Okay, so I'm writing up a campaign where the players have to escort magical supplies and goods along their way to a magic Expo, and so they don't have to carry all that weighty stuff by buying their own mounts (and so they don't steal it,), I decided to give them one loaned form their employer. Seeing as he is a slightly-mad alchemist, I decided he would have experimented on it with extended potions...

So, I ended up with a huge rhinoceros a strength of 34 (bull's strength, Animial Growth, 22 base) and Ant haul, allowing it to tote about 8.4 tonnes as a medium load and 24 tonnes at maxiuimim capactivity.

To stop them from just launching their rhino at foes and just breezing their way though all ground-based encounters up to lv 8, I gave it a special rule that means it’s too stoned to fight, but still, that not what I’m asking. What I am asking is simple:

TL:DR, What can you do with 24 tonnes of carrying capticity?

Well, can it exert that much force, or can it just carry it? If they tied it to something (with a suitably strong tether), could it pull worth that much, or do they have to package the weight and set it on its back first? Because if it's the former, that thing could cause some serious property damage.

Carry 24 tonnes.

For some reason, these two phrases go together in my mind... 24 tonnes would be a heckuva lot of "dreamweed". Or "magic mushrooms". Or "extract of the poppyseed".

Acutally, from what I can tell, carrying capticity is also what is applied for pulling or towing objects, so yes, ant haul should still work, giving it FIVE TIMES it's full power. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/alignment-description/carrying-capacity)Eh, I'm happy to give them a living siege-weapon. (I was kinda hoping they would attach a cannon and apagoda to it anyhow. it's what I would do.) just so long as they don't push their way through normal encounters.

Also should note that the creature (dubbed R.H.N.O.C.E.R.O.U.S) does not need to breathe, eat or drink, so they might have a submercible on their hands.

Make sure you aren't confusing tons and tonnes...

Proably am. What's the real difference?

Should note that these are US tons/tonnes/whatever, seeing as that's where D&D origniated.

Should be using the bloody metric system but NOOO, it's only good enoguth for 75% of the world...

A US ton is 2,000 pounds. Elsewhere it's usually 2,240 pounds. A tonne (metric ton) is 1,000 kg, or about 2,204 pounds.

I must admit, when I read the thread title, I immediately imagined a Rhinoceros equipped with a "strategically-placed" bag of holding... eeeeewwwww...

Anyway, on to some math.

For a Huge Quadruped with a str of 34, Light load is 5592 lbs, Medium is 11184, and Heavy is 16800. Adding Ant Haul boosts these numbers to 27960/55920/84000 lbs. Drag load is another 5x over heavy, so your 'Roidrhino can drag up to 420000 lbs along the ground. To provide some examples, that's equivalent to 50000 gallons of water, 2500 cubic feet of granite rock, or about 750 cubic feet of solid steel.

Short answer is: If it's smaller than a building and not nailed down, you can probably drag it around with you.

Edit: More Math! (I'm bored)

I missed the quadruped modifier, so it should actually be 420000 lbs that can be dragged.

Base speed of a Rhinoceros is 40', modified to 30' for a heavy load. In other words, a Rhino can move 30 feet in six seconds from a standing start while pulling a full load. This translates to an acceleration of 1.524 meters/second^2. Applying that acceleration to a weight of 420000 lbs gives a force of 290336 newtons. I'm not an engineer, so the rest of the proof is beyond my abilities, but I'd imagine that should be enough force to tear down a portion of a castle wall!

Edit again: updated original post with new numbers.
Edit again again: Of course, all my drag math up there ignores things like friction with the ground and such, so the actual force is probably a helluva lot higher.

Make it undead, hollow it out, then do the undead-beetle-mobile-fort-thingy from Dark Sun.
Give your players a rare chance of actually using that Knowledge: Engineering.
It could double as a storefront for the magical goods. What better place to show off your magical merchandise than partly inside an undead rhinoceros*?

*BTW, it's spelled that way, without the u. I don't like to correct other people's spelling, my own is too atrocious for that privileged, but you had an abbreviation 'n all, so I guessed you'd actually want to know.

The Submersible form should be the Hippo.

Reminds me of this (http://www.enworld.org/forum/2539869-post44.html) old story (probably NSFW). In fact, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title, that and Ace Ventura.

Oh god, that story is FANTASTIC!

I will admit that the name is unfortunate in hindsight, but I couldn't think of any better terms.

Silly things that sprang to mind:

Use old Bessy to brake down a castle wall / any other bull doser type job.

Use old Bessy to Block a river and form a Dam, then move and flood everyone.

Build a platform on Bessy's back and shoot down at your foes

Cast FLY on Bessy... lead her over your Foes.... dispell fly.... (though this is rather evil):smallcool:

Have it drag ~100 tons of iron, then dimension-door it above enemies for ridiculous fall damage.
