Like tic tac toe but with chess pieces that can move and capture normally.

How many pieces does each person start with? Where do they start? What does the board look like?

Amazing idea! Now if you'd just get everything in your head(including rules and such) onto a post we COULD ACTUALLY CRITIQUE IT.

hmm, this could be interesting.

Two phases: placement and resolution.

During the placement phase, you place chess pieces (no pawns) on the board, the same as tic tac toe. You do this until the board is full. If either player gets 3 of the same color in a row, they win immediately, but this should never happen. It just establishes a fixed pattern for positions.

During the resolution phase, players make moves using the regular chess rules on the 3/3 board. Only moves that capture another piece are legal. If a player has no legal moves, they must pass their turn, but if their opponent's move frees up a move for them they can take it on their next turn. The game ends when neither player has a legal move. The person with the most pieces wins.

Does that work? I would want to play some rounds to get a feel for it. It should have a lot of variability, with the amount of possible combinations of pieces.

Edit: The person who goes first in the placement phase goes second in the resolution phase. This trades off the advantage of taking the middle with a powerful piece (like the queen) with the disadvantage of probably losing it immediately. The person who places first also has a piece advantage, which needs to be mitigated somehow.

You might want to relax the restriction on pieces needing to capture. This adds to the possibility of a stalemate but increases the possible moves each player can make.

I think the OP wants us to invent his game for him.

Edit: @Nich Critic
What if each player started the game with 1 piece in play (say, a king), and each turn you could either add a piece to the board on any open spot, or move any existing piece.

Well, then you would have a very different game . Are you still trying for checkmate in that case?
