Welcome, currently ponified banterites, to the 176th Random Banter! Come in, lay your hooves on the expensive furniture, and banter away like the newest edition of The Foal Free Press came out.:smallwink:

The Previous Random Banter, the Septaquintaquinquecentennial Banter itself, was held here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235950).
Rules of these Honorable Halls
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Ah. Well, stop doing that and post nonsense like the rest of us.:smalltongue:

Sherlock Holmes was a cool movie. A bit confusing, the ending explained most of the weird things though. I knew that the rain was weird, so I was all "haha!" when Holmes explained the spontaneous combustion thing. Ending had a very Batman Begins vibe to it, but since instead of it just being "boom, calling card of Joker" we had Moriarty already do things in the movie. Anyways, it was funny and the naked Holmes handcuffed to a bed scene was just as completely strange as I thought it was when I saw the ads.:smallsigh:

LaLa, I'm mostly sore from the extended period of shoveling; it took a couple hours before I felt noticeably fatigued, and I kept going after that. I don't recall you mentioning shoveling for 5 hours at a time. Also, I'm not sure, but I suspect a shovel-full of dirt is more dense than one of non-melting snow.

Mmm...I'd have to disagree with you there. I don't remember shovelling snow being a particularly difficult task...though the only time I've ever shovelled dirt was for a grave, but I think it was harder than snow. Shovelfuls weigh about the same, if only because melting snow is denser than loose dirt. But getting the dirt in the first place is a chore. =P

Grave digging, that sounds depressing...
Fortunately, I've managed to avoid shoveling dirt for graves, though I have shoveled quite a few wheelbarrows worth of dirt over the years.

I remember when we had to dig a series of trenches in our yard so our house wouldn't keep flooding. We even put it into a small wall.
Most of that's eroded away by now, but you can still see where the trench was and where the wall stood.
Makes mowing really annoying.

Was for my puppy. =\

...well...she wasn't a puppy anymore, but she was a small dog. Was...very sad. Dun like thinking about it. Was a couple years ago.

We have a tractor with a loader, so luckily, we haven't really had to deal with that for any yard projects. Hardest thing I've ever had to move by hand was...roughly a ton in gravel. And that was more time consuming than anything else.

Mowing the lawn gives me nightmares. ._. We live on 45 acres of land, it's justified. =P

When it's sprinkling and you're moving the dirt from a driveway into the backyard?
Also, an hour and a half (which included a shower) after I stopped working, my arms were basically back to normal. Of the three people shoveling, I was the only person who wasn't still bothered/complaining about their muscles when I left about 3 hours later.

I managed to avoid burial detail when one of our cats died about three years ago.

I've never had to move a tonne of anything at once, but if you add it all up over time, it's probably a lot. Which reminds me... I need to finish shifting that pile of dirt. (That is going to be so annoying because it's overgrown with grass)
And I've never had to shovel snow. One of the virtues of living in Queensland. You never have to worry about snow.

Our yard isn't very big, just a standard suburban lot, but it's really uneven and my brothers seem to think they can keep cars there.
But forty-five acres... That's justifiably nightmare inducing. Which is why I flatly told my mother that if we ever move up to Proston we aren't getting anywhere that big because caring for it would fall on my shoulders.

Collecting lawn mowers isn't that strange.
Over here in Australia, we had a show on the ABC, we might even still have it, called Collectors.

There was one person on it who collected miscellaneous blue things she found lying around.
Though, admittedly, they were rather pretty when she arranged them on white shelves. It was a rather nice contrast...

And I know what it is to have crazy relatives. Most of the people I'm related to are utterly mad. In a good way.

Yha, I haven't shoveled for 5 hours in a row, but I'm aaaaalmost sure that snow is heavier then dirt, depending on when you're shoveling and where.

I doubt it. Simple physics comes into play here--the constituent chunks of dirt are denser than water (try putting some in a water-filled container--it'll sink once all the air has come out), so unless dirt is less densely packed than snow (which seems unlikely) the shovelfull of dirt will be heavier than the snow.

HEY COBRA YOU RUINING THE SILLINESS OF YOUTUBE JOKE SHUSHIE! ONLY MODERATELY VAGUE HINTS!:smallwink:

How do I vague hint at something I CAN'T SEE? =P

April Fools on a Sunday *sigh*

AND I have today off work (for a rare change) so there is absolutely NOBODY for me to prank!

I must perpetrate any pranks electronically via Facebook, but I can't come up with any good Facebook pranks.

Help me people! Help me! I can't go through this most glorious day of the year without playing some sort of trick on someone.

Hmm...I can't remember...ever having a good prank pulled off on me. That's a bit disappointing, in retrospect...

...and all the things I keep coming up with are really depressing. Wow. I am not cut out for humor.

...is it ok if an April Fool's prank makes someone want to kill you when they find out it's a joke? The first thing that came to mind was discussing with someone feelings of being suicidal, waiting for them to think it was just a prank in poor taste, and then faking a suicide and having them stumble upon it. Wow. I am a horribly cruel person. And I think about suicide too much. =\

Sorry if that offended anyone. Am I allowed a free pass at making jokes about suicide if I actively consider it on a regular basis?

Hmm, I suppose it might be browser-dependent, or something like that. Probably has something to do with in which order the HTML-tags are read...

Say, what colour is the link underline in for you, because to me it's white (transparent didn't work out as intended).

It's doing ok today. I was still mostly going from the earlier ones, so not quite at the point where I needed more. Of course, then I went up and stood for too long folding and putting away laundry that's been clean for like a week and a half staring at me because it's been hurting too much for me to do yet. So then there were pain-killers to be had!

Also, I've finally been smart and put the hinge brace back on. Annoying though it is, it does keep me from overdoing it. Thank you for trying to catch me before I went up though

Google Chrome, should be most up to date version, and the underline and text is just standard forum-default black.

This is how it should look, yes. For the record, the secret link is "error" (for those of you who were to lazy to scroll over it), which conveniently leads to the giantitp 404 page.

Also, it appears that Chrome is the black sheep of the browser herd. It probably has some weird way of prioritising colour and/or underlining tags.

EDIT: Just checked on Safari on my iTouch. The rainbow works fine, bit bizarrely, the underline on error is in a shade of grey that varies depending on the zoom level - the more I zoom in, the lighter it becomes, until it get white as intended.

It's the anxiousness of where could it be, and accidentally touching it, not to mention I live in one of the only two countries left with the bubonic plague.

I've got a random question.

There's a fallacy that states that if someone doesn't hold to your views, it doesn't necessarily mean they hold to views totally opposite yours. That is, if they don't think A, it doesn't have to mean that they think Z, totally precluding the possibility of B through Y.

Does anyone know what that fallacy is called, and where I would be able to find its formal breakdown? Google has failed me once again.

Somehow I don't think that's a fallacy...

For example, if there are four cake recipes to choose from; a caramel mud cake, a cinnamon tea cake, a chocolate mud cake and a carrot cake; and you choose to make the caramel mud cake, but your friend wants to make the chocolate mud cake, their view on the matter is different to yours, but hardly opposite.

My use of negators are a bit confusing, I suppose. I thought I made it as clear as possible, but perhaps not.

I think you got that a bit wrong. What I think he means is that if you want to bake cake A, and your friend doesn't want to bake cake A, you instantly assume that he hates cake and is an inhuman being, which would be quite a fallacy indeed.

The closest I get from Wikipedia's list of fallacies is the straw man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man), but that one is more general and more about intentionally misinterpretting your opponents position in order to make it easier to attack. Perhaps a subset of denying the antecedent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denying_the_antecedent) (wanting to bake cake A implies that you like cake and are a human being, you don't want to bake cake A, ergo you don't like cake and aren't a human being (there's an incorrect premise in there as well, but still)).

I've been rereading Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality.

How did Invisibles the Text monster win the fashion contest? I don't understand.

I believe it was that her team 'played dead' and if a stun blast went near them, they went down even if they weren't hit. The first battle of the 5th graders is the one where Harry and Draco just kinda focus on each other, right?:smallconfused: I might be confusing it with a different battle, but I think that's the first one.

(Also, please stop reading it now before you suffer.:smalltongue: It's OK in the beginning, but once Harry starts making Neandrathal patronasus(Yeah, spoiler tags ruin the white text, so what, sorry. :P) and its barely past Christmas...:smallannoyed: I'm sorry, but even 8 first years SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE DOWN A 7th YEAR, NO MATTER HOW MANY GAMES OF DODGEBALL THEY PLAY. Eh. I blame the language. :smalltongue:

So, whatever I said, but the opposite of all that. That's what I want. Which apparently doesn't exist. Yet.

English is a silly language.
I even know of a poem about it...
I'll see if I can find it.

And here it is:

We’ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Then shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Let’s face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren’t invented in England.
We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes,
we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,
and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing,
grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham?
Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend.
If you have a bunch of odds and ends
and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English
should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?
We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same,
while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language
in which your house can burn up as it burns down,
in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

And, in closing, if Father is Pop, how come Mother’s not Mop?

AND IF PEOPLE FROM POLAND ARE CALLED POLES THEN PEOPLE FROM HOLLAND SHOULD BE HOLES AND THE GERMANS, GERMS

I can't remember the title or the author's name...

Well, little is known about the writing systems used in Equestria...
Yes, English characters are seen. However, ponies can often be seen reading from right to left if I remember correctly.
And it is hard to write or type without fingers...
So I'm going to assume that the ponies use a few different scripts for different purposes.
Kind of like Heiroglyphics and Demotic.

Elemental

Well, according to my understanding of what mashing keys mean, you kind of can't do it if they're that large.

Mashing keys ends up with this result:
HEEIOrhjsdfio!@#

If a pony were faced with a keyboard from our world, that is most likely to be the result, until they learn to adjust.
Seems odd that they're capable of playing the piano and various stringed instruments...

Isn't it obvious? They're writing in machine language. What looks like a spacebar is actually a linefeed button.

I guess they're coding the advanced algorithms that their computers require in order to make sense of the highly limited input that pony keyboards produce (i.e. the pony version of T9).

This looks uncomfortable, but the more comfortable alternative I came up with only had three positions (Diagonal left, vertical, diagonal right) only codes for 21 symbols. But really, turning a foot entirely around in the middle of a character is just...awkward.

You're supposed to hop, like a nimble little dinosaur. Alternatively use a stamp. So left button is stamp, right button changes direction. The characters would not simply go left to right while being typed though I suppose. It would go:

135
246...

perhaps?

At this point though, morse is considerably simpler. Like I said at the beginning!

I believe, if I understand you correctly, that you're going for the Either Or Fallacy.

If I like Cake, then you Do Not Like Cake. There is no room for "I enjoy cake but not all the time" or "Cake is eh".

Huh. Good to know. But would you recommend reading just the first book?

Today I found out why they call the Uni's medical staff vampires.

I had a scheduled laboratory appointment, give samples, get blood taken out and fill a questionnaire about STDs, addictions and medical histories, everything is fine until the blood samples come up.

I have thin veins, which means that doctors have to prod around sticking needles repeatedly until they find a suitable spot, this means blood samples are not so much painful but rather time taking tasks. This time it only took two needles to find the vein. He cottons me up, reads up a small chart and goes again to my veins. As the needle enters, he commends me for donating blood, to which I tell him to check if that chart is mine. He takes the needle out and apologizes and throws out the barely collected sample, he then asks me If I'd like to donate blood, to what I said I would, and before I finish my sentence the needle is in, to which I tell him that I can't because I'm not legally able to consent. And hell breaks loose.

Half an hour latter I finally get out of the Uni's health centre.

Pretty sure it was a doctor (or probably one of the senior med students from over another Uni which has weird ties with mine), there are only two nurses overall, it's overstaffed with doctors, which may be the most insane imbalance I've ever seen.

Aside from my overly critical criticism, good god that is a terrible place to get a blood test. I remember getting about a dozen blood tests in one month, and all the tests needed new, fresh, 11 year old blood. And not a little bit of blood, it'd be about 20 minutes each time just sitting there waiting after they finally get the blood to go up the tube-thing . And then a few days after that I had a biopsy. Really, magic shouldn't be so unlike everything else humans do. All of sudden, these two muggle born first years (that is what, 6th grade or so?) revolutionize Transfiguration when most of them cant turn a rodent to a teacup, convince the school to have publicized magic-ultra dodge ball and start it with first years, and Quirrel has this "oh god muggles are all evil, but apparently the fact they can do this space stuff I practically worship means nothing about them not being the worst that humanity can possibly be". All of this while Harry has a creepy KKK thing with Draco to convince him that pureblood superiority is bad with SCIENCE that still doesn't make any damn sense. Being able to grab any kind of moral from this story beyond "death scares the author intensely so he loves cryogenics", "worship modern humanism and ignore all the well honed tradition humanity has made to better itself", and "take history literally" is a feat. /ends rant, runs out of breath, pants. My flawed argument awaits the brutal tearing it will get, but still. Yeah, you can't start off conquering empires, you need to start colonizing unconquered planets and after getting enough spice trade set, running of your nuke running operation, and probably ally with the grox, which gets you epic bonuses and trade. Problem is that in Spore, you don't get the Bomb until you've conquered some cities. The Laser is too slow, the Pulse... don't even bother, and the Proton Missile is anti-turret-or-ship-only. Planet Busters don't leave you anything to take over.

The bomb icon in my weapons list is the Orbs of Doom. It's a new weapon added by the mod, and you start with it. Leaves an airborne tiny light behind you, and if an enemy hits it or enough time passes, it explodes. No good against cities, as you can't get close enough...

It's pretty good against the huge swarms that seem to have glitched in or however they appeared, but there's so many that I'd need to bankrupt myself on Energy Packs if I was to get anything done after I finished with the swarm. And they seem to regenerate.

Are you sure planet buying doesn't count?

I remember not having many issues getting weaponry early on, though I attacked T0 colonies or terraformed into T0 to kill cities. Some more hours into it and you'll be begging for the terraformers to be on sale.

Space Phase is fun. Honestly, that's the main game.

I advise getting PlatinumSpore, or some other modpack. One of the many things it gives is a reduced frequency of planetary disasters and pirate attacks.

Yes, something bad does happen if you don't help. Ecodisasters can drop a planet's T-score if you don't stop them, and pirates steal your spice.

I understand that flying in circles while shooting Proton Missiles avoids almost all damage. The problem is that there's just too many, so I can't attack the actual city or I die in a second.

I ended up with the all-Red Archetype, so I have no auto-takeover, and I'm just starting out, so no Planet Buster.

Have you gotten access to the consumable anti-ship missiles yet? They cause AoE damage and the best ones are capable of bringing down whole grox fleets in one missile (they cost accordingly, however).

Also, pulse isn't too bad against cities (especially when upgraded), but you need some patience if you are to use it while hunted by a huge enemy fleet. At least you're faster than them.

Depends on what you define as bad. When you gather enough cash you can use the fast solution tactic. You nuke them so they stop complaining.

Alternatively, make an empire of T0 colonies.

I played Spore right up until the Tribal phase. And then I just couldn't care anymore. I never really got interested in it.
You never dressed your alien race?! That's one of the best parts. That and designing your rocketship.

You can spend the last stage designing 99% of the time, it's called city designing, terraforming and ship designing. And well, carpet bombing is technically designing a wasteland.

You could probably make some really fancy hats. I'm sure some birds are big enough to just be turned into a hat, body and all.

Also, if you wanted a fancy hat, I'd probably go with either Peacock or Flamingo.

I don't think such a hat would look good anywhere except in a caravan train. It's just a bit too much.

Also, fancy isn't my thing. I generally prefer it toned down with but one strong colour. Female mallards are a good example.

Years ago, I was on the wikia for a show I liked. On the page of the character Valerie, the description was totally different from the actual character. It said she was a minor antagonist (an assassin) and how she was killed by a character named Alvin (it made it seem like Alvin was the protagonist), and how with her dying breaths she lamented not being in the arms of her ex-lover (a guy named Simon).
The article ended there, but it made whatever the other Valerie was from seem like a spy story. The article was fixed the next day. Since then, I've been trying to find out where the above characters and story were found.
I just found out where it's from: an Alvin and the Chipmunks fanfiction that I can't even find! There goes years of searching...

Not stupid at all. It'd probably feel weird though, as part of its programing is to stay solid when something is incontact with it, and the whole "a pile of sand, by physics, will just be a solid chunk of sand, not a liquid" and thus it'd prooobably hurt diving into it.
