So, I'm going to be playing a Dwarven Bard (Because why not? Hah.) in my groups newest DnD game, and the DM has encouraged me to bring my guitar and play it at the table some when needed, like while we are at a tavern etc.

Problem is, I'm having a tough time thinking up songs that I could play! Anyone got any ideas?

So far I've considered,

-The Gael - The Last of the Mohicans theme (It's not particularly Dwarvy, but it fits in the environment/time period, and it's a moving piece!)

-Some of the songs from the classic Hobbit cartoon. (Tip the glasses, crack the plates!)

-An acoustic rendition of Diggy Hole,

-And the Dwarf Fortress song!

That's all I could think of. Heh.

Some say the Balor is dead, the Balor is dead, the Balor is dead
some say the Balor is dead and buried in Lyrabar
more say he rose again, more say he rose again, more say he rose again
And joined the Elvish army

I don't know how playable it would be on guitar, but the song of lonely mountain from the hobbit is pretty epic as well, more appropriate for a dark night on a hill top than in a tavern, but very dwarven, and this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEAaos1zuBk) might not be bad, if you could get a guitar to it.

Heck yeah. It seems so simple when I think about it, but a bunch of songs could be changed here and there to fit the setting. Thanks for the idea and the awesome example.

Lonely Mountain would be tough to pull off on guitar, but it is so epic. I really loved hearing Thorin sing it in the newest Hobbit trailer. But that being said, Beer song!! I had totally forgotten about that one. Great recommendation.

Bit out of my element here, but if it were up to me I'd look up old drinking songs, especially of Scottish or Irish origin.

The Old Dun Cow might be a good one for a Dwarvish drinking song. If you're feeling creative, look up a few military cadences and adapt them to dwarves.

Then there is the really moving opera song about the two lost dwarfen lovers that died against the big dragon called

Gold!

Flogging Molly has some song, you might be able to adapt:
Drink and Fight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE0q5cSmhaM&feature=related), Irish Pub Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywX3vZaE7Hc&feature=related) (look on the lyrics in that one) and if you could modify the text of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSwaVvF7rdU) song, it would be fun to sing in a middle of melee combat (the refrain is pretty much fitting as is).

I don't play guitar and can't be sure, but March of Cambreadth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCrnF844_ww) should be possible to adapt for it. Besides, it has "How many of them can we make die?" in the refrain - surefire classic.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW3S2IAHZ3U&feature=related) song might be of interest as well.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR4TDBXebWc) has an interesting guitar melody for a more serene moments.

Some suggestions (http://rpg-crank.livejournal.com/tag/filk):

Dwarven women, are beautiful lovers
Dwarven women, they understand
I've been around some, and I have discovered
That dwarven women know just how to please a man.
(Verse)
Everybody seems to love those human women
Buck eighteen on up to twenty-five
Well I love 'em too, but I'm tellin' you
Dwarves know to really love, and boy it sure is fine
(CHORUS)
(Verse)
So baby don't you worry about growin' whiskers
Those elven girls ain't got nothin' on you
Cause it takes some whiskey, to get 'em frisky
And frisky dwarves may just be the ones to teach 'em a thing or two.
(Chorus)

I.
(This bit of dwarven poetry suffers somewhat in its translation; the
original dwarven was very metrical and alliterated, with every third
line emphasizing assonance. Considered one of the masterpieces of
dwarven poetry, it unfortunately loses much in Modern Eastern, which
combines elements of old Human languages and Elven with only occasional
word-roots from dwarven.)

Sweating, the bare-chested dwarf stood before her heat
His thick fingers caressing the shaft of his tool
Gently, but with firm sureness, he drew her passion out
Deftly manipulating it with skillful hands
Drawing it across a bed which shone with flickering heat
Her voice a ringing bell as he labored for her passion.
Down his tool plunged, drawing forth another ringing cry
Shaping her passion to his own ends
His joy ringing out, heard throughout the village.

Blunt fingers caress her passion,
Following line and curve,
Supple, yet yeilding lightly to no dwarf
Sharp, yet able to ease the pain of the most hardened warrior
Touched by the flames of his desire
She offers forth her bounty to a dwarf of skill and art

His joy nears an end, her cries come less often
Though no less stridently, no less powerfully
With sure, skillful hands he quenches her passion
Heat and moisture flow outward, enveloping him in warmth
He roars his fulfillment, and then pauses to reflect upon her glow
The source of dwarven life, the birth of its passion.

II.
(While technically "dwarven" poetry, in that it was copmosed by a dwarf,
this is far from the best example of the race's abilities; it was first
composed in Eastern, for the enjoyment of human audiences.)

Shall I compare thee to a summer's ale?
Thy blonde braids falling like creamy foam
Framing thy dark face like an oaken stout.
Thy beard is soft and full, like a field of hops,
and carries the scent of aged wood and heady malt
Thy scent is rich, thy taste intoxicating
Too much of you will drive me mad
And should I endure in thy company
Each day I should find it harder to leave
Until I am a slave to thee, just as some are to drink
Though some like thee not
Thou are more valued to me than gold
When I breathe deep your female scent
I am drunk with joy, favored above all dwarves

I like big beards and I can not lie
You other dwarves can't deny
When a girl walks in with a big thick waist
And hair all over her face
You get sprung
Wanna pull up tough
Cuz you notice that face was scruffed
Deep in the helm she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh, baby I wanna get with ya
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But that beard you got
Make Me so horny
Ooh, ain't got smooth skin
You say you wanna get in my clan
Well use me use me cuz you aint that average groupie
I've seen them smithin'
The heck with romancin'
She sweats, wet, gots whiskers like my uncle Chet

I'm tired of elven queens
With their smooth little things
Take the average dwarf and ask him that
Her face has gotta scratch, so
fellas (yeah) fellas (yeah)
Has your dwarf-girl got the beard? (heck yeah!)
Don't let her shave it, shave it
Keep that healthy beard...

Baby got beard...

Hairy face makes for dwarven beauty...

From the depths of the DF forum:

I got a pick on mah shoulder,
So drunk I can't hold er'
I've got some stout in my beard,
And a mug fulla beer!
But this dwarf went to work, with a gal shaped like granite,
He got so smashed it felt like he'd been hit by a mallet!
And he stuck his pick through an old stone wall,
but behind all that stone was a big waterfall
Which washed his gal away
It coulda ruined his day
But a dwarf is a dwarf,
Only a coward would jump off a wharf!
But lady Urist gave a shriek in the tunnels of night,
She had suffered a terrible fright!
the tentacle demon grabbed her leg,
She whacked it with a keg!

CHORUS

Who's to say that I should be,
That I should be a fightin' man,
Oh who's to say that I should fight
When I could be a CRAF-TER!
Who's to say that I should be,
That I should be a fightin' man,
Oh who's to say that I should fight,
That we should fight at all!

Who's to say that I should be~
*A great screamin' berser-ker*
When I could be~
*The lucky lad whose song gets all the girls!*

Oh who's to say that I should be~
*An e-lephant hun-ter*
When I could be~
THE LUCKY LAD WITH TUSKS UPON HIS WALL!

CHORUS

Who's to say that I should be~
*An al-ligator wrest-ler*
When I could be~
*The lucky lad with brand new leather boots*

Oh who's to say that I should be~
*An orc-beheading axe-dwarf*
When I could be~
THE LUCKY LAD WHO MAKES HIS SKULL A CUP!

CHORUS

Who's to say that I should be~
*A carp-crushin' mace-dwarf*
When I could be~
*The lucky lad who carves the fish filet!*

Oh who's to say that I should be~
*A kobold-killin' marks-dwarf*
When I could be~
THE LUCKY LAD WHOSE TREASURES BROUGHT HIM HERE!

FINAL CHORUS

What do we do with a sober miner;
What do we do with a sober miner;
What do we do with a sober miner;
Early in the morning

Heave-haul and up she rises!
Heave-haul and up she rises!
Heave-haul and up she rises!
Early in the morning

Stick him in the still till' his livers fail him;
Stick him in the still till' his livers fail him;
Stick him in the still till' his livers fail him;
Early in the morning

-Chorus-

Put him in a dress when the elves are watching;
Put him in a dress when the elves are watching;
Put him in a dress when the elves are watching;
Early in the morning

-chorus-

Tie him to a rope and drop him in the magma;
Tie him to a rope and drop him in the magma;
Tie him to a rope and drop him in the magma;
Early in the morning

-chorus-

Order him to drink dry the aquifier;
Order him to drink dry the aquifier;
Order him to drink dry the aquifier;
Early in the morning

-chorus-

Stick him headfirst in the still and leave him;
Stick him headfirst in the still and leave him;
Stick him headfirst in the still and leave him;
Early in the morning

That's what we do with a sober miner;
That's what we do with a sober miner;
That's what we do with a sober miner;
Early in the morning

This is the story of a dwarf,
who could run fast and travel far.
In his legendary travels,
we'll follow him, beer in hand.

(Chorus):
We are the dwarves under the mountain!
We dig at day, we drink at night,
and we don't like surface-dwellers.

One day, my ancestor Gurdil,
was sent to dig up in the forest.
It was said there was Mithril,
If there was we never found it.
He built his cabin just beside
a thick wood filled with high elves.
Of course, people who eat grass,
never make good neighbours.

(CHORUS)

"Back off, you are not welcome here!"
The elves told him, while throwing rocks.
Seeing everything was falling to s***
He ran away following the river.
He was found by fairies
Covered with bruises, lying on the bank.
Rainwater was given to him,
He spit it all (Pwah!), all back in their faces!

(CHORUS)

Running through the bushes,
He came to a human town.
Of course they sold beer!
But no man would serve a dwarf.
Gurdil slaughtered the owner
of the tavern, using a nearby stool.
Then, he travelled back home,
and from the mine, he never ever left!

(CHORUS)

Friends, let's stay in our shelters,
Let's eat, let's drink in our stone homes.
Up there, it's filled with dumbasses.
Come on, bardwarf! Serve us another beer!

(CHORUS) x2

sung to the tune of "my way" by Frank Sinatra
And now, the end is near,
Its time to face the final demon.
And now, it is so clear,
We dug to deep here.

Regrets, we have a few,
To many to mention
And now, at the end,
we're in a situation.

But when, we first got here,
there was nothing, but a cliff face,
and then, we we made a plan,
and dug it our way!

We made a cave, called it home,
and survived a winter,
Our smith arrived,
and we built a smelter

In the spring, we built a still
and started to, brew ale,
and when, it was Finally done,
We drank it all day!

Then we dug deeper
and struck some gold,
along, the way we lost,
some dwarves to the river,

I guess, now and then,
Thats bound to happen,
and when, we dug for coal,
that caused a cave in.

And Then, a dwarf went mad,
and claimed a workshop,
and there, he made The Plain Whiteness of the Soul,
He Made it his way!

The hold, continued to grow
with scores of migrants,
they came, drawn by tales
told by merchants

one day, some nobles came,
with demands and mandates,
and we, we broke our backs,
to keep them happy!

When, we hit the magma,
the poor miner, burned
but then, we cleared him up,
and build a forge

in time, the goblins came
and we were beseiged.
lots of dwarves, they all died
but we fought them our way!

After that, our engravers worked
their work, it was disturbed
The Goblin stands, and he laughs
the dwarf is fetal.

Then, the elephants came,
and we again did battle,
we scores more,
killed by Ivory!

the Goblins, they came again,
this time we killed them with magma,
the elves, they were not pleased,
for we had killed, all the trees.

but now, we near the end,
for we have bridges of steel.
and in, our quest for gold,
We crossed the magma!

and there, we woke an evil,
and demons, they got medival,
We fought, many died,
but we won, in the end,

and then, we dug deeper
now, with building fear,
but then, we struck,
ADMIMANTIUM!

And thats, how we fell,
as greed, did overwelm,
and and we began to mine,
and really went to town.

but now, the end is near,
and we face the final deamon.
and now, we'll all die, but we know.
we mined it our way!

An old April fools episode of Dragon Magazine had ZZ Dwarfs lyrics to Steel Dressed Man, I think D&D was in its third edition when it was printed. There was another one about fireballs, I think it was a Britney Spears parody, I wish I knew where those old magazines went.

You reminded me of scene from Dungeons & Dragons comics:
Human, to an Elven Ranger: Sing some happy elvish song.
Elf: You do realized that all happy elvish songs are about killing invading humans, right?
Human, to Dwarven Warrior: So you sing some happy dwarvish song.
Dwarf: Also about killing invading humans.

You also remind me of guys I once knew, who made a dwarven song "truth about Elves" they sang whenever girls from our club said how sexy Elves are. But you don't want to sing it, unless to annoy enemy Elves, it went like this: "Because all Elves are ****/And the kiss dwarven ***/One day the Dwarfs will get together/ And they will **** Elves forever."

Edit: Or you can try this little melancholic Ukrainian song , Hey Falcons. It's actually sang on drinking parties in Ukraine and Poland.
Dwarven translation by me:

Hey, where the black river flows
Young warrior gets on his horse
Tenderly says goodbye to his girl
Leaves his home with tears

hey, hey, hey falcons
Beware mountains, plains and holes
Ring, ring my bell
My skylark of the step

There are many girls in world
But in home the pretiest lot
There had I my heart left
With my beloved girl

hey, hey, hey falcons
Beware mountains, plains and holes
Ring, ring my bell
My skylark of the step

She is all alone there
My little pretty quial
And I'm here, on alien doorstep
Day and night miss her

hey, hey, hey falcons
Beware mountains, plains and holes
Ring, ring my bell
My skylark of the step

Grief, regret leaving her
And the home all so green
Grief, grief, my heart cry
That I may not again seen her alive

hey, hey, hey falcons
Beware mountains, plains and holes
Ring, ring my bell
My skylark of the step

Wine, winde, give me more
And bury me, when I'm gone
In my home, always green
Next to my beloved girl

No, I swear we sing it at the parties.

Along with Flogging Molly, I'd also recommend Great Big Sea. Some examples (not necessarily original to them) would be Old Black Rum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=admx0WApzbE), The Night that Patty Murphy Died (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Bsb-8pxG8&feature=related), and Ordinary Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AvkyHCU7XU)

Also Buy Us a Drink (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZShR68m5Ug) (starts at about 2:00).

All generically bard/drinking songs rather than particularly Dwarven, but good songs regardless.

EDIT: +1 to some say the Balor is dead as I like the original and the rewrite is excellent

The key to success as a Dwarven Bard:

Have a long beard
Have cheap sunglasses

Have a friend and bandmate (Also a dwarf) with an equally long Beard
This friend must also wear cheap sunglasses

FINALLY

Have a bandmate ( this time a halfling) named "Beard" who only has a moustache.
Also wears cheap sunglasses.

With this successful Dwarven Bard setup, you must sing "Every girl's crazy bout a sharp-dressed Dwarf".

Tubthumping!
In a book I'm working on, dwarves boast some of the world's best musicians. Lemme find the idea book I scrawled some songs in and I'll post them.

The forum ate my post, so I shall repost: Well, I thought it did... guess my browser glitched or something.

1. Queen- Ogre Battle
2. Alestorm- Wenches and Mead
3. Crash Test Dummies- Two Knights and Maidens
4. Kris Kristofferson (version)- The Winner

And it may require some creative rewording, but this is a delightfully haunting tune, and a great story-teller song... sounds like something a dwarf would sing:

Tom Russell (version)- The Sky Above, The Mud Below

I’ve decided to compose:
[Insert song name here], by thethan

For the clan
We will fight to the last man
For our homes
We all fight, even the gnomes

(Chorus)
Raise your hammer
Sharpen your axe
Prepare for the glamour
And the bloodiest of acts
For life and limb
A battle dark and grim
(/Chorus)

We go to war
We’ll be covered in gore
For we swore
We’ll fight and die
With a mighty battle cry

(Chorus)

Though the dead my rise
And the dragon flies
We look to our allies
And to no surprise
We’ve seen their demise
So we grasp at the warrior’s prize
(chorus)

The din of battle loud
Our warriors stand proud
To carry the day
To see our enemies dismay
As we keep them at bay

(chorus)

And if we shall die
You should know why
We gave our life
To end the strife

For what it's worth, I'd suggest Eluveitie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iijKLHCQw5o), the Swiss folk-metal band (although I'm a massive fan of them, so I may be biased :smallcool:).

I think the mixture of catchy, sing-along folk melodies and incredible, sometimes crushing heaviness really suits the dwarfs .

if you want something a bit more peroid-appropriate (i.e. no electric instruments :smallwink:) then I'd focus on something chanty, maybe with subtle musical accompaniment (I'm think some type of Irish bagpipe here, as being less... noticeable... than the 'traditional' variant*. Or a hurdy gurdy would probably be amazing).

* Sorry I don't know the official instrument names .

If it has not already been suggested, might I recommend:

Clearly the man was a king among dwarves.

Wait… what? A Dwarvern song about not drinking?

Dublin Delight (http://ocrmirror.org/files/music/remixes/Artura_Dublin_Delight_OC_ReMix.mp3)

Actually, I think this would be especially funny for Dwarves, since the idea of passing up a drink is so alien.

You can find lyrics, etc. here (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01395/).

You guys are awesome. Between School, and bad, bad internet I haven't had a chance to check out the forums until now! I come back and see this?! So awesome. Some of the suggestions here are truly epic. If I can learn even half of the stuff here, My character will be a legend amongst Dwarf bards. =)

Kieza: Classic! I wonder if I could add some Rock n Roll to it and really spoof it up!
Stack: That sounds like a song truly filled with what makes a dwarf himself, and the color of their intentions, which clearly would have to be Gold!
VeliciaL:That seems to be the majority of suggestions I'm getting, and I have to say, they really work!
Telonius:Military cadences? I hadn't thought of that! Great suggestion.
Siegel:It always brings me to tears thinking of that opera. simply stunning!
Radar:AWESOME. I can totally use those. March of Cambreadth will be PERFECT for batles.
Mark Hall:Those are great! I'll admit though, I don't think I could sing the one in the middle with a straight face! It goes deeper into a dwarves love life than I had ever wanted to go. (Pun unintended!)
Hamishspence:Promising! I'll have to check em out.
Daer:I never expected Bard's Tale to have so many promising songs! I'm particularly fond of 'Viking Song'! And drunken sailor is perfect when I change some of the lyrics!
horngeek:Heck yeah!! I think I'll learn this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a903CeHq0A&feature=g-all-f&context=G2fa6554FAAAAAAAACAA) version!
Pokonic:Those are fantastic! Now I'll put them to a tune..
RandomNPC:See, That's enough for me to go on! Go, Go gadget, Parody!
Man on Fire:That's awesome! I like the idea of a song built totally around the idea of telling the praises of dwarves, and how much better they are then Elves.
playswithfire:Any good drinking song is a good Dwarf song in my eyes!
Mike_the_Mystic:...Are you a wizard? That's an AWESOME idea!
TechnoScrabble:Awesomesauce! Also, thanks for the awesome new phrase to use! Tubthumpin'!
Siegel:In all truth, that's gotta be my next instrument to learn.
inexorabletruth:Awesome suggestions! I had never heard Ogre Battle before now! And I call myself a Queen fan.
TheThan:Awesome lyrics, man. I'll have to find a tune to put it too!
Fergo:Great suggestions! I really like Eluveite, and thanks for showing them to me! They've got a great sound!
Kogak:That's an awesome suggestion! Haha. Many people have recommended it, and I think that'd show how much of a hit it'd be!
QuidEst:Awesome!! That will do the trick!

Thanks! It's good to see another Queen fan. I've been a card carrying member of the Official International Queen Fan Club since 1992, but I live in America, so a fat lot of good that does me. :smallamused:

Anyway, check out music from their self titled album, Queen, and Queen II. That was during their fantasy rock phase. You'll find stuff like:
Fairy-Fellers Master Stroke
March of the Black Queen
Great King Rat
Nevermore
Seven Seas of Rhye

in those albums, but none of them sounded "dwarfy" to me.

An old April fools episode of Dragon Magazine had ZZ Dwarfs lyrics to Steel Dressed Man, I think D&D was in its third edition when it was printed. There was another one about fireballs, I think it was a Britney Spears parody, I wish I knew where those old magazines went.

I know this is an old thread, but I ran into it....

Thanks! I wrote "Steel Dressed Man" and "Fry, Fry, Fry" (that was NSYNC, btw) and "Ooops I Fumbled Again"

They were in Dragon Magazine #282. It is still available online at Paizo, if you are interested.

He's actually got a lot of DF "inspired" pieces.

@hamishpence - the gold song refrain is a great one. I'm going to have to remember that. It would be a good one to duet with a surface dweller
"There's more than just gold,"
,.....,...."Gold is enough."
Etc
