Does the spell level adjustment of a metamagic feat impact whether or not a spell can be affected by a metamagic rod? For example, if you empower a second level spell, would you need a lesser or regular metamagic rod to affect it?

Only the metamagic feat "Heighten Spell" increases the spells level, all other just force a spell to be cast from a higher spellslot. Use the lesser metamagic rod.
