...Nah, sorry but college takes priority. I'll be able to tell you guys ahead of time if I can't make the weekly update though. :smalltongue:

Hi! Welcome to the EIGHTH thread of Murphy's Law! As you can probably guess, this is an OOTS-style webcomic. It's comedic, yet with an ongoing, in-depth storyline. It starts out with a multiclass Fighter/Paladin named Lloyd Zephyr looking to organize an adventuring party, and quickly mushrooms from there into something much bigger...

So, yeah...Enjoy!

“Went down your--” Lloyd began to say.

“And that is all I’m going to say about it,” Matt cut him off flatly.

“Whatever,” said Lloyd, looking at Matt’s weasel-inflicted wounds critically, “You should probably go get Janine to heal you.”

“Can’t paladins heal?” Matt asked, not sure where Janine was and in no mood to search for her while every scratch on his body was still smarting.

“The technique’s called ‘Lay on Hands’,” Lloyd replied neutrally.

“Oh,” said Matt. A few seconds of silence passed. “This sucks,” he added in a grumble.

“More than max security?” Lloyd asked as a reminder.

“No,” said Matt darkly, staring broodingly into the middle distance.

---

It was two years ago, back when he was just learning how to get away with things and had recently tried to put a red streak in his hair. The hair was a minor fiasco—he’d bleached first and the red dye wasn’t strong enough, leaving the streak an embarrassingly pretty purplish pink; maybe he should try blue next time—but he was getting to be a really good rogue. Or so he thought.

In retrospect he realized that he probably shouldn’t have been so cocky—after all it was already the sixth time he’d been caught stealing and he’d only been at it a few months—but back in those days he’d felt like he could do anything, like he was untouchable. Sure, he’d gotten thrown in the local jailhouse once or twice, but those cells were a joke; he watched a party full of Level 2 adventures with not a rogue among them break out in ten minutes flat once. Of course, those were the lowest security cells, not max. He didn’t know yet that when they threw you in max, you weren’t getting yourself out any time soon unless you were epic level or something.

That day, the day he got caught for the sixth time, they threw him in max.

“I really am sorry, kid,” the warden had told him grimly, “But today we got three adventuring parties filled with chaotic types who thought they’d found the second easiest way to get some extra gps; the cells are packed, so you’re going to have to go in max.”

“Whatever,” Matt muttered.

A little annoyed by the boy’s indifference, the warden added, “Just so you know, your cell mate got life for massacring a relatively peaceful group of kobold merchants for the XP and…” He gulped. “Accessorizing opportunities.”

“Whatever,” Matt repeated. Wait a minute, what about accessorizing?

“He gets violent when we try to remove things from his cell,” he went on, now honestly angered by the boy’s lack of interest, “Such as the beheaded corpses of former cell mates…”

“What do you mean--” Matt began to ask, a little panicked, before regaining his cool. “You’re making that up just to scare me.”

“If only,” the warden said with a sigh, “I suggest you just try to have a conversation with him; some say the solitude’s made him snap. Ah, here we are.”

At first Matt thought his cellmate was a kobold. Then, gagging, he realized what the warden had meant by “accessorizing opportunities”.

“How’s it going, Killer?” the warden asked with false joviality.

Clutching a human skull pointed at the warden, the filthy Halfling shrieked, “Fireball! Fireball now, or I’ll give you something to Fear you worthless undead piece of crap!”

“This is your new roomie!” the warden continued, forcing himself to smile in the hope that the Halfling would calm down, “His name is Matthew Silver.”

Matt was too terrified to correct him.

While the Halfling did something partially hidden but, Matt feared, definitely obscene to the skull that wouldn’t obey his commands, the warden very quickly unlocked the cell, shoved Matt in, and relocked it.

“I really am sorry,” the warden told Matt again, “If one of those parties breaks out, I’ll get you out of here pronto, but…” He glanced at the Halfling. “It’d be a lie to tell you anything but this: From here it can only get worse.”

He left Matt alone with this thought. And the delusional, psychopathic Halfling.

It took several minutes for the Halfling to get bored with… what he was doing with the skull, but once he did, he took an immediate interest in Matt.

“You don’t look like max security material,” he told the boy smugly, “I guess without the Belkster out there to show ‘em how it’s done, the standards are dropping.”

Matt could manage nothing but a deer-in-the-headlights expression. At this point he was so scared he was barely even breathing.

To his wide-eyed horror, the Halfling began to approach him, picking up a severed head that was lying on the floor by its silvery hair on the way.

“Let’s get a few things straight,” the murderer said, “When they bring the grub in, your plate goes to Mr. Scruffy.” He began stroking the hair on the head affectionately. “Of course none of the stuff here’s good enough for his carnivore tastes, but he’s gotta eat eventually, and when he finally gets hungry enough, he is not going to starve on your account. Got it, wuss?”

Matt managed a nod. Living to see suppertime would be blessing enough. Glances around the room had let him count six different heads, and worryingly he’d only been able to spot four of the respective bodies…

“You really are a wuss, you know? You really shouldn’t be here…” As if too distracted by this revelation to hold his concentration on other things, the Halfling dropped the head known as “Mr. Scruffy.” He stared at Matt. For a long time.

“Aha!” Before Matt had time to realize anything was happening, the Halfling had him pinned to the ground and was yanking on a lock of his hair.

“Thought you could get a way with that?” the Halfling raved. The hand that wasn’t gripping Matt’s hair began fishing around in his grubby pockets for something. “Oh… I’ll do you for that, you androgynous twit…”

“Wh-what?!” Matt sputtered. Through the haze of pain the hair-pulling was spreading through his skull, he thought that the victimized hair might be that stupid attempt at a red streak, not that that was even remotely important right now…

“Come off it, Ears,” the lunatic snapped, yanking what appeared to be a sharpened spoon out of his pocket, “Your friggin’ lame disguise has failed epicly.” His eyes gleamed. “Then again, you always were one for epic failure, weren’t ya, pal?”

“What are you talking about?” Matt asked desperately. And, what did he mean by “Ears”? His voice now laced with disgust, he added, “You think I’m an elf?”

“I said come off it,” the Halfling repeated sharply. Then, to Matt’s surprise, he let go of his hair and his expression softened. “I guess I should’ve stopped bringing it up, after you told us everything that happened, but it was just too good; you finally admitted you screwed up.”

“Oh, I see,” Matt snarled, “An arrogant prick of an elf. Why you--”

“It was worth it, too,” the Halfling continued, now mostly ignoring Matt, “When you just kept blowing stuff up, especially when Roy was throwing hissy fits all the time because we wouldn’t knock it off. But then,” now his face flushed with rage, “You frickin’ set me up in this dump of a town with a frickin’ epic level prison!” He refocused his gaze on Matt. “And of course you had to come back and gloat,” he added, his voice cold.

“Dude,” said Matt, “I don’t even know what you’re talking about, and I’m not an elf! I hate elves!”

“Nice try, Ears,” said the Halfling, “But you really should have chosen a disguise that looked like it actually belonged in max security.” With a disturbing suddenness, the Halfling grinned. “Since you obviously can’t break out of this cell anymore than I can… Do you know what they do to pretty, purple-haired little elf-boys like you in prison, Vaarsuvius?”

“It’s Matt,” Matt spat, but his face was paling.

Brandishing the lethally sharp spoon, the madman said, “Because I’m about to show you.”

---

One of the adventuring parties did break out eventually, and the warden came to move Matt to another cell as he promised, in the nick of time, at that. Whenever Matt looked back on the whole incident (usually after waking up from a graphic nightmare) he shuddered to think what might have happened had he been left in there longer, but nonetheless wished that he could have been moved sooner.

In the weeks following his stay in prison Matt improved as a rogue very quickly. Before it’d been all about the loot but now he’d learned to focus on not getting caught. He decided he was never going to prison again and would do whatever it took to stay out of maximum security.

---

“Did you just have a flashback?” Lloyd asked Matt accusingly.

“Yeah,” said Matt, “Got a problem with that?”

“I’m the main character and I’ve already hinted at a dark and interesting backstory,” Lloyd said hotly, “I’m supposed to get the first flashback!”

Matt smirked. From here it could only get better.

“Nooooooo!” Matt cried upon abruptly waking, sitting straight up. Rubbing his eyes, he said gruffly but a little sheepishly, “Sorry, I know that’s one of the most annoying clichés in the book, but…” He looked around him. All three of the other adventurers were still asleep. “Okay… Nevermind.” Shuddering a little and trying to push the nightmare out of his thoughts, he slowly lied back down.

“Mmm… Glad you think so Lloyd… Now come here…”

“What?” Matt sat back up, looking around himself again. Everyone was still asleep. He glanced at Lloyd. Nope, definitely not doing anything to Janine. He glanced at Janine—

“Oh, Lloyd, I think I’m wounded…”

“Wounded?” Matt repeated, raising an eyebrow. He’d never heard that one before.

“You must Lay Hands on me…”

Oh. That made sense. He should’ve seen that one coming, really. As Janine’s words dissolved into little moans that made him uncomfortable on multiple levels, he lied back again, muttering, “Who seriously talks in their sleep anyway?” and tried to go back to sleep.

“Let me show you another use for Water Drops…”

Water Drops? Matt frowned. Weren’t those those little pills wizards could make out of water that released mouthfuls of water when you chewed on them?

“That’s right, put it there…”

“What the…?” Matt murmured.

“Now squeeze… Ah!”

“Is she…?”

“Mmm… You know, if you’re Good…” There was a little snorting sound that might have been Janine giggling, “The water tastes sweet… Oh, yes…”

“Oh, no…” Matt said with a grunt, rolling over and clutching his stomach. He did not want to hear this.

“I also know another use for—”

“Gah!” Matt cried, clapping his hands over his ears. How am I going to get back to sleep with this show playing in the background? Well, he couldn’t hear her with his hands over his ears, at least. Okay. I can do this… He started taking deep breaths in an attempt to make himself fall asleep faster while keeping his hands over his ears. Though this method wasn’t quite as efficient as he’d hoped for it to be, after about half an hour he felt himself drifting off. His arms relaxed has he sunk into a peaceful slumber, his hands gently falling away from his ears…

“Oh, Lloyd, I didn’t know you were a sorcerer…”

“Huh…?” Matt muttered sleepily.

“There really are a lot of uses for Prestidigitation… Mmm…”

Ba-dum, ting! Matt’s half-dreaming mind supplied for that one liner as he let out a moan of protest. He tried to sit up again, but realized he was already falling asleep, Janine’s words weaving themselves into his dreams…

---

“Nooooo!” Matt cried out again, awaking while sitting bolt upright for the second time that night. Taking deep breaths to calm himself down, he looked around to find that once again he’d failed to wake up the other three adventurers. It wouldn’t have been all that bad, he mused, wiping the cold sweat from his brow, if there hadn’t been so much… Lloyd. After shooting a glare at the now innocently silent Janine, he lied back and was asleep within minutes.

---

Remus raised his head to make his best you-should-feel-guilty sad eyes at the screaming human but to no avail; the little punk didn’t even glance at him. Apparently no one cares if they wake up just a dog in the middle of the night. As Matt went back to sleep, Remus put his own head back down with a self-righteous sniff, but raised it again after a few seconds.

Remus heard a sound. It sounded like an animal sound, but it wasn’t a familiar sound. A weird tp-tp-tp-tp-tping was prowling in a circle around them. The dog scanned the forest as best as he could, a low growl rumbling in the back of his throat. It was hard to tell now that Radic’s friend had started muttering in her sleep again, but after a few seconds it sounded like the tp-tping had stopped. This didn’t make Remus feel any better. Whining a little, he nudged Radic’s arm with his nose.

---

“Urg, Remus…” Radic groaned, batting her companion’s cold nose away from her, “What is it?”

Remus whined and poked her arm with his nose again.

“Okay, okay,” said Radic, sitting up and scratching him behind an ear, “What’s wrong, boy?”

“Mmrr… Lloyd,” Janine murmured, “You can… Desecrate my temple… Anyday…”

“Well that’s nothing new,” said Radic, playing with Remus’ ears, “Did she wake you up?”

Remus sniffed a little and let out another whimper.

“Northern ambush… Gnnh…” Lloyd was muttering, a sheen of sweat shining on his face.

“Oh,” said Radic, glancing over at him, “Poor guy… Wonder what’s going on in there?”

---

Remus settled down with a sigh while Radic sat down near the boy with a horse, stroking his hair occasionally and whispering little sympathetic phrases. It was just his luck that when he tries to warn her about possible danger, she decides she wants to get a head start on mating with something just because it looked pitiful when it slept. Oh well, he still hadn’t heard any more tp-tping, so maybe they were safe after all.

---

Lloyd seemed to be sleeping more peacefully now, and even though the way his face looked so smooth and elegant in the moonlight made Radic feel warm and giddy inside, at last she decided it was time she got back to sleeping too. As she drifted off next to a a sleeping Remus, oblivious to a faint tp-tp-tping sound approaching the camp from a distance, she decided that this was going to be the best campaign ever.

Lloyd looked at the other warrior. He was everything Lloyd admired in a man - self-confident, experienced, tough... yet there was a touch of sadness around him. A feeling that things weren't the way they were supposed to be.

"So, you've been adventuring with these for how long?"

"Oh, we're just starting out. We're looking for a dragon."

The other warrior nodded. He asked a few more questions, and without really knowing how it happened Lloyd suddenly realized he had told the other warrior much more than he intended. Even about Janine...

"I mean, it's like all she wants is sex. Yeah, that's important, but I want something more than that. I want a relationship, and it feels like she'll just go off in search of the next conquest five minutes after she's had me."

"Yes," said the other warrior. "I understand. But let me tell you something - I'm in a relationship with a sylph right now. She's a great girl, but being away from her for so long... you get the itch, y'know. Like this..."

The other warrior leaned over and kissed Lloyd softly on the mouth. Lloyd tensed up at first, then relaxed. He had never dreamt that being kissed by a man could be so wonderful. A whirlpool of emotions welled up inside him and drowned all thoughts of the quests, all thoughts of Janine, all thoughts...

Next, it might be One Druid (Radec), One Rogue (Matthew), and a room (Maybe?).
On the Murphy, Rust could say
"Look do as I told or the kids get it! Either fatherless or him!"

Compliment to Coffee,
When I read you comic and compare it to OOTS,
One unique difference is that your comic has more moral ambiguity than OOTS, especially the conflict between Kago and Plavaan (Hobbos, Greenskins and Greyskins).
Plavaan are monster races but most of the victims are innocent farmers.
Kago wanted land to feed its citizens.
Either Rust is the devil or "knight templar" angel.

Well, the assasin may be just a mook from an evil order of knights who wants to destroy kago but also kill plavaans.
Or maybe a mage's plot to rule the land.
or a bored talented assasin.
or the pony conquest of this world.

you can still call for Cleric to Cure Poison. (OR paladin has one).
Or he could break down after he discover that he cannot heal himself.

I think it happened a while ago but Coffee established at some point that hardly any clerics in this world make it to 2nd level. That doesn't give them many spells to work with and I don't believe curing poison is one of them.

Perhaps the poison in question was specifically designed to resist attempts to remove it?
I know that I wouldn't be foolish enough to use an ordinary poison against a high level paladin.

I wouldn't say that Matt and Radic are going to be anything like Haley and Elan other than being the couple of the party. Neither of them are completely terrified of telling the other how they feel, and neither of them are so committed to genre conventions that they won't admit their love until a dramatic moment pops up.

My personal prediction is that Radic is starting to fall for Matt now, but she won't take up a relationship with him because she doesn't like him enough to sleep with him and doesn't want to give him that impression. Cue Matt becoming disheartened and trying everything he can to make Radic like him to no avail.

Do you think Matthew lost his Brother? He show sorrow when Llyod mentions about Red Fever, which struck Nordica, including Kago, due to Virgin Soil incident (a native who faced new diseases will die in huge numbers). Maybe Matthew lost his parents to the plague and raised by his brother, who then die in a brawl, red fever and accident.
Maybe Radec lost her brother too.

I would like to make a note that Miles is not emo in the slightest. Terrified and paranoid to the point of being unable to sleep, yes, but not emo by any stretch. This is a man who restrains himself from expressing any sort of emotion, especially when he's distressed. Also, here's how this particular poison works. Basically it interacts with the myosin heads in muscle so ATP can't bind with them. Therefore, the myosin heads stay bound to the actin, resulting in muscle rigor. Of course, this only affects most skeletal muscles; the person will still be able to blink, breathe, speak, and control involuntary movements normally. Somebody who's really good in physiology, please double-check to make sure I'm right. I had my textbook with me as I went through it and I think I got an A on my physiology prelim, so I'm pretty sure this is biologically accurate, but it would be nice to have another person make sure.

I would not recommend targetting myosin specifically. Skeletal muscle is not the only type of muscle with myosin, and something that has such a wide-ranging effect would actually affect all types of muscles, including smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. If smooth muscle was paralysed, Lord Murphy would not only be unable to speak, he'd also lose control of his bowels and he wouldn't be able to breathe. If cardiac muscle was paralysed, Lord Murphy would enter cardiac arrest immediately.

I personally would not target muscles, per se, if you want to keep Lord Murphy breathing and talking. Even if you only paralyse skeletal muscles, he wouldn't be able to do either. What I'd use to replicate a Strength-damaging poison would be, simple as it sounds, a local acetyl-choline agonist. Wherever the blade cuts or the bolt/arrow sinks, the poison occupies all the acetyl-choline receptors in the muscle around the wound to generate numbness and regional paralysis. Eventually, the body would "flush" the agonist out and eliminate it like any other substance (hepatic degradation followed by renal elimination) in a rate that we could equate to the character regaining the damaged Strength points.

What you suggest could well be a poison that forces successive Fort saves to avoid dying, with a cumulative +1 to the DC for every successful save. Unless the antidote is administered or the victim manages to survive for a given number of rounds, they enter cardiac arrest and die.

I realized I forgot to mention that it only targets skeletal muscle, and doesn't affect speech, halfway to the party and it was too late to go back and edit it. :smalltongue: But that's a really good idea (and another one I had), and it's probably used in a different type of strength poison. Perhaps a dex poison would randomly activate the receptors, causing sporadic jerking movements making it extremely difficult to control coordinated movements...

Also, the comic's really small for some reason. I'm going to see if I can go back and edit it.

Well, considering that Dex 0 (which would be the poison's goal) is paralysis rather than convulsions (and the main difference between Str 0 and Dex 0 is that the character does not fall down), I think it may well be something neural again. I think a good Dex poison would cause the muscles to lock up and become rigid. Something that temporarily blocks the chloride channels in skeletal muscle (to simulate a specific type of myotonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myotonia), which is caused by a genetic deficit of voltage-dependent chloride channels in skeletal muscle) should do the trick.

Amazing. Both are acceptable.

However, I've never heard genetical used, so I assume it's falling out of use.

Genetical literally means "pertaining to the science of genetics".
Genetic is an adjective that means "having some of the characteristics of genes".

They're both suitably valid.
And yes, English is confusing the people who have it as their native language too.

Also, I don't think an assassin planning to kill the Lord of Kago would rely on using Strength poison. Injure and scare him, maybe, but if he was really going for the kill, he would have used Constitution poison.

Why I am thinking that Rust will frame Lamplight (Lamplight is in Lexington's room which means a good accusation for plotting an assassination attempt)?

Alagaesian
2012-04-15, 08:53 PM
Only one person needs to run off to fetch Hyperion. This would leave one person behind to guard Alexis and Murphy from a possible follow-up assassination attempt. I'm betting that Murphy is going to physically order Lexington to be the one to stay behind, given Murphy's current attitude towards Miles. Thus, if another assassination attempt comes through and kills everyone in the room, not only is Rust immediately crowned Lord, but Miles is put in a suspicious enough to position to be hanged.

If this is Rust's true plan, I applaud his status as a Chessmaster. I doubt that entire plan would actually go off without a hitch, however. It would be dreadfully wasteful to kill both Lexi and Miles, characters Coffee has spent around 20 strips developing, and Lexi sort of has immunity as the main character's love interest anyways.

I just want to delurk to place my bets: Lexi's status as a character's love interest is a death sentence. Miles is in that awkward position between "main character's friend and also too useful and intelligent to live" (which would also be a death sentence) and "Someone has to remain behind to explain everything to the heroes" so it's really a toss up whether he lives or dies (my bet is on "Dies after passing on some valuable knowledge").

Also, Murphy's days are numbered. In the single digits, most likely. This wasn't supposed to be a real assassination attempt (the assassin was too unprepared), but a set-up so that Rust can later kill Murphy and blame it on "the assassins" while also having an excuse to conduct an inquisition immediately afterwards in the name of "justice."

We know that Rust will control General Murphy through his stupidity (or Rust's gambits). Here's the questions...
- What if the "evil" gods (Rockwell, Drow, and goblinoids) were actually good guys and Sallblaze is planning to backstab Astrid (Maybe the story is unreliable sources)? Or Evil god =/= Evil people.
- What if Rust is actually knight templar who wanted to exterminate the "evil" Plavaans? We know his plan but we not not clearly know his intentions.
- Will Laria be prepared for possible invasions by racist and imperialist kago (or starving, racist, and desperate kago)?
- Why are the drows living in the swamp, instead of caves?

By my experience, that's only true if the character is there to see their love interest die. If they die and the character wasn't there to see it, then it loses most of the dramatic flare, which is what makes killing the love interest such an appealing plot device in the first place. Lloyd is currently hundreds of miles away from Lexi - thus, Lexi likely has a temporary immunity to death until Lloyd returns to Kago.

1. I don't think Murphy is dumb. He just isn't Miles. :smalltongue:
2. The whole " 'evil' gods means evil people thing got thoroughly debunked like, a looong time ago. The whole Lloyd killing innocents... thing did alot to clear up any confusion on this topic in Coffeelandia. :smalltongue:
3. Rust, to me, seems to be some variant of a lower planes high ranking devil/demon/stupid terminology. But I didn't follow this comic until like, 2 threads ago so I missed out on that speculation.
4. This is a different "setting", where there are Plaavian. As in, the faux genetics and magic/evolution that most D&D settings have are conveniently ignored and turned into "Plaavians. They exist. A bunch of gods did it." And we get SCIENCE in our magic. Because YES! :smallcool: (Yay science. :P)

And to elaborate on my "exposition" time, I think Murphy knows that Rust is not to be trusted. And will apologize to our good paranoid Miles for being mean, since he had to get Rust to think he was 'in his pocket', as it were.

Maybe I should stop being curious on Universe Lore questions.

I think your generalizing it a little. From my time here I've felt that coffee loves answering lore questions about her world. The issue arises with questions that have been asked very frequently and could be answered if you looked back a couple of pages. Also think about the way you ask, it's more important than what you actually ask. Try not to make too many assumptions in the question or tie it into another form of media (this includes tvtropes. Try to avoid that one especially) and when you do make comparisons to other works, (Also keeping in mind that there is more than just elder scrolls out there and that ES is by no means a standard for all fantasy.) make them general ones. Not very specific.

Not very specific.

This is an excellent suggestion. Here, for example:

Instead of saying "Did you come up with this idea from this story?"
Say "Where did you come up with this idea?"

The second option is stand alone and asks everything you want. And as a bonus, doesn't force the one who is answering to look up the other form of media you were pointing to if that person has no knowledge of it to begin with.

In some of my stories, I remember some people saying my stuff sounded similar to other sources that I never heard of. Every time that happened, I would feel bad and eventually stopped telling those stories because of fear of someone already "having" the idea. But I've learned since then that each world is its own and that coming up with an original idea is more then what happened in the story, its from where the artist got the inspiration to tell the story how they wanted.

So yeah, just ask the question generally and not compare it to some other form of media. Because if the answer is the artist came up with it him/herself, then the answer to the comparison question will always be, no they did not.

Just something to note, that Loyd isn't near Kago doesn't means that Lex has death by plot immunity, for example once (if) Rust get to power he may very well order to execute him due imaginary charges or even cause he has plaavan blood, and then Miles must contact Loyd and co. to a) Let them know the execution will take place in X time and they can try to save Lex or b) Lex has been executed. Which most likely will make the party go toward Kago to save, get revenge or extract his other friends.

I think this comic is following OotS's path in not giving characters explicit stats unless the plot requires it.

Also, I wouldn't count on the comic cutting back to Laria for at least another few strips. There are still some obvious loose ends that need to be tied up in Kago. Most notably, Murphy and Alexis wouldn't be helplessly Strength-poisoned right now if something isn't about to happen that requires them to move about. I'm still putting my money on a follow-up assassination attempt.

I don't think Janine would leave Team Gale right now anyways. Radic's her best friend, and Lloyd's still her romantic target. I can imagine that she'd be a little more reserved in going after Lloyd now, however, and there's the possibility that she could eventually lose interest in him entirely, but I don't think she'd give up him cold turkey.

I just did an archive binge of the comic, and a very interesting idea just crossed my mind. Say Rust comes back in a few strips and says this:

"I just performed an analysis on the weapons. They're Larian - and, even worse, they were very expensive. Someone would have to be in the nobility to put these in an assassin's hands."

Rust will probably be lying if he says this, but can you imagine what kinds of conclusions Murphy would jump to and what his resulting actions would be?

Also, Prince Riley's coronation is going to happen in a few days. Just thought I should bring that up.

Yeah... we kinda figured out Alistair was with Rust. Like, last thread. And two posts above yours Draconi made the same conclusion about "the two".
Sacrifice also means that Rust must be a cultist.

So... it's more plausible to you that Rust is a celestial who's an infernal cultist, than it is that he's an infernal?

It depends on the dragon. Spike is a dragon, and nobody cares one way or the next, because he doesn't rampage. Once he begins acting up, everyone wants him dead. See here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acwGMSuNcZo)

Yes and what if it was a plan by Rust, before he killed Lord Byron? He might have used the Plavaan (and their Red Fever) on Kago (who didn't have the immunity). Maybe he had a plan on it too, if Kago didn't get wipe out from Red Fever, their zealous knight templar will finish both, Kago and Plavaan.

Red Fever's been a problem in the eastern part of Nordica for a very long time. However, the plague was a result of a couple years of unusually warm, wet weather combined with a higher-than-normal amount of travel.

Alagaesian
2012-05-02, 09:47 AM
Ah. That makes a lot of sense. The Alavaan Plains, considering how they have been described as a possible agricultural center, were probably warm and wet enough for Red Fever to explode in that area long before it could properly spread to the other parts of Nordica. Hence, the Plavaan were given a few years head start on the disease.

In fact, if the plains were favorable enough to disease, then it makes perfect sense that Plavaans would evolve tougher immune systems than the other races. Kago's probably losing most of its soldiers due to Alavaan-area diseases, as opposed to actual warfare. Sure, Remove Disease could save a lot of those lives, but not if practically the entire army is coming down with several foreign pathogens.

Actually, considering how religious Kago is, it wouldn't be unusual to assume that most of the soldiers have regular access to clerics who could cure them of any major infections they might come down with. Assuming that Remove Disease won't give anyone an immunity to their affliction, that essentially means most of the Kago army has been relaxing in a sickness-free paradise for years to prevent their training/battles from being interrupted. Their immune systems have been given a large amount time to degrade and weaken. Then, you send all those untrained immune systems against a spectrum of nasty Alavaan diseases...

Yeah. I'm probably over-analyzing this and making several untrue assumptions, but this would help explain why Kago has been at war with the Plavaans for possibly more than a decade without managing to wipe out their smaller, less-organized, and technologically-weaker forces. (Besides Land-War-in-Asia scenarios and armor not being conductive to the guerrilla warfare the Plavaans are probably waging against them.)

Anyone who needs a plausible source of a sound that isn't plainly magical or illusionary.

Or anyone who's paranoid enough to save two spell slots per day for the following:

Protocol: Before resting at the end of the day, cast a future-telling spell (in one of the saved slots) and ask "what spell would be most useful for me to prepare in my situation slot (the other saved one) tomorrow, named according to the list I am holding?"

The list would chart all spells as root words, and all metamagics as prefixes or suffixes, so that the correct spell can be given as one word. Once one has more questions availible, save more than one slot for the situation spell.

One of the great parts about my college is that I literally started my vacation in mid-April. Not only does my vacation literally take up one third of the year, but because my college gets off a week earlier than most other ones, I was able to snag a summer job fairly easily.

Also, a very weird coincidence: I just realized that one of my engineering classmates was named Caroline Kramer. Same spelling and everything. She obviously isn't Coffee, but I thought it would be mildly entertaining for Coffee to know that she has an evil twin here in Michigan.

Also, in regards to the "what kind of person would prepare that spell" question, we already have evidence that Miles is heavily suspicious of Rust and probably completely paranoid. It wouldn't be unlikely to assume that Miles would prepare that entire three-spell combo every day so he would be prepared in the event that someone catches him snooping where he shouldn't be. Heck, he might have Readied that Quickened Invisibility spell in case he fumbled a Move Silently check while eavesdropping on Rust.

I wouldn't put it past him to prepare a wide variety of spells for emergency situations.
After all, he is unlikely to need to need to use damaging spells (Rust is unlikely to do something so foolish as to attack someone), and he can do that with a wand of magic missile or something.

Exactly! Miles has always been a rather suspicious fellow, but now he's completely paranoid! Also, dun, dun dun with the other me...Though no. I am not an engineering student. At all. Physics... *Shudder* I AM prevet though, which is like premed but with even more grade obsession because there's only 28 vet schools in the US and I've got my sights set on Cornell Vet School, the best in the country. And I'm taking organic chemistry next year.

To get back on topic, I really don't know if I can get this update in before finals end and I go home; my first final is tonight and even though I'm confident in gen chem, I'm not nearly as confident in statistics and physiology and I have to get a LOT of studying in. I can do it, it's just not going to be fun. At all.

But if I can't get the comic up before I go home, I am getting a tablet as an early birthday present within a couple days of heading home, so would you wait a few extra days if I can't get it up by Wednesday for me to get a hang of the tablet? The comics won't be completely tablet-drawn, but it'll make a bunch of details and stuff a lot easier, especially since I'm a lefty but I've kinda been trained to use a mouse/touchpad with my right hand.

Your evil twin was in my programming class. One of the things I love about studying engineering is that you don't need a twitchy-eyed obsession with your GPA to continue along your career path. You essentially just have to pass your classes and make sure everything you learned in college doesn't leak out your ears the moment you graduate. Then again, you'd need to study physics. And four terms of calculus. And somehow cobble together the degree requirement of 128 credits (16 credits/term, on average). It's not for the faint of heart, let me tell you.

You should also be happy to know that being a good drawer makes orgo much easier to handle, especially at the beginning. Also, the class will teach you how to draw regular polygons with both speed and accuracy. You might be able to get away with drawing comics on your tablet as structured procrastination.

So, yeah, don't worry about posting a new comic until after your exams are over. If you put up something and failed a class because it cut into your study time, the ensuing guilt would far outweigh any gains we might achieve by getting the comic a few days early.

They're Lexi and Lloyd. Yeah, I wanted to draw that last panel myself, but eventually found a filter to run the pose through as a substitute.

Confirmed! Lloyd and Lexi are gay lovers (in visual anyway). Do you think it will have siege of laria?
P.S- I wonder if it has to do with 2 kids. Blood for blood god, anyone?

Yeah, and Orgo's like the ultimate weeder course. :smalltongue: I think I'll be fine though. I got one of my semester grades back yesterday. Turns out an A- actually lowered my GPA. :smallamused:

We do not even get + and - and yet I am so jealous. >_<

Comicwise, it seems the tension is growing. Can barely wait to see if they make it out alive! Great job! ^_^

No, I ran it through a slight distortion filter. Take a look at Lloyd's head in the last panel.

Seriously. We don't need it in comic when it was Word of Coffee that told us it in the first place.:smalltongue: (Gay or bi, that is the question. :D)

Can Miles get some sleep now?:smallfrown: No, not with Lex. Get your minds outa the last panel people!

Heh, it's a lot harder than it looks. And my schedule's probably going to be more erratic next year, since I'm starting my animal physiology concentration and taking organic chem. But that's next year, and this year is done! I'll work on the comic a bit tonight and I'm heading home tomorrow!

Hey, all i do for the comic I work on is write scripts, and that's maybe, MAYBE 10-15 percent of the work, and thats enough, heh.

Even without hearing from the author, it's pretty easy to figure out. There's only two people Lexi could be, Lexington and Alexis. Alexis is the one spying on Lloyd with Miles when Lloyd is practicing his pick up lines so it can't really be her.

The "big battle scene" of which you speak is heavily dependent on what you define "big" to be. For instance, Murphy's fight with the assassin might be considered "big" because it has been the only battle scene since comic 98. Comic 69, if you don't count the flashback. Therefore, any fight containing more than three people might be considered "big" because it will be the largest fight since almost half the comic ago.

Anyways, am I the only one who enjoyed that Continuity Nod to Saphrine?

For 98, I called it a war crime and massacre. I called it war if they pull out a gun (or at least something equivalent).

No worries! Getting better from sucky days is important!

I am sure we have plenty of things to speculate about while we wait. So take your time.

I, for one, am wondering about the picture. Is it magic or do they have functional cameras? Or did I mistake a drawing for a photograph? ^_^'

I wonder what Lex means when he says "LLoyd he'll... I think I made my analysis prematurely." What analysis? what will lloyd do? Fight against them? He couldn't even fight against the 'real' enemy when he had grown up trained to kill them, I don't see him fighting anyone he is familiar with lol.

He told him Lloyd would be all right, since he's far away and can't get sucked into the war/ other nonsense going on in Kago. Now it looks like there'll be a much bigger war, and he might have been wrong about Lloyd not getting drawn in.

Yeah, if the war spreads any further Lloyd's getting sucked in whether he likes it or not. Also, the second panel of the comic I'm making now would be much easier if I had a tablet.

I wonder how Half Breeds (especially Orcs and Hobgoblins) can exist in Kago since they're too racist to give them a ugly backstory (don't want to use R word).

Trivia: Lyra and Cole are half-siblings; Lyra is a human while Cole is a half-orc. I think it's obvious how they're making quite a bit of money during this whole fiasco.

Also, in the second panel, I originally wanted Rust to have his hand in the waterfall, and as the water pooled and ran down his hand it would turn from clear to black, but it was just too hard to do without a tablet, and I don't think I'm getting that until my birthday in about 5 weeks.

Also also, the Selket River, along with its tributaries and so forth, is the main source of water for about 40% of the continent. If you managed to actually poison the entire river or something, the death toll would be 4-5 million, minimum. Point is, if Rust wants a lot of people dead, that's the fastest way Lexi can think of to do it. Except, of course, it's impossible to do.
