it's been a long time since we were last involved in combat I've had to read the rules again xD. Still I'm going to use one of the fruits on the blender on my chest, hope that it's not immune to sleep or something. will I need to roll anything for that? technically speaking I'm trying to force feed it the fruit so I guess that would be a strength check? Shoving the fruit in the mouth of the hungry devil instantly puts it to sleep on the ground below, a pool of blood, mucous, and saliva forming around its gaping maw, a sick pattern of sickly yellows and crimson.

Yakkehty barely has time to raise his shield up against the malevolent creature, much less dodge it. Luckily, his armor holds well against the feral onslaught - he is more injured by the stone floor when he falls back in surprise. From this position, he has little choice but to use his hooves to clomp his foe, aiming for where he assumes its brain would be, if the slobbering monstrosity indeed has one.

The monster at Garun's feet lies dormant, snoring loudly.

Peering into the newly opened room, Garun can see metalic glints in the dark room ahead, reflecting the light of the cave-moss. This chamber appears almost perfectly pitch save for the blue-green light poring in from the chamber you currently occupy. In the distance faint, yellow-orange light seeps out from the shadows.

The cold air chills you to the bone as soon as you step over the threshold. Stepping into the dark chamber, you suddenly realize it is larger than it seemed before, it is truly massive, you've seen Gear hangars with lower ceilings. In the distance you hear a familiar sound, something between pistons pumping rhythmically and the squelching of an axe wound.

As you approach the source of the glinting light you see it, too, is much larger than you had thought. Before you lies a Gear, similar in build to the empire's standard, with the entire front of it missing as though it was torn in half.
