Hello everybody was just wondering if you playground type people would like to help me out with something.

I'm a DM working on the next little-epic-suicidal adventure and wanted to throw in a few D&D related riddles (as my players seem to like them if used in moderation) Don't want to use riddles from any D&D book as there is a good chance the players have read them at some point.

So, my question to you lot is... "List your favourite D&D related riddle with the answer spoiler'ed (as some of us like to guess)"

How many Monks does it take to change a lightbulb?

This is a trick question. Your players will likely start throwing out various numbers, and the reasoning why that number is correct.

But in fact, the correct answer their characters should give is What is a lightbulb? (http://xkcd.com/890/)

Obviously, this doesn't work if your campaign setting actually has lightbulbs. You can also replace "Monk" in the above with any other class/race/monster of your choice.

Did you want riddles about D&D, or fantasy themed riddles?

Sorry, should have been more clear, Riddles that I could USE in a D&D setting. So something a an evil riddle door might ask to let you go by or a riddle a dragon asks in exchange for help.

"What is your name?"
"What is your quest?"
"What is the flight speed of an unladen air elemental?"

And since the door is evil, the door doesn't open even if they answer them all right...because...

The door is unlocked, however it is also trapped. Many parties assume "riddle door" means the door isn't trapped. Imagine the humor when they try the door and forget to search it. So EVIL!

I once used this one, it worked because of the obvious allusion and it not being too hard. (Actually the first answer I got was Morresey, :smallsigh:, but nevermind)

Ancient Dwarven door:
"Speak the name of the smith and enter"

Yep this kind of thing makes for good rollplaying if your players like to find out backstory / gather info.

Reminded me that I once wanted to have an NPC Bard that was cursed to speak only in Song Lyrics, didn't end up using him as it would have gotten to be too much of a pain.

Be a jerk. Make it a really easy answer, but phase in the form of a question. Like Jeopardy.

Er, well the answer is Moradin, the soul forger. Which is almost general knowledge. I prefer to have the players guess these rather than roll skill checks, it gives them a chance for a eureka moment.

Three riddles I used in a recent game:

A man who is driven, driven to drink.
Sunburned, cold, pale not pink.
Sleeping in a dirty box.
Through the darkened streets he walks.
Though rarely found in a holy place,
He's born again, but not in grace.
Answer: a vampire. Took my players a long time to get this one.

Hands I do not have, yet I grasp so tight.
I love darkness, my enemy is light.
Both the mighty and low know me well,
For in the hearts of men do I dwell!
Answer: Fear. Note that my players guessed this almost right away.

A seer sole in a damp cave
Lapping at the brine within
Has visions of the here and now
And shares them with his twin.
No grave omens will he speak
No lies will this seer tell.
Under blanket of the night
Resting in his lidded cell.
Answer: an eye

Check out the riddles used in Baldur's Gate series and NWN series, I believe you could look them up online (I did once before). Also old norse/old english riddles might work but some of them are pretty difficult.

If you eat it, you will die.

What do you have but other people use?

What do men do standing up, women sitting down, and dogs with one leg raised?

Here's my favorite Chuckle Patch riddle ever!

What looks like a bell, rings like a bell, and sounds like a bell?
a bell

What does a pool table have that's in a man's pants?
pockets

I have more eyes then many eyes,
yet I do not see,
the lady and the cheat govern me,
though you won't see them,
A sign of the bored and desperate, who am I?

the answer obviously is the die

I will show you my value,
or be two faced,
beware of the speaker of truths
to amuse or compell
you might know me well

This is the mighty playing card

with me you can go a long way
call me out and you will have lost me
prayers to me you say
forsaken you will be
lady Luck

the fool has it,
the wise man never
find me bit by bit
you may feel clever
knowledge

when 2 opposites meet,
goodbye you will greet.
while the time is low
a bow light will show
dusk

What is sown I will reap
what has gone I will keep
I am what but few seek
I am slender and sleek
Death

I am what I am
I will forever be that
Man never loses
Hope (yes its a haiku :smallcool: )

Another classic:

The man who built it doesn't want it.
The man who bought it doesn't need it.
The man who needs it doesn't know it.

coffin

You can add this: But beware the one who did make it, needs it, and knows it.

to warn of a vampire

I am important
I am Sacrificial
I am on a journey
If I reach the end I become strong
I move only North, Northwest and Northeast
It all comes down to me in the end
What am I?
