Hi guys! I'm playing a cloistered cleric obsessed with knowledge and magic, and I'm trying to design a magical item that will let me carry a variety of books (primarily for fluff reasons) without completely breaking my carry capacity. I want to approach my DM with something that's mostly worked out so I don't have to load him up with yet more work, and he can just give the OK or adjust it as he sees fit.

I came up with "Book Belts": When wrapped around a collection of books, a Book Belt will magically shrink the books to more easily accomodate them into your backpack. Each belt could hold up to twelve books at once.

What I'm wondering is what do you think "book belts" should cost to make?

Appreciate your input!

There's a magical scrollcase in MOE, it's good for carrying 50 scrolls/pages and have an effect like that of Heward's haversack to give you whichever one you were looking for. Sells for an easy 2800g.

Double a Glove of Storing strictly, but that's stupid for the use.

This is really a case of looking at similar items instead of the rules strictly. An extradimensional space only for a limited number of items exists alreddy in the Efficient Quiver at less than 3000 gold. Given this item is purely for fluff (and the quiver has some use mechanically), that's likely the right range.

I'll give you a wild opinion, worth as much as nothing that you paid.

If you specify non-magic books, then this item should be pocket change.

As a wild-stab, I'd put it into the 500-700 gp range as most permanent items don't go lower than that. Personally, I'd drop the belt even lower to the 200-300 gp range. Having no mechanical effect in the game, other than to carry books, it's just not going to be worth much.

That's the caveat: no mechanical effect. Once it does provide a practical effect, its value should be higher.

Interesting, but I don't have access to Magic of Eberron and I think I'd have a hard time getting Eberron content into our PF campaign.

Deux, I looked up some similar items (that they deal with storage or that they change your carry weight), and came up with the following items:

Bag of Holding (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/wondrous-items/a-b/bag-of-holding)

Handy Haversack (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/wondrous-items/a-b/bag-handy-haversack)

Efficient Quiver (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/wondrous-items/e-g/efficient-quiver)

Muleback Cords (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/wondrous-items/m-p/muleback-cords)

Books on average weigh about 2-3 pounds. At maximum capacity a Book Belt removes twelve books, or roughly 36 pounds. In comparison, the Muleback Cords let's a str 10 character carry an extra 200 pounds of gear for 1000 gp.

I'll see if I can have them crafted for 500 gp.

Should have said you were in a Pathfinder game...
