Help on keeping track of time in my setting

Ok so I'm getting pretty far along in creating my campaign setting and I realized that time is going to be a key factor in a lot of the story lines and I have no clue how I'm going to keep track of it. So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or a system they use for keeping track of time in long term story lines that stretch on through many sessions.

Any suggestions?

I like to make a little timeline sheet. You keep one big one for things that take great wide spans and for little missions that need time you make a small one. Put little links off it to show what events should happen when and what time such as "hostage 1 and 2 dies nao" and scribble out the timeline based on times passage as things go on. I usually guesstimate times passing for certain events.
