Is it just me, or has Rich started using new fonts and styles for his sound effects lately? I started noticing this with the slightly differently styled "spplrtch!" for the Implosion (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0826.html) and after that the white (instead of the usual blue) "whooosh!". (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0837.html) Then came the green "zzzapp!" and the red "boom!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0840.html) and finally, in the latest strip, we have the "sploosh!". (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0847.html)

It seems like this is yet another art upgrade for the comic and I like those. But I'm not very fond of this particular one. It doesn't ruin anything and maybe I'm just too used to blue text, but somtimes I feel like it pops out in a distracting manner. Oh, and a "zap" effect should definitely be either blue or yellow, not green.

Thoughts?

I think he's just picking stuff that's appropriate for the effect; for example, a lot of stuff in Azure City was blue, but the white color effect is more in place with Windy Canyon's aesthetics. Similarly, the red 'BOOM' was probably from a red explosion, the lightning may well have been green, and the color of Z's 'sploosh' fits the color of the spell.

So, yeah, he could well be picking new fonts/styles, but it's mostly to fit new situations, and the rest is just an art upgrade.

Just when I thought I'd seen the most nit picking thing ever on this board, someone comes along and one ups it.

What was the previous front-runner, if I may ask?

Nope. Not really.

To be honest, I rarely ever notice the sound effects. I did notice the Implosion one, though. That one stood out a lot, so maybe that's what this is about, I don't know. They do seem to be getting more regular "comic book"-like, so that could have something to do with it.

I like the normal sound effects better. These ones don't fit the visual style of the comic.

Someone who keeps track of them would be pretty high up there.

Also I like 'em gives the noise more depth and description.
