So, I've come round to the idea of running a PBP game based on the Metro 2033 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_2033)book/game, but my knowledge of RPGs outside of D&D and Dark Heresy is pretty poor.

The game'd be a series of fairly linear dungeon-style crawls, with emphasis on firearm combat and diplomacy. Can anyone recommend me a good system to represent this? Ideally as inexpensive as possible?

There are all the free systems out there, although I think Risus or GURPS Lite would work best for you.

3:16 - Carnage Amongst the Stars is a light, fun, system for splattery games with weird monsters and lots of monster-smashing. Some of the serial numbers would have to be filed off (it's written for Space Marines), but its narrative dynamics are fitting for video game fiction, its killcounts are in FPS-levels and its flashback mechanic would work nicely with Metro's backstory.

For a longer-running games, I'd go with something Unisystem. It does a really good job at action horror. All Flesh Must Be Eaten or Evil Dead would work (but again, would need slight reskinning to match the fiction). AFMBE is a bit heavier (still much lighter than d20) and grittier; Evil Dead makes the players into bigger monster-splatteringer heroes (very bad for the fiction, but a bit more fitting for the FPS experience).

The base system of d20 Modern, while being a bit of the unwanted child for Wizards, works much like D&D so there's little to learn, has emphasis on guns, and works with dungeon crawls. d20 Apocalypse has alternative economics (trade units) and some expanded radiation and disease rules. Weapons Locker has gotten showered with praise from my gun-obsessed friend, too, so that could work too if your group is really big on guns and their minutia.

It's available as an SRD (http://d20resources.com/), too, so if you have working knowledge of D&D you wouldn't need to buy anything, really. (Apocalypse and Weapons Locker are not OGL, though).

For PbP, I've noticed that AFMBE seems to get more response than 3:16 or d20 Modern, though. At least on these boards, so that might figure into it.
