I've recently joined a game that allows for 36 point buy (or 40. it's one of the higher ones I remember, have to check)

That starts off in a drow city; level cap is 14. Any book at all is allowed.

I'm used to playing martial classes and all and I want to try something new tha twould be unique. Any suggestions? I thought of a very young Deep Dragon with a PC class (I THINK they're a ECL 13+1 class for 14) but I'd like something with a dragon-type flavor or lycanthropic.

I was also tinking of an "awakened" animal too. which migh tbe fun (add a template or two...)

Why not go with the Werewolf Lord (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040117a) for your first 7 levels?

And if you're underground, that's the perfect place for a Dark Creature template (Tome of Magic) for a +1 LA.

But to do that you'd need a base race. Though a Dark Drow Werewolf Lord might be sheer awesome. But limited to level 11 (drow +dark=LA +3 then the savage progression of werewolf lord 7.)

but a wolf..underground? I also heard the drow actaully hate and fear lycanthropes of ANY type and try everything in their power to "cure" it.

More input would be useful.

Some starter ideas

Half-Dragon Gish, taking the Dragon Breath feat from Races of the Dragon, and possibly some more Metabreath feats. LA +3
Kobald Sorceror with extended Wings of the Dragon (lasts all day) and the Dragon Breath spell (amongst many others). LA+0
Spirit Shamen retreiving the Bite of the xxxx spells - also a gish

more input huh? What would you like to know. I'm still kind of new at posting on forums like this so sometimes I don't know what to put really.

But if you want info on the setting: Look fo rDrow of the Underdark, the game is based in the city mention/detailed there.

We get a lot of folks who come here and ask for advice about characters, only the're not precise about the character concept they want and its very hard to respond since there are so many options available.

You suggest you want to play a Caster or a Lycanthrope (though you seem unsure about that) or a Dragon.

OK - lets try to narrow this down.
What sort of caster do you want ?

Arcane ?
Divine ?

Gish ?
Buffing/Support ?
Blasting ?
Battlefield Control ?
Illusionist/Mind Control ?
Diviner ?
Trickster ?

Answer: Yes.

Oh, sorry. I got carried away by the thread. Yah, lots of options, sometimes you can pick several, sometimes you can pick one (or two).

The point is, you can be anything and anyone, so if you ask us what is the best for ECL 14, we will all point out our favorite archetypes. If you say "I have an extremely high point buy starting in the Underdark, I want to be a non-Drow caster level 10 (spell level 5) evil divine caster with no higher than a +3 HD+LA" than we can work with it.

Ask DM if he'll let you reflavor the Dragon Born of Bahammeit (I know I miss spelled it.), to suit the setting. Then take that template ontop of as much Con boosting templates as you can get, and either play a Melee'r who uses breath weapons for crowd control and ranged damage, or a none direct damage mage that uses them with quickened breath for direct damage output.

How about a non-drow caster; Divine Blaster.

Divine Blasters are tricky, here are a few

Warmage 5/Rainbow Servant 10 fits the bill, but you are 1 level away at ECL 14. Basically the Rainbow Servant 10th level ability would give you access to all clerical spells and, well Warmage gives you Blasting. Early entry is possible, but a little cheesy.
Druid can work, but your underground so go Spirit Shamen 14.
Marshal 1/Wizard 4/Ur Priest 2/ Mystic Theurge 7. Replace Marshal with any class which gives +2 Fort and has Bluff (Hexblade, Some Dragon Shamen, Paladin of Freedom. No point taking MT beyond 8.
Mystic Ranger 14 with the Sword of the Arcane Order
Wizard 3/Cleric 3/Geomancer 8. Fun, but not strong.
Cleric 14 - just choose the right domains.

If you want interesting but rather simple, try playing an undercover elf wizard (or a Wizard/Eldritch Knight/Abjurant Champion if you want some more power), who constantly live in fear of being discovered.

If you want weirded things, what about a Half-shadowdragon drow warblade. It would be the child of a drow matron and an shapechanged shadowdragon, and you already have a ton of intrigue to dig into :P

Go Dark Killer Gnome. Those are always fun and you'll have the inherent creepiness of the Underdark to work with. Illusionists can have fun in the underdark because of the inherent paranoia you need to be down there. Just the image of the right creature can be as effective as nukeing. And if the fake creature doesn't work, just blast them with semi-real Evocations anyways. Since your high level you can do really well since you don't get any of the annoying low level Wizard problems.

Forget Deep Dragon - play as a Shadow Dragon (Dra). Access to sorc and cleric spells, and a level-drain breath weapon. Mmmmm...

Don't the drow hate like everyone?

I would check out the drow of the underdark book. It has a ton of good items and spells that are useful in the underdark.

Seconding the idea for Shadow Gnome.
Wizard/Master Specialist/Shadowcrafter/Shadowcraft Mage.
Take Heighten Spell, Signature Spell (Silent Image) and go to town.

I've found something I'm really interested in doing but I can't get my head around it. Using the same basis mentioned before

But this time how about a Drow Ur-Priest, master of Shrouds?

But that's a ehavy requirement load:

+3 Fort and +3 Will base saves
some skills
Iron Will & Spell Focus (Evil) for Ur-Priest

And the ability to Rebuke Undead, Spell Focus (Conjuration) and Augment summoning for Master of shrouds.

Now I can dump one or the other but what I have in mind is a drow renegade type that has a seething hatred for all gods thanks to Lolth and her minions. But envies their power.

OR someone who enjoys having a mass of undead shadows at their beck and call.
