Hello :)

Been lurking from the sidelines for a few weeks and you guys seem like you could be able to help, and have gotten me good info indirectly already :D

Very simple, i want to create a wizard that casts BOATLOADS of spells. Thats it, optimization isnt really all that important, but being powerful doesnt hurt .

Anyone able to give me a few pointers? I've got pretty much all the books at my disposal, except for most of the campaign specific stuff(Eberron, Faerūn and so on).

Thanks in advance

You mean tons of different spells available to cast or tons of spell slots to cast from or tons of spells cast in a round?

So you want tons of spell slots?

The simplest way to do this is to be a Specialist wizard (Choose a school of magic to specialize in and two to bar. You cannot learn any from the barred schools, but you gain an extra spell slot to prepare a spell of your specialized school). To enhance this further, take the focused specialist alternate class feature from Complete Mage (Sacrifice your familiar and a "general" spell slot per level, gain two extra specialist spell slots per level).

Other options include the Theruge path: The Mystic Theruge which simultaneously advanced divine and arcane spellcasting at the cost of making it harder to reach the higher levels of spellcasting before level 20, or the Ultimate Magus which advances prepared arcane casting (Wizard) with spontaneous arcane casting (Sorceror, Warmage, Beguiler, Bard).

Or just have a rediculously high spellcasting ability score for bonus spells (like 40 or higher). :smalltongue:

also consider "elven generalist (RoTW) + domain wizard (UA)" for boatloads of spell slots without sacrificing schools (as per the focused specialist)

The wording of the Elven Generalist confused me a little: Do they only gain a single bonus spell slot for their highest spell level and thus lose it when they gain a higher level, or do they gain one for every level like they had specialised in being generalised, if that makes sense?

Elven Generalist Wizard / Rainbow Servant. Using text beats table, that allows you full Wizard and Cleric spells (might be expensive though, so a Blessed Book or two would help). Go crazy.

Oh should have been a bit more specific, didnt actually know i could cast more than a single spell per turn, how? :smallamused:

And i meant a big amount of spell slots, variance need not apply.

Am i reading Domain Wizard correctly? its just strictly better than a normal wizard?

EDIT: Oh and also reading into this Elven Generalist/Rainbow servant thing, seems pretty cool

Illithid Savant (Savage Species) is, of course, the most effective means; but if you bring IS to a game your DM should smack you on the head.

I prefer Grey Elf Generalist Domain Wizard, fewer spells than Focused Specialist but far more versatility.

Probably your best choice for extra effective spell slots is Shapechange; there are a truly absurd number of spells that one monster or another has as an SU ability. Just take Teleport, Hound Archons (as one example) have greater teleport as an SU ability; once you have Shapechange you shouldn't be preparing Teleport more than once (if that and only for emergencies). Or the Nightmare, that has Astral Projection and Etherealness as SU's.

You should also look at getting a use activated resetting trap of Mage's Lubrication to carry around in a portable hole or Bag of Holding. That is unlimited 5th level or lower spell slots.

EDIT: Yes, Domain wizards are strictly better than straight wizards.

And don't try the Rainbow Servant trick, no DM allows it.

EDIT 2: As for how to cast multiple spells in a round, there are tons of ways. Time Stop gives you 5 rounds of effective actions (although you can't directly attack with them), Quicken gives you another spell, Celerity let's you pick up another spell (you can actually do Quickened Spell, regular spell, Celerity, Regular spell to get 3 spells on the enemy in a single turn), Shapechange into a Choker for an extra standard action per turn, Shapechange into a Chronotyne for an extra complete set of actions per turn, use Craft Contingent Spells set to go off at your target when you cast a spell, those are all just off the top of my head.

Well, we played with a DM with several years of experience and he only banned Psionics, all other books were open. The DM we are playing with now, well its his first time so hes letting us play whatever classes we want bar psionics but restricting races to PHB.

But it looks like ill have to go crazy with some metamagic feats and shapechanging :)

EDIT: Im reading up on Celerity and i dont really get the point, you cast a spell so you get to cast another spell? The parts with getting a move action i get, and its pretty good, but i fail to see how i gets me more spells
