View Full Version : [PF] Make our Pally an enemy magnet

Here's the situation. We're a 6th level party and our Paladin easily has the highest AC in the whole party- 26. Either because most of us out damage him (when he's not smiting) or the DM just hates the rest of us (jk) most enemies ignore the pally altogether.

What we need is some mechanic that turns him into an aggro magnet. We want enemies to want to gravitate to him. The best option would be an "attack the pally or pay dearly" sort of situation.

Any ideas?

This feat. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/antagonize) Just be sure you're using the post-errata version (as on the SRD) or you'll get dice thrown at you.

Sure! Play 4th ed. :smalltongue:

In all seriousness, though, here are some questions it'd be handy for us to have answered --
What's his feat layout now?
Does he have lots of Charisma?
Does the DM allow retraining?
What's the rest of the party?

His current feats are:
Shield Focus
Combat Reflexes
Scent

I have no idea why he took Scent as a feat... or why the DM gave it to him.

My obvious answer would be to ditch Combat reflexes- he's made maybe one OA, and that was triggered by an ability from our Warblade.

Party (DM allows 3.5 in this PF campaign):
Paladin
Magus
Cleric
Rogue
Monk (poor guy)
Warblade

Our DM does allow retraining as long as the rest of the party agrees.

Some of the PF Monk archetypes are actually playable (Zen Archer and Sohei).

Anyway, given it is 3.p, Martial Stance has some options.

Antagonize is your Friend.

If you are allowed 3.5 as you said the obvious thing to do is talk both him and the DM into playing a crusader instead.

The only thing other than antagonize is Broken Wing Gambit (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/broken-wing-gambit-combat-teamwork) but unless you have solo tactics or something, then it's pretty ineffective unless everyone takes it.

I second (or third) the crusader suggestion, suggest that he either retrain or at least start taking crusader levels and remember Devoted Spirit is your friend.

Note that there are several Paladin spells that scream "Hey! I'm a Tank!" - Compel Hostility (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/c/compel-hostility) and Knight's Calling (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/k/knight-s-calling) being two level-1 spells, while Fire of Entanglement (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/f/fire-of-entanglement), Paladin's Sacrifice (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/p/paladin-s-sacrifice), and Shield Other (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/shield-other) being some second level spells.

If they've already got Combat Reflexes, Bodyguard (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/bodyguard-combat) and In Harm's Way (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/in-harm-s-way-combat) help with a "tanking" feel.

Remember that one of the best ways to "tank" in Pathfinder/3.5 is with control builds. Combat Expertise->Improved Trip->Greater Trip is a nice tree, as is the Bull Rush tree for more focus on offense.

In battle, try readying an action to Bull Rush or Trip an opponent who gets close to your allies.

Antagonize! Even with the errata, your paladin (whether diplomacy or intimidate focused) will probably convince any enemy to try and take a chunk out of him. If the paladin didn't put anything into those two skills... well... why wouldn't he do it again?

See if you can fast-talk your GM into allowing a full-plate Armor of Insults (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/magic-armor/specific-magic-armor/armor-of-insults) :smallamused:
