I bet everyone finds inspiration in at least some kind of music, whether it be for a character, DMing or something else entirely. There have been plenty of threads on mood music to be played when playing, but here you should share what inspires you to play in the first place!

For medieval/high fantasy settings, I find Nightwish's older pieces to be pretty epic. Each has its own story, together with chilling awesomeness. For example:
Over The Hills And Far Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UztEfwHt14)
Elvenpath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU9dgNdzkHU)

The Portal 2, Ace Attorney and Homestuck soundtracks, on the other hand, make me want to run a really over-the-top modern action game.
Four Part Plan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IWW6iOnJ90)
Crises of Faith (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1N9aIxzgik&feature=related)
WSW-Beatdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dusgXh-taQ)

I always find the original Over The Hills and Far Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyJEytBlp1I) more D&D inspiring than the nightwish cover.

Whenever I want to get in the D&D mood, I usually listen to the lord of the rings OST or an epic music collection (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsNlhUxwGjU)

Icelandic Fjallabraedur (Fjallabræður) have awesome, unique music.

I mean, a male choir singing an apology to theirgoddess / homeland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4d2D7elf8s) in a language that's closely related to Old Norse spoken by vikings... Impressive! Unfortunately, this only works as inspirational music, since I can't imagine where this type of music would work in the background...

Blackmore's Night has some interesting, fantastical songs.

Fires at Midnight (http://youtu.be/o7n51xJAcqg)
The Circle (http://youtu.be/xeNLBPUrzGQ)
The Faerie Queen (http://youtu.be/UmflSAnq0LE)
Shadow of the Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTPVsuiNPqw)

The Clockwork Quartet does steampunk-themed music, which is rather uncommon.

The Doctor's Wife (http://youtu.be/zBFtWyvRMOk)

I've got an entire playlist on youtube of random awesome and inspirational music. I tend to pick out suitable music for both player characters and villains when one of our campaigns grows suitably epic. Given that our current one is a gestalt campaign that just hit level 17...

For example, we have a Mad Scientist in our party, some sort of horrific Bard/Artificer combination that is made of wtf and win, and he gets this music. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-Gelph6g54) He also has his own Sentai Squad of cohorts in magical power armor (I'm not kidding, there are rules for this in Pathfinder apparently) and they get this music. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8KzatSoMxU)

Or there our resident Summoner//Oracle and his (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlr405jul7M) theme, and the theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOld7f15MMo) for his Eidolon, which is basically a giant serpent that can crush enemy golems in it's coils. It is awesome.

And then there's my character, the Catfolk Soulknife(PF)//Swordsage would pretty much jumped right out of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. It's only appropriate she have some (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6XsnJHLQfA) music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hLJSnTLeS8) from it and what inspired (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca_mgn3C_Jg) it and her. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BFSHDJatdQ)

Yeah, I tend to go to Super Robots when it's time to get some epic music, as it rarely disappoints.

But for more generic epic music...there's something to be said for the Xenogears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIs8IDGmVBc) soundtrack.

I've recently been prepping to run Expedition to Castle Ravenloft.
I've been listening to the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night soundtrack as I put together my notations.

Listening to the sound track for Pirates of the Caribbean always makes me want to run a pirate game.

i second this. i use a night at the opera and nightfall on middle earth to inspire most of my campaigns.

i also used Dream Evil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVhMc-3D5Wc) to inspire the blood raven mercanaries in my current campaign, they're leader's just so happens to be four paladin's of freedom war chanters >_>

There's this old philosophical song that our DM used to play during major encounters. It ponders the age-old question of whether one should kick it in the front seat, or kick it in the back seat.

This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OjtjvfPwyg) is haunting, reminding me of large, mostly abandoned and damn creepy castles whose inhabitants are all slowly going mad.

But for more generic epic music...there's something to be said for the Xenogears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIs8IDGmVBc) soundtrack.

Gods, Grahf's theme song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN6z3jJ7ENw) FEELS like a boss' song. Hearing it alone is enough to make the player know he's in for all the pains of the world combined.
