September 20
“We interrupt this regularly scheduled broadcast to bring you this important breaking news. Fighting on the Mexico and Texas border is being reported, with units of the Texas National Guard and the U.S. Border Patrol clashing with what is being reported as crowds of Mexican citizens on drugs. Officials speculate this to be some sort of attempt by Mexican drug cartels to overwhelm the United States border as a distraction for a large shipment of illegal narcotics. We now go to Stephanie Ramirez, live, in El Paso, Texas. Stephanie?”
“Thanks, Brock. I’m here in El Paso, Texas, overlooking the Rio Grande, the river separating the United States from Mexico in this part of the state. I have here with me Captain Mark Thompson of the Texas National Guard. Captain Thompson, can you tell us what is happening out there?”
The pretty but vapid reporter turned to face a stern looking man in the later half of his life, with close cropped salt and pepper hair and clean shaven face wearing a National Guard uniform.
“Well, all we know right now is about one hour ago, a small crowd of hopped up Mexicans started attacking people waiting to get through the U.S.-Mexican checkpoint. Mexican police opened fire on them, and that seemed to deter them for awhile, but more of them came. We arrived after our own Border Patrol had been over run. We don’t yet know how many men we’ve lost. We have managed to close the border now, but we’ve got a lot of casualties, Ms. Ramirez. A lot dead, and a lot of wounded back in the hospital tents.”
The captain’s radio began to squawk.
“Ms. Ramirez, that’s all I can say at this time. We have to go now, we should get you out of here. Shut that camera off. Now!”
The picture went dead for a moment, before returning to the original news anchor.
“Ah, we seem to be having some technical difficulties, but we’ll keep on it, folks. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.”

September 21
It was another busy day in the ER of Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital. The waiting room was packed with the sick and the injured. The two television sets were playing the same news channel. News from Texas was bad. Outbreaks of enraged, murderous people had been confirmed in Dallas, Houston, and Galveston. All three cities held major populations of evacuees and wounded from El Paso.
There was no news from El Paso at all. News helicopters flying over the city were showing mobs of bloody people flowing through the streets like a river of corpses. Every once in a while, the camera would zoom in on the crowd as it pulled a person from a stalled car, or broke into a store, dragging people out into the chaos, and eating them.
A pretty Latina woman was speaking into the camera for a news station from California.
“…no communication at all with San Diego. The last evacuation buses left the city three hours ago, headed for Anaheim. Many buses were filled to overflowing with wounded. Military cargo planes also assisted in the evacuation, heading to bases in California and Nevada. Wait...it seems that we have just received word that Anaheim is under attack from mobs of violent illegal aliens. We are receiving reports of mass casualties...”
From Massachusetts: “The Governor has just declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Massachusetts. Both the National Guard and the State Guard have been mobilized and ordered into Boston to help contain the...er...rioters. All citizens have been ordered to remain where they are. I repeat, all citizens have been ordered to remain where they are.”
Then, the station went black only to return quickly to the scene of a podium with the Maryland state seal on the front and a blue velvet drape behind. Shortly afterwards, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley stepped up to the podium.
“The State of Maryland, at the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control, is encouraging everyone to stay away from public areas. Stay at home, lock your doors, and let no one in. If you or a family member become infected by this disease, whatever it may be, immediately isolate yourself or them from any other family members. It is imperative that you do not attempt to go to a hospital, as all hospitals are either full at this time, or are not equipped to handle this outbreak. As a precaution, your state government, including myself, will be sequestering ourselves in a safe facility so as to continue to keep vital services within the state operating at peak efficiency.
At this time, we have very little knowledge of the disease that is wreaking so much havoc across the country. Outbreaks have now been reported in Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. The EU is sending a special team of scientists and doctors to study the disease as we speak.
We also do not recommend trying to leave the state at this time as other states are under martial law. Boston is a battle zone, and Manhattan is burning to the ground at this very moment. We will continue to do our best to safeguard the good citizens of this state. Both the National Guard and the State Police have been mobilized and are now setting up relief and aid stations that will be stocked with food and water, as well as medical units. We will announce the locations of these stations as soon as possible. Good luck, and God bless.”

Jason Lane

Jason sat in the waiting room, watching the reports on the television. Some might have suspected that he was there for a crash—given the way he was dressed (full high-end motorcycle gear, Kevlar and padding and the works). But truth be told he didn’t have a scratch on him. His room-mate, Carlos, had been taken here. They said he was sick. They said it was bad. The ren. Meet could wait for a few hours, at least.

Yesterday, Jason had peripherally heard of the problem in El Paso. One of his buddies on the game servers had mentioned it. Today, he was seeing that whatever the “riot” was… it had somehow made its way up to Massachusetts. Somehow he doubted that this was limited to just immigrants from Mexico. And the images of Texas… People eating each other? And how did they over-run a city as big as El Paso? The bad feeling he had sat there in the pit of his stomach.

Then the governor came on. He said that the CDC was involved. That it was an infectious disease, and not a riot… and that it was destroying the Western Hemisphere. He said to stay away from public areas. His instincts told him to get on his bike and get out of here… but Carlos. Jason stood up and muscled his way through to one of the attendants.

“Carlos Gutierrez, where is he? What’s his condition?”

Jason’s survival skills had never been put to the test… but inside he was screaming “get out, get out, get out.”

Edward Pickett

"Juan García, 23 years old.
Lives in Baltimore, somewhereandnomewhere 123.

Symptoms started a week days ago, and include fever (102 degrees F, worst at night), coffing, and chest pain which enhances during breathing movements.

The patient presented Class III dyspnea that has receded during treatment.

Edward put the chart on the table and pressed his eyes with his fingers, to focus.
The radio was playing one of those awful new pop songs. Edward only let it on because he needed the noise to work.

He took a sip of his coffee. He hated to review clinical histories almost as much as he hated to write them. But the paperwork was a part of the job.

It was necessary, after all. He took a few extra notes on the chart and filed it away with the rest.

Edward was alone in the medic's room at the moment. He had just got up from a nap, and this was his 23rd hour of work. One more hour, and he was gone for the day.

He changed the station, tired from the music, and overheard the CDC anouncement.

"This is bad. This is as bad as it gets. I hope Claire is allright..."

Claire Kingstone was his Ex-wife. He was recently divorced, and she had moved into New York three months ago.
Edward grabbed his things, preparing to take a last round to check on his patients.

As he left the room. he took his cellphone and dialed to call Dr Dixon.

He was one of his bosses, and he had known him for a long time.

"Hey, Richard, good day. Yeah, I know it's early, and I know I'm about to go home. Wait, it's important.... Did you get to see the CDC anouncement? What are our instructions for this emergency?"

Jeff Marsh

Jeff just stared at the TV screen. Manhattan is burning to the ground at this very moment. His home, friends, his apartment, his whole life outside of what he had with him on this tour - he was most likely never going to see again. He knew he had to get out of there right away, this hospital was a powder keg waiting for a spark. He saw some motorcycle guy shove his way up to an attendant and he quickly followed in the path he created.

"If you can check on Jacob Roman too? I've been here for 3 hours and haven't heard anything." he said, adding on to the motorcycle guy's sentence. Trying to keep his temper in check, he knew how quickly situations like this could escalate.

"Junk" Masterson

Two old men sit watching the television as Governor O'Malley gives his speech. One is a heavy set gentleman hooked up to a dialysis machine, the other is a fit man that looks closer to 40 than his 61 years. "Hey Junk, you ever see any @#$% like this before?" The retired First Sergeant listens for a second and shakes his head. "Heard about that @#$% on the news yesterday. In our day it was the asians, now its the mexicans. Whole worlds gone crazy. It's alright, I got the solution sitting in the back of my Jeep." The man on dialysis laughs obnoxiously. "Same ol' Junk. Thanks for stopping by." Junk smiles back. "No worries, Chuck, you know us ol' leathernecks gotta stick together. I'll be back tomorrow or the next day... depending on when this @#$% blows over." Chuck looks back to Junk. "Stay safe out there..."

Junk steps out of the room thankful he has his backpack on him. He'd feel a hell of a lot better when he got back down to his jeep where his pistol and rifle were concealed along with all of his other essential gear. When he heard everything on the radio he made sure he put everything he needed in his jeep. Could never be too prepared. Or course, hearing what he heard now, he was anxious not being in it. He heads to the elevator.

Pvt 1st Class "Johnny" Murray
Murray was listening to his favored group that he grew up with as a teen, Rage Against The Machine. He kept to himself and silently murmured along with "Ashes in The Fall" hearing idle chatter from the rest of his squad:
"Hey did you hear the news?" Tony, a two month old recruit, replied in a light tone
" Yeah, and I don't like one bit of it," retorted Anthony, a nearing five year veteran.
Murray knew all about the fall of Boston, and to think that all it took was an army of "rioters". He could not put his finger on it, but there was something being kept under wraps, but what?
Johnny leaned back as much as he could in the little room he had on the APC. He had little time to loosen up, for the Sargent was already bellowing orders as the vehicle rolled to a stop:
Alright boys! I'm going to keep it real simple! Our job is to make sure none of the civvies here run off with anything! Understood?!
"SIR YES SIR!" The reply was in near unison and magnitude. Alpha Team filed out of the APC, and they saw it rumble away, off getting reinforcements. Johnny clasped his dog tags as he walked over to the relief station surrounded by what seemed to be the majority of the populace, begging and threatening to overtake the garrison of soldiers and procure the precious supplies. He felt somewhat empty, knowing that the end would be soon, and none would be able to remember their previous, carefree lives. He would never be able to finish his Master's degree and help people like he wanted to. Steeling himself, Johnny approaached the relief station.

Dan Cremshaw

Walking into the waiting room, Dan swerved off his course to the desk and instead just took a seat. A biker and some other dude were causing a commotion, and Dan wanted no part of that. He just wanted to visit his bud, and then go home.

He picked up one of the months old sports magazines lying around and began to thumb through it. He hoped he didn't have to wait long, he had to work tomorrow.

Bobkin walks into the emergency room in his full clown outfit, hanging off his shoulder is a girl looking a bit pale and exhausted. "Wow this is busy, going take forever to see anyone. I remember a few years back bringing two patients in when both had trouble appearing to walk.

The first patient was examined within the hour, had an x-ray and the same day was booked for surgery next week.

The second I took to my family doctor; after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment. After that it was another 8 weeks to see a specialist, then finally took them in for an x-ray, which wasn't reviewed for another week. So after 12 weeks was told I could book a surgery to hopefully help her sometime next month.

So the difference between the two patients?

The FIRST was my dog.
The SECOND was my mom when she was in her 80's and constantly telling people to get off her lawn.

Probably should have taken you to see a vet!" he winks at the lady on his shoulder, who despite trying not to crack a smile does summon the energy to lightly slap him for his comment. The 2 take a seat, Bob starts to head towards the desk to inquire if Gwyneth can see someone to quickly check her out, but seeing the commotion going on right now decides to just take a seat beside her and wait a bit.

Bayview ER Waiting Room
Jason pushed his way to the CSR (Customer Service Representative) and asked "Carlos Gutierrez, where is he? What’s his condition?" Before the woman could answer him, another man (Jeff Marsh) follows up right behind him, "If you can check on Jacob Roman too? I've been here for 3 hours and haven't heard anything." The woman stared at the two men as if to say Really?! There isn't enough commotion going on already?! but simply smiled and said, "I'll check right on that gentlemen. If you would kindly return to your seats, I'll have someone let you know their status as soon as possible."

Somewhere on the floor in Bayview Hospital
Edward could hear the his boss's sigh through the phone. "I know you've been there a long time Edward, but CDC and the Hopkins infrastructure are very clear on the protocols for this. We need all hands on deck for this one. The emergency department is likely to get flooded and they will need all the help we can muster. Since your normal shift is about over, once your relief arrives you can grab 40 winks if you'd like and report to the ER. Otherwise, just head on down there. See Sergio. He should be the chief attending now."

"Ok, don't worry. I thought this was going to happen, so down I go to save the day!! It's not like the world is ending or anything. We'll talk later, bye boss."

Edward chuckled. His boss hated his jokes (Like pretty much everyone else).
Some people called him the name of a certain tv doctor, but not in front of him. He hated that guy.

Edward ended his coffee and decided to go to the ER. As much as he disliked the situation, he knew Dixon was right.

"New York is gone. It's f****** gone. This is bad... Better get down there and see what happens."

Bayview ER
Edward arrives downstairs to find the ER in utter chaos. Beds with patients line the hallways outside the rooms and across from the nurses' station. Doctors, nurses, and clinical associates hurry past trying to administer to everyone but fall painfully short; there is simply too many patients for the staff to attend to properly. Standing out amongst the chaos, Edward spots a man who he assumes is Sergio. The man wears the lab coat and green scrubs of a doctor and his balding head and wrinkles show his age and the damage the years of working in an ER have done to him. He holds a pair of glasses in his left hand, using them to punctuate whatever it is he is saying to another attending who is standing in front of him. A clinical associate spots you. "Is there something I can help you with doctor?" Her question is curt and rushed.

Johnny saw the faces of hell as he stood watch over the aid station with the others. Despite being ordinary civilians, they were driven to the point where every bit of food and water mattered. The air was tense with the chance of a complete riot becoming inevitable. Johnny stands his ground and keeps the crowd from overtaking the station, hand already by his side, ready to draw if necessary

Jason looked like he didn’t give a damn whether there was commotion going on or not. Didn’t matter, she had no information to give. And things were about to get out of a control. There could be a riot, or worse any moment now. The hairs on the back of Jason’s neck were standing at attention. Something bad was going to happen, he felt it in his blood.

Jason looked over to Jeff. He was in the same position. A sick friend here at the hospital. Stuck here as well out of loyalty. Jason took a steady breath.

“I have a bad feeling about this. New York… the Southwest… and now here. I’m Jason. I know we just met and all, but I have a feeling we’re going to need friends in the next hour or so. You feel me?”

I work at the Internal Medicine Department."

Edward looked like a calm professional while he talked, but he was far from that.

The situation was bad. He had never seen the ER (Or any ER, for that matter) like that.

It looked like a Civil War hospital.

This is something out of a nightmare. I need a cigarette

But not now. He had work to do.

Outside NIA/GRC Building
Outside the National Institute on Aging/Gerontology Research Center (NIA/GRC) building, the crowd of survivors from Texas were getting restless. Medical aid was in short supply, the ER department was overtaxed and only the worst case patients were taken inside. The remainder were left in the shadow of the NIA research building. As the heat of the day increased, patience with the situation decreased and Johnny could feel the tension climbing along side the mercury in the thermometer. Looking across the street at the ER department, he could see things weren't any better over there. Patients and families were lined up outside waiting to get in and their temperament wasn't any better than the people under his gaze.
"Murray," Johnny's sergeant called out. "I need you to go over to the ER. Things are getting rowdy in their and the rent-a-cops are having a hard time keeping things sane. Show them what a little discipline can do for the character of a man."

Bayview ER Waiting Room
In the waiting room, tension continues to climb. Patients are trying to get in the front door to be seen but the number of people in the waiting room makes it difficult for them to even reach the registration desk. Jeff and Jason are continuously jostled as people try to move around. Across from the registration desk sits a security guard leaning on a portable podium, using it as a shield from the press of bodies. To his left is the entrance to the waiting room where you all are now. In that area are three (now empty) vending machines. To his right is the entrance to the triage error. The three beds there, normally unused, each have a patient lying down on them waiting to be seen. Both triage nurses work feverishly to triage all the patients who have come to the ER (both locally and from the Texas transports).
In between the registration desk and the triage room, a set of double doors leads into the hallway that goes to the emergency room itself. As the doors open and close, waiting patients eagerly wait to hear their names called and families wait to hear news of loved ones who have already been called into the ER. Again, the doors open and another patient is discharged, leaving with her family. One man, tired of waiting to be called, grabs his son and darts through the door. His actions do not go unnoticed as the security guard jumps up and chases him, calling for backup on his walkie-talkie.

Bayview Emergency Room Department
The CA flashes Edward a smile, "Bless you for coming down Doctor Pickett. It has been horrible in here. As if we don't have enough patients of our own, the army has been sending in patients from fiasco in Texas. Its terrible whats going on there. Some of those people are even DOA. I have no idea what they think we're going to be able to do. We can barely take care of our own." You see that things have obviously been traumatic and she is barely holding on. "Sergio is right there." She indicates the doctor who you assumed to be Sergio. Hearing his name he turns his head slightly towards you while continuing to listen to the other doctor.

Sergio gives Edward an exasperated look. "Wherever you would like to start Dr. Pickett. I have far more patients here than the safe ratio calls for and we have plenty more lower priority patients, triage wise, outside and across the street." "Sir," Murray responded shortly after Sarge gave him the new orders. Johnny had already assumed that the forces around the area were on the verge of breaking to the mass populace of Texas refugees. Wasting no time, Johnny weaves his way through the crowds, keeping tabs on his weapons and ammo in the case a resident decided to take any of his equipment. Proceeding through the doors to the ER department, Murray barely percieved a security guard already on the move. As Johnny rounds the corner of the Nurses' station and Doctor Edward, a nurse comes running back down the hall from where the screams originated, presumably she was the source. Her scrubs are covered in blood, whose is difficult to tell as she has one hand to her neck as blood trickles from between her fingers yet there is more blood present than would come from her wound. She is sobbing uncontrollably, "He was dead, he was dead. How did he get off the bed?"
As everyone stands there shocked or trying to help the nurse, shuffling is heard from the hallway. A slow steady shuffling as if someone was dragging something behind them and they were in no hurry to get where they were going. Looking down the hall, a patient appears around the bend at the end. He is covered in blood, both fresh and dried. Fresh blood covers his mouth. He says nothing as he slowly walks towards the nurses' station dragging his left leg behind him. The nurse sees him and redoubles her screams.

Bayview ER Waiting Room
A soldier enters the emergency room moving with purpose when he notices the man dart into the E.R. with the security guard right behind him. Following the two, the soldier charges through the crowd into the E.R. as Jeff, Jason, and Bob watch. Within seconds, a scream echoes out of the E.R. and everyone waiting tenses. As one, patients and waiting family look at one another. That was not the scream of someone in pain, that was the scream of someone terrified for their life.

Edward cursed in his mind, seeing that all hope of controling the situetion had gone out of the window.

"My god, so much blood... that's major vessel damage"

Edward quickly took a pair of gloves and put them on, and looked around for something (A bandage, a cloth, anything) to apply pressure to the wound.

The surgeons were going to have fun fixing that.

But Edward was shocked by the nurse's scream when she saw the patient.

"What the... Was that hematemesis? or did he...?"

Edward stood for a second, in disbelief.

Had the patient bitten the nurse????

Seeing Johnny go closer to the patient, Edward says

Bob, Jeff, and Jason try to push through the throng of people exiting the ER waiting room in a panic. Across from the doors in the neighboring building's lot, soldiers are firing on patients they appear to be acting in a hostile manner.

Bayview ER Department
Edward is barely able to finish the bandage properly as the nurse is unable to contain herself. She shakes and lurches as the patient approaches, all the while muttering, "He was dead, he was dead. The doctor pronounced him. I was taking him to holding so the coroner's office could take him. He was dead, I know it!" she screams. The nurses, torn between Edward's command and their duty to the patient and the hysterical scream of their friend and co-worker, hesitate in approaching the patient.
The security guard shakes his head at Johnny, "No sir, lost him in the commotion. Here," he pulls a walkie-talkie out of his back pocket, "Its already set to the band the nurses are using outside. Just have to turn it on." Which he does as he hands it over to Johnny. "I hate the chatter," he shrugs. As the walkie-talkie comes to life, screams erupt from the its mic. Outside the Waiting Room

“What the hell!” Jason shouts as gunfire opens up on them. “Back in the building! Get out of their line of sight!” He bursts back into the Emergency Room. Screw security, screw it all. He starts forcing his way through. He needed to get to the garage and get the hell out of here.

One moment he was checking on his friend… the next moment he’s trying to help three other people evade massacre by the United States Armed Forces. The world was falling apart. People were losing it.

“Let’s move, move move!”

Map of Johns Hopkins Bayview Campus
http://www.baydragons.com/attachments/JHBayview.jpg

Just the area around the Emergency Room:
http://www.baydragons.com/attachments/JHBayview_ER.jpg

"E" marks the Emergency Room area. There is a parking lot right where the "E" is. There are 3 handicap parking spots, 2 police only parking spots and 2 reserved for doctor spots. The remainder of the parking lot is for ambulances. No one in the group is parked there. The upside-down triangle marks an entrance to the building. Everyone attempting to leave the ER waiting room is trying to get out the doorway to the left of the "E". The gunfire is coming from across the street in the lot in front of the NIA/GRC building. The parking garage where everyone is parked is a 3 level parking garage to the right of the hospital on the map. There is also a parking lot to the left of the hospital on the map.
If you parked in the Mid-Campus parking lot, you would have accessed the ER by walking a pathway that runs in front of Building B and then walked in the ER entrance. If you parked in the garage, you would have accessed the ER by either walking along a path that runs along side the hospital and entered the ER entrance or entered through the Bayview Medical Offices and worked your way through the 1st Floor of the hospital, taken an elevator to the Main Floor of the hospital and entered the ER from the side. The easiest route would be taking the path along the side.
In the real world, under normal operating procedures, visitors to the ER park in front of the NIA/GRC building, put that parking lot is being used by the military for the evacuees.

OOC: Do I listen the gunfire and screams through the mic?

Edward froze when he saw the soldier jump on the patient. He barely had a second to let the nurse under the care of her companions and take a step forward.

What was the soldier doing? Was he going to kill a sick man??

"Wait! Don't use that knife! Are you insane?!?!"

Bobkin did not know what to think. He didn't really want to run back into the hospital, after all he had no idea what caused that scream, but it sounded pretty terrible. Still inside all he had was to deal with was the fear of the unknown, outside he had to deal with real bullets. Nothing inside could be worse than bullets right? Without giving it anymore though Bobkin will follow Jason (though staying a bit behind him)

In the Emergency Room
Johnny lashes out with a kick to the shambling patient:
Brawling+Dex: [roll0] vs. Difficult 9 Task
Followed by a knife thrust to the [roll1] chest:
Weapon Use+Dex-Multiple: [roll2] vs. Difficult 9 Task
pinning the patient to the floor. Disturbingly, the patient does not cry out in pain; in fact he seems frustrated, feverishly grasping for Johnny and simply moaning and grunting. Everyone in the ER goes silent, shocked by Johnny's brutal attack on the man, unsure of what to do as this was also the same person who brutally assaulted a nurse.
The tension is broken by the screams of panic coming from the other side of the wall, the same wall that is shared by a corridor to and from the ER waiting room.
Edward:

OOC: Do I listen the gunfire and screams through the mic?
You are not sure. With the noise and commotion going on in the ER, you think you heard screams and gunfire, but you just aren't sure that your hearing and fatigue are not playing tricks with you.

Outside the ER
Jason, Jeff, and Bob rush back down the main corridor that feeds the hospital to the ER department. Movement is slow as the group runs down the hallway getting into each others way more than anything due to the panic that everyone feels. You pass a short hall to the left that ends in a double door marked "Exit Only - ER." Shortly after that is a double glass sliding door that leads out into a large vestibule where another double glass sliding door opens to the Mid-Campus parking lot. Some of the mob cram themselves through the glass doors and try to exit to the parking lot, slowed by the automatic doors themselves that have no sense of urgency. The corridor itself continues till it turns left.

I'm trying to slow you guys down while things play out in the ER.

"Dammit, what do we do? If we stay in here we are at the mercy of the mob, and outside soldiers are shooting people! Maybe theres someplace we can hide until this whole thing resolves itself? Or maybe bust out a window or something?" Jeff says, voice tinged with more then a little fear.

Panic in the Waiting Room

"You're right. All these people just make us one big moving target. But we can't just sit around. For all we know, the troops will move in here and kill us all." Jason notices the automatic doors blocking the way.

"Take the door down! Come on Jeff... time to be a bad ass." He shouts... yeah, it's encouraging the mob, but dammit... the quicker they clear out the quicker his group can escape. Jason grabs one of the chairs from the ground and tries to make his way through the mob. He intends to break down those doors.

Johnny pulls away from the deranged patient and looks to the doctor "The patient is detained, sir, now the nurses can apply sedatives and take...it away" He looks grimly and the injured nurse "I'm sorry, but unless you wish to be like your once dead patient, you will need to be sedated as well" ( I wish to use Johnny's Medicine skill to convince the doctor(Edward) that this is no ordinary disease and all afflicted with it must be quarantined)

Johnny attempts to adjust the frequency of the walkie talkie to the military band and wishes to communicate with his sargent This is Private First Class Jonathan Murray! If there are any superior officers on this frequency, please respond!, repeat, please respond! I have an unidentified hostile pinned at the moment, but I do not know for how long! Requesting immediate quarantine!Whatever these things are! they are no longer human! This is Murray, over and out!" Johnny then goes to Edward and salutes " I apoligise for the current situation, sir, and will do everything in my power to see you and the staff of this hospital safe, until reinforcements arrive, we need to dig in somewhere that is away from the crowd, any ideas?"

Out of Character: Will Johnny be able to retrieve his knife after the nurses sedate the patient?

Edward froze. The soldier had... Pinned the patient to the floor using his knife? And the patient was responding only by moaning and trying to get him?

That was not normal.

Looking to the Emergency Room boss, Edward sees that he is as surprised as he is.

"Well... Yes. Erm... Maam, I think I'll give you a sedative, and don't worry, everything is going to be fine."

"Who am I kidding, New York is in shambles, and we are going to end up like that in any second."

Hearing the screams, Edward decides to use them as an excuse to think about what he just saw.
"What is going on outside?"

Edward aproaches a window to look. He needed to think. And he really needed that smoke.

My hypothesis is this is a differing strain of a rabies virus, and with the nurse being afflicted as well, it is only so long before she becomes....savage. In conclusion, we need to either lock down this area or move to a safer location, away from the chaos. I ask again, do you have any ideas where we can go?"

"Have you ever heard about or seen a "post-mortem" reanimation" before? Do you know anything about this other than what the media has said?
If a disease caused that (And I'm not saying it is), it could be anything. It would be a completely new disease.

Now, I don't think he revived. He probably was unconscious, the nurse thought he was dead (It can happen) and made something that woke up and scared the patient. Now, his resistance to pain is... Unnerving, but there are other explanations.

If you want to evacuate, talk to Dr Sergio."

(Edward points at him)

"He is the boss here. I'm just the guy who patches people up. And ideas... I'll get to see what can I do to send some of this people home, and if I ever get out of here, I'll head for my apartment and hide there."

Murray then goes over to Sergio and salutes "Private First Class Jonathan Murray reporting, how can I assist you?"

I'm going to try and put a rough map up on the board tonight or tomorrow to show the layout of the ER area. Suffice it to say, from the waiting room, there is one hallway into the ER itself. The hall Jason, Jeff , and Bob are in runs parallel to the ER. Once you go through the hall to the ER, think of an "H". There are rooms along the left, right, and upper parts of the "H." The lower part of the "H" is the nurses' desk. The lower right leg of the "H" leads into the waiting room. The lower left leg leads to the ambulance lot. If you draw the middle bar out further to the left, it is a hallway that leads out into the hospital proper (--H). There is a hall that connects the two upper legs of the "H" together and then goes to the right to connect to the hall Jason, Jeff, and Bob are in.
Sorry its real crude but I will try to something better done on graph paper since there are no floor plans available. Johnny and Edward are on the left side of the "H" in the lower leg where the nurses' station is. The patient is pinned to the floor in the upper left leg of the "H". Jason, Jeff, and Bob are outside in the hallway next to the door that leads into the ER. This is a card swipe door; you would either have to have an ID card to let you in or wait till someone comes out.

Back to the story already in progress...

In the ER
One of the nurses rushes over and hands Edward a hypodermic with a sedative. She takes the other hypodermic needle that she had and cautiously approaches the patient pinned to the floor. Seeing her approach, he begins thrashing and clutching for her. Being used to non-compliant patients, she slips past his attempts to grab her and injects the sedative into his arm. Finished, she backs away quickly and waits for the sedative to take affect.
Johnny approaches Sergio who appears to be completely out of his element. "Evacuate?! Hell no. The patient is obviously a drug addict. That would explain the level of stimuli he can endure. And as for deceased, obviously someone made an incorrect conclusion. The patient is obviously not deceased. We will not evacuate, we will not quarantine. Everyone get back to work, we have patients who need our help."
Meanwhile, the nurse who administered the injection is calling for Sergio's and Edward's attention. "Doctors, the sedative did not work!" The patient is still thrashing on the ground, pinned by Johnny's knife.

OCC: I'm trying to get the ER room moved along to the same point in time as the riot outside. Please be patient.

Johnny's hand balled up as he heard Sergio speak, clearly he does not see the facts, This person is not human anymore Remaining calm, Johnny responds firmly "Sir, if this patient was an addict, they would at least be coherent enough to talk and walk, this" he points to the patient "Is a monster that just took a normally fatal blow and just ignored it, no human on Earth would ever deny being stabbed, they would at least say if it hurt. Also, last I checked outside, good honest men are gunning down all in sight, we need to be rational and leave! We can't save anyone if we die here!

Edward had decided to finish the care of the bitten nurse before continuing, but heard the call of the nurse who tried to sedate the patient.

"The sedative did not work?? What is going on here? What if the soldier is right? I don't believe in ghost stories, but the patient IS pinned to the floor.
Through his chest. By a knife.

AND sedated.

AND appears to be trying to attack us.

Still.

This will be something to tell my grandchildren about."
Covering the doubts in his voice, Edward said:

"Doctor Sergio, I'll check the patient. We'll finish this nonsense about walking dead right now!"

He aproached the nurse who sedated the patient. before continuing,

"What do you mean it didn't work? Let me see..."

Edward aproaches the patient, and tries to see what he is doing.

OOC: Any rolls needed for perception? I'm looking for something that would be specifically abnormal, such as signs of death.

Difficult Task (7) {Perception (4) + First Aid (5) = No roll necessary.}

Given the coloring of his skin, the size and location of the bite marks on his shoulder and neck and the amount of dried blood around the bite marks and across his body, this man should have died from exsanguination. The deathly palor of his skin is the most telling. He should not be breathing and most certainly not walking. That prompts Edward to look again and realize the man isn't breathing. There is no rise or fall of his chest.

Johnny was trained to his limits ina any sort of situation, but nothing like this.

"I'm... Breathless. Like the patient. Because he is not breathing. Plus, he is not really bleeding anymore... He should be dead. And..."

He looks at the patient, as he tries to attack him.

" I don't think it's safe to look for a pulse. My God, you must be right!!"

Edward resisted the urge to aproach and examine the patient more throughly.

"We need to do something about this. If this man's condition is contagious..."

Edward looks at Sergio.
He was exhausted, even more exhausted than him.

But he was the boss of the ER.
He needed to act. He had to do something, evacuate the ER, something. The patient was dangerous, and maybe other patients too.
And they had no time to think.

"Doctor Sergio, you must see this!!! Please come!"

And then he realized it.
"If the man's condition is contagious... And walking dead started to attack the living and turning them into more walking dead by biting.... It could explain what has been going on in the past 48 hours!"

Johnny could already tell what Edward was thinking. Stepping over to him, he responds gently "Do you see the reason now for a quarantine? We may be able to snuff out this creature and prevent a national epidemic, all we have to do is close the area off, and get more support against this threat. With luck, this will all get cleaned up. Until that day comes, we need to stand on our own two feet and get a move on! The other soldiers outside won't be as civil as I am!"

"No. There may have been a reason for a quarantine two, maybe three days ago. Now the south is lost and New York looks like July 4th.
This man is not Patient One. He was probably bitten like the nurse, look at his bitemarks.

He came from outside, and would probably tell us what is going on in the south if he could talk.

We should try to quarantine the ones we find, but we will not prevent the epidemy. It's already happening."

Suddenly, his mind snapped.
He talked to the nurse in a low voice, almost a hiss.

"Do we have any other patients with bitemarks?"

Edward couldn't hide the fear in his voice.

"Since I'm not recieving any response from my squad, that means no backup, which means It is just you, me, and Sergio against the world," Johnny took a step back and sighed We need priorities first, food and a clean water source,Dr.Sergio, is there any non perishable goods, bottled water, anything, please where is it?" In the ER
As Johnny is scanning the rooms, it becomes clear to him that only some of the patients are here for bites and attacks. Most of the patients are here for normal concerns and issues. Scanning the rooms in the back of the ER (this would be the upper right of the "H" I described earlier), Johnny sees the growing amount of people rushing past in the hallway outside the ER. Another scream, this time from the opposite side of the ER from him (this would be along the middle bar extended to the left of the "H"). Johnny and Edward both hear the nurse exclaiming, "He was dead, he was dead. The paramedics pronounced him DOA."

Outside the ER
People are trampling over one another trying to get out of the building into the mid-campus parking lot. A security guard inside the vestibule attempts to calm the crowd down and assist the people who are getting trampled in the mad stampede of bodies however his efforts are in vain.

((OCC: What route are you going to take? 1) The doors out to the mid-campus parking lot; 2) The doors into the emergency room; or 3) The hallway past the exit and to the left which leads further into the hospital.))
