One of the players in our group is playing a tweaked/homebrewed Half-dragon (we all helped make to try to make it worth the +3 la but thats a story for another thread) but he wanted to know what all "Immunity to Sleep and Paralysis effects" covered, and instead of trying to show him everything I thought I'd make a thread knowing the community can cover it more thoroughly then I could. So I ask of you great sages of the playground what say you on this subject?

P.S. I know the communities feelings toward half-dragons and what not but he stands firm on being a half-dragon so please no alternatives and what not he just wants to know what the above immunites cover. Thank you in advanced :smallwink:

The short version is that any effect that uses any form of the words "sleep" or "paralyze" fails on him. It's really that simple. Incidentally, paralyzed (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/conditionSummary.htm#paralyzed) has a formal D&D rules definition.

The somewhat lengthier version goes into examples:
Sleep (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/sleep.htm)
Deep Slumber (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/deepSlumber.htm)
Hold Person (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/holdPerson.htm), and its Mass and/or Monster variations
Holy Word (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/holyWord.htm), Blasphemy (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/blasphemy.htm), or Dictum (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/dictum.htm), when cast by a sufficiently high level caster
It is unclear whether the indirect paralysis caused by having 0 dexterity would be affected.

That's all that comes to mind immediately, but I'm sure there are more. Note for things like Holy Word with more than one effect, this immunity only prevents the paralysis - Holy Word could still blind and deafen him if he's evil, and a sufficiently high caster level would still result in the spell killing him.

How about Power Word Stun?

So its one of those "RAW and RAI are almost the same thing in this case" situations then?

I've been under the impression that immobility form a 0 Dex score is an exception to "Immunity to Paralysis", being that it's an indirect effect of having a zero score in Dexterity.

How about Power Word Stun?

Power Word Stun (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/powerWordStun.htm) does exactly what it says it does: Stuns. Stun and Paralyze are different conditions, so immunity to paralysis will not help you against stunning.

So its one of those "RAW and RAI are almost the same thing in this case" situations then?

I'd really say that they are the same thing in this case. Paralyze, at least, is a specific and defined condition, so anything that would inflict that condition, the half dragon will definitely be immune to (possibly excluding, as Douglas said, having Dex drained to 0, which is a weird case).

K, as far as the 0 dex I look at it like this, They're immune to anything outside force causing paralysis but 0 dex to me means your body just isnt responding so no you cant be immuned to your own body lol
