View Full Version : What would a generic 9th lvl character wear?

Need a good idea of what each core class (minus bard and sorcerer) would possess at lvl 9 with wealth by level using the PHB and DMG only.

Basically need to throw together some 9th lvl pregens but i've never played that high and its kind of odd skipping all those levels. How many magic items should they have? What should the wizard be wearing? etc. etc.

Kind of vague I know, but you guys are quick with this stuff :)

The information you requested may be found starting on page 112 of the 3.5 DMG.

The DMG should have a tenth level stat block for each of the PHB classes, but they are pretty sub-par (toughness, spell focus abjuration, that sort of thing), so you can just use them as slightly more durable level 9 NPCs

Double-swordsaged. I came to give the DMG pages too. They're not optimal, but they're a fair starting point.

I don't have the WBl on hand, but I'd start with

+2 (or +4 if it can be afforded) stat booster, possibly a second +2 to a secondary stat.
Handy Haversack+Efficient quiver
Wand of Cure Light Wounds for divine casters
Mithiril Buckler (and +1 fortification if it can be afforded)
Cloak of resistance

Whoa. All the years I've owned this thing and never thought about those pages. Thank you :)

Pants.

Unless they're a Sorcerer of course. Then they would just wear belts.

I wanted to say pants :(

But an advice - don't overelaborate on NPCs you plan on killing ;)

Everything +2 (Weapon, Rescloak, Armor) maybe some teleporting boots and off you go.

Level 9 wealth is 36,000. For a 'generic' allotment, something like this:

+2 Weapon (8,000)
+2 Armor and Shield (if not using a shield, +3 Armor) (8 or 9,000)
+2 booster for primary stat (4,000)
+2 booster for Con (4,000)
+2 Resistance to saves (4,000)
+1 Ring of Deflection (2,000)
+1 Natural Armor (2,000)

Leaving 4,000 for incidentals, like actually paying for the base items of your weapon/shield or picking up some cheaper utility items like a Handy Haversack, a Hat of Disguise, or a pile of Feather Tokens and other consumables.

Here's a good starting point for the fighter, barbarian, paladin, ranger and maybe rogue:

Should only take minor adjustments depending on character specifics. Like ranged guys might want dex and less AC/con in exchange for more offense. Maybe lesser bracers of archery or a beefy bow or arrows. Note that NPCs get less money than PCs and so would use the gear of a lower level PC.

The characters in the DMG are using NPC wealth by level a lower value chart than the PC wealth by level chart. It's kind of a compromise between having absolute ****e gear by just having an appropriate amount or treasure for their CR and having full PC WBL potentially doubling the PC's wealth in a single challenging encounter worth enough XP for between a quarter and a third of a level.

They are a decent starting point though with stat boosters for key stats, and cheap AC boosters of several flavors.

Increase the priority of stat boosters.

Give melee cheap mobility items.

Deprioritize weapons for non casters. We're not quite at the point of it being reasonable to expect Greater Magic Weapon and Magic Vestment from casters so they're still a priority for melee.

The items that grant low level ToB maneuvers can be very good for filling in gaps.

Check bunko's if you want to give a character an unexpected trick or two. It's basically a compilation of underpriced items.

I believe the "big six" were:

Amulet of Natural Armor
Ring of Protection
Cloak of Resistance
Weapon(s)
Amour/Shield
Stat boosters

Then you should have looked at Google's Number 2 image then.

+1 to "pants".

In fact, depending on the campaign, you might also want to put Death Ward on those pants.
