One of my DMs likes to go by the rules but occasionally gives TONS of free reign over what's allowed as a PC. Heck, recently we had a game where someone was a giant crab who had a butler that interpreted everything. For this campaign, he's pulling all the stoppers and allowing a plethora of weird characters - within reason, of course.

So I wanted to play as a pony. The key idea is novelty; if it's an interesting idea it's more likely to be approved. So mainly the question is: how can someone make playing as a pony interesting?

Possible race ideas include the homebrew pony races from this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182994) and so forth.

You could steal one of my ideas-- Put a spin on playing the "awakened wizard's familiar" concept with the background that you are the wizard in pony form. Perhaps you tried to bond a unicorn to yourself and being too low a level to do such the spell backfired and switched your minds.
Now you're stuck as the unicorn and out there your body is being inhabited by a very confused unicorn.

Be a Paladin. Summon Mount now nets you a summonable date.
