What are some ways to make money in PF and 3.5? Please specify whether they are 3.5 or PF or both.

How much money are you looking to make and with what kind of character?

There are lots of ways to make money easily in D&D by RAW. The problem comes in when and if the DM asks why nobody else is doing X in his world/ why it hasn't already been done breaking the economy on the goods you're providing or just point out silliness in the rules.

Nobody else doing it; Candle on invocation chaining=infinite free wishes.

Economy Broken; selling Wall of Iron Iron and flesh to salt salt.

Silliness; by RAW you can buy ladders break them and sell 2 ten foot poles and a pile of fire wood for a profit.

The other problem is that the DM has to adjudicate all of these and may feel that you're violating the social contract by trying to get above wealth by level or that you're wasting game time trying to get a few measly gp.

I will say one of the better sources of decent cash is trying to sell spell casting services. Check the prices in the PHB it can be quite lucrative. Unfortunatly this requires DM adjudication as well. He can easliy say there are minimal customers at those prices and they go to a the guild which your not high enough ranking in to get cherry jobs and the guild ruthlessly cracks down on mages that undercut the PHB rates to steal they're customers.

pay some money to buy a house, rent it out, make money while off adventuring to buy more houses.

capture a magical beast or rare animal, breed it, sell it's offspring (especially easy to do if you just make your animal companion exotic)

Kidnapping

Robbery

Start a religion(or just a church) and collect donations to help the sick but keep it for yourself. when people get suspicious, fake them out with an illusion.

sell fake material components (glass "diamond dust", pidgeon guano, leather "dragon" scales

Lyre of Building, Wand of Plant Growth.

You now have 44,000,000 GP worth of plant-based craftables. It'll take you a few weeks.
(That's rounded DOWN, by the way.)

Our DM rolls all treasure randomly as we open chests and the like, so he told us that we were pretty much on our own for money.

We play a nautical campaign where the world is comprised of mostly small islands, with varying climates and whatnot. So, we took our ship and began trading. He is pretty harsh about making us keep our stuff from molding and the like, but at APL of 3, we have about 14,000 gold in the party fund, not to mention a few thousand per player. If we take that 14,000 and drop it on Saffron (our big money maker), which we pick up for about 31 gold and sell it for about 150.

Yeah, just convince your DM to do that.

Well... there is the famous "fake mount".
This is both 3.5 and PF.

A Wizard level 1 can pull it off.
You only need one spell : Mount.

Cast when out of town.
Enter town at full speed, go to the stables.
Say you are on an urgent mission and need a fresh mount to keep going.
Big stuff, for the local noble or even for the King.

The local stabbleboy will likely object.
Act embarassed, frustrated and even angry.
Offer your tired mount and "all the gold I have on me", that's it, 20 gp in exchange for a fresh one.
And that's it !!

Sure, you PAID for the mount.
But you paid less than its real value.
Now ride into next town and try to sell the horse for half the price.
Easier 55 gp ever.

Mind you, if the rogue or bard is in it, with his bluff, it might be easier.

At higher level, you got Iron Wall.
A Wizard level 12 can generate a 300 square feet wall, 3 inch thick, of pure iron.

450 pounds per cubic foot
12 inches in 1 foot
Hence 37,5 pounds for a 1 square foot, 1 inch thick, wall of iron.
33.750 pounds for a 300 square feet wall, 3 inch thick, of pure iron.
The value is 3.375 gp.
The cost is 50 gp.
Net profit : 3.325 gp.
Let's say you sell it even at half the price, you are still a winner.
